Random Freezing Lenovo Y580, Possible Hard Drive errors

Q: Random Freezing Lenovo Y580, Possible Hard Drive errors

Recently my computer has been occasionally freezing while I've been browsing online. It doesn't actually get to the point of BSOD but programs will stop working and I eventually won't be able to close or open anything, including task manager.

I tried running CHKDSK to see if that could fix things, (it has crashed since then unfortuantely), doing so somehow filled up my hard drive. I went from having around 700 GB free to only having a couple hundred MBs free. I tried this two more times.

I've attached the dump log as requested as well as the three logs of the CHKDSK that I found in event viewer.

Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

I need some help with bsods on Windows 8.1 OS. I'm not sure but probably there is my fault that this happens. I have Lenovo Y580 and a few months ago I updated my bios to version 5DCN40WW(v2.07), i downloaded it from Lenovo support website (in this time i got windows 7), then i decide to run Windows 8, but this bios was purposed for Windows 7 and now i cant find 'actualization' to my old bios wich was purposeed to Windows 8, I'm looking for version 5DCN89WW of bios to this Lenovo. Now I have 2-3 bsods a day, even after format, I've updated my drivers using SlimDrivers and downloaded actual drivers from Intel website,on the Intel website I had an information that product has been detected as Kontroler Qualcomm Atheros AR8161 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.30) but this device is unknown or unsupported (current driver:2.1.0.16) and same thing with Audio Driver for Intel Desktop Board, product detected: Sound Bluetooth (current driver: 12.0.0.2951).

I did memtest86:

And this is scr from Crystal Disk Info:

And at the end there are .dmp files:

If anyone could help me I'll be very grateful and maybe there is any chance that someone who has Lenovo Y580 can copy for me newest bios and post here? Laptop was in service but they didn't fix this issue and they didn't restore my old ... Read more

Sorry for the delay in responding. There just aren't that many people who do BSOD analysis, so at times we get a bit overwhelmed!

AFAIK, you have the latest BIOS for your system.
Here's a link to it: BIOS Update for Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit) - IdeaPad Y480, Y580

Out of 17 memory dumps there were 7 different BSOD error codes. The differing error codes are usually symptomatic of a lower level problem within the system. They are usually caused by one of these things:
- borked (broken) hardware (several different procedures used to isolate the problem device)
- BIOS issues (check for updates at the motherboard manufacturer's website)
- overclocking/overheating - You'll know if you're overclocking or not. If uncertain we can suggest things to check.
- compatibility issues (3rd party hardware/drivers)
- low-level driver problems
- or even malware (scanned for when we ask for hardware diagnostics from Initial Hardware Diagnostics or Hardware Diagnostics ).

You can get a head start on the hardware diagnostics if you'd like - they are located here: Hardware Diagnostics

Daemon Tools (and Alcohol % software) are known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems (mostly due to the sptd.sys driver, although I have seen dtsoftbus01.sys blamed on several occasions).

Please un-install the program, then use the following free tool to ensure that the troublesome sptd.sys driver is removed from your system (pick the 32 or 64 bit system depending on your sys... Read more

Hard drive #1:
Just a few weeks ago my hard drive started clicking and suddenly my system froze. The drive wasn't dropped, bumped, or anything like that. It was fairly new as well. I was having some issues accessing my files AND I couldn't access the internet through any browsers. I was connected, could play internet-using games, but got no reply from websites. I decided to reformat. Well, that didn't go so well. Reformatting did not fix the freezing issue nor did it fix the internet issue. I attempted to reformat the partition on C but it simply wouldn't let me.

Hard drive #2:
I pulled out a newish hard drive and formatted it, installed my applications and continued on my way. Everything was working great, until a day later when the hard drive AGAIN froze in the middle of a session and this time I couldn't even boot. I was getting a boot error that mentioned not receiving a boot file name. I went into the windows repair console and did a chkdsk which turned up a few errors (and attempted to recover them I assume). I could now boot, but random freezing would still take place now and then and EVERY DAY I have to access the repair console due to boot errors. Almost every other attempt to boot resul... Read more

A:Multiple hard drive boot errors, hard drive clicking, and freezing

Try installing another operating system onto the disk and seeing if that crashes as well. If it doesn't you probably have a bad Windows cd. I suggest trying Kubuntu, a version of Linux meant to look somewhat like Windows (You can click here to skip directly to the download page). Just remember to actually install the thing. Most Linux operating systems can be ran directly from the cd without any need to be installed onto a hard disk. There's usually a program on the desktop that will install the system for you. If it runs properly for a week or two, get a new Windows disk. If it crashes just as much as Windows did, get a new computer.

Also, how much RAM does your computer have? If it's very low (256-512 megs or less) it can sometimes cause these kinds of crashes too.

