I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I need to run a diagnostic but I keep getting this message: "There was a problem with your internet connection. Please try running the diagnostic again." I tried to contact Dell by email but it kept sending me back to the diagnostics page. Very Frustrating.
I ran pingplotter and got this:

You can run a full diagnostic without needing a connection to the Internet -- press F12 a few times at powerup and boot to the Dell diagnostics.
We'll need the system model if you require further information (along wtih any errors that arise).

I recently tackled a friend's failed hard drive on her Dell Latitude D610 laptop. It's a 60 GB drive that was only booting to a blue screen of death. I removed the drive, hooked it up to a desktop, and ran Spinrite on the drive (for 2 days). It recovered a bad sector and gave the rest of the drive a clean bill of health.

Feeling pretty confident, I put the drive back in the friend's laptop, only to have it boot straight from the BIOS into Dell's diagnostic mode. I exited out of the diagnostic mode and tried to boot again. Same thing, no Windows screen, just straight into Dell Diagnostics. I've tried running the diagnostics (nothing wrong) and restoring the BIOS presets, but I can't get it to skip the Diagnostics and just boot into Windows. Any ideas?

Hello Dell!
I have a question.I am doing some diagnostics tests (via the F12 button) on some laptops and it would be helpfull if i can somehow export the results to a .txt file or something so i can look at them later. Or are they already stored on the pc somewhere?

Hi AJSPIES,
Thank you for writing to Dell Community Forum.
Diagnostics run through <F12> cannot be exported to a .txt file but you can run a online diagnostics from our Dell Support Site, which will provide you a detailed report of the diagnostics.

I want to run the Dell Diagnostics from my ResourceCD that came with my computer. I suspect a problem with my video card and I am trying to check it out. I've been trying the following steps but it doesn't work.

This is exactly what it says in my Dell Handbook:

1. Insert the resource CD.

2. Shut down and restart the computer. When the Dell logo appears, press F12 immediately.

3. When the boot device list appears, highlight IDE CD-ROM Device and press Enter.

This is as far as I can get. When I select the CD-ROM to boot from, nothing happens and Windows loads normally.

4. Select the IDE CD-ROM Device option from the CD boot menu.

5. Select the Boot from CD-ROM option from the menu that appears.

6. Type 1 to start the Resource CD Menu

7. Type 2 to start the Dell Diagnostics.

8. Select Run the 32 Bit Dell Diagnostics from the numbered list.

9. When the Dell Diagnostics Main Menu appears, select the test you want to run.
I should be able to use F12 to boot from the CD but nothing happens, and the computer just ends up loading Windows. When or where am I supposed to do steps 6 and 7?

I'm really confused.

Note: I don't know if this has anything to do with this but technically I don't have a CD-ROM drive. I have a CD-RW drive that I can use to read and write CDs and I have a DVD-ROM drive. Is this why it is not letting me boot to the CD?

I was running Dell diagnostics online on a remote desktop connection. About a minute after diagnostics started, this filled the whole screen.

I immediately shut the machine down, and restarted. Everything looked normal, and I am running an in depth virus scan right now.
I did a reverse google image search, and did not get any similar results.
I have done this same process on many other computers, and have never gotten this kind of result. Has anyone else seen anything similar?

Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop, was thrown in the trash because (AFAI can tell) there were several keys dead on the keyboard, random shut downs from overheating because fan was dead, had some Windows errors, etc. After installing new keyboard, new fan, wiping hard drive and reinstalling Windows, I ran Dell Diagnostics from F12 boot menu just for the heck of it. I got the error code 0146, 2000-0146, Log contains previous errors. I did a full low level format as suggested by the diagnostics....using UBCD with the proper hard drive (Samsung) utility. After full format and reinstall, I get no errors from the UBCD Samsung utility. But when I go back into F12 Dell Diagnostics, I get same error....Log contains previous errors. Where is this Dell log stored and how do I clear it of these previous errors? I ran the Samsung utility again just for S&Gs and it says the drive passed perfectly with no errors, so this has to be a problem with Dell Diagnostics storing old errors. Does anybody know how to clear this log of previous errors?

