VMware Player and multiple host adapters issue

Q: VMware Player and multiple host adapters issue

Goal: To have host machine (win7) to use wired interface (lan1) (10.89.228.171) as default, while vm (winxp) uses wireless interface (wireless1) (192.168.1.2) as default. Each interface is a seperate network and seperate isp.

Using Vmware player 3.1.3

I have set the VM to bridged mode, and bridged that virtual adapter to the wireless interface with vmnetcfg. VM is now able to get out on the internet, ipchicken shows its going out on the wireless isp.

On the host machine, I am also going out on the wireless interface.
I changed metric on wired (lan1) to 1 for gateway AND interface
changed metric on wireless (wireless1) to 100 for interface (no gateway option)

Now, the host machine goes out on the lan1 gateway, great!
Also changed adapter priority, set lan1 above wireless1

Now, when going back to the VM, it is not able to get out on the internet.

If I remove metric for gateway on lan1, I will default back to wireless on the host, Even with the
priority showing lan1 before wireless1..

I guess what im asking windows to do is route all traffic from host through lan1, and route all traffic from vm through wireless1, concurrently.

Help !

Preferred Solution: VMware Player and multiple host adapters issue

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I don't need help, I just wanted to post my solution.

I recently setup the latest version of Vmware player on Ubuntu 13.04 and found myself unable to download the tools for it. error try again later or something along those lines. I searched about online for answers but google only presented 1 relevant topic and it didn't have a solution. Anyways I've discovered how to get around this, it's quite obvious really, I feel dumb for taking so long to figure it out. Lauch VMware player as root, then the tools will download successfully. Hopefully this will save someone a world of heart-ache.

I have a pretty elaborate home network consisting of a wired gigabit ethernet primary network and a wireless-N wireless network. everything i have been able to get functioning flawlessly excluding getting the windows shares and ps3 media server i run from a wired windows 7 64-bit server to share across the wireless portion of my network. i attempted to fix this issue by purchasing a 2nd adapter for said server so that it would have both a wired and wireless connection and be able to share across both the 192.x.x.x subnet(which already works) and the 10.x.x.x subnet(which hasnt been. I now have the 2nd adapter setup without a gateway as to not confuse internet traffic going FROM said server so it will use the primary wired gigabit adapter instead of wireless. I am able to ping from the wireless side of the network back to the servers assigned wireless IP but for some reason still cannot see the shares, i have been unable to find any adapter specific share settings in win7 thus far and am wondering if i am missing something. any help is appreciated. I have gone through several tech forums but unable to find answer for it. Though in multiple forums one statement was common that Windows will strip the VLAN information when packet received/transmits through network adapter.

Hi there

not a big problem but if my HOST has a wifi connection to the internet then a VM (or at least Networking) )doesn't work when enabling BRIDGED networking (NAT works OK but I need Bridged !!))

If I connect the host to my internet via Ethernet or to a "Wifi-->Ethernet bridge" then bridged networking is fine.

I usually use the wifi-ethernet bridge anyway as it's humungously more stable than the basic wifi cards (and the bridge connects to my Internet at fast 5GHZ wifi - avoiding contention problems on 2.4GHZ network).

Hi all,
I am running RHEL4 as Guest OS in Dell studio 1555 laptop using VMWare Work Station with Windows XP SP3 as host OS in my Dell Studio 1555 model. But I am not able to set the display properly in RHEL4 which can perfectly fit to the laptop screen so that I can get rid of the troublesome job of scrolling to view the full page. I have at present chosen These options.
Hardware:
Monitor Type: LCD panel 1600 X 1200
Video Card: VESA driver (generic)
Settings:
Resolution: 1600 X 1200
Color Depth: Millions of Colors

I tried various other options. But nothing else seems to be suitable. Do I have to install some dedicated driver to get the resolution option of 1600 X 900 which is the Display resolution of my Host OS (Windows XP). Dell Studio Laptops use ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 Display Adapters for 1555 model.

Can you please suggest me which option should I choose in RHEl 4 to get the 1600 X 900 resolution option and get rid of this problem?

Thanks,

Not that familiar with VMWare, but from Chapter 5 in the User Guide, if you install the VMWare tools:

Lets you drag and drop files between host operating systems and Windows, Linux,
Solaris, and FreeBSD guest operating systems

Chapter 8, titled Transferring Files and Text

You can transfer files directly over the network if you are not using NAT for the network connection type.

So I decided to dig out some old operating system install disks to play with on my PC. However, when the OS install requires a reboot, the VM breaks and gives endless C++ runtime errors indicating something in regards to "pure functions", no error number visible on screen. To stop the C++ errors from appearing I must go into Task Manager and end the VMware process. When relaunching the VMware program, the VM that was running during the crash is in-accessible and requires the "Take Ownership" command, but when clicking that option I just get another error. To solve this issue I can reboot my host PC, but the VMs just cause the issue all over again. This crash also occurs when connecting host drives to the VM, or removing the virtual CD drive and reconnecting it.

My VMware Player has been crashing a lot. In fact once there was a series of about 5 fatal error dialogs which cascaded in a rather aesthetic and soothing fashion. Before I go to VMware for help, does anyone here have any advice which might smooth out the process.

A:My VMware Player has been crashing a lot

(Sorry for posting the OP in the wrong place.)

I narrowed down the cause of the crashes to the USB ports. I'm going to try changing the ports from 3.0 to 2.0. I can't find any information on this type of issue in the PDF docs or at the website. Maybe it'll crash again soon and generate a report/log which I can submit to VMware.

Edited to add:

Good news and bad new. The good news is that I now have an error report. The bad news obviously is that switching to 2.0 didn't work.

