Preferred Solution: Thin vertical line on my newly bought laptop

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Thin vertical line on my newly bought laptop

It could possibly be due to a faulty data cable and at worst the screen itself. Only solution would be to have it serviced by a Lenovo technician as it is most likely hardware related.

I bought my XPS 13 9360 during black friday and just opened it up for Christmas. Immediately during the first start up I noticed a persistent thin green vertical line in the middle of the display.
I hooked up an external monitor and i've confirmed that it is only on the laptop screen. Is this a common problem and is this something that Dell can resolve immediately with  replacement or is this something that will have to be sent in for repairs?

Thanks

On my 3 year old laptop (HP dvEnvy7), a very thin line of black pixels has showed up. The first time it showed up was on the red background login screen, and I think tapping the monitor made it go away, but that might've been coincidence. I just noticed it again in the same place where the color of the screen is green. I was running an MBAM scan while that showed up and the line went away, again I don't know whether that was coincidence. I've read that this problem could be caused "by the traces going bad in the video cable going from the LCD the the main board" due to the laptop lid opening and closing. The lid is getting a bit loose. Is this the answer or could there be something more malicious, as my paranoia comes back to haunt me?

A:Thin black/dead vertical pixel line

If it's a single pixel width from edge to edge, it will almost certainly be a fault inside the LCD panel itself. Individual pixel drive signals are not carried on the LVDS cable connecting the panel to the mainboard, as that would require thousands of individual conductors. So a "hard fault" such as a complete black column or line is usually due to a bad connection in a heat bonded loom inside the panel, or an intermittent line or column driver IC which are also integrated into the bonded loom matrix inside the panel. Pressing or tapping the screen/frame can commonly make the symptom come and go in its early phases.

With that said, odd line-like faults can be a result of poor contact on the LVDS cable connector(s), and dismantling enough to gain access to this and cleaning the contacts with alcohol can solve it.

Hello Guys,

I'm new here so pleae go east on me. Its my first post. I noticed yesterday that there is a very fine thin line on the left side of my desktop. In the screen shot you can barely make it out, but you will be able to once you see ot from the left corner of task bar. it does not appear when i open a browser or a folder or even start menu. It only shows on the desktop screen and is really annoying. I tried disabling some odd services and restarted the computer as well, but still no luck. A little help will be appreciated.

P.S: Screen shot is below.

Hi there
If you are using an external TV type of monitor go into the menu of the Monitor -- usually via a remote controller etc. Somewhere in the Video / picture setups you should see an option like auto adjust picture / size or something like that -- then the image should fit the screen perfectly.

(Assuming of course that you have set the resolution (in the PC settings) of the monitor to one it can handle).

Cheers

Hi,

Had IBM Thinkpad 600E fixed under warranty for faulty screen (which had ceased to work) - problem turned out to be faulty motherboard, and motherboard was replaced.
Since getting the laptop back, there is a thin (about 4mm) vertical grey band down the entire screen which obliterates whatever is behind it. This line is about a cm in from the left hand side.
the band comes on from start up...ie through the black POST screen, and if operating in DOS - the same. The correct drivers and refresh rates, etc were already loaded. OS is Win98SE.
Wondering if it could be caused by something simple like a loose cable?
The reason I'm asking is that I'm in Sydney & have to send the laptop back to Melbourne to be fixed....if it is something that has happened in transit, there's no point sending it back to have the same thing happen again. Any ideas much appreciated.
Thanks

A:Thin grey vertical band on laptop screen

That could be a physical flaw in the screen, but hopefully it's just a loosened connection in the wiring involved.

It probably did happen in transit, since the repair techs would have noticed and called you if they saw it.

You could have a local tech try to check the wiring first, but you'll probably have to send it to Melbourne again. If so, use a bigger box and ship it wrapped in something big and soft like a down-filled winter coat or quilt. You might also want to insure the parcel for the round trip if your postal system or courier company offers the option.

This problem has just occurred for me. I am only on a single screen 27" Mac, running Windows 10 on Bootcamp. I have had this computer form about 3 years. The problem does not exist on the Mac side of my computer - as always everything on the Mac side
runs spot on, its only over here on the Microsoft Windows side that I end up with issues. The only reason I use Microsoft Windows is to run Autodesk Inventor Professional for design and drawing. Inventor hasn't been written in Apple language as yet but I'd
wish they'd get their finger out and get it done. I dislike having to partition my drive and lose space because of a business biase. I also use the browser Edge to run tutorials on drawings. The cursor change only seems to occur after a period of non use -
initially I though it was after a timeout but I notice that the screen doesn't have to go to screen saver or blank-out for the change to occur, only a certain period of non-use maybe 5-10 minutes. It would be nice to see so attention paid to this issue after
sooo mannnnny years of existence. I see this forum issue goes back to 2009. I have contacted Microsoft recently once so far without charge and was told to delete the mouse driver and allow the automatic reinstall to occur. This still hasn't resolved the problem.
I see your above work around of enabling a mouse trail as one of my alternatives otherwise it's a restart to rectify. I will log another call to Microsoft help in an endeavour to apply more weight t... Read more

Hi! Let me explain this frustrating and silly problem...

