Fans turn on, lights blink and then turn off/on repeatedly.

Q: Fans turn on, lights blink and then turn off/on repeatedly.

I can't turn my computer on. The fans and lights turn on for a second and then turn off. a few seconds later they'll turn back on and then turn back off. I've had this computer for 4+ months now, i built it myself. it recently started doing this but i'd just turn off the PSU (Power Supply Unit) and turn it back on and it woould fix it. now it doesnt fix it anymore. i've re-slotted the RAM (Random Access Memory) and pushed it in firmly, but that hasn't done anything. i've tried different power outlets and pushed everything into the MOBO (Motherboard), i havent messed around with CPU (Processor) because that's just a pain in the a**... i was wondering if there was anything else i could do before having to take it into a local repair shop, lol.

as for my computer specs

CPU (Processor): Fx-6300 AMD
GPU: R9-270x AMD
RAM (Random Access Memory): 8GB Ballistix sport
MOBO (Motherboard): ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0
PSU (Power Supply Unit): Corsair X500 w 80+
Case: Rosewill GALAXY

Preferred Solution: Fans turn on, lights blink and then turn off/on repeatedly.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Fans turn on, lights blink and then turn off/on repeatedly.

First, I would unplug everything that isn't necessary. Everything external except for the keyboard and monitor. Internally, just leave the CPU, RAM and video card installed. See if it turns on. If not, you might try and test the power button. Disconnect the power button from the mobo. If the pin headers allow for it, use the reset button as the power button. If not, you can use a flat head screwdriver to power on the computer (cross the two pins for the power button with the blade of the screwdriver). If you do this, just be very careful. Touch only the power button pins and nothing else! You could easily damage components by touching the screwdriver to the wrong thing.

Some motherboards have a power button right on the board that you can press to power on the computer. I looked at a pic of your board and didn't notice one.

If that doesn't do it, plug the power button back in. You might try and play around with the RAM. I don't know if you have 2 or 4 sticks of RAM, but try and boot the computer with only one stick of RAM at a time. If there's a bad stick, you'll find it through this process of elimination.

If none of the above works, then it might be a bad PSU.

I have a bit of a strange issue with my computer. Forgive me if I'm a little too descriptive, but I'm not sure which details are relevant and which are not for such a problem. First, the specs:

Model: eMachines T2984
Operating System: Windows XP Service Pack 2
Processor: Intel Celeron D Processor 340, 2.93 GHZ, 256K L2 Cache, 533 MHZ FSB
Power Supply Unit: Bestec Model: ATX-250-12E REV: P7
Motherboard: I can't tell, but it appears to be an Intel motherboard by the number of Intel labels on it
RAM: 512 MB DDR SD originally, added 1 GB a couple of months ago
Let me know if you need anything else...

Yesterday, I got home from shopping around 1PM, and I tried to start the computer. I pushed the power button, and nothing happened. I checked all of the cords, and they were all plugged in. Not knowing what else to do, I opened up the case to see if there was something obviously wrong. The only thing that I noticed (other than a bunch of dust) was that the power supply unit was still hot. I shut the computer down about 5 hours earlier after about 20 minutes of use, so it seemed strange that the power supply was still hot. I unplugged the computer just in case there was some sort of fire hazard.

At this point, I called a friend who suggested that the problem might be with the motherboard or the power supply unit.

A few hours later, I plugged it back in to try to get it to work. As soon as I plugged it in, the entire unit suddenly started "running" by itsel... Read more

I would suspect that the Power Supply Unit (PSU) is going south. If you have a spare one laying around, install it and see if the problem goes away.
You can buy a new, better PSU from Newegg for about $40.00. I have used a Thermaltake 430 watt in one of my machines for some time now and it works well.
You will have to check the size of your PSU to be sure a new one will fit into the eMachine.
Here's the page with that PSU on it. It's the last one on the list.

My computer recently refused to turn on. It had been working perfectly the evening before. I could not smell anything burning or hear anything irregular.

On the advice of Corsair, I bridged a green and black wire on the PSU's 24-pin connector to test whether it was at fault. Upon turning the PSU on with the two wires bridged, the fan began to rotate. So either this is not to blame, or the PSU only partially functions.

