Most significant field in HDD Benchmarks

Q: Most significant field in HDD Benchmarks

I am hesitant between two choices, my decision will be based on the overall performance of the HDD
The two options are:

Read - Write
Seq. 100 - 99
Rand 43 - 58
Rand 0.6 - 1.5
Rand 0.7 - 1.4

Read - Wire
Seq. 35 - 30
Rand 34 - 31
Rand 6 -8
Rand 6.5 - 8

Which one should I expect better performance of?
The use of the PC will be based on normal operational, rare huge files transfers.. but general office apps and some other apps and internet browsing, music, videos... etc

the Rands are respectively;
4K QD32

Preferred Solution: Most significant field in HDD Benchmarks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Most significant field in HDD Benchmarks

What's Rand?

What's "Read - Wire"?

What's QD32?

What benchmarking application are you using to get those figures?

What's the brand, model, and size of the 2 hard drives in question?

I use due dates on my Outlook tasks. When I customize my Tasks list (in the Calendar view) to group by due date, I just get too many groupings (one for each due date!). I would like to know if I can create a custom field called 'Due Month' and/or 'Due Week', extracted from the 'Due Date', so I can view my tasks by what is due during a given week or month. If the answer is yes, any suggestions on the technique I would use would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

I have a table titled time_slips used to track the amount of time an attorney spends with a member. In the time_slips table there is a field titled reference_id which is a combo box pulling it's displayed information from another table titled references. Also in the time_slips table is a field named details which is native to this table.

My question is, can I have the details field auto-populate "no charge" when a certain reference id is selected (i.e. 300)?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I attached my database what i would like to do is create a form when an end user will enter a corresponding user ID from that I wish to populate textbox fields with Agent Name, Supervisor, Location, Dept *all seperate text boxes of course* I have attached the database if someone could help me do this it would be great. Let me know if you need any further details to help get me through this.

A:update field A in form based on entry in field b

Welcome to the forum, before answering you question can I suggest some improvements to your database.
Currently you do not have any "Key", "Indexed" fields in your tables and there are no relationships set up between the tables.
Also do you really need the Archive Table?
The data looks like it has been exported in from a spreadsheet, relational databases work quite differently to spreadsheets, so to make the most of their advantages you need to correctly relate your Tables.
Your UserID Roster also has some disconnect between the Field Names and the actual data in them, particularly the Name and Type feilds.
In the Supervisor Table the Birthdate does not seem to have Translated correctly.

I support a software program that has a proprietary menu item when you right-click a calculated field. It has been this way for 10-15years and has worked in WinXP through Win10 with never an issue. This past week I had 3 different customers tell me that when they right-click one of these fields to access what is normally the Cut/Copy/Paste/ menu that also includes our menu item, they are now getting the Windows default cut/copy/paste/Right to Left Reading order/Show Unicode control characters/ etc menu. The only thing I can think of that they all have in common besides these are all Window 10 64bit pc's, is that they all have one update to Adobe Acrobat (17.012.20098).
I was able to resolve for a moment on two of these workstations by having the user go into Language/Advanced settings and actually selected "English (Unites States) from the "Override for Windows display language" even though that settings is implied by the "recommended". But after the pc was turned off over night and back to it the next day, the problem is back and that setting is still selected. All language and regional settings on all the pc's are defaulted to English/Unites States. I do not know what other avenue to go in. Could something hae been switched on or off in Windows (by this Adobe update perhaps?) that would make the context text menu switch to Windows text default right-click menu?

Any help is appreciated!

Is there anyway to set up the machine so that I can do this without someone being in the field at the machine?

I am working on a database that stores genus, species, and variety I want to sort the data with genus, then species, then variety.

Now the tricky part. Sometimes there is no species. When this is the case, I want the database to sort that record off of variety.

I have though of a way to do this, but need help with the code.

If I make a species2 field, I could create an expression that would look at the species field. If the species field is empty, it could copy the data from variety. If it is not empty, then copy the data in the species field.

