X230T BIOS Update Critical?

Q: X230T BIOS Update Critical?

The Lenovo System Update utility wants me to apply two updates which it flags as critical. One of these is a BIOS update to version 2.65. Oddly, the Drivers & Software page here lists different updates as "Critical". For example, it only offers me BIOS version 2.64. Since no one ever responded to my earlier question about a BIOS update, I am still using (legacy) BIOS version 2.52 and running Windows 8.1. The information I have found about the offered BIOS update to version 2.6x refers only to UEFI BIOS. Since I am using legacy BIOS, can I safely ignore it? System Update also offers me a "critical" Power Management driver (which is also not listed as critical for my X230T on the support page), but in the details it says that it may not be needed. How critical is that?Is the general philosophy of "never touch a running system" espoused by Lenovo telephone support justified, or should I be more aggressive in applying updates?

Preferred Solution: X230T BIOS Update Critical?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: X230T BIOS Update Critical?

What is the model type of your X230t?, ie 20F6?I find a typo error on the support page for a X230T bios...The ISO is gcuj25us.iso.The update utility is gcuj25us.exe [support page states this is 2.64, which is wrong].-> Both are version 2.65The update is marked critical due to a security exposure in 2.64.The readme, which you should read, states:Security fix addresses LEN-8324 System Management Mode (SMM) BIOS Vulnerabilityand some security fixes.==Lenovo Power Management Driver 09/07/2016 readme states:Problems fixed]Fixed Lenovo Platform Service high CPU usage issue. It shows on the support page as "normal", but flagged "critical" in system update. When a update is released to the support page, someone states normal/critical.Then the update is sent over to SU quality folks to test further, and develop "SU install wrappers" for SU to use for the update. For this update, SU folks set the wrapper as critical.=============Update your machine:(1)If it aint broke, dont fixit. [all readme.txt state this](2)If a BIOS update readme states security fix, you should update it.The update may fail; you could leave well enough alone, with the security exposure.(3)Power management driver. Readme states high cpu.You could leave well enough alone, if you do not experience high cpu.Support page states normal; SU states critical.=The bottom line, read the readme.txt and decide what you decide to do with the update. As always, take a restore point before any SU/manual update. Always run windows backup to take an image backup before any change, also known as CYA.==I would suggest an image backup monthly, before any updates from Lenovo or windows update. ie, do both vendor updates after the backup.[This backup would cover your power management update, not your BIOS update]. Develop an update strategy for your machine. Take monthly backups of your image.DO NOT run windows update or Lenovo system update without a backup.I do not trust windows restore checkpoints. I will full image restore first.I always update my BIOS manually. This is a VERY CRITICAL component of your machine. I prefer the .ISO method. Why? You can see exactly what is happening. Do this in a very controlled, attentive environment; not during a rain storm. Your BIOS is from 2013. ==I dont know your pc expertise. As time permits, read the Hardware Maintenance Manual for your machine. The BIOS update page is fun to read. ie, BIOS update fails.. machine wont boot. workaround: boot block recovery. YIKES!If this is scary, leave your BIOS alone or call the support center/reference a friend who can help. Note: windows backup keeps ONLY 1 image backup. I am not fond of that. Use some other software, ie Acronis. Note: I read you other post. The BIOS update is win7>win10.Your BIOS is probably UEFI (with a Legacy mode option). My machine is NOT UEFI. It is fully legacy, ie normal at that time. I asked for your machine model #; this will clarify your BIOS type.==Power management is a no brainer. Keep a copy of your last installer.

so the system has been nagging me to install the critical bios update of v1.31.1.13 but i'm afraid that it will stop in the middle of update and ask for the BIOS password. I wouldn't be able to provide a correct password and will have to reboot to exit. most probable case afterwards; the laptop will not boot into windows as it thinks the update has not finished. Can lenovo support help me out on this? will I just not install any bios update anymore on this laptop?

Dell Inspiron 15 laptop, about 2 years old, running Win 8.0 - getting a popup that says a critical new BIOS update is available.  Is this legit?

A:Critical new BIOS update?