I cannot figure out what component is at fault, and replacing parts would be quite an expensive guessing game. The Corsair PSU has a 5 year warranty; however, they require me to mail it to California. Being in Australia, this is quite inconvenient and I would rather fork out for a new one. My motherboard, I assume, is out of warranty.

My specifications are as follows:
Gigabyte P35-DS3P Motherboard
Corsair HX-620 PSU
4xCorsair DDR2 6400C4 (4Gb)
Gigabyte 8800GTS 512Mb (G92)
Antec P182 Tower
Intel E6750 Core2Duo 2.66Ghz
Asus 1814BL 18xDVD+-RW IDE
Western Digital 320G SATAII 7200 rpm HDD(Primary)
Seagate 250Gb SATAII 7200 rpm HDD(Secondary)

I purchased/built it on the 19th of December in 2007

Thank you for any assistance.

Hi, I would firstly like to apologize for not being able to update my user CP or tell you what my CPU/Mobo is. I can't get my computer to turn on and can't access the info.

This happened while I was trying to reset everything on my computer (because there was a problem with my NIC). I unplugged everything and replugged them into their respective places, and now I can't seem to turn my computer on. Everything was working fine (except the NIC) prior to my resetting. Now the problem is when I turn on the power, there would be a small delay before it would turn on, and when it does turn on, the lights in front of the computer (for the on switch) flash, the flashing intervals are synchronized with the rate the CPU fan turns on and off. The case fan is running constantly however and it is blowing out cool air. I have done some searching on the forums, and I have heard that it was because I unplugged the 12-20 wire that connects the power button (in the front) to the CPU. I unplugged this wire and the fans still turn on and off, except the front LED's can't flash. If anyone can help me, that would be most appreciated.

A:Lights flash, fans turn on and off, comp remains off.

You gotta do some more diagnostics.
But before I'll start listing them, I have one question:
Before you've removed components from your computer did you un-plug it from AC outlet? Cause if you didn't you may've damaged motherboard or any other component for that matter. I know it sounds silly but I'm just making sure.
Anyway, do as follows:
Unplug the power. Open the case and re-sit you memory modules and if you have to re-sit your CPU chip. Re-sit all your add-on cards (sound, video etc.) Make sure you re-install the CPU heatsink properly. Make sure that all cards and modules are snug and properly sitted in the motherboard.
Note! Dont' ever operate your CPU without properly installed heatsink, ever!
Plug it back in and the try to boot. If it's still no go:
Unplug it. Pull all the cards out except for the video card. Disconnect all your drives: hard drives, cd/dvd-rom/rw drives, floppy drive(s) etc. Actually disconnect everything from you motherboard except for: CPU, 1 memory module and video card (and of course power supply - make sure the 12V+ cpu plug is in the motherboard!). Plug in and power on. See what happens. If it's still no go move the memory module to a different slot; power on; still no go - pull the video card out: plug-in power on; still no go:
- Your power supply, motherboard, memory module or CPU has gone bad - you gotta swap them out with differnt component to test if this fixes the problem; star... Read more

Good day!

My cousin asked me to troubleshoot the problem of his desktop. He was telling me that it is not turning on. I was caught by surprise when i turned on the PC when suddenly I heard some kind of explosion. It sounds like a blown capacitor or something to that effect. I immediately unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. I checked all the capacitors and looking for any damage and fortunately it's all ok. I smell the PSU to check if there's any short circuit occured and there was no foul odor or something. I removed the PSU from the casing for and opened it for inspection. I found out that the fuse exploded and broke into 2 pieces. I don't bother to repair it but instead I bought a new 700 watts PSU.

After replacing the PSU I turned on the PC but i found out that the CPU fan will spin for half a second and turn off. Led green light is on but no post or beep sound. I did some troubleshooting and these are as follows:

1. I removed the motherboard from the casing and put it on top of the table with cardboard underneath.
2. Clean the RAM stick and tried on other slot.
3. Clean CPU heatsink and fan since it was clogged by dirt and replace thermal paste.
4. Replaced the CMOS battery and move jumper pin 1-2 to 2-3 for about 2 minutes.
5. I turn on the PC without the video card, hardisk and keyboard.