Once the species2 field has the updated data, I could then do a sort

genus, species2, variety

The report would have genus, species and variety showing and species2 would be checked off to not show in the report.

I am using Microsoft Access 2000.

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

A:Access - if field is blank, copy field A, if not copy field B

You should not actually need another field to do this, just another column in your report's Query. Something like this as a Field header :-

dummySpecies: iif(isnull([species]), [genus], [species])

this should provide a column with the species in if it there and the genus if it is not, which you can use in place of your actual species field in the report for sorting.

I know the Include Field will include part of the text from an Include File if it is in a bookmark. The format is {IncludeText "File Path" Bookmark}. I have 2 files: Source and Target.

Source is a form template. I included a Text Form Field and gave it the bookmark AA. I also included other text in a "normal" bookmark, BB.

In Target I have 2 fields: {IncludeText "C:\\Source.dot" AA} and {IncludeText "C:\\Source.dot" BB}. The text from BB shows up, but the one for AA is blank.

If I go into Source and look under Bookmarks, both AA and BB are there.

BTW, I have tried it with the Source form both "Protected" and "Unprotected" and it didn't make any difference.

Any idea why this is happening, and more importantly, any idea on how to make this work? If not, it seems like a real bug in Word 2003 as they are both definitely considered to be bookmarks.

Thank you,

im wondering if this is a good upgrade...

From this:

Intel Celeron - 2.50 GHTZ - 400 MHTZ Front side bus - 12kb level 1 cache - 512 kb level 2 cache

To This:

Intel pentium 4 - 2.80 GHTZ - 800 MHTZ front side bus - 20kb level 1 cache - 512 level 2 cache

A:Significant CPU upgrade?

Short answer - Yes.

How much is this going to cost you? If the answer is less than $50, I'd say go for it. If it's more, I'd say hold on to your cash and spend it on a better system a bit further down the road.

The most significant improvement will be the FSB speed jump, provided your motherboard is capable of running at 800mhz. If it's not, then the P4 will be slowed down to 400mhz, and will actually be running slower than your existing Celeron, since the 2.8ghz on the P4 is based on it's running at 800mhz.

Just signed up. seems to be the place to resolve these issues.

I went through your instructions on what to post and where...

but whatever i have seems to stop me from running programs (.exe stuff?).

i was browsing with Firefox and there was some kind of error - it wasnt my default browser so i double clicked a random html from my start menu which opened chrome. i downloaded the DDS and the GMER, but they won't run - windows always ask me to choose a program from a list.

when i tried to remove my antivirus software, i clicked on the add/remove software manager and i got a small window : Control Panel : c:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe
application not found.

I'm running avg 8.5 ~ but with a mess of others since an infection i picked up 2 weeks ago.

if nothing can be done, could i recieve some help re-installing my own copy of xp? - it's all legal but it's registered to my org since i downgraded to XP from vista.

A:Significant Problem

as of today, all my programs ran at startup - this is something new. but when i try to run windows update, i still get an error at the site. could it be a redirect?

so, everything ran smoothly on startup - what do i do now? oh yes! those logs you all wanted ~ i'm on it

I hadn't opened my Win 8 laptop in a few weeks, and had over 20 or so updates to install and noticed one ws a fairly large update, non-security related update to Win 8. Anything significant in it?

A:Anything significant in new Win 8 update?

The best security is to keep the laptop off.

If it's a non security large update, it can be a compatibility or stability one: good to install.

Mine is also offline... but I'll install all updates when i get the chance. Up until now, no hangs or black screen loops or whatever people encounter sometimes. For that just make sure you have the latest drivers installed.

Now, I will give you guys a brief account on how I use my PC on a day-to-day basis.I start my PC in the morning[I shut it down at night, everyday],I play lots of FPS games throughout the day like CS 1.6,GO,etc....and also watch a lot of streams and just beat the crap outta my PC like this everyday.I start my PC at around 9:00 AM in the morning and shut it down at 12:00 PM everyday. If I go out or I am not using the PC,I usually put it on 'sleep mode'. One more important factor,as I live in a metropolitan city in India,we still have some electricity outage issues.Like, once in 3-4 months there is an outage that may range from 1-3 hours, but most of the time things are stable.

