Weird wireless internet activity. Any help?

Q: Weird wireless internet activity. Any help?

Sup forum?
Decided to come here before I decide to reformat and be left in the lurch and basically updateless.

Backstory: OK so the household has never had 'decent' internet as such and it has always been quite slow because of where we are, old house, etc etc.
We must be on some sort of low band 'talktalk' internet which has to be 3mb or 4mb at the most 5mb, nothing major. It is forever lagging out often reconnecting seconds later or there has been problems with our regional providing tower which means we've been out of internet due to technical problems or weather
Speed.net tests have resulted in around the 4.5mb on a good day and that's if noones using except on person. When everyone is using it its considerably slower because of the obvious bandwidth consumption.

So lately, and realising the problem it must be for a good 3-4 months now, things have been becoming a bit temperamental to do with the internet connectivity from the wireless router to my laptop. But it was only little things so I just assumed it was bandwidth or our provider had done something etc.

Well anyway, things like messengers started signing themselves out and then back in again, often lagging out before it happens meaning I don't get what people have said or messages haven't been sent. This happens mostly for Live Messenger and Skype. Only Skype now because I no longer use Live Messenger and for ever have to appear offline to save them from me constantly logging in and out. T*rr3nts work fine, and seem to be the most unaffected in this whole thing, I'm not entirely sure why, maybe you do?

However browsers, and page loading, downloading through browsers as of last friday seem to have added to the general internet problem. Pages don't load properly or fully, pictures and gifs half load, or don't load at all, downloading through chrome or explorer seem to load gracefully for about 7 seconds then just seem to stop dead. Firefox has been my own means of downloading anything because its downloader popout allows me to pause the download and some how...'jumpstart' it which happens and eventually after many stops and restarts the download finishes. Speed.net tests don't even load anymore, only firefox managed one and the went up to 1.5 then slowly made its way down to 0.10 without even finishing :/.

I've recently used T*rr3ts over the weekend to test the general connection of the internet and it downloaded at the usual constant rate of about 300-450kb/s which is normal....so I'm kinda stumped, I cannot seem to work out what is making my browsers so very bad at downloading or anything. Other things that seem to download as normal other than T*rr3nts, or have just been taking their time between ups and downs are: my virus software updates, malwarebytes updater, and possibly windows update too.

SO my techy friend told me to do a latency test, you know the whole cmd 'ping google.com' business. And it seemed to work out that my mins and maxs could rate from 45, 46 to 45, 160, which apparently is extremely bad. All the time getting no packets lost though. Just did a test now as I write this and I just got 44 and 188.

SO what I've done so far:

reset the router, many times. unplugged everything and plugged everything back
I've got a Dell so I've ran and internet connectivity test with dell support suite and it pass all.
disabled and enabled my wireless adapted, even unistalled it and reinstalled the driver and everything
used any helpful clean up tools to sort anything else out.

Nutshell: Everything works perfectly: router, my adapter still downloads at the normal optimal speed, but for some reason the internet through browsers seems to be almost pathetic and unable to cope.
So yeah, what's actually wrong and do I need a new wireless adapter installed?

Laptop specs:

Dell 1558
MS Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1
Intel Core i7 CPU M 620 @ 2.67ghz, 4.0GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD 5470

Wireless adapters:
Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6200 AGN
Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter
"" "" "" "" "" #2
Realtek PCIe GBE family controller (not sure if this is used for anything lol)
Any response appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Weird wireless internet activity. Any help?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I am seeing the Internet activity light blinking almost constantly on my laptop although I'm not doing any browsing or downloading. I've gone through and shut down all but system processes with no impact. I've scanned for malware, viruses, etc. and fixed what I can. This activity started after downloading and using BitTorrent. I've since removed BT. The laptop is wireless connecting via a Linksys WRTG54. I'm running Vista SP1.One additional piece of information. I released the IP connection with ICONFIG /RELEASE. The activity light continued to blink. I then ran a sniffer capture which is attached. It appears to be a problem with ARP broadcasts generating the traffic. The laptop is requesting the MAC of the WRT54G over and over. I checked the ARP cache in Vista and the WRT54G is listed as dynamic. Here is a log from HijackThis. Hi, Firstly appologies as this has already been answered but it does seem that each problem needs its own thread.