I bought an Acer laptop running windows 8 maybe few months ago. Everything were fine. Absolutely no problem at all. but then...

I left my laptop running for the night. (forgot to close it) but when i woke up, he show me a ''no boot device detected, please insert a boot device and restart'' screen. My first question was why? You were working fine! So i try to look up for the problem but i did not find any answer... or even someone else who experienced the same problem. I try using the recovery back i've made, went into the screen where you can load the driver, add partition, format partition, etc. But the hard disk is not showing. Like if the laptop never had a hard drive. I did not make any internal or external change at all since i have it. Its like if the hard disk can randomly kill himself without any reason. I have some experience in computer but i'm not a mastermind. So i need help please. If you need any extra information i'll add them. As i said, according to my search, it seems i'm the first one experiencing this so i don't know exactly which information need to be known.

A:No boot device on newly bought Windows 8 laptop

I have a little update on my situation.

After messing around on internet and the internal command prompt, i found something... odd.
The main hard drive where the windows were initially installed (C doesn't exist anymore... I generated a list of list of basic and dynamics volumes which are installed using command prompt but nothing... The only one appeared was my USB key, which contained the backup installation i'm running on. And that same USB key took the letter C:
So, to make it short: Hard drive randomly died and he erased every bit of existence in my computer.

Its getting worse... :S

Hi Kerberg, Can you try the following troubleshooting steps to see if it's hardware/software issue: - Connect the notebook to an external monitor to see if the line appears on the external monitor. - Go into BIOS by tapping "F10" key during boot up and see if the line appears on your main display. If it doesn't occur in BIOS, the hardware is good. We will have to focus on video drivers- onboard and discrete card. If the line appears on the screen, please call 800-334-5144, say notebook and then zbook through the promot. Thank you, -Tenzin

I have an HP Pavilion N5425 laptop, 14.1" LCD TFT (Toshiba) that works fine but 1 complaint:

About 1/4 way across the screen (from left to right) there is a thin blue line running from top to bottom.

It started very faintly but grew continually worse and is now a "permanent" feature.

The screen and laptop are fine otherwise, and I've been able to check all internal connections and and component seating. But the this hasn't corrected the problem.

I can replace any peice, but what part is it? Screen? Cable? Video Card?

When I change resolutions, the line stays in the exact same place on the screen.

When I unplug the cable from back of the screen (leaving the invertor connected) the screen remains on and show a plain white field with no blue line.

Using the video-out from the laptop, the line does not appear when hooked to a TVs video-in. (I do not have a proper monitor to try this with.)

Gently moving the cable seems to have no effect. But there is a good length of it held still under the power-button pcb when the laptop is re-assembled enough to turn it on.

Anyone have any experience like this and have an idea as to which part to replace? Any more suggestions to try?

Thanks!

SOM29 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about a vertical blue line on your display and wanted to help. It's highly unlikely that this is a driver issue, and much more likely that this is either a failing display, or a failing video chipset, or both -- and both of these last two are very expensive to fix, likely more than simply replacing the laptop. A way to see if it IS the video driver is to boot into safe mode -- in which case, the special video drivers would then NOT be working:  http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/69585-safe-mode.htmlGood Luck========================================================================I am a volunteer and I do not work for, nor do I represent, HP.---------------------------------------------------------------If my posts helped you, please click the Thumbs-Up symbol on my post to say thanks. If my posts solved your problem please click "Accept As Solution".========================================================================

Hello HP Support,  I need your help! I have an HP Pavilion 15 Notebook - n068el (energy star), Product number: F6R97EA#ABZ, running on Windows 8.1 64-bit.System: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4200U CPU @ 1.60 GHz 2.30 GHz, RAM: 4 GB.Processor Graphics in use: Intel(R) HD Graphics 4400, GOP version: 5.0.1035. Since yesterday, after some updates probably, but I don't know which ones, a white vertical line has appeared on the right-hand side of the screen, and it doesn't go away.  I cannot watch films or videos, do any work without this line disturbing the screen, it is really annoying and unpleasant.  Everything else is normal and running properly I think.  I have tried to solve it by downloading updated versions of the graphics processor, but when I go to your website, for my laptop there are three downloads recommended for the graphics processor: Driver per scheda grafica Intel ad alta definizione (HD) 2013-11-25 , Versione10.18.10.3325, 158.03M orDriver scheda grafica NVIDIA 2013-11-25 , Versione1.10, 340.7M orDriver per scheda grafica AMD ad alta definizione (HD)2013-11-15 , Versione13.151.0.0, 277.22M I don't know which one I have to download, so I have not downloaded any, and in any case I don't know whether that would solve my problem. Can you please help me?   Many Thanks in advance.Patrizia

A:Vertical white line on the laptop screen

Hey Patrizia,Welcome to the HP Forums! The first steps that you should attempt is to make sure that the vertical white lines do not appear in the BIOS. To do this I have included the steps below.1. Turn off your computer2. Make sure you have connected the power cable3. Turn on your notebook, as it is starting press the  F10 button repeatedlyOnce you are in the BIOS, if the lines are still present, it is likely a hardware failure. The next two steps may resolve the issue. The first one is to do a hard reset. I have included the document 'Performing a Hard Reset or Forced Reset'. The next and final step is to perform a BIOS update. I have included the information here for you 'Updating the BIOS'.Let me know if the issue does not appear in the BIOS.Hope this helps!