RAM is good for sure. It has been tested and also is an RMA return from Kingston.
Power supply is good.
The BSODs don't seem to be a driver issue, as they often refer to many different things and also the OS kernel, and happen quite randomly.

I have also noticed very subtle weird things like EXEs being "corrupt", cds that I've burned missing certain files, etc.

I suspected the hard drive and did a complete error-checking, yet I still get many BSODs (about once every few hours and the frequency seems to be increasing). Its almost unusable. The hard drive SMART detection doesnt show anything abnormal about the hard drive.

I want to know how I can narrow it down without swapping in a new hard drive. I have a feeling some path on the motherbaord is no good. But motherboard issues are worth dealing with just throw it away and get a new one heh.

Of course, it could be the sound card this whole time. It is a Creative... so... heh
I guess I will try to run on onbaord sound tonight and see if I get any BSODs.

Any help appreciated,
Thanks.

A:random BSOD errors. I know its either mobo or hard drive - how can I narrow it down?

but the weird corrupt files and suich wouldn't be explain by BSODs occurring from a sound card driver issue (at least I don't think), which is why I have narrowed it down to hard drive or motherboard.

I will try running in safe mode tonight, yet still that won't help me figure out between a motherboard and hard drive problem.

Hi vector74 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Once you have the indication of a failing harddrive, ensure that you have backed up all files needed and that you have the product keys of your software as you would need to re activate it. Check if you can still create your recovery image .
Check your Mircosoft account for activated status and entitlement of the digital license for guarantee.

Factory image is on the original drive but since Windows 8 and Windows 10 image is easier to download with the needed drivers in the support site, then you don't need to worry since activation would be automatic as an OEM systemboard keeps it coded inside.

Hope this help answer your query.
Update us how it goes best for you.

Hello,

I'm going to post two different scenarios that happens when my computer needs a hard restart
My computer freezes completely (literally no movement on the screen or anything, it's not slow it's frozen). And an extremely loud buzzing sound comes out of my headphones or speakers. The same thing as above except without the loud buzzing noise.

I saw that this happened to someone else who had both the speakers and the headphones plugged in at the same time. However, scenario #2 just happened to me 10 minutes ago even though I only had my headphones plugged in.

I built this computer six months ago and it's the first computer I've ever built. I assume it's a driver issue but I can't really pinpoint the problem since no BSOD appears on the screen and I have no higher computer knowledge.

I'm attaching the zip file required.

Thanks,

Wow, this sounds like the same thing that happened to a friend of mine when his hard drive was failing. Replaced the drive and the freezes went away. Even the buzzing noise.

Also you may need to look at what drivers you may have just install/updated.

Hoping you don't have any failing hardware "Motherboard, video card, etc". Those are expensive

Hey guys, first post on here after about a week of solid research and forehead-to-screen bashing (and a few months of increasingly more frequent issues) trying to figure out what is wrong with this computer.

Here's the specs:

? OS - Vista Home Premium SP2
? x64

? What was original installed OS on system?
-Probably sometime in 2009. Here is what the computer originally was: iBUYPOWER Gamer Gears of War 988 Desktop PC - Newegg.com (iBUYPOWER Core 2 Quad 8GB DDR3 750GB HDD Capacity Desktop PC Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit Battle Gear X3 - Newegg.com same one but has some feedback) purchased 6/2009. All of the basic hardware is original, except for the stuff listed in the Other Info section below.

? Is the OS an OEM version (came pre-installed on system) or full retail version (YOU purchased it from retailer)?
-pre-installed in the computer IIRC

? Age of system (hardware)
-2009?

? Age of OS installation - have you re-installed the OS?
-2009? No reinstall if memory serves me right

? CPU
-Core 2 Quad Q8300

? Video Card
-Sparkle 9600GT SPARKLE SX96GT2048D2-HP GeForce 9600 GT 2GB 256-bit GDDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card - Newegg.com (may possibly be a 2GB, but I haven't looked at in a long time, I'll double check tomorrow)

? MotherBoard
-P5Q3 ASUS P5Q3 LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard - Newegg.com

? Power Supply - brand & wattage
-680 watt, I'll get specs on it tomorrow

I'm at the end of everything I can possibly do to troubleshoot this.

1. I've tested the memory multiple times, passed.
2. Tested the hard drive multiple times, passed.
3. Tested voltage on PSU, everything good.
4. Inspected motherboard for physical damage.
5. Wiped entire drive clean with DoD standard and fresh OS install
6. Stress tested CPU*

* I did get errors from the CPU test so I went back to stock settings from my OC. I tested the CPU again and it ran a few cycles with no errors but when I woke up, my PC had crashed with some kind of error saying that Windows could not read from the hard drive?