Hey there. I have a Lenovo Yoga 2 13, i5 and have been having some glitches with start-up.
Most of the time it takes 30sec-1min to start up and the screen shows the Lenovo logo and the spinning circle. I've Disabled a number of the high startup impact programs in "Task Manager" but it doesn't help.
I'm not sure if this is a related issue or not, but it's also having sleep issues: most of the time, if I close the lid for more than 10sec and open it up again the screen will blink and then the computer will turn off (let me know if I should post this under a different title).
In an effort to improve things I've downgraded the Intel Management Engine Interface from version 11 to version 9. Not sure if I've seen a difference yet though...
Any help appreciated!

Hi people, I'm currently looking to put together a new gaming computer but am currently trying to decide whether it makes better sense to go for an amd 64 3200 cpu or a standard athlon 3200 - is there any real difference in performance between the two?

A:athlon vs 64 - is there a significant difference?

An AthlonXP is hard to come by in the first place & yes, an Athlon64 3200+ even though it has the same P-rating will be much faster with games. You also get SSE2/SSE3*, AMD64, cool'n'quiet & an easier to use heatsink-fan system.

If you get a Socket-939 motherboard you'll get the choice of AGP or PCI-e (or even both with a ULi M1695 based motherboard) & chances are it's already compatible with dual-core Athlon64s which will be available in mass (& a lower price) in 2006.

* : SSE3 is on the newer "Venice/San Diego" core only.

So, I've been discussing this with some co-workers at the office and when we get right down to the nuts and bolts....it's a bit hard to really sell Windows 7 as a vast improvement over Vista in Vista's current state.

Don't get me wrong, there are some features and changes that I really like
aero snap and aero peek
configurable UAC
fast shutdown
But who really feels that Windows 7 is indeed a radical and significant enough of an improvement over Vista SP2 to justify the full cost of the operating system. I honestly think that Vista got such a bad rep at the start that most people wrote it off and never came back to it. But now that they see Windows 7...they are willing to try again and they realize that it's not too bad. But I think presented with a Vista SP2 clean install...the reaction might have been roughly the same.

I can better understand those upgrading from XP...because Windows 7 would be a very significant change. But over Vista....is this really nothing more than a couple of features that could have easily been incorporated into a service pack????

A:What is the significant improvement of 7 over Vista?

They did more than just add features.

They essentially stripped down Vista to the core and rebuilt it with everything they'd learned since. And as a result it's leaner and much more efficient now. It might look similar, but the big changes are under the hood.

You'll notice it if you use it enough, and especially if you were on Vista prior. It's an overhaul beyond the service pack level.

I am in big trouble here. I'll explain what happened to the best of my ability.

Today, I did a massive computer update meaning I installed a lot of apps like CCleaner, Spybot, RevoUninstall etc etc. I cleared out the useless programs and the dead registry files (as told by CCleaner). The other important thing that I should say is that I hadn't fully turned off my computer for about 1-2 days, instead just choosing Stand By. So after I finished updating everything, I chose to Shut Down and finish the cleaning process.

When I restarted the computer, there was this VERY quick popup I couldn't see (and disappeared just as quickly). But whenever I restart my computer, since there is only one user (named User) and no password, it automatically loads to the logged on program screen. This time however, it showed that "Windows was loading" (or a similar message) and it kept showing this message, without changing whatsoever.