So I installed VMware Player because I would like to run Ubuntu in a virtual machine.

I tried creating a virtual machine with the Ubuntu .iso file I downloaded from Ubuntu. Everything went as it should but when I try to play the Ubuntu Virtual Machine I get the following (see screenshot).

I am not understanding exactly what this means. Could it be because the .iso file I downloaded is the 64-bit version and I should of downloaded the 32-bit version? I downloaded the 64-bit version because my system is 64-bit. I currently run Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.

Any input would be appreciate it. Thanks.

You need to check the system BIOS like is described in the error message. There should be an option that is labeled like what's in the message or it may be called Virtualization or something similar.

Tutorial: Install Windows in UEFI mode as a virtual machine.

Here we are, we want to test the new UEFI installation of Windows (Vista, 7, 8 and later) on out pc.

If we don't have UEFI natively, or even if we do, we can test this under a virtual machine in VMware Player.
Keep in mind that UEFI in VM's is disabled by default.

Used software: VMware Player 5.0.1 (this translates to VMware Workstation 9.0.1 for the Workstation users).
We create a new VM for this purpose with one of the supported OS types.

Don't enable UEFI under a standard (older) virtual machine that is already installed or used because it will not boot anymore!

How to enable UEFI in Player:
We use VM_Tweaker and open our virtual machine's VMX (settings) file with it.
(this is a followup on the VM Tweaker tweaks I discovered here).

In this example, it's a Win7 x64 machine (beta 7000 more precisely, long expired, but it's just a test for UEFI boot).

After marking in the check-box, we click apply changes.

Then the file will be saved. If we search for the changes, there will be a new setting available:

Code:
firmware = "efi"

We start up the machine with the installer disk and install Windows normally.

After all is done, we check the partitions in the VM's Disk Management just to confirm.

Yes. The expected EFI System Partition is there.

That concludes this example. It works.
We can use this type of VM install since Windows Vista, so our Windows 7 and Windows 8 will work fine and ... Read more

by the way, my computer has a Win 7 Ultimate OS with 4G RAM and only has built-in for it's video graphics

A:virtualbox or VMware Player

VMware or VitrualBox does not really matter unless you have some kind of specific job. In your case you are just learning an OS and either is just fine. I would just say try out both of them as it will not hurt doing so. Some people like VirtualBox more for the GUI and others prefer VMware for its perks so honestly this is kind of a bit of personal preference when just using it more as a non-commercial product.

The hardware and operating system you have listed is fine for just dabbling with a Linux VM. More ram could help in some instances and dedicated hardware could help in some ways. However, unless you are expecting to need major hardware acceleration what you have is just fine for learning the distro if this is before you decide to actually partition it onto one of your systems disks.

Hi,

I have a wireless router and my desktop (Windows XP) is connected to it by an USB Wireless Adapter.

I am wondering if having more than one USB Wireless Adapters will do anything with the connection in any way? For example, will having 2 Adapters make my connection better if both is at full bars?

I have 2 Wireless Adapters right now, One is Netgear and the other is D-Link.

Thank you for your Response.
Sorry if this is in wrong section.

A:Multiple Wireless Adapters

No, two wireless adapters won't effectively do anything to enhance your signal since your computer only
uses one at a time to connect to the Internet.

Hope that info answers your question.

This will show you how to manually update a VM in VMware Player to the latest hardware version.

Upgrading VM's to the latest version of Workstation is easy to do in VMware Workstation because there is a UI button that simplifies this task.

If you're using VMware Player only, you've probably noticed that you cannot upgrade a VM because there is no button for this anywhere.

The good news is that we can upgrade the VM maunally by editing the machine's VMX file.

In this example, we'll upgrade from version 8 to 9.
The used VM is a Win8 that uses version 8 of Workstation's hardware:

We will upgrade the virtual machine to the (now) latest version which is 9.
To do this, open the desired VMX in your Notepad, Notepad++ or any other text editor:
Close the VM and close Player.
Modify the highlighted text just like in the picture and set it to 9:
in code:

Code:
config.version = "8"
virtualHW.version = "9"

You may have an 8 here or even 7 or 6 if the machine is older.

IMPORTANT:
The config is set to 8. Leave it this way or the VM won't start with a 9 here.

After the 'one number change' we are ready:
Start Player and see:
The upgrade provides newer hardware and improvements. After starting the VM, the operating system installed there will detect new drivers and a re-installation of the VM Tools may be required.

That's it.

Ok, I'm going to write down the question quickly, then I'll write the backstory so people who have any interest will know.

I would like to get an iPod touch working on an Ubuntu computer, but I don't want to jailbreak the iPod. Is it possible to get the iPod touch to sync with iTunes in an XP Home VM or Vista VM in VMware player?

Ok, here's the background in case anyone's interested.

My sister wants to completely wipe her Vaio's HD and start fresh (she's never done it on her current computer). The problem, though, is that Best Buy refused to give her an XP reinstallation CD when she bought her computer (even after requesting one). So, she has no operating system to install. I have a copy of Vista that I'm currently not using because it came with a Dell Vostro that I put Ubuntu on, so I thought I'd find drivers from Sony and give that to her. Then I remembered that I heard once that Windows disks that come from one computer manufacturer will detect if the computer isn't the right brand, and won't install on another brand (please correct me if I'm wrong on this; that would change everything). So, I offered to help her get started on Ubuntu. A major roadblock, though, is that her husband uses an iPod touch, which can't be used in Ubuntu without jailbreaking it. When I was drifting to sleep, I remembered that VMware player has some support for some USB devices, but I have very little experience with VMware player... Read more