SMART scan shows drive at 55% health.

What I can't figure out is the wide range of problems this computer has had. At first, it might freeze up only sometimes during graphic intensive operations, but everything ran very slowly. I tried clearing out caches and the recycle bin, doing some registry and program maintenance, scanning for viruses, and defragging my hard drive. That seemed to only make the problem worse as then opening drives and folders in explorer would make for long delays and sort of mini freezes. Eventually after one crash, windows lost the boot record, which was irreparable. I had to reinstall windows, but the problems persisted. Soon enough, I couldn't play games anymore without the machine acting up a couple minutes into gameplay. The graphics would begin artifacting almost immediately, sometimes with a freeze that alt-tab would fix, on... Read more

Hey guys,

So, the other day I'm surfin' the web and the computer just out of no where cut's off and comes back on. It didn't lose power, it just did a hard reboot (no shutdown screen) and came back on. I didn't really think much about until later on, it did it again. So I go into safe mode and start surfin' the web and eventually got an error message from firefox (one of those report to microsoft dialogs) and I click "don't send". Instant reboot. I get back into safe mode and start playing a few video clips on a media player. After a few it gets an error message like before and then reboot.

Now it starts freezing up when I try to go into safe mode, at the screen with the big list of drivers loading. I let it start windows normally and it runs chkdsk. Finds a few "minor" errors, unfortunately I don't remember what, and fixes them. Seems to be workin' ok.

The next day, try to start up the computer and it freezes at the blue windows screen. Same game all over again, except this time it wasn't doing the hard reboot. I did get an error message in safe mode, but I went into task manager and "ended" it instead of clicking don't send. I don't know if that made a difference, but it didn't reboot. Eventually it runs chkdsk again and it finds a "minor" error, again I don't remember exactly. It had something to do with a file called magnetspecs.txt. Anyway, it apparently fixes the file and no more freezing or errors.

The only thing new... Read more

Hi !

Please post your complete system specs. See the link in my sig and don't forget the information about your power supply.

I would have said some problem with your memory since this happened after you installed new memory sticks. I read the part about memtest reporting no errors, but how many different brands and models of ram sticks do you have now ? See whether removing the 2 sticks you added solves the problem.

I would also run windiag on the memory as it'll run other tests than memtest.

Download and install sensorsview pro (fully functional 21 days trial) and see what it says about your temperatures, fan speeds and voltages. Post a screenshot of those readings here. To take a screenshot press the print screen (or prt scr) key on your keyboard then go to start => all programs => accessories => paint, click edit => paste and save as a .jpg. Attach the image to your next post using the manage attachments button from advanced mode.

Random restarts and errors on the hard drive are likely to be caused by failing memory or an overheating CPU so start with the above tests.

I would also run the manufacturer's diagnostic utility on your hard drive. To find your drive's manufacturer, go in the device manager (start => run => devmgmt.msc), expand disk drive and google with the model ID you'll see there. Burn the bootable CD with the diagnostic tool and run the long/extended test on the drive.

While you're in the device manager, click "sh... Read more

Hello Everyone,

I bought a hp computer a while back and was changing out parts till eventually all that's left of it is the hard drive.
I bought a 2 r9 280x cards in January along with a new 1050 wt power supply. Since then i have had random bsods and freezing.

I could really use some assistance here as i have done all the trouble shooting i know to do myself.

Edit: Wanted to add that when this happens i am either streaming and have my dashboard pulled up or i am watching a live stream and maybe a youtube video at the same time. Seems like it could be connected to video so figured i would add this in here. I did have it crash today while playing a game in windows mode while working were normally i would have about 6 tabs pulled up on my 3rd screen and skype on my 1st. Btw i know it says 8g of ram i have 16 but pulled a card out to see if that would be causing the problem.

Hello every one,

I've been having a long term problem that has basically plagued my computer since I've built it. Yet the issue manifests itself in different ways through out the years.

The issue is. At certain, seemingly random points, my computer screen freezes with no BSOD. Computer is still running with fans going. No error message. Sound stops. Mouse is not responsive on screen. Nothing works. Screen is frozen on the last picture. A holding down of the power button for a hard reset is the only way to recover.

Through out the years since 2011 I've changed graphics cards and RAM chips in order to try and solve this problem. I've found that the RAM had no effect on the issue, but the graphics cards perhaps did.

Back in 2011, I had constant random freezing at random intervals during the days of the week whilst basically doing any thing. An SLI set up of two Geforce 9800s. I finally discarded one of the graphics cards to only run one and that seemingly fixed most random freezing issues for some time. Though it did happen on some rare occasion that I could not explain.