Now, when this message had appeared, the battery light on my laptop was blinking. orange 3 times then green. this continued as long as the battery was in. i restarted my laptop with the battery out and currently it is plugged into an outlit and working fine. i did the battery test that was built right on the battery. the test came up three blinking lights. here what it looked like

the 0's are the lights on and the -'s are the lights off. im not sure what that means exactly. i have googled for a while now and cnt figure it out.

i just restored to a disk image i recently backed up. When it was done i tried to boot my system and it automatically booted to the dell diagnostics. why is that? i can't seem to find a way to boot to my system.

A:automatic boot to dell diagnostics

IIs there a start up repair option there?
If so click it and it should boot normally.

Or,when your pc's loading there should be a key (F12 for me) to enter boot options, choose boot normally.

It could be that dell has a partition with all its repair facilities aswell. If you have another pc download Partition Wizard Bootable CD Home Edition and burn it to a disk.
Free Download Partition Wizard

Then make sure boot from CD is allowed in Bios (Del when the PC is starting).
Once in PW hit enter on the initial screens.
Once there check that drive with your OS on it and see if the partition is set as Primary.
If not click Set as Primary>Apply
Reboot.

Let me know how you get on.

I check the PS using the small button on the PS, if I press the button the system turn on (steady green light on both PS and HD in front panel)
I remove all not necessary cards, drives and only left 2 memory modules (each) in MB and raiser. Same 1 4 blinking lights.
I remove the only card connected (Video) but same problem, 1 4 blinking lights and not even a beeping sound from missing VC.
The only component left to change is PS, Any suggestion on the 1 4 blinking lights post error.

Hello,
I have a Dell Inspiron N5110 that freezes randomly. I cannot figure out what the issue is, no matter what I do or read in Event Viewer.

System :

- Intel i5 2430m 2.4GHz;
- 6GB DDR3 (4+2GB) Samsung 1333MHz;
- 320GB Western Digital WD3200BPVT HDD;

Maximum temps achieved while running AIDA64 System Stability test (using both GPUs and CPU at 100%) : 90 degrees Celsius.
Maximum GPU temp in Furmark : 84 degrees Celsius.
Maximum CPU temp in Prime95 : 80 degrees Celsius.
Cooling system has been cleaned and fresh thermal paste has been applied, namely Gelid GC-Extreme 2.

The system passes all diagnostics : Dell Diagnostics (quick & full), Dell Pre-Boot Diagnostics, AIDA64 System Stability Test (1h), Gold Memory&MemTest 86, Furmark, Prime95, basically anything you throw at it.

The freezes occur usually during normal operation : browsing the web, browsing the hard drive, downloading files using your browser.
The biggest number of freezes occurred after a fresh install of Windows 7 and using Firefox/IE to download the nVidia drivers.

I think I may have found the issue. I took the laptop apart again and I noticed that the thermal pad that covers the PCH was missing. The keyboard's metal frame was touching directly on the intel PCH.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1764 with Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 (64-bit, 4GB RAM) that is experiencing apparently random BSODs occurring since 9/3/2013. I have reseated the RAM and performed four passes of memtest plus the built-in diagnostics from Dell for BSODs. Everything passes. All Windows Updates have been performed. Checkdisk has been performed also.

Avast! is mentioned in the mini-dump from 9/3/2013 which was bug check 0xc4 (at least according to BlueScreenView). Avast! had a program update and that has been performed since that specific BSOD occurred. I thought about removing Avast! altogether but, nothing seems to point to Avast! anymore (not in BlueScreenView or any other diagnostic tool I've tried) so I have not yet done so.

I have attached the output from SF Diagnostic Tool in hopes that someone can help me solve these errors. Thanks in advance!