I had an old laptop in '12 that I used for mainly internet browsing, but it ended up having a glitch I coulf never fix, and I have fished out that laptop today.

Whenever the computer starts up, it will work for a few brief seconds before the computer seems to pick up each individual color on the screen and make them into vertical lines. And, more recently, the computer will shut down automatically once they have been displayed for a few moments. My knowledge of how to fix this is limited to taking out the battery repeatedly.

I would add more to System Specs but I'm genuinely clueless, thanks in advance!

Hey all. I have a 5 yr. old HP Pavilion dv6t 3200 CTO Laptop. I have had a 1/4 " white vertical line on the right side on my display for awhile now. It is there all the time, even in safe mode, even when I run computer error scan.( Black Screen with white line still) The pointer will disappear under the white line when trying to scroll making this difficult. I have used HDMI cable to my TV and the display on it shows no white line. I then assume that it is either the screen or the display cable. I would have to open it up either way, but was wondering if there is a way to figure out which is the culprit ? Or just go for a new screen, just do not want to open it and replace screen to find out cable is bad. Any ideas ? Thanks

A:Vertical white line right side of Hp dv6t 3200 laptop display

I believe the HP Pavilion dv6t 3200 has integrated graphics, meaning the graphics are soldered to the motherboard.
It is possible that it is the screen, but personally i think it could be the graphics chip. You mentioned that when you connect to an external display the "white line" is no longer visible.

You refer to the cable possibly being the problem are you referring to the HDMI cable or the cable that connects the screen to the motherboard?

If you are talking about the cable that connects the screen to the motherboard, the cable is soldered to the screen therefore if it is the cable a new screen will be needed. Can you take a picture of the line you are seeing please as this will help me diagnose the problem.

Hello all,

I have recently upgraded from 7 to 8. Have only one complaint - in 7 I used to be able to make my taskbar thin while in the vertical (LHS) of the screen, it was a bit hacky, you had to:

Set the taskbar to autohide
Stop the "desktop window manager session manager" service
Restart the service
Turn autohide off

I had written a batch file and just set it to run at start and it worked fine.

However it doesn't work in 8 and examining the list of services, it seems that desktop window manager session manager has disappeared. A quick look at the wiki page says that it now cannot be disabled and is running all the time.

Is there any way to do this in Win 8?

To clarify, I'm trying to get this:

Any options considered!

Taskbar will change to that position. Hope this is what you want. If you use small icons, it will be thin, I believe.

Well I get home to find out that there is no room to put this new HDD. Now when I say no room I don't mean there isn't a slot in my computer for it (because there is) but there isn't a place to plug it in with the ATA cable.

I really want this HDD installed for extra space (Anime, movies, games, etc.) but I don't know a way to do so without taking out the other HDD. I'm also not too literate on this side of computers so any help is appreciated. If I'm not making any sense please tell me.

Two hard drives can be fitted to each mobo ata connector, you probably just need to buy a new data cable that has two hard drive plugs on it instead of one!!!!!

Hi, Here are a couple of things to check. 1.  Right click the battery icon in the Taskbar and select Power Options.  Click on Change plan settings next to your selected power plan and in the following window, click on Change advanced power settings.  In the Advanced settings window, expand Display and then expand Enable adaptive brightness - make sure this is set to Off for both On Battery and Plugged in.  Click Apply and Ok to save any setting changes. 2.  Open windows Control Panel and in the top right, next to View by: select 'Large Icons'.  From the new layout, select the Intel HD Graphics option.  Click on the Power icon and in the following screen, select On Battery in the left hand pane - under the option Display Power Saving Technology, set this to Disable.  Click Apply and then Ok to save any setting change. Regards, DP-K

Hi, It sounds like you have the wrong keyboard layout set. If you have more than one keyboard layout set in Windows 10, you can toggle between them by holding down the Ctrl Key and pressing the Shift key Alternatively, you can change the layout for your keyboard as described on the link below. Change Keyboard Layout - Windows 8 & 10 Regards, DP-K

Hi All,

I bought a new Acer laptop (Aspire E5 - 573) just 20 days ago and it takes much time to get started (almost 8 to 10 minutes) although it works fine once it is started.

Can anyone please help me in understanding that is there any problem with my laptop or it is just like it functions.

I am not a very techy kind of guy and using laptop (personal) first time.

Please help

Warm Regards
Ashish

I just bought a desktop and the first time I pluget it in and try and turn it on the hp symbol briefly shows on the screen then disappears then the screen stays blank with the mouse on screen. Nothing else will load up I've gone into the diagnostics through f2 and ran the system tests but they all passed. I would like to know if there is a way I can fix this or if I should just return this product and get another one.

Pryan316 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! If you can replace this, then do so -- there is no point in struggling to repair a brand new PC if you can replace it.Good Luck