How ever. In 2014 I upgraded my graphics card to a GeForce GTX 670 OC and found that issues immediately arose again. I could not activity render videos in Adobe Premiere Elements 8 whilst working on the video editing software with out a hard freeze. Basically unable to render videos in real-time whilst working on them any more.

More issues started occurring later with this same card. When watching Youtube ... Read more

Hi!

I would like to say thank you in advance to anyone who's taken the time to read this post.

I've been getting blue screen crashes for the past month or so and it seems to be getting progressively worse. The BSODs began occurring about once every couple of days, now they seem to happen about 5 times a day. They seem to occur completely randomly - they can happen upon startup to even hours working perfectly and they don't seem to be associated with any particular program that's running. Most of the time the computer will crash with a BSOD but sometimes it will freeze or slow all processes right down (eg mouse would take couple minutes to respond and move to a different place on the screen). I've had this computer for less than a year and it works great in all other aspects (check my profile for specs).

I tried figuring out what was causing the problem and I bluescreenview as well as WinDbg to pinpoint the drivers responsible. The driver causing most of the crashes is ntoskrnl.exe, others are hal.dll, fvevol.sys, HIDCLASS.SYS and Ntfs.sys. When I looked them up they were all part of the Windows Update, and yes, my Windows is completely up to date. WinDbg reported that it was a memory corruption problem but I've run a memory diagnostic test and all seems fine. I'm at a loss as to how to remedy this, please help me out!

I have attached the .zip file containing all the crash info. I would really appreciate if anyone would have a look at it. Let me know if you need... Read more

Two days ago, windows explorer would crash about every 15 minutes or so. Then yesterday I woke up to my computer saying "Your computer could not be automatically repaired." and I was stuck in an automatic repair loop. I did a system refresh and was able to get into the computer again. But after about 5 minutes windows explorer crashed and wouldn't reopen so I restarted. Then I got a screen that said to search "MEMORY_MANAGEMENT" so I did what that said to do to fix it, but now my computer only boots into "Checking Disk: 0%" or "Repairing Disk Errors" and neither make any progress after hours. I am able to boot in a preview mode of Ubuntu from a thumb drive but I can't access my main hard drive because windows is in hibernation. I have files on my computer that are irreplaceable such as family pictures and activation keys for different products.

If you are running =only= Ubuntu then you should be able to access any part of any drive on your machine using numerous utilities available. For example, you could copy your target drive to another destination drive with, say, "dd" then work with the copy. Google has lots of hits for such type of recovery.

I'm not familiar with the "preview mode of Ubuntu" however you for SURE can boot Ubuntu (or some lesser Linux) standalone from a thumb drive and then access your hard drive either raw or even mounted as a FAT32 or NTFS disk.

[if you are getting disk errors or memory errors I for SURE would not want to be using Windows that actually USES that disk; you want to preserve the state as it is NOW and fix from there. Maybe "memtest" would be a good place to start - available online and works standalone and will not touch your disk(s) - just does a thorough check of memory]

Hi, something is not right overall all of a sudden where the computer freezes at night and needs to be manually shut off. I've run some tools like RougeKiller and at one point it said I might have ZeroAccess rootkit but have not been able to show I have it or fix the overall problem. I noticed my windows log had many DCOM errors with description of "The server {9BA05972-F6A8-11CF-A442-00A0C90A8F39} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout." I looked in the registry and it just labels that as ShellWindows. When I searched google that error brought me here.

Hi,

I own a Y580-M772CMH 15.6FHD/i7-3610QM/8G/ laptop with Windows 7 and a few weeks ago I used Ccleaner to clean the registry. Like the dumb stupid person I am I did not pay attention to what it was "cleaning".

Next time I booted up my Laptop it failed to start Windows and gave the following message:

Check cable connection!
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM.
No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key

So next time I pressed F2 while booting to see:

Boot Device Priority
Internal HDD: SAMSUNG MZMPC064HBDR-000L1
SATA HDD: ST1000LM024 HN-M101MBB
SATA ODD: Optiarc BD ROM BC-5550H
Network Boot: Atheros Boot Agent

To me it looked like I still had both disks working so I put in a Windows ISO before boot to see if I could repair. The System Recovery Options screen showed me no known existing OS on the device.

So I powered down and used One Key Recovery which told me when I clicked to restore to factory conditions that the partition layout has changed.

Finally I used a bootable Partition Wizard and that showed me this:

Note the negative used value at disk 1.
To my layman's eyes it seems like the SSD and HDD, that are normally combined by a Lenovo software Raid are now separate. And something I deleted with Ccleaner by accident caused it (probably).

Main thing is, I actually don't know what the problem is and so don't know how to proceed.

