Laptop Screen turning on and off

Q: Laptop Screen turning on and off

I'm using a lenovo G40-80 laptop running in windows 10 OS. My laptop's screen have been turning on and off all for a while. I could still see the running applications but I cant use my keyboard because it looks like it is ghost-typing. The volume and brightness is appearing alternately on the screen like it's being pressed at the same time then the screen would turn off then turn back on after seconds and sometimes even a minute.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

so my friends computer started acting weirdly a few days ago. When power is turned on, the screen stays black and cd reader makes a weird sound (check the video and make sure you have volume turned up)
I'm not sure what is causing this but if I am able to repair it at home it would be great.

When I turn the laptop on the power light comes on as does the wifi light but the screen doesn't. It's like the laptop doesn't know the lid is open. Similarly when I shut the lid it doesn't shut the laptop down/put it to sleep.I can also turn caps lock on and off etc.I would just like a way that I can access the info on the laptop such as photos etc.I have also tried plugging a vga cable in but have been unable to get a signal to the other screen.Any help would be greatly appreciated.Thanks.

A few days ago, I dropped my laptop from less than 12 inches over the carpet. It landed on its corner. Since then, the screen won't turn on. There is no physical damage to the screen or the casing. There have been a couple of times where I was able to get it to turn on by using a paper clip to press the reset button or holding shift and f8 while I press the power button. Neither of these solutions work the first time. When I am able to get it to turn on, the screen looks perfectly fine. There are no visible problems with the colors. The only other problem related is that the backlit keyboard won't turn off when the laptop is closed. The computer works fine otherwise.

After leaving my Toshiba Satellite running on my bed on a particularly hot day last summer, the screen won't boot up when I turn it on. The screen remains off while the power lights, fan, drive, all seem to power on and run.

I have tried rebooting it by removing the battery and then turning it on again but it still doesn't work. I'm really looking for someone who can guide me through some troubleshooting so I can figure out what's wrong.

*edit* I forgot to mention I have also tried plugging in other screens and it does not boot up on them either.

I have a Hp Pavilion dv4 2145dx Everything was fine one night, and I shut it down and unplugged the AC adapter. The next day, I plugged it in, turned it on. I heard it booting and the lights were going on as if it were turning on regularly but there was nothing on the screen, it was just completely black, no lights or anything. I looked on the keyboard and the lights next to Caps Lock and Scroll (Num Lock) were flashing every 2-3 Seconds. I researched the dilemma to see if there were similar cases which have been resolved, so following one of them, I plugged in an external montior to see if the main components were working and as I plugged it in the screen turned on! So I knew that the screen wasn't "fried" from overheating or anything of that sort. Everything was fine again, then I guess the AC adapter got lose, so the battery went down and shut the computer off. I plugged it back in and the same problem occured, so I tried plugging the external monitor in once again and this time nothing happened, the external monitor didn't even detect the laptop anymore. The powerlight on the external monitor that would normally be green if plugged in and working had turned yellow, however when I would unplug the laptop the external monitor would say NO SIGNAL, but when I plugged it back in, nothing would be on the screen and the light would turn yellow again. I tried removing the battery and AC Adapter and held down the power button for 30-60 seconds to do a power res... Hey there this is my first post here.

So I turned my laptop on as usual to an unexpected black screen and a frozen cursor at the top left. Nothing came on the screen prior. I then tried turning the machine off via the power button to no success so I had to pull the battery.

Now it no longer turns on at all! I've tried discharging it too and nothing

I'm using a Compaq presario. Any help will be seriously appreciated.

I have a semi-new (destroyed) Acer aspire 5310 notebook. I took it apart, (the motherboard was down) and now I have a CPU (still connected, don't know can I do anything with it, if yes tell me) an optical drive, a hard-drive two speakers and an LCD. What I want is tu turn the LCD into an external LCD witch I can connect to anoter computer.

If it'll cost alot, I'll just buy a new screen for 100 and forget about the laptop.

I understand it'll take alot of work and I'm up for that.

The LCD has four wires coming out of it. One has a quite wide connector (pics if needed) coming from the left side of the screen. There are two small black and white wires, one coming from each side, which connect to a small circuit board, which has a wide connecting thing at the end, then theres one small wire which has a very narrow connector (two bit) and nothing else.

I'll give pics if needed and I'd really like some help.