I forced my computer to shut down and restart. This time, I pressed Enter rapidly so that it would click whatever the popup said. And it works. I'm now able to log on as Administrator. I feel that something is wrong since the only account I use is called "User" not "Administrator". I click on Administrator and it takes a while to load. But once it does finally load, NOTHING looks the same. The desktop has changed, everything has changed. In fact, it has the same backround that is there when Windows XP is first ... Read more

Recently I've noticed a significant decrease in my computer's performance. I've already gotten rid of ismini.exe, but I still notice lagging when performing small tasks. Even opening a folder sometimes becomes slow. I also notice a dock icon that says I have been infected, but I think it is part of the problem. The icon is a green and red sheild, but if you click it it just brings you to a pop-up with some software you have to buy. Also, Firefox now has popups even at the start page, and a process called IEXPLORE.EXE takes up more than 40 MB of my computer's memory. I've already run Stinger, SpywareBlaster, Spybot S+D, and Ad-aware 6.0, and I think I got rid of some of it, but there are still pop-ups...

I just got a new laptop and was wondering what kinds of benchmarks would be good to make sure it performs as well as it should. I'd like to know how to compare it to similarly configured laptops in games and multimedia applications.

Also, is there a way for me to see the make of RAM I have. I know how to find out the amount, but it never says the manufacturer.

A quick search for laptop benchmark came up with this CNet page. It shows how they benchmark their laptops, and what programs they use to do it. Worth giving a quick read, at least.

To find out the make of your ram, you can run CPU-Z. It's free, you can download it by clicking the link under 'latest version' in the top left corner of that page. When you run it, click the SPD tab, and it will show vendor information, if it's possible to show it for your system. Some RAM manufacturers don't show, I think. Otherwise, you could just open your memory access panel on your laptop, and take the sticks out (while the laptop is off, of course), there should be a sticker or model number or something on them. Put the number into Google and see what comes up. Good luck!

Long before receiving a P72, I had hoped to have been able to view some benchmark results prior to the purchase decision.  In an effort to begin that discussion here, I ran a couple of benchmark tests using MAXON Cinebench and OTOY OctaneBench on a P72 with these selected specs: Lenovo P72Intel Xeon E-2186M 6 Core ProcessorNvidia Quadro P5200 16 GB17.3? I have a Lenovo K330A I inherited and have successfully updated to Win10 Pro x64 and recently updated it to 16Gb of RAM.  I've been relying almost entirely on Windows Update to keep current but recently decided to look into the Lenovo support tools to see what else I might want to take advantage of.  Problem is, I can't get any of the online tools to work and those that have me start with my serial number seem to think my box is non-existant.  I installed the most recent version of the Lenovo Solution Center and compared the model/serial numbers it shows against the information contained in the BIOS and they match.  This website will not accept the serial number so I can't really use its tools very effectively.  Any suggestions of what I may be doing wrong or if I'm wasting my time for some reason?

A ransomware virus has made changes to the registry and seems to have done the following? Suggestion of encryption yet no evidence of that from some deleted files software. Virus has gone to great lengths if it were encryption?
Anyway It has partitioned Drives- which are hidden. External verbatim hard drive partition as well. Seems like some type of USB connections added to Verbatim drive which makes the verbatim drive not seen unless the driver is accessed from this PC. Tried connecting a USB stick which had the same driver files added and it then looks like a drive.
Deleted restore points so that restore did not work back before the virus attack.

Thanks for attention,
I have been directed here after two other forums; I'm infected, and hijackthis logs.
The problem is as follows:
After the windows loading screen (which appears normal in rate - most of the time), when the desktop splashes, I experience a significant slowdown. Anything in the start menu or toolbar are not accessable, only shows the hourglass cursor. Although can access through display properties. Seems to act as if there is programs still loading into the system.
Problem started only after I removed spyfalcon myself. It appearrs that spyfalcon is gone for good (no symptoms assoiacted with spyfalcon are exhibted).
I have researched current startup configurations and see no problems or changes there. Some of my startup are opptional but are controller extentions for forceware chipset (these have always been there). They are legitamate.
I hope to eliminate the drag my system has seem to have developed. I am also into tweaking suggestions, since I have not really given this much attention in the past. I would like to clean up the system and make sure I am in good computer health and operating optimumly. I am willing to work at it.
Sincerely appreciate help in resolving this computer prob,