The problem
My computer is not wanting to connect to the internet, it will claim to be connected to the wireless network (occasionally showing limited or no connectivity) but it wont send or recieve packets (rate is VERY slow)

Background
I am running a HP Media Centre PC and have been doing so since easter 07. I have had it working without problems on my network at home and also at two different addresses whilst at university. Recently I noticed that I had connected to another wireless network by accident which was unsecured and when I tried to reconnect to my house network I have the problem. There are 4 other computers in my house (one of which I am on now) which haven't suffered any problems like this which leads me to believe it is a computer related problem rather than a router.

I am not massively technically minded but I am running:
Windows XP
HP Media Centre
the router is a standard BT Home Hub which has worked for the previous 7-8 months.

So far I have tried the following:
Ipconfig \all
netsh winsock reset catalog
netsh int IP reset reset.log
ping 216.109.112.135
ping yahoo.com
ping google.com -n 25

All to no avail, I have attached the results below if you can find anything out from it.

Thanks a lot

I have a Dell laptop with Win7 Ultimate 64bit at home. Sometime I could access internet via wireless. Sometime I couldn't as it shows "no internet access". The weird thing is: when I turn on my work laptop and logon, my home laptop would have internet access immediately and even then I turn off my work laptop, it still has the internet access. I have checked BIOS/Wireless Card/Router Setting, power plan policy, TCP/IP setting, update to lastest firmware and tried many ways I found from internet. No luck. That's weird.

Here is my info:
1. My home Laptop : Dell Inspiron, Win7 Ultimate 64
Tried Win7 Pro 32, Tried with different internal wireless cards, same results.
2. Modem/Router: TP-LINK 8840T modem+router, add D-LINK DI-524 as wireless AP(disabled DHCP),
WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK (w or/wo broadcast)
3. My work Laptop: HP Probook, Win7 Enterprise 64.

Any ideas are very appreciated.

For quite some time, I've been able to get wireless internet without many problems on my laptop here. That was, until Thursday night, when the browser suddenly turned up "Page cannot load". I tried repairing the connection a few times and eventually gave up for the night. I came back Friday and still wasn't working. It was connecting, but nothing worked online. I gave up and went about watching DVDs for a bit. Today, I try again and still no luck. I have an idea an go to another room and it works! So I bring in my plug, mouse, and cooling fan and hook them up. The internet promptly sputters and dies (connection still claims to be fine). Try to repair a few times and still no good. I try loading Yahoo! and then think of something while it claims to be loading. I pull out the power cord and the page loads almost instantly. It's as if the power cord is somehow causing interference as an antenna. Any thing I can do?

-I don't have access to the router if you know what I mean...
-It's an XP
-Compaq something or other Laptop
-Any other details needed?

That's about it. I tried whacking the power cord on a bed to see if I could shake out the static or anything and then realized the wires are copper and can't be a magnet when not plugged in. Thanks for the help that I hope comes soon.

I've posted this issue on other forums, but I'm posting it here as well to see if you guys could give me a hand.

I have a desktop and a laptop both connected to a wireless network which I've had working just fine for a year or so. Suddenly, I've been having issues with my internet connection dropping out intermittently.

At first I thought it was an issue with my modem since the "send" light on it goes on and off every so often. I called the cable company and they told me that there are no problems with the modem that they can see. I also tried connecting my desktop directly to the modem without going through the router and the internet on my desktop seemed to work just fine (obviously, there's no wireless internet when I connect this way, so my laptop is left without any connection). So, I don't think it's a modem problem.