I have a Compaq V3000 that has been working pretty well until I installed Windows Vista about 6 months ago. Then it started shutting off all the time randomly like 5 minutes after I would turn it on and I got that to stop. Then randomly I came home and my computer screen was black and I turned it off and took the battery out; however, the lights on the keypad stayed on...even the power light. Then when I took out the power cord and put it back it the lights turned off. Finally, after several tries, I got my computer to turn on all the way. Then I turned it back off that night and the next morning it would not turn back on. I have been working on it for over a week now and still get the same outcome. Here's exactly what happens:

I turn my computer on...then the Compaq startup screen comes up...then the screen goes black and when I try to hit F10 or F8, a real fast message comes and goes...it's hard to even read...but it says "Operating system not found." It did this before I got it to turn on that last time too...but then I got it to turn on. But now I just keep getting the same outcome. I got the F10 page to come up one time and I was told that my harddrive looked like it was going bad but they couldn't tell for sure.

Please help! : )

A:Compaq laptop screen goes blank after turning on

Well I see two possible solutions. A. OS problem or B. your HDD is going bad.

So what i would recommend is if you have a old HDD laying around use it and try reinstalling your os on it. if it works then your HDD is probably bad so purchase a new one.

Do you have any external harddrives hooked up to your system?

This morning, my laptop seemed to be working fine. I was on it for about half an hour but once I got home, and waited a few hours before using it, I went to turn it on and all it displays is a gray screen. This gray screen is smooth at first, but slowly deteriorates to a display such as this: Laptop Display Example  I really can't do anything else because this screen appears right after startup, and blocks me from using it any other way. If you look close to the deterioated screen, you can see tiny dots of different color. Buttons such as the wifi button, brightness levels, and the capslock still function. The screen will brighten or darken, and the lights on the other two keys turn on and off normally when clicked.  This upsets me because I have only had this laptop for about two years, the warranty is finished, and I've had so many issues with this laptop from the software to problems with Windows 8. I didn't do anything to damage the screen, and no one comes into my room who could have damaged it.  Also, I have tried removing the battery and removing the charger ( which it can't run more than 10 minutes without ) and letting it cool down, but when I turn the laptop back on, I recieve the same response. My laptop is an HP b011nr, at least that's what it says after 'model' on the bottom of my laptop. Bear with me, I'm not much of a computer person.

Is it worth turning off the Toshiba logos / splash screens that crop up before Windows 7 loads? I have been looking around to learn how to turn the off but have yet to find an answer I'm confident in!

If it is, where can I learn how to do it?

I have a Toshiba Satelitte C670 D - 11K, windows 7, 64 bit.

Thanks ...

A:Solved: Turning off splash screen on Toshiba laptop

You may be able to turn it off in the BIOS but it's rarely an option in laptops, but is it worth it...nope, it won't improve performance. I'm sure someone has found a way to flash a hacked BIOS onto some machines but I'd strongly advise against that as you could end up bricking the laptop.

I'm not sure if this is in the right area or not.

I had my laptop on and running fine for a few hours accumulatively (because I did put it in sleep mode ocasionally) last night and then one time I turned it off and when I turned it back on it lit up but nothing came up on the screen.

I turned it back off by holding down the power button and decided to let it cool down. Later I turned it back on and it was working fine seemingly and then it would "turn off" because the screen went black but the lights were still on. Then it would refuse to turn on for a while. I let it set overnight and I turned it on and it seemed to work again but then it did that thing I mentioned where the screen goes black but the lights are still on and it won't turn back on now. Well, it will turn on because the lights will be on but nothing will show on the screen.

I also think there might be a chance there is a virus on it. My alert keeps popping up and telling me that there is but it says it's quarantined and infected or something. I don't really know how to explain it.

Hey all,
So I am writing on behalf of my mother.  Her laptop (HP Pavillion dv4 circa 2009, running on Windows Vista) won't start up properly.  Upon pressing the power button, the screen goes immediately to white.  No mouse, no HP or Window welcome screen, nothing.  I've tried turning it off and back on (multiple times), Ctrl+Alt+Del, and pressing the F8, F10, and F11 buttons (the ones I read were most likely to take me to the safe start/reboot mode) upon start up, but to no avail.  This happened for the first time today, she came home from work and started her computer and it did this.  She thinks the last she used it for was Facebook and online banking, the night before.  I don't know what else to do as thoe are the only key combinations I could find, and her screen will not display anything but pure white.
Can anyone help me?  I will try to get more information if you need it, but as I can't get the computer to start, it may be somewhat limited.
Thank you so much in advance!

Here is the issue, when my computer goes to sleep after it's on for a while when I move the mouse to get the screen back up it shows the backround no icons or anything to click.
Same if I turn it off and turn it back on. I have to turn it off and on many times then go to safe mode and shut down then turn it on again for it to work. Just now I had to turn it on/off 4 times for it to show the icons and task bar. Usually it is left blank with nothing to click having no choice but to turn it off.
Norton says no viruses.
My computer is HP with windows 7. I bought it in 2011.
This problem has been happening for a long time. Please help.