I had a hard disk crash on an old Dell D610 laptop. I purchased a used (guaranteed) replacement 80gb drive from a company in Hong Kong but my Dell diagnostics does not recognize it. How can I create a bootable CD on another computer that can possibly see it and format it. I tried DBAN to wipe it but DBAN also doesn't see the drive. Any other suggestions?

A:Dell diagnostics does not recognize replacment hard disk

Hello,Make sure that the drive is recognized in BIOS. The drive should be recognized even if it's not formatted. If it's not seen in BIOS, it doesn't exist as far as the computer is concerned. 1.) Turn on (or restart) your computer. 2.) When the DELL? logo appears, press <F2> immediately. If still not seen, remove and reseat the hard drive. Make sure you didn't damage any pins. Does it "plug in" securely? Some laptop hard drives require an adapter. If yours does, it would be on your old hard drive. If BIOS doesn't see it, chances are the drive is bad. If this is the case, you could slave it to a desktop system (using the appropriate adapter) to see if it spins and is recognized on a different system.

Hi,

I have been experiencing random BSODs on my 40 day old Dell L501X laptop. Original OEM Windows 7 Business 64bit install. i7 CPU, 6Gb RAM, 640Gb HDD, very few programs installed. The system has BSODed 7 times so far, with 3 happening in the last 2 days. It appears to be random: the system BSODed when I was using a web browser (Firefox), another time it crashed at 6am when no one was using it. No obvious pattern exists. Just mIRC, Firefox, Thunderbird, and TrueCrypt in use.

The BSODs always have the same basic details: 0x0000007f (0x0000000000000008, 0x0000000080050031, 0x00000000000006f8, 0xfffff8000327e09b)

It's always 7f, and the first two numbers are the same.

The system has passed several runs on Memtest86+. I've downloaded and run Dell's diagnostics disc. Memory test is fine. The quick test did hang once, and subsequently has been run many times without problems.

As per the BSOD posting guidelines, full system details are attached to this post.

I would very much appreciate help with this BSOD, as it makes the system awful to use (you never know when it's going to go dead) and Dell don't want to touch it as Dell diagnostic CD says it's fine.

Thank you

The given error code and message can be used by tech support to help diagnose the problem.

It is likely that the hard drive failed and it will need to be replaced and Windows reinstalled on the notebook.  If the system is under warranty contact Dell technical support in the US and request that the hard drive be replaced and if you don't have restore media, request restore media.

HI,
My Inspiron 7559 won't boot, giving the message that hard drive not present/not found. This happened just after I received the laptop back from Dell. I had sent it to Dell without the hard drive for an ethernet card replacement. When I re-installed the drive, it would not boot. It was fine before I sent it.
However, BIOS identifies it as a Seagate Sata drive while Dell Diagnostics declares that all laptop components, including the hard drive are fine.
I first got the PXE-E61:Media test failure, check cable error. I soon learnt that this merely meant Bios could not find an internal hard drive and was searching for a network boot. Once I turned off networking in BIOS I went to a simple, no hard drive found error, which is where I am now.
The hard drive may or may not have failed. I've run six hard drive testing programs on the drive in an external dock. The results are ambiguous. Three (Macrorit, EaseUS Partition Master and Western Digital Drive Tester) all give the drive a clean bill of health. Three others (HD Sentinel, HDD Scan and  Crystal Disk Info), however, all reports various degrees of ill-health. Copies of the results of these tests are attached in a PDF file.
Anyway, I can read and navigate the drive with Windows Explorer in an external dock.
I don't want to abandon the drive as I have a lot of software loaded that I can't easily or plain can't reload.

A:got the windows 10 free upgrade and used the dell diagnostics tool to upgrade driver and bios everything worked fine until the update of the bios!!!!

I called dell they told me in not so many words my motherboard was Fried and they would not replace it.