Usually you should not update the BIOS, because if your computer shuts down, etc then your computer will not boot at all, and its pretty hard to fix it like that
That is why you should only update BIOS if you are having problems with it (usually updates can fix issues and introduce new issues)

Hi Lenovo Forum,I wanted to ask for help and advice on whether there is a need for my Flex 4 laptop to update its BIOS.It's my first time opening the Lenovo companion app that came with the laptop and I noticed that there is one critical update.  Here is the installation history: Here is the system info from the companion app Now my question is, do I have to update this or simply ignore it?Just to clarify, I'm not really a tech savvy person. I am unsure if this is safe or not. I read from other sites that updating the BIOS may have risks of bricking the laptop and make it unusable. So, I really need help if I should proceed with the update or leave as it is. The current situation right now is, everything seems to be working fine. I am near my warranty expiration. The only complaints that I have is that whenever I leave my laptop and set it to sleep by 11PM, I open it the next morning and the battery is all drained to 1%. This does not happen all the time, but for it may happen quite frequently. Here is my battery information And one other complain is that, even if I set it to sleep mode, sometimes, I do hear the laptop fan go really loud. I am also not sure why that happens. But I hope all my additional information would be helpful on determining if my computer has issues and if I do really need to update the BIOS. Any type of help would be appreciated. Thanks!

EDIT Upon checking this link:http://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/flex-series/flex-4-1570/80sb/80sb000... It seems like I have dozens of things to update that doesn't even show in the Lenovo Companion App.Most importantly, this has the latest BIOS:BIOS Update for Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit), Windows 10 (32-bit, 64-bit) - Notebook0VCN25WW(V1.09) I am not sure what is the necessary version or required updates. This is quite confusing.

Hello, I got this message a few days back when Lenovo Companion said it wanted to perform an important update after I accepted: This BIOS is only for Lenovo Paris 300-14/15/17ISK. Are you sureu you want to perform it?  I checked the bios I have which is D5CN28WWMy machine is the IdeaPad 300 300-15ISK. I do not know if it is the 'Lenovo Paris'. I cannot see that branding anywhere. I checked Lenovo's site and I see there is a critical BIOS update listed for the ideapad 300-14IBR & ideapad 300-15IBR. http://support.lenovo.com/ie/en/products/Laptops-and-netbooks/300-Series/300-15ibr?tabName=Downloads... There is not one listed for the 300-15ISK.  Does that mean I need to update the BIOS as I have 15ISk which is not listed as needing a critical update. The companion software seems to think I do need it.I do not know what to do.  Updating the BIOS is fairly important thing so I would lik some input from someone at Lenovo before I proceed. Thank-you.

Recently my X230T stopped internet connectivity suddenly and I couldn't connect to Internet as the wireless network adapter failed to connect to the existing profile in the network list. I also had a look in Device Manager and it seems that there is no issue but when I looked at the BIOS there was no mention on wireless network config in Advanced menu. I had an assumption that it might be hardware problem rather than adapter? I tried to use USB wifi dongle but not availed to work effectively. Any suggestions for remedy is greatly appreciated.

Hello to the BleepingComputer community,First of all I'm sorry I haven't finished some of the steps from the Preparation Guide. It's because these steps require a reboot (e.g. Step 6: Disable your CD Emulation Software - DeFogger will ask me to reboot the machine), and I have a bad feeling about the question if it is safe to reboot in my situation: I'm not sure if I have a type of malware which is ready to infect the BIOS - if it is so, then it could infect it much easier during the reboot process.- If there is a good way to find out what is the problem (and fix the BIOS threat part if it really is present) without rebooting / shutting down this PC, or at least without booting from this hard drive (which I feel is probably infected), then please tell me what should I do.- If you know a place / forum where I can get a specialized help for this (seemingly BIOS-malware related) situation, please tell me where I could go.- If there is no way to move forward, I'll go ahead and risk the reboot, and follow the other steps (steps 6 to 10) in the Preparation Guide, no problem.I kindly ask you to please read below the details of the problem as it occured to me, and the things I have tried so far.The PC is AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core BE-2350 2.1GHz, Motherboard Biostar TA690G AM2 (with AWARD BIOS), 4GB RAM, 200GB SATA HDD, and an ASUS EAH4870 card added a few years ago. It's with WinXP SP3, AVG Free 2012, (standard) Windows Firewall, and it's behind a router.I ... Hi there, Yuvaraj ?
Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.