I'm afraid my data is lost to me, which isn't a terrible loss, but am I correct in assuming... Read more

Hello, As stated in the title, I have a Lenovo IdeaPad y580. I purchased it approximately three-and-a-half years ago, and only now is it really beginning to chug durings its processes. Point is, I want it to last perhaps another half year or so while I finish saving up for another computer. As a gamer, I'm fine with the limitations of the GPU, but sometimes my laptop legitimately has issues processing stuff, such as loading Google Chrome properly. I know enough about Windows to clean out viral matter and uninstall programs that I don't use that are running in the back. But does anyone have any tips or tricks to make this hunk of junk last maybe six more months before it becomes unusable?TL;DR I need to make my laptop run at least a reasonably sub-average to average level for six more months. Any tips are appreciated.

I currently have a Lenovo Y580 Laptop computer with a dvd burner optical drive. I am wanting a blu ray burner where I can watch iblu-ray movies, and occasionally burn files to a Blu ray disk. I have found this drive, but I'm not sure whether it is compatible. It appears there are several different sizes for optical drives. Any idea whether this will physically fit in my laptop? Thanks for your assistance.

A:Blu Ray Burner for Lenovo Y580 Laptop

Unless it is designed for that machine, and it states that it will work, I doubt very much that you can use it. Laptops, in particular, are very proprietary in hardware, and though some few standard pieces may be interchangeable, for the most part, even the connections for optical drives are often the company's own. You'll need to get a drive from the manufacturer or one that they say will work. (Or advice from someone who has actually gotten one to fit.)

Alternatively, you could look into an external case with a USB connection for a BluRay drive. Since most people rarely use them, except for data storage (double-sided ones can hold 50 GB's which makes a great storage medium) or videos, and they are expensive, it may be best to buy just one that can be used on all machines and keep for future ones. I have found no problems with speed playing BluRay over a USB 2.0 connection (In the worst case, the contents could be copied to your hard drive before playing, anyway, though I have never had to do that). And, of course, since a drive that supports all optical media for both reading and burning is only slightly more expensive than those that support fewer types, it is worth the money to get a good drive. Just another idea...............

After some time esc key started to work for a few minutes but then it stopped once again. Esc key also didn't work in the BIOS. Looks like a hardware failure, but is it possible that only some keys stopped to work? I would be very grateful for any advice. Thanks

Hello, I recently upgraded my home internet to a 5GHz dual band connection which I came to learn could not be utilized by my Lenovo Y580s wifi adapater : Intel Centrino 2200N. In order to utilize my new internet, I purchased a USB dual band a/c dongle at BestBuy for $30, the only drawback being a small piece constantly plugged in / using one of my USB ports (not a big deal). I was able to connect with this device at 5ghz and for the past few months everything was fine and I received blazing fast internet using this USB as my wifi. Recently I noticed I I've been losing connection speed and internet. My transfer rate jumps from 6MBs to 433 MBs as and everywhere in between while connected at 5ghz, and figured my usb dongle might be faulty. I unplugged the device to test it, and connected using the computer's normal wifi over the 2.4Ghz channel. To my surprise, while the signal was strong, my internet speeds were also jumping between 1mbs and 60mbs, essentially the same thing that was happening while using the 5ghz USB. In an effort to trouble shoot on my own, I did the following:- Did a full mallware / virus check ( was clean )- I live in a Condo so I installed INSIDDER software to check my wifi channels: no real problems there- Connected several other devices using both the 2.4 and 5ghz connection, including laptops and Iphones/Ipads. Hi! At the start I'll mention that I am an "IT guy" (actually IT student)  so I have some higher than basic knowledge about the stuff going on with my computers but now even I am lost... I will start from the very beggining of my troubles - that might be a long story!

So, one day (quite a bit ago) I was playing League of Legends with friends like I did for over a year after purchasing my Y580 and the in-game "bug splat" error occured. It is not something unusual, it happens to people a lot in this particular game so I was like "meh, again they f*** up something with the patch". Then the system notification told me that "driver stopped working but has recovered" or something like that, which was a first time for me. I googled the problem but before I could read anything the screen froze and I had a first BSOD since installing Windows 8 (and I have it for a year straight now). It was IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL pointing at nvlddmkm.sys, part of Nvidia drivers.

I started doing obvious things - ran Windows in safe mode, everything was working fine. Then I removed Nvidia drivers completely, including registry entries and stuff. System loded in normal mode and was working - previously the blue screen was appearing before my Windows 8 login page even loaded. I managed to play games on Intel HD GPU and do my usuall stuff without any problems - as expected to be honest.

I did a memtest back then, also did it few days ago for 6+ hours wi... Read more

Hi David

Since you are familiar with computers, i will cut the crap and go directly to the troubleshooting. Please follow the below steps.