Dell just saying it's a "possibility" the motherboard might need to be replace. No one can tell you that motherboard is definite "Fried" without first looking at the system.
What is the system model number and version of windows before upgrading to windows 10? Example: Dell Inspiron 3543, windows 10
You're able to boot into BIOS(F2 key) and diagnostic (F12 key) ?
1. Power off computer
2. Power on computer, quickly start tapping F2 key ( BIOS) or F12 key( BIOS) continuously

Hi guys

Im looking for any computer based diagnostic software or "hardware and software" (similar to vehicle diagnotics)

I have used some software that scans every sensor and any software and data stored on any drive.

but would like something a lot more thorough

such as, software that scans everything such as the voltages on any sensor and any possible piece of hardware,What is being stored and can be "rescued" from any device connected to the said computer/s

and so on.. does anyone know of anything like this?

Rob

With all the different Hardware and Software manufacturers out there, and all the make and models of components within all the different computers, you won't find any 1 program capable of reading everything. Closest thing I have seen would be the Ultimate Boot CD which contains dozens of freeware programs for hardware diagnosis, but nothing really for software.

At Build this year, we gave a sneak preview of a set of new APIs designed to provide diagnostic information about running apps. You can see the videos here and here ? but note that these were based on a pre-release implementation. So, while the Build videos are still correct on broad functionality, the final API names are almost all slightly different. Plus, we added a couple of extra features after Build.

The final versions for the upcoming release are available in the Insider builds from Build 16226, along with the corresponding SDK.

At a high level, these APIs allow an app to:
Enumerate a list of running apps, including UWP apps, Win32 apps, system services and so on.
For each app, get process-specific metrics on:
Memory usage (private commit and working set).
CPU usage.
Disk reads and writes.

For each UWP app, get additional metrics on:
Memory usage (including shared commit) equivalent to the Windows.System.MemoryManager report previously available to an app for its own usage.
State info: running, suspending, suspended, not running.
Energy quota info: under or over.
Enumerate a list of any background tasks that are active for the app, including name, trigger type and entry point.
Enumerate all the processes for the app (using an enhancement to the existing Windows.System.Diagnostics.ProcessDiagnosticInfo class that was previously restricted to an app for its own usage).
The API has a simple hierarchical structure:
The AppDiagnosticInfo type represents a single ... Read more

My puter has been giving me error messages that I didn't have enough RAM to open some pages on the internet, so I did what any self respecting gameaholic would do, I went and bought more. I installed 768 SDRAM. And low and behold, I now have lots and lots of memory and no longer get those pesky little messages. However, when I check settings to see the performance of my new memory, it says that I only have 62% of the RAM available. This is with no windows open, I'm not on the internet, nothing. How could this be?..Is there a diagnostics program I can run that will tell me what hog is in my RAM? (no pun intended)...my system is a Windows 98 with a Pentium II. I read extensively on my mb to get the correct memory, so I don't think that is the problem...what the heck could it be?

any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

JA8231 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!Wish I had good news for you, but I don't ... The UEFI diagnostics you refer to are linked to the Win8.1 page for your PC, but NOT to the Win10 page: http://h20565.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/readIndex?sp4ts.oid=5229456&swLangOid=8&swEnvOid=4158 This could be a simple oversight by HP, in which you could then download and install the diagnostics from the Win8.1 page.  Or, it could more likely be that those do not work in Win10 -- in which you're then out of luck. My suggestion is to try downloading and install them anyway, they might just work.Good Luck

I was on a game when I got a BSOD (Blue screen of death.) I ignored it as you usually get them every now and then. I restarted as usual and I opened a program and it crashed; I opened it again and it came up with another BSOD with the error of 'System service exception' when it rebooted, it came up with HP Diagnostics UEFI. I was going to reboot when I thought I should test it as the laptop is around 2 and a half years old. It came back with Memory Slot 2: Bottom slot right failed the memory test (RAM) and Hard Drive 1 component test failed. I am slightly worried as there is only 1 HDD on the laptop and I don't want to lose half of my RAM. Does anybody know what I should do?