A:Experienceing Significant Slowdown On Startup

A couple of things we can look for:ctrl + alt + del will bring up the task manager. Click on the 'Performance' tab. Is the CPU running at 100% (or close to it) when the computer slows down? If so, click on the 'Processes' tab and see what the name of the process(es) is/are that are using up the CPU resources. This will indicated by the numbers in the CPU column. NOTE: It is possible that you will see more than one instance of the same process running, each at, say, 25%, but with four of the same process running it will equal 100%.Let us know the answers to the above and that will help track it down.~~~~~~~~~~~~A second thing to try:Boot into safe mode by hitting the F8 at bootup and choosing 'Safe Mode' from the list of choices that will present itself.1) can you boot into safe mode?2) how about this: Anything in the start menu or toolbar are not accessableCan you access these items in safe mode?

If I were able to post this as a low priority, but still request assistance; I would. As my mispelled username indicates, I am an idiot user. I am v. appreciative of any assistance provided.

I am working with a Dell Inspiron N7010, with an Intel Core i3 CPU [email protected] GHz, with 4.GB RAM, 64-bit OS; running Win 7 Home Premium.

Over the last month, my system has slowed down significantly. I'm primarily an ie user. My system startup appears to be taking longer and longer, opening ie takes quite some time. Opening a new tab or browser and/or having multiple tabs open is taking longer and longer.

I've followed the pre-posting steps to clean my system, with no improvement in speed.

I don't know if I am infected or not, or if it is something as simple as memory and/or my ISP, or what. Before this becomes an issue, I wanted to post and ask for assistance and potential next steps.

Please let me know thoughts and input; thank you.

I recently bought a laptop from a company called CyberPower. I heard of them in various magazines and they seemed to be a valiant company. A few years back I purchased a desktop computer from them and everything was great (sort of. a few problems here and there. but nothin' big.) ...

Anyway, I recently joined the navy and, with my newfound transience, I figured it would be a novel investment to purchase myself a shiny new laptop from, you guessed, CyberPower. ... I was excited! I spent around 1600 dollars on it. The Specs? Here.

So. I ordered the laptop, received it quickly ('cuz I wanted the damn thing to waste my time away playing Supreme Commander), and proceeded to install my favorite vids. After a short time of observing the screen and the sexy graphics, my laptop display began to occasionally flash black, eventually freezing the game (Supreme Commander, namely.) so I'd have to alt+f4 or controlaltdelete it. I did receive an error from the game, (I have it saved in notepad...) and when I tried the run the game, it would generously provide a message box stating "Please Verify System Meets Minimum Specifications." ... Figured I should make a thread about this issue in this forum as well in case you guys aren't aware of it.

Long story short: Basically, it appears that the actual output frames (not the frames "rendered") by cards in CrossFire on more GPU demanding games as apposed to CPU demanding/limiting games are about the same as if using one of those cards by itself. In these situations having an addition card in CrossFire appears to have little to no significant benefit, and may actual be a detriment to observable performance.

For more info visit the following link and/or watch the following videos.

Frame Rating Dissected: Full Details on Capture-based Graphics Performance Testing | PC Perspective

At 29 minutes in:

Hopefully AMD can resolve this issue shortly. I know I would be very concerned (to say the least) if I had gone with CrossFire AMD cards instead of having gone with SLI NVIDIA ones.

A:Significant Issue with CrossFire to be Aware of

Piling on....

Most users do not need 2 video cards .

First of all....

Lots of fun things to worry about that a typical user doesn't want to deal with.... and may not have even considered...

PSU requirements and the real fun one: motherboard quirks, like having one slot be a true PCI Express x16 or x8 and the rest lower.... That's evil, but when buy a cheaper mobo, you get what you pay for....

I myself am running 1 Radeon HD 7950 3gig card, taking on all comers.... gaming wise, np.