SPECS:
Motherboard: asus h81m-c
CPU: Intel core I7
RAM: 8gb

Btw, prior to the above steps, right after replacing PSU I just clean the RAM and turn it on but ... Read more

Okay. I've been having some problems with my laptop for a while now. I had a nice little line of broken pixels going down my screen. The thing was overheating. And it was going really slow. But, it wasn't anything major. It still worked.
Now, the thing won't even turn on. Wait, no, correction, the light for the power button turns on and that's it. My boyfriend just sat and listened to it and nothing else is running.
At first, I figured it was the screen, since it had been giving me problems for a while, but since my boyfriend's laptop went dead and is doing the exact same thing that mine is, I think it's something different. I think it's the motherboard.
Here's why:
Like I said, my boyfriend's laptop went dead too. So, his dad took it to Geek Squad and they determined it was the motherboard. So, now I'm fairly certain that's what mine is too.
So, my main question is, is there any way to fix it? Does it even sound like that's what the problem is? I'm not that computer literate, but I know enough to know that the motherboard dying isn't good. I'd just like some answers.

A:Lights turn on...and nothing else...

My computer is a 3.5 year old Yoga 3 14. For a few months now, it doesn't turn on when pressing the power button. Here's what's happeining: 1. I'm pressing the power button regularly.2. Fans start, keyboard light turn on and then off (Like they're supposed to).3. That's it  - the fans keep runninng but the computer won't boot. 4. I long press the power button for 5 seconds until the computer shuts down (fans stop and I get a power botton light indication). 5. I repeat this procedure, somtimes just once, sometimes doezns of times until at some point - the boot miraculously succeeds.  Several threads talk about similar problems:I have tried every different combination of buttons pressing and durations, nothing worked (including the NOVO button, the volume buttons, long and short presses).I have tried doing this with power plugged in and power not plugged in. I have tried booting with external hard drives attached (to account for booting from USB problem). I have tried botting in with external screen attached (because maybe it's only a screen problem). I have tried enabling and disabling Win 10 fast startup option.  Nothing worked. Today I spent a good part of an hour in order to get to this post.  Any idea for how to deal with it will be welcomed. In the meantime - I've disabled the auto sleep option.

I tried my sister's adapter (Toshiba as well), and no luck. I couldn't find any reset hole on the back. It has an internal battery. I didn't get a chance to backup my files. I don't know how to remove the back cover to access everything. Is this a hardware failure? Will I be able to recover my data from the hard drive? However, I recently returned home and was disappointed to find my laptop will not turn on anymore. When plugged in, no charging/battery indicator lights come on, and the power button elicits no response no matter how hard/repeatedly pressed. Does this sound like my power source is shot? Ryan brand, model# ACR-CC6801 and I am trying to install them in a Windows XP System. Direction say to "plug into Power Supply and turn on!" But when I turn on the power switch on the lights, they do not turn on. Since they are brand new, I'm assuming that they SHOULD work out of the box, but... Any ideas, besides returning them.

I recently had to take my computer in to be fixed only to find out my GPU was fried but the guy there was going to way overcharge me to install a new GPU so I decided to do it myself as I have done so before. So I got a new video card, I installed it, I clicked the power button and the cpu fan spins for half a second and then nothing. I called the computer guy and he said when he had it there it was working fine with other video cards and would start up fine. So now I don't want to pay him yet again to try to figure out why it won't even turn on. I've try reseating the memory, reseating the GPU. The lights on the motherboard and the lights for the power inputs to my GPU are on and yet it still won't start. I don't know what to do next. I hope one of you fine people here can help

My specs in case it matters:
CPU: AMD FX-8350
GPU: ASUS STRIX GTX 980 OC
RAM: 12GB
PSU: 750W

A:Computer won't turn on but motherboard and GPU lights are on

What's the brand name and complete model number and revision number of the motherboard?

What's the brand name and complete model number of the 750W power supply?

Your "computer guy" doesn't sound like he's very reliable.

We have no way of knowing what he did to your computer and why it won't start and load Windows.

Be patient and wait for one of the hardware experts here to reply.

HP all in one PC, model 200-5000 wont turn on. The green light on the back right above where the power supply plugs in is on, solid green. The little blue light on the front, right next to the power button is flashing along with the light on the side (HDD indicator) and one of the lights on the dvd drive. Press the power button and nothing happens. The power supply is putting out 19.5 volts.I have already tried the holding the power button down every which way tricks and none of them worked. I suspect all of the blinking lights are a clue or code of some sort. Any ideas??