It might be a problem with my router, but I'm doubting this more and more. I reset my router to factory settings and rebuilt my home wireless network, which didn't seem to work. I was told that my router could be dying, but I'm not sure of that because when I turn off my desktop computer (still connected through the router), the wireless network works on my laptop and I can use the internet on it just fine. When I turn my desktop on, however, the internet will not work on either my desktop or my laptop and I get the intermittent drop outs.

I'm not really sure why having my desktop on cause... Read more

Must be that time of the year again, as my PC is acting weird. Not sure if it is the full moon or did something creep into my system. My PC is slower than normal and has rebooted itself several times.

I am using XP Pro and McAfee Total Protection which is up to date. I did a scan using McAfee and it comes back clean. I rebooted into safe mode with networking and ran a Panda Online scan. First time it restarted in the middle of the scan. The second time it said it found stuff, but it was mostly tracking cookies.

I am attaching a HJT log and the Panda results. Suggestions?

Ok, my 1st time here, seemed like a good place for some advice.

My basic problem i'm connected to a network and it seems to be changing its security type. jumping from WPA2-PSK to WEP.

I'm using this same wifi antenna. What's weird is no other detectable network does this. my pc's network access menu only rarely shows the change from wpa2-psk to wep but I did get inSSIDer for checking this thing, and it does show its changing security types about every minute or so.

The other strange thing it would never let me connect at all with just entering the key, only by manually making a network. sometimes it shows full bars, others (like now when i'm typing) it shows a red X over the icon.

I went and checked 192.168.0.1 for any strangeness but can't find anything in there, but it is broadcasting 2 separate frequencies, 2.4 and 5 GHz at the same time. I can see that both frequencies are set to use WPA2-PSK, with the same password but different SSIDs.

The noticeable thing is when it has the red X the internet seems slower, and tends to just not let anything after the 1st few minutes of using the net.

Any ideas what's going on with this stuff? i've never seen any network do this.
And yes, i'm on neighbors wifi, and they do know i'm poking around. any help would be appreciated.

P.S. I can do screenshots if needed/appropriate.

A:Weird Wifi Activity

howdy and welcome. Whether or not the neighbor knows about your using their wifi is immaterial, as it's the ISP that makes the call as to whether or not it's legal. And ISP's do not allow that, unfortunately, so I'm going to have to close this one up.

thanks for understanding,

My laptop is fairly new (only got it 3 weeks ago), but already i have experienced a BSOD around 2 weeks ago and two crashes, both a few days apart.

Today's crash was odd though: I forced a restart when it became unresponsive (i was installing updates at the time) and as it loaded it came up with the usual safe mode suggestions, but then, after telling it to start normally, it came up with a black screen with some white text and was cycling through registry keys. It was over very quickly so I'm afraid i cannot give more details, but i remember seeing "600 items" or something similar. Is this a vista recovery operation or something more sinister? After it was done, the computer didn't continue to load up but restarted itself, at which point it loaded fine.

Anyone know what this was? Thanks.

Oh, i also checked the reliability tool but nothing reported for the 13th.

Hi. . .

Given the fact that you experienced a BSOD on a 1 week-old new laptop and now seeing the information on subsequent crashes, I would recommend that you reset the laptop back to factory condition by re-installing Vista via the recovery partition.

Usually you press an F key to invoke the recovery partition - it may be F10, F11, ctrl-F11, or the esc key. Look in your owners manual for the exact key/combination.

This will place your system back to the way it was when you turned it on for the first time.

If you have difficulties or questions, please let me know.'

have had no issue at all for a long time and all was well. Then this week I was on my pc (Windows XP) and went to shut down the pc, but when I went to Start to look for shute down it was not there and neither was the Run command. I researched online and found out it maybe called the quickinfo virus. I followed a few steps and got back the run command and shutdown button. I though all was fine but now when I go to open Adobe Photoshop CS I get and error I must have Admin rights to load program and it shuts down. I looked at user accounts and their is only one mine and it has admin rights. Also if I hit ctrl+alt+delete it says it has been diabled as I do not have admin rights.