I am going to buy a new HD for my PC (probably one ATA 133, 120 GB, 7200 rpm), and I would like to have some help about one doubt I have: Is there sensible difference in real world between HD's with 2MB OR 8 MB memory cache ?? I like to play racing games, so my question is if there is some performance gain using HD with 8 MB Buffer ...
Here, in Brazil, the Hd's with 8MB Memory cache are around 25% more expensive. Does it worth to pay more to get it??
Thanks a lot in advance for any help!!

I seem to have recently aquired some problems. I receive a "this page cannot be displayed" error, as well as lots of broken images on *only* certain pages, which i know are working fine. For example, i cannot access the futureshop.ca webpage (never ever), and i visit ebay.com, and the front page is all broken images.

I have run Search and Destroy, Adaware, and nothing has come up yet. I have also run Norton Antivirus, and my system is clean.

There's an interesting little bug though. I have 2 profiles running under my XP system - mine, and my wife's. If i go to www.futureshop.ca under my profile, i get a "the page cannot be displayed message", if however, i go to the same page under my wife's profile, it send me here:

This makes me think i have some sort of spyware, or something or other installed which is messing up my internet settings.

To clarify - i have a Cable Modem, running a 2.4 GIG Dell system, running internet exporer, and windows XP.

Recently, my Asus U46E laptop (running windows 7) has started to run programs that it could normally run at full speed at a stuttering rate (Minecraft is one such example, though not the only one). As far as I can tell, viruses probably do not factor into this (unless a good number of scans from different services didn't pick them up) and any software fixes I've tried (defragging the hard drive, or cleaning the registry) didn't have much of an effect, if any. It doesn't seem to be related to my CPU temperature, either - the slowdown occurs even if with temperatures significantly below the maximum rating. I'm not sure if that's enough information to go by, but I may resort to backing everything up and restoring windows to a clean install, if I can't find a solution.

Starting about a week ago, my computer will run just fine for maybe 20 seconds, then the responsiveness in typing, scrolling, frame rate, etc. will either slow down significantly or stop for 5 or 10 seconds, and the cycle continues. This happens regardless of what i'm doing, but is much more noticeable during videos and games. Whenever I try and watch any video, online or off, or try to play any type of game the frame rate will at times drop to only one or two a second if I had to guess. Videos and games are just about unwatchable and unplayable. Even when i'm not watching or playing anything, and I'm just typing text, such as this post, every 30 seconds or so, every letter I hit on my keyboard takes like a second to appear on screen. Then after a few more seconds it's back to normal

I realize there isn't much detail in my post but if anyone can tell me what other information would be useful, and how to get it I'll do my best to add it.

I use windows XP on an Acer Aspire 5100 laptop and have done a full scan with symantec finding nothing seeming to be related.

I've also watched the CPU and Mem Usage of processes in the task manager and haven't noticed any significant changes when the lag happens

Thanks, Andrew

I've had my system for about 4 years (haha as you can tell by my graphics card) and I have had no problems, I could run all games up to Crysis 2 on maxed out settings (though Crysis 2 was slow at times). About a week ago I upgraded from 2 giges of ram to 4 giges and from windows xp to windows 7 64bit. Yesterday while I was making dinner my power supply (Antec BP500U) seemed to have died, when i walked in i heard a flickering, crackling noise coming from the power supply and the computer seemed to to have limited power flowing through it as the fans were all running very slowly and the computer was not able to boot at all. I pulled apart the psu and it was full of dust, I also tried to locate the source of the noise once its cover was off, it wasnt the fan it was coming from either the yellow thing in the middle of the first picture of the site below (the site didnt let me use there insert there picture), or the silver bar thing under it.
Uncomplicating the Complicated | Hardware Secrets
I don't really know if this was a result of adding new ram, installing windows 7, or simply a coincidence. About 3 hours before the psu crashed i installed these drivers withing rebooting "Intel(R) 4 Series Chipset Processor to I/O Controller - 2E30", i don't know if that could have been the cause of the problem either.

After i pulled apart the psu and tried to locate the problem, i switched it with another 550W psu i had in another computer, im not sure the brand of this p... Read more

Curious about the relative performance of two of my computers, I have made the comparison using benchmark software I have on hand. Fresh Diagnose is the latest release, 5.80.