1. First uninstall both "Intel" and "Nvidia" drivers completely from the system. Laptops require tweaked drivers  specifically created for them rather than generic ones. If the Nividia adapter is disabled via BIOS, please enable it.

2. Then uninstall "Intel Rapid Storage Technology" driver and "Intel Wireless LAN driver" completely. Current versions are not compatible with "Win 8.1".

Hi,I have huge problem which is driving me nuts. My laptop isn't charging well. It randomly disconnects AC adaptor. I'll try to discribe this situation in detail:First time it was about 6 months ago. I was using my laptop without battery (i think i was playing Skyrim or something) and my laptop just turn off (immediately, just black screen and completly off at that point). I thought it was no big deal, so i powered up laptop again and enjoyed my gameplay. After few days it happened again. And it was happening often and often. Until my laptop started doing this even when i was using word or surfing the web or even wasn't doing anything. Then i plugged my battery in. What i realized, that my laptop just disconnect AC and at the front/bottom where the indication lights are, the solid white battery light (2nd from left) turns into blinking red/orange. So i plug off AC and stick it right back and laptop is charging again. But i can't do this everytime it happens, it is really frustrating and messes with laptop's performance.Basically i can't use my laptop normaly. Somethimes it stays powered half of day without any faults (ofcourse i'm not talking about gaming, i forgot it long time ago), sometimes it disconnect charging 2-3 times per minute. Here is what i tried to do:-Clean everything inside my laptop (dust, dirt)-Reinstall Windows-Reapply thermal compound-Power drain (when battery and AC isn't plugged and laptop is turned off, you hold power buttom for about 30 sec)-Voltage chec... Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

I assume that you are trying to replace a missing key cap on your keyboard.  Since there appears to be three different style hinge assemblies for your model, the best way to find the proper replacement is to view your missing key's hinge. You can then compare it to the laptop key seller's images on their website.

Can you post a picture here?  That would assist others in helping you choose the right replacement.

I've been using this laptop for around a year or so now, and it's worked perfectly up until this point in time.  The issue that I'm currently having is entirely mechanical. At the moment, my keyboard is intact and works just fine. However, if I press a key, (mainly the 'e' key) off-center, it pops the entire key up and I have to click it into place. It's not life-threatening or crucial to the machine's function, but when I am busy typing papers or lesson plans, having a key on the most constantly used vowel key continually pop up really puts a dampener in things. I've taken the key out and have tried to click it back in. While I can't see what's going on (given that there's a key in the way!), I can most certainly feel it clicking into place twice, both clicks stemming from the right side of the 'e' key. It seems that, to the best of my knowledge, only two out of four prongs that are meant to keep the key in place and in line are actually snapping and holding the key down. Whenever I type off-center and to the right, the entire left side of the key snaps up and must be pushed back into place. I'm wondering if there's anything I can or should do. Given that I've had my machine for over a year now, I'm unsure if my warranty still covers it (speaking of, is there a way to check warranty status online?). Please, if anyone has any advice on how to fix or replace a busted key/keyboard, please, let me know!

A:Lenovo Ideapad Y580 - Keyboard Issue

A replacement keyboard (chicony, oki, or dafon are the makers - be sure to look for the manufacturer label and p/n right below the lenovo p/n on the back to get a genuine keyboard) would make a good spares, they are about $30 on ebay. I replaced a broken key on a few different laptops but much prefer to swap out the entire keyboard.  Once a single key goes bad it's likely that more keys will start to fail (note that 'e' is perhaps the most commonly used key on your keyboard because it's the most popular vowel.  Other popular keys like 't' might be failing sometime soon).  So I would suggest you buy a spare keyboard and save it until you can't live without it, the procedure to replace the keyboard is a 10 minute swap. If you want to replace a key, a sharp tipped (xacto-style) knife blade, and a loupe (magnifying lens) are important accessories.  Buy from a reputable site which has good instructions ( http://www.laptopkey.com/ ).  Unfortunately, the key and hinge are manufacturer-specific (OKI, Chicony, Dafon, see above) so you will need to determine it from the guide on www.laptopkey.com.  When I fixed our Acer c720 I also used needlenose pliers to bend a metal tab back into place, the key hinge wasn't seating correctly because the metal tab had bent and was open too wide.  The Acer c720 has a nightmare keyboard to replace with 75 different locking plastic tabs that bind it to the undersize of the palmrest, so i had little choi... Alright, so early I tried to overclock my Nvidia GTX 660m Card, and it worked. the base clock speed is 835mhz, and the memory is 2500mhz. I OC'd the clock speed to 970mhz, and the memory to 3000mhz. It all worked fine, and boosted my gaming framerate quite a bit in PlanetSide 2 and Skyrim. ( I used NvidiaInspector to overclock, btw.) I went back to the overclocking interface, and accidentally set the memory rate to around +1300mhz. I then, without realizing, clicked on set OC settings, and it crashed my card. It rebooted, but now whenever I go into Nvidia Inspector to check my clock/mem speed, they're both set on 405mhz while idle or if there's a high load on my card. It's been stuck like this for a few hours, and I've tried several tweaks to fix it, including a reboot, rolling back the drivers, and then reinstalling the drivers, etc., with no resolve. I really need some help, as this is affecting my gaming horribly, and I'm getting terrible framerates. Please give suggestions/fixes as quickly as possible!