Wanted to make sure I described the situation correctly.
I have Windows installed on a single Hard Drive computer with RAID selected (don't ask me why that's how I received it)
I have a Kingston SSD.
ePSA passes.
Dell Diagnostics Long Test gives a "S.M.A.R.T. Wear Level use warning" on the SSD
Kingston's diagnostics software reports no errors on both short and extended S.M.A.R.T tests.
I don't see anything wrong with the laptop, except I have now started imagining sometimes Windows is slow to boot up. Otherwise laptop runs great.
So how can I reliably discover if my SSD is dying or not given two conflicting reports? Should I trust Dell's Diagnostics over the manufacturer (Kingston)?

A:SSD Diagnostics Warning

Does the Kingston test note anything about "wear" or how much life is remaining?
I have Samsung and Intel SSD's.  Their diagnostic programs also include the health of the SSD and the Intel even includes how much life is left.
With a single boot drive, you should change the BIOS to "AHCI" (default BIOS setting for most PC's).  This may have an affect on the boot time.

Hello .... this is my first posting after finding this great website resourse and a search of the archive still leaves me uncertain about the compatibility of manufacturer supplied diagnostic programs for external USB hard drives.

Do these diagnostics (like SeaTools) fully work on external USB hard drives?

I've often used these manufacturer supplied diagnostics on my internal IDE or SATA HDs with no problems in getting the diagnostic program to recognize and perform all the various tests.

However, for my external HDs, only the Generic tests are available to me with SeaTools for Windows (i.e. SMART test or Info Report are shown to be not supported on my Seagate and Maxtor external drives). And booting Seetools from a FreeDOS bootable CD will not even recognize these USB drives at all.

Recently, I purchased and placed two new 500GB HDs into external USB enclosures:

1. A Maxtor Basics SATA II/300 that generates very loud annoying clicks while seeking and;

2. A Seagate ST350064 Ultra/100 which has a constant high pitched whine (that drives me nuts).

I've tried different enclosures and also no enclosures with no reduction with regards to the noises.

The SeaTools Windows Version for Windows XP Pro SP2 does see them and can perform the Generic Tests that report no problems.

Am I correct in assuming that I'll first need to remove them from the USB enclosures and connect them on the IDE and SATA connectors on my desktop unit before I can ... Read more

SeaTools for Windows
SeaTools for Windows has replaced SeaTools Online and PowerMax. SeaTools for Windows is a comprehensive, easy-to-use diagnostic tool that helps you quickly determine the condition of the disc drive in your external hard drive, desktop or notebook computer. It includes several tests that will examine the physical media on your Seagate or Maxtor disc drive and any other non-Seagate disc drive.

SeaTools for Windows tests USB, 1394, ATA (PATA/IDE), SATA and SCSI drives. It installs onto your system. SeaTools for Windows is completely data safe.Click to expand...

Although I don't like those sounds
I would suggest that you coninue to make backups to external Media
If the USB Drive is your backup Media, then at least you have the backup in two areas

What is the difference(s) between the 40 Minute "Full Test" Diagnostics run online on the Dell website at http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/servicetag/CQ37W52/diagnose?s=BSD and the Diagnostics run via Dell Support Assist software (10 Minute "Default" Scan & 15 Minute "Stress Scan" = Total of 25 Minutes)?
Since the Dell Support Assist Diagnostics are only 25 Minutes total, that is 15 Minutes less time (37.5% less time) than the 40 Minutes online Diagnostics.

I can't find the WD Data Lifeguard CD download anywhere on their site, only here now: Data Lifeguard Diagnostic For Western Digital Drives

The more direct Download link there I've bookmarked is Western Digital Data Lifeguard CD ISO (extract first). Please advise if there is a reason not to use this link.

What could explain why a major tech company would only offer bootable floppy diagnostics for all of their drives old and new? I mean they literally repeat the floppy download on every single model's Downloads page. Does that strike anyone else to be as mammoth as Support incompetence can get?

Hey Greg,

It seems that you have to look up the model number at WD for the drive first before seeing the downloads for Data Lifeguard.WD Support / Downloads / Select Product