Hi everyone,

From last few weeks I'm having this strange and annoying blank screen of death. I could just see a blank screen (not a blue screen) while either waking up computer from sleep or while trying to turn on the display by moving cursor/typing something(waking up from power saver mode of display, I set display to be of after few minutes of inactivity). So essentially screen becomes total blank. Just once or twice I saw this BSOD "DRIVER POWER STATE FAILURE" but for all other times my screen is just blank. I could see the Hard Disk activity LED on during this blank screen. And almost after all subsequent boots, I could see "Windows has recovered from unexpected shutdown/serious error - Check for solution" message.

Dear all, Happy new year and all

I wonder if you could help...

My husbands laptop this evening will not turn on AT ALL. It was working perfectly well a few days ago:

When the power button is turned on all that happens is the power light turns green. There is no sound coming from the hard drive (the hard drive light doesn't even show). In addition, there doesn't seem to be a fan working. And finally, there is a light strange noise (not a hard drive noise).

I am wondering whether it is a motherboard issue????
Woud creating a recovery bios boot CD help? Would like wipe the hard drive?

The major problem is that the laptop is used for all our business transactions and GASP.... we haven't backed it up, so we could potentially lose very important data
Many thanks and I do hope somebody is out there to help us.

Are you having the same issues when using a standard computer monitor instead of using a HD TV?

I have a Dell Inspiron 15r 5520

It all started last Friday when the dreaded "Plugged in, not charging" happened. Little by little I had the laptop plugged in and eventually the computer just failed to work. I opened it up and pulled out the Ac/dc power jack and low and behold a port wire is broken, so I replaced it.

I also tried to turn it on after that, then I found out the Power Button was broken, so I replaced that.

After replacing all of that the Laptop refuses to turn on.
I do have a charger on the way and now I'm wandering: Should I have the charger plugged into the computer while I wait for the other one to show up, or should I keep it in and attempt to charge my battery?

My lights for anything will not turn on at all, so I'm also wandering if the motherboard is dead? It would be a shame if it is since I just purchased a replacement last summer.

1. Charger stopped charging and became a plugged in not charging
2. Replaced Power Button and broken Ac/dc powerjack
3. Computer fails to turn on
4. No lights down at the 4 light panels even when charger is plugged in.

Thank you in advance if you are able to assist me in this issue.

Hi, I recently put a Thread on here asking what could cause my laptop to have no power on a morning when it had full power the night before, I just found out last night. I was in bed when an odd noise woke me up, I went towards my desk and my laptop CD drive was spinning so I popped up the screen and the laptop had turned itself on.
This only happens when I hibernate the laptop, but doesn't do it when I completely shut down. I dont want to completely shut down all the time because Hibernate turns on faster, but I dont want my laptop to turn on all the time.
The laptop only turns on during the night on its own and not during the day. I dont have it plugged into the main when it does this, or into a network.

The worst thing is that it is usually in my laptop bag on a night when it does this which is really bad because it could overheat, so please, does anyone know what can cause this problem.

I'm very confused by this. Twice now at my uni house where my computer stays out on the desk it has turned itself on. This hasn't happened to me while I was at home over christmas where it lives in a bag (thank god lol fire hazard).

I told it to hibernate last night, turned off the plug and there were no lights on anywhere, but when I got up today it was on. I went to the event viewer but they only start at 13:45 (about when I got up).

I thought it might mention when it was powered on or when something started but it started with browser.

Hi Harryoo7,
Thank you for writing to Dell Community Forum.
Please try to run the on-board diagnostics <F2> and capture any error message or code you receive. When the system does power on, do you feel the system overheating? Can you boot into BIOS <F2> and check if the system shuts down after an hour?
Please click my DELL-username and send me a Private Message with the Dell Service Tag number and your email address, so that we can check on the system configuration and warranty.