Thanks,
DDInc

I saw a lot about could not find recovery environment and win 8.1 but I think i have another problem. My charger is not working properly sometimes it chargers sometimes not ( and i have to unplug and plug back the cable into the acumulator) and because of this, when I tried to open my laptop it's shuting down after 1 sec. This brutal shuting down happened for 5 times I guess and  since then every time I boot it says "scanning and repairing drive (\\?\volume(f030c5da-d83f-45ed-". So when I realized that something bad happened I tried to return my win 8.1 to factory but when i got to settings/ change pc settings/ update and recovery / recovery / REmove everyting and reinstall Windows it got this beautifull message "could not find recovery environment " What can i do to get things to normal ( to make windows recovery working again). I m not interested in my data I can erase everything PS: Please don't say it's because I change something at partitions ( I lost onekey recovery when I change something at partition but reinstaling windows to factory was still working until this charger problems)??

I've got a used Lenovo Y580 that crashes frequently when a fair portion of its memory is being used, such as installers, or running games. It crashes to a BSOD with an IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL code. I've looked in the drivers section and there aren't a lot of drivers available for the Y580. I downloaded the ones that apply to my laptop but I'm still having the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated with this as I can't get much work done with it in this condition.

Hey there folks, I've skimmed the forums and didn't see much that fit the issue i'm having. I bought a Asus g750 about two weeks ago. Three days after getting it up and running my laptop will hard freeze randomly about once every 1-2 days. It doesn't seem to be a hardware issue. I've ran a stress test on both the CPU and the GPU, both seemed to fall in normal ranges. The hard freeze typically occurs when I'm not doing anything heavy. Mostly when I am just sitting around typing on skype or doing homework while listening to spotify.

It is under warranty I could send it back. However, I cannot afford to lose it before this semester is over. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As I don't have to tell you, a system that's two weeks old should not be freezing up. However, a couple or three questions:

Have you added any new software? Been surfing the Internet? Clicked on anything that pops up to say you need to "install this or uninstall that"? Been somewhere on the Internet that didn't look safe, so you backed out? And, finally, been somewhere you maybe shouldn't have? Like to get a deal on software that's just too good to be true . . . You'd be surprised how many folks fall for this one.

Have you been to the Asus site? ASUS Click on Support and it will take you to ASUS Service | North America

I went there and it seems I need to Login or Register before I can get help, so it looks like it's up to you. BT... Read more

My wife was having problems with her computer recently. Once windows was up she would get a hard drive error and it would shut down. We started it in safe mode and ran malwarebytes on it and it cleaned up a few things, but did not resolve the problem. With a friends help we found an executable file in the temp folder named "IJJGlTIlJx.exe" who advised us to delete the file. After deleting the file it is now booting up without hard drive errors, but when attempting to navigate to facebook, twitter, hotmail, youtube and some other sites it does not load the pages correctly.

I found another topic that someone had the same .exe file on their system, but am not sure if our issue relates to theirs or not.

Hey all, I recently installed an SSD in my old y580 laptop and reinstalled windows 10 but windows is registering the touchpad as a mouse plugged into the PS/2 port. As such, the touchpad inputs are far from optimized and no multi-finger gestures are being recognized (including scrolling  ). The previous HDD recently died but definitely used elan/synaptics drivers. I've had this problem occur on other Lenovo laptops and I've seen others posting about it on here, but never for the y580 and I've never been able to solve it. I've downloaded all of the touchpad drivers on the support page for my serial number but none of them go up to windows 10 and all of them result in an error message that reads that the Realtek Bluetooth Suite isn't compatible with this version of windows. I've also downloaded 15-20 different drivers for windows 10 elan/synaptics touchpads from varying newer lenovo laptops but none of them recognize my touchpad either. Any help would be super appreciated.

I've searched all over from http://www.eightforums.com to lenovo forums. I've called support and they demand a fee to provide me support for my brand new laptop. I'm desperate for a solution because I have exhausted all more likely resources for solutions to my problem. My problem is that the option to burn factory reinstall discs have been removed. In the windows 7 version of this laptop, One Key Recovery provided this option. For win 7 laptops, this allowed people to reinstall the OEM OS on their msata SSD. Now that option is not there. I've burned a system image disc set, I burned a bootable system repair disc. I created a recovery flash drive on a usb stick. Neither of these windows 8 options allowed me to recover to a new drive on the same laptop. I really really hope someone can help me. This is ridiculous.