A:HP all in one 200 PC wont turn on/ Lights flashing

The lights were all flashing at the same time. I removed the hard drive and CD drive and the lights would still flash when i plugged it in. I then removed the memory and as soon as i plugged it in it started beeping (like it should)  I then put the hard drive and one memory chip back in and it started up. Put the other chip in and it started up. Put it all back together and it seems to be working fine. I ran the diagnostics and it all passed.  Hard to explain what was wrong. I previously had tried reseating the memory and it did not work. When i plugged it in after removing the memory it seemed to wake it up.

I have a Toshiba P50-A that I took apart to dust off the cooler and replace the thermal paste on. Now there's no lights turning on on it, even when plugged in, and it does nothing when the power button is pressed.
Things I've tried:

1. Reseating RAM
2. Taking out battery and power and holding down power button for 2 minutes, then reconnecting power and trying to boot.
Any ideas?

Are you sure when you were working on the machine that you didn't unplug any internal cabling inadvertently? It's definitely worth re-opening the case and taking a look.

I don't own your computer, but I've read that there should be some Lenovo preinstalled software. If not, you can disconnect the LEDs from the motherboard. I would suggest waiting for another forum member who may know, or contacting Lenovo support. Visit http://lenovo.com

Hello, I have put a new motherboard, power supply, and processor into a computer. The first time I turned it on with all peripherals plugged in, the fans stayed at max speed and it eventually shut down. I unplugged all peripherals except for the DVD drive, and then replaced the power supplie again and and the cpu has a temp of about 124 and the fans still stay at max speed, has not turned off yet.

Any Ideas??

Hiya,
Here's what has been happening:
PC won't POST. I can't get to Windows or even the BIOS.
This has been an ongoing, intermittent (on/off) problem which seems to have now become permanent.
There are no beeps when powering on.
I replaced the PSU with a new CoolerMaster one in an effort to resolve the issue. No luck.
I've unplugged almost everything from the motherboard and tried powering on, which includes:
HDD
RAM (2 sticks: 4GB, 2GB)
CD/DVD ROM
Peripherals (including, embarrassingly, the Power button...)
Mobo fan (which is the one that wavers every few minutes)
The only items I did not unplug/disable are the CPU fan and any onboard ones, e.g. integrated graphics.

Some history now:
The PC has been having this problem for some time now, i.e. months. Eventually, it would POST and then go to Windows until Friday. Now, it just sits trying to POST. The motherboard fan will waver from slow to fast every few minutes. (I timed it and the wavering has no exact pattern.)

Side observation:
When removing the 4 gigs of RAM, leaving only the 2 gigs, PC freaked out and turned on and off several times before finally POSTing and going to Windows normally.

Today, I removed the CMOS battery for quite some time, maybe an hour or more. The PC was unplugged when removing it and after so I hit the power button. After popping the battery back in and turning back on, I still get nothing.

Can I turn the PC on with the CMOS battery removed? Do you think it would help ... Read more

I have to hold in the off switch to get it to shut off. Is this a CPU or Motherboard pblm. and how would I determine which it is ?

A:when I turn on puter fans run but nothing happens.

Hi relee_1, welcome to TSG.

It could be a variety of things......can you give us some history on the problem? Is this a new machine? Did this just start happening out of the blue.......have you been inside the case playing around with anything?

Whenever i turn on my computer, it loads the desktop, then a few seconds after it has loaded, it automatically restarts

This happens in a repeated cycle

However, if i make it so the computer has a lot to load early on, such as clicking on firefox or media player a few times, it seems to load these programs, obviously very slowly, and then the computer does not restart itself. IS this something to do with the computer being too busy to "think" about restarting?

I searched the forums, and google, but none of the problems i found seemed to restart in the same circumstances, and they didnt say anything about loading programs early on

I have turned off "auto restart on system failiure", as this seems to be common in the restarting posts, but not tested what happens apon turning the computer on yet.
Also, if this is the problem, then i don't like the idea that my system is failing every time i turn it on.

Thank you for your time

x

Hi .

Have you tried booting into safe mode, for comparative purposes?

If you can get into safe mode...have you tried using XP's system restore function?

Any recent program/hardware additions?