I have an EiSystem 4405 laptop 2.4 Ghz Celeron processor with a 30 Gb hard drive, 256 MB DDR RAM.
One night i was on it then it just shut down
I thought it might have been a cooling issue
So I left it off overnight and tried turning it on the next day and it didnt come on
I opened it up and tried cleaning out the fans as I heard this might improve cooling but that didnt seem to do much
The battery by the way is dead in it so I have it out
I left it off for a few weeks and tried a new power cable and it turned on
I put the old one back in and that worked too
So i thought maybe it might be the connection that connects the power cable to the laptop

A:Laptop not turning on

Remove the power adaptor (and battery if it was in)
Hold in the On button for 30secs (dispersing all internal power)
Put the power adaptor back in
Try turning it on

Otherwise Yes, hardware issue, with connector or adaptor

Just purchased this computer two weeks ago. I turn on the computer, open word, type for 10-40 minutes and boom, it restarted, all my work, poof gone, this has happened the last few days. Yes I know save early and often, this really tests that principle. Computer is not hot, no graphics load, just windows and office running, did a full system scan with antivirus program, it's clean, not actually online when this happens. It is an AMD A10-9600P Radeon R5 processor, I just turned off auto updates for windows, it has to ask me now, just in case that was the issue. Never had issues like this before on an HP machine (this is my 6th), but I suspect it it a windows 10 issue, since it sucks in every possible way. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The computer does not turn on. Sometime ago I noticed that the white LED light on the power button was not on but the computer was turning on and working ok otherwise; so I did not pay attention to it. One day the computer simply did not turn on at all. I removed the battery and kept the laptop connected to the wall and I tried resetting by pressing the power button for up to 2 minutes before trying to turn the laptop on again, but it did not work. I let the computer sit for two days and it turned on when I pressed the power button (although the LED light on the power button still remained off). The laptop worked ok for two days and when I tried to turn it on on the third day, nothing happened. There is only a steady white led light, right next to where the AC cable connects to the laptop. There is nothing else. No sounds or beeps of any kind, no fan turning on, just the light next to where the AC connects to the laptop.  I tried a different cord and the same thing. Is it the power button? Is it the motherboard? when the computer worked after the two day window, I scanned it using the HP diagnostics software built into the system, and I got a code indicating the battery was defective so I have ordered a new HP battery, nevertheless when I tried scanning for the BIOS, I got a response the system could not read the BIOS.Please help. My laptop is about five yrs old and I do not have money to buy another computer or even to afford an expensive repair. Tha... Read more

I would be grateful for any help with this. For some reason yesterday my laptop just decided to cut out & turn it self off. When I restart it in safe mode with networking it seems to stay on but if I try to load it with normal windows it just cuts out.

I think it must be some kind of software issue but I don't know where to start trying to fix it. Has anyone got any ideas? Thanks.

A:Laptop keeps turning off

Well, there could be quite a few causes for this.

First thing I would suspect is a driver issue since the PC works in Safe Mode. Usually you would see a BSoD (Blue Screen of Death), but if your system is set to restart when this error occurs, you won't see it. I would first check to see if you have this set up to show BSoD's: Dump Files - Configure Windows to Create on BSOD

In that tutorial make sure that the computer is not set to automatic restart.

If you get a BSoD when the computer shuts down now, we will have a place to start from.

Hi All,

I am using HP Pavillion dv3005tx. I am using this laptop since 2 years without much trouble. However recently there were few important updates that i downloaded and installed. After few days i shut down my computer to complete the installation.

But now when i start my computer, i can only see light flashing at the front but I dont think my hard disk is working. So in short my computer does not start at all. Only lights flash at the front near keyboard but nothing is displayed on the screen nor is hard disk running.

I tried to remove battery and start my computer with power cable but it still does not help. Please advice any quick solution. I need laptop for urgent use.

Thank you.

Just re-read your post...

If you cannot enter safe mode, and you are not offered option to enter bios configuration, it would indicate a hardware failure.
Could be several kinds of hardware issue that can do this.
(Including memory failure, hard drive failure, etc)
Do you get a beep-code at power-up? If so, this may help us.

If you can see your option to enter bios, but cannot enter safe-mode, it could indicate a corrupted windows, or perhaps a failed hard-drive.
Try entering bios configuration and see if your bios is finding your hard-drive.
If so, then I would suggest attempting a restore, after running hard-drive diagnostics.
If not, then my first guess is a failed hard drive.

Let us know the answers to these questions.

My Dell Inspiron is not turning on. But when i press the power button it starts beeping. Gives 7beeps. What do i do, any solution?

A:Laptop not turning on

That usually means the processor is dead. Time to buy a new laptop. Google your model's beep codes.

Was it working fine before this screen-wise or did it have issues with the screen before this?

How old is the laptop? Has it fell or been shocked in any way before this issue? When did this issue start?

My laptop isn't turning on and I'm not sure what to do. I've tried the trick of taking the battery out and putting it back in, which used to work but now it does not.   When the laptop is plugged in the light does turn on showing that it is charging.

If you press the power button while the computer is connected to a charger? Do you feel any vibrations from the computer? Do you hear the fan spinning? Any sound coming out from the vents? Any blinking lights from the capslock key or power button? RegardsNorman