Here are the results:

Computer #1
Intel Celeron 500 MHZ
ASUS Motherboard
Ext. Clock 66 MHz

Fresh Diagnose Benchmark:
1538 MDIPS
Speed 501

Callmark BM System test:

Computer #1
VIA Cyrex 667 MHz
Soyo SY-7ISA+ Motherboard
Ext. Clock 133 MHz

Fresh Diagnose Benchmark:

Speed 669

Callmark BM System test:
Assuming these benchmarks are valid tests of system performance, is there something I can to improve the performance on the SY-7ISA+ system (Computer #2)?

I've set jumpers for the automatic detection of processor speed. What is the correct PCI clock setting and clock ratio for this processor? I'm using 133Mhz X5.

Does a Celeron processor provide improved performance over a similar speed VIA Cyrex?

Is there a better benchmark test for these systems? I believe Computer #2 should outperform Computer #1, but maybe I'm missing something.

I just upgraded due to a PIII 450MHZ chip ceasing to function. I went to a PIII 650E chip on the Gigabyte GA-6VXE+ motherboard. I had the same motherboard with the PIII 450 and it was working fine for about a year, and that upgrade was from a micro-ATX motherboard for more slots and higher max on the CPU upgrade. When I took the computer in to have it checked for not booting they originally thought it was the motherboard and replaced it with a new one, but later found that it was the processor. So the Gigabyte GA-6VXE+ motherboard and the PIII 650E chip are new. I had just re-formatted the hard drive for a fresh start and installed the normal programs and Norton Utilities 2000. Under the Norton UT 2000 system benchmarks my PIII 650 was getting fluctuating benchmarks from anywhere between 50.0 to 301.0. The computer's performance also coincided with whatever system benchmark that came up running slow with low system benchmarks and normal with the high benchmarks. I thought at first it may be the voltage supplied to the CPU but the motherboard is auto detecting voltage. I feel that I'm heading down the same road as my previous processor, and while everything is still under warranty, I want this taken care of as soon as possible. Can you help?

I have seen postings about computers being slow. Are there any benchmarks that one can use to see if the computer is running as well as expected, given the RAM and the processor speed? Many thanks.

A:Speed benchmarks?

When people say there computer is running slow, they normally mean its running 'slower' than it used to and want to know why. This is normally down to spyware, background processes, fragged harddrive plus any number of things.

As for benchmarking, there are many types Dhrystone, Whetstone, PCMark, plus ones for graphics cards (3D mark), look at the following sites www.futuremark.com and www.sisoftware.net.

However be aware that whole subject of benchmarking is a bit more subjective, the same cpu on a different motherboard will give different benchmarks even though the cpu is clocked the same. So just because your setup doesnt give exactly the same as someone with 'apparently' the same setup, its not worth trying to track down why (all very clever electronic magic)! Oh and benchmarks do not always represent a true real-life performance.

How do I go about improving a CIS score? I'm confused about the benchmarks. Is this just a list of recommended settings?

A:Belarc: CIS Benchmarks?

You'd need to change the settings that are shown as failing. They give a description of each, but don't mention where to change them though.
Many are set using the Local Security Policy tool, or the Group Policy Editor. Neither of which comes with XP Home. You can edit the registry directly to change settings though.

This link lists many of the registry keys that have to be edited directly, and lists the recommended settings.
For XP Home, the Group Policy Settings Reference spreadsheet can be searched for a specific setting to find the key to set in XP Home.

To set File permissions, you need to turn off simple file sharing (Control Panel | Folder Options | View, uncheck Use simple file sharing, last item). For XP Home, you'll need to reboot to safe mode to see the security tab, or download the two reg files from this post of Elvandil's. Be sure to run the undo reg file when done.

These are just recommendations, and are geared more for a business environment rather than a home environment. The Auditing settings for example, forcing users to change passwords, only allowing strong passwords, minimum length, etc, might not be useful at home.

My score has never been higher than 1.88.