Power down the machine, remove the AC adapter and battery.
Hold the power button for 30secs and reconnect the AC adapter only then turn the computer ON.

If the machine still doesn't power up normally and boot into Windows then it's likely that something went wrong (could be a bad BIOS flash or an internal component might have gone defective during or after the BIOS update).
Also, check the cable to the SSD and the system board.
Last resort would be, issue with motherboard. I would recommend you to contact Lenovo service center and report your findings. For more details, Schedule a Call-back for faster support.

My Samsung series 3 laptop has been sending out popup messages telling me I need a bios update, I go to the Samsung software update site and this bios update has been failing, I have made several calls and chats to techs at Samsung who tell me to do what I have already done, they tell to ask for tier 2 tech, who can go in my computer and fix it , When I finally got a tier 2 tech, they told me the same thing, I told him what I had been told about him and what he could do, He said, is it working , I said yes, but settings on computer change on their own, like wifi turns itself on and that concerns me. Anyway, He said that it didn't need a bios update, even the Samsung website said this computer needed a bios update. I posted this on hardware, firmware concerns, and they told me to post here, I was going to go to a site ,that had a download that checked drivers, I was told to stay away from this.

Has anyone had any trouble with the last two critical updates for WinXP? Update 811493, Security Update and Q817287 update for Windows catolog security were both offered about a week ago. I downloaded these via auto update feature and installed them. After installing these updates, my computer acted slow when opening any program. I mean real slow. It also took twice as long to boot the computer. I did a System Restore and removed one of the updates by restoring to a point before it was installed. (the Q817287 one) and everything returned to it's snappy self. I installed the updates on my other XP computer and it acted the same way. Had to restore it the same way I did this computer. I refuse to update my third computer.

Seems to be a problem related with this hotfix. Buffer Overrun in Windows Kernel Message Handling could Lead to Elevated Privileges:Hotfix(811493) on some computers. Alot of people on Microsofts forum are reporting a slowdown or sluggishness after the update. When the update is removed the computer returns to normal.

It is only critical if you want the latest from MS. If your MSIE 5.5-sp2 is fully patched, you are fine. I do not likle the way MS has redefined "Critical" in the new Windows Update scheme.

You can manually alter the update list by clicking "remove" at the end of the section describing MSIE6.

On 6 March another automatic critical update (unknown) was applied on startup but Windows failed to start after the restart that it requested.

I attempted automatic Startup Repair 3 times having removed USB devices other than USB keyboard. Windows reported that it could not repair this computer automatically.
I tried to restore to the point before the unknown update. This failed with an unspecified error during system restore.
I tried the next earlier restore point before the KB4054981 update. This too failed with an unspecified error during system restore.
The next restore point is a system image restore point (type Backup) dated  April 2014.
I have never experienced this type of issue before when trying to roll back a Window update.
I do not know what the problem is. I expected other more recent restore points.
Can anyone suggest a solution?

Having problems downloading the recent critical update. It tells me it found one update the Q817287, but when I download it , it tells me it failed. Is there a page I can download it from without going to the windows update?

A:[Resolved] critical update

Try this first:

Go to Start |Run
type cmd
click OK.
At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

del /q "%SystemRoot%\System32\Catroot2\Edb.log
alternatively find the following folder:

Change the name of CatRoot2 to Catroot2old

Make sure that it IS Catroot2 that you rename
Now retry updating Windows

I regularly receive emails from HP Support for my HP ElitePad 1000 G2, but I'm never clear which emails are critical, which apply specifically to my ElitePad, or which I can ignore. Can't HP Support help non-techies understand what to do with the messages they send out? Skip the jargon and tell us what needs to be done.