I was trying to watch a DVD on my laptop and kept receiving an error from PowerDVD 10, saying that it was an invalid media type. After looking online, I noticed that some people said that the update might fix this. So, I downloaded the update and ran the installer. It required that I remove the current installed version of PowerDVD in order to install the patch. After the installer wiped that from my computer and began to install the patch, I received a message stating that "This software can only be installed on a Lenovo system." This was a patch file that the program sent me to, called "PowerDVD_v5630_RiTA10(Lenovo)(PDVDServDelayStartup)_DVD130802-14.exe" After looking at this, I went through the knowledge base and found that there is another file linked for updating the PowerDvd software called "Lenovo.Lenovo_RiTA10_v_DVD110707-07.exe". When I tried to run this I get the following error:"Cannot install the patch.Either this patch is not intended for your version of PowerDVD 10or your system does not havea previous version of PowerDVD 10 installed. The patch installation will abort." Of course I don't have any previous version of PowerDVD 10 installed, because the other patch uninstalled it in order to install. Now I am stuck without the DVD software in this terrible Windows 8 environment. I even tried VLC player and the video is cut off. This is very frustrating. This is on my IdeaPad Y580. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

A:Y580 PowerDVD 10 Update Won't Install "Not a Lenovo Computer"

Since no one is of help it seems at technical support and I finally had some time for this, I was able to track down how to solve this. I used downloaded the installer for PowerDVD 10 from lenovo and then had to hack it. First run the installer (IN12STW153WW5.exe).After the installer fails, it will have dumped the files into C:\drivers\PowerDVD 10 BD\ (or replace C: with system drive I suppose).Edit the file Custom.ini (right click -> Edit)Change the line CLScan=LEGEND Dragon to CLScan=lenovoSave the file.Run setup.exe You can also skip running the installer and instead use a program like 7zip (or another compression program) to unzip the IN12STW153WW5.exe contents into a folder. Then go into the folder you extracted to and modify the file inside there.

Hi all;
Need to ask how to hid all the partitions in the factory installed HDD for Lenovo Y580.

This is the scenario.
Firstly, i successfully migrated all of the following partitions:
OEM/Hidden partition,
C partition: boot drive/ program files and data drive &
D partition: containing drivers

from my Lenovo factory installed HDD to the SSD and to use the SSD as the primary boot drive . Now, i plan to use the factory installed HDD as my data drive. (I am using a caddy tray for this whereby i plan to swap out the optical drive and pluck in the Lenovo factory installed HDD). However, for "safety reasons" i do not plan to re-format the entire factory installed HDD but rather to keep those partitions just in case if my SSD fails.

Hence, how do i turn all the three partitions above (in the Lenovo factory installed HDD) to become dormant? I want the computer to boot up from the existing SSD but then to treat the factory installed HDD as the data drive and not to read from any of the three partitions in the factory installed HDD.

ANy ideas on how to accomplish this? By the way, i am planning to use EASUS as my disk partition freeware.

A:Hiding partitions in Factory installed HDD (Lenovo Y580)

You will need to delete all partitions, or you will have boot up problems.

Hello,

My Windows randomly keeps freezing up on me. I have read multiple threads on this forum but none of the solutions helped me. I've tried switching HDD's, reinstalling Windows 10. Tested my ram with Memtest for 8 hours, no issues. Tested HDD's no bad sectors found. I've used HWinfo64 to check the voltages and temperatures they seem to be fine even under full Prime95 torture tests spiking around 75 to 79 degrees Celsius under full burn.

My setup:

ASUS Maximus VII Ranger
Intel Core i5-4670k (not overclocked)
8GB DDR3 RAM - 2 x 4GB CMX8GX3M2A1333C9
ASUS DRW-24F1ST drive
1TB SAMSUNG HD103SJ
1TB SEAGATE ST1000DM003-1ER162
MSI NVIDIA Geforce GTX 970
Creative Soundblaster Z
PSU OCZ600MXSP
Watercooling Corsair H80i
LCD Fan-controller BitFenix
CoolerMaster HAFX case

I must say the options the motherboard has listed in the BIOS, are overwhelming. Tons of options and features which are all set to "auto". No idea if this contributes to the freezing. It's not something that was present before. It started happening about 4 weeks ago. Nothing has changed in my setup.
I even started thinking about the humidity in the air causing system instability so I turned on a DE-humidifier to no avail.

Thanks in advance for helping me.