How do I fix this issue?

Is this the name of the virus I have, or is it something else?

I pasted what I followed to get links back below just as FYI. Please help as I can not do any work. Thanks Much
Open a command prompt (CMD) from accessories menu -> type "gpedit.msc" expand the user configuration node -> expand admin templates -> click "Start Menu and Taskbar -> int he right pane look for "remove run menu from start menu from start menu" it should be set to "not configured" if it is double click it set to enable, click apply, then set to disable and click apply. if it's set to enabled then set to disable. Reboot and see if run's back on the start menu.

Hello and welcome to BleepingComputer! I am Elle and I will be helping you out with your problem. Firstly, you should know that we are working with specific tools which are used to identify the possible threats present on your system so I will analyze the results they produce. As a start we need to have some more up-to-date logs than the ones you have already provided. The current state of the files on your system might have changed so we need to get a clear look on that aspect. DO NOT bring any changes to the system except the ones I tell you to as that may produce more damage than helping us. If you will encounter a delay of over 2 days from me, please don't hesitate and private message me (link in the signature). Do not forget to check your topic periodically and subscribe to it so that you can receive notifications regarding my replies. Please generate another DDS log (download it from http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.com'>here if you haven't already) and post it in your next reply along with other changes that may have occured since you last posted. Also download and run GMER from this link: GMER download link.Thank you very much for your patience. Hello All,

I have a weird activity going on with my HP laptop. The laptop is a custom DV3. Here are the specs:

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit (upgraded in place from Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit)
Intel Core 2 Duo P7550 @ 2.26 GHz
BIOS version: F.12
4GB DDR3 ram
NVidia Geforce G 105M w/ 512MB dedicated video ram
HDD: WDC WD2500BEKT-60F3T1
I have been noticing that my computer has been slow lately and that every time I restart, Win7 starts the chkdsk command at boot. The abnormal thing is that it hangs at the end of the "hit any button to skip check" countdown. The other issue that I have is that under Disk Defrag, my C: drive does not show up. I believe that this is due to the "dirty bit" being active on the C: drive.

I have tried to do the commands listed on this page: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-xp/465184-volume-dirty.html
and unfortunately I am in the same position. I do not want to let this issue run rampant and I feel that I am at a stand still with it.

Any help or advice would be awesome. I am hoping I do not have to format to fix this issue.

So I keep getting this thing that's trying to download something on my computer. There are multiple instances of mshta.exe that show up on task manager, and after having a look with Process Explorer, the same url that's trying to connect to my computer is in the command line of these mshta.exe's. Also, when using Mozilla Firefox, it can't connect to sites like this and won't even open. I also get random tabs opening in Firefox.
Any help?

Hey all,

So I've been having this problem where my computer is constantly laggy and I noticed that my computer tower is constantly "loading". I'm not sure if thats the correct term but the yellow light that shows processing activity is constantly blinking and you can always hear certain sounds coming from it, even if I'm doing nothing at all. Even at startup, I will constantly get clicking sounds from the tower and I noticed that a disk boot sound comes on once after I login to my user name. This had never happened before, and usually only get a disk boot sound directly after turning on the computer or when scanning for viruses. I dont know if its a virus or just a system problem but I remember getting viruses which will constantly cause activity the computer.

This started when my virus scanner McAfee expired. I uninstalled it and installed Trendmicro. I had to uninstall Spybot and Malwarebytes prior to installing Trendmicro but reinstalled it after. I also installed AV antivirus because I thought it was similar to Spybot and Malwarebytes where it would be like a secondary program I can use as backup. But when I installed AV, it started automatically and interefered with my Trendmicro and I had to do a bunch of things to uninstall it or disable it. On Trendmicros first scan, it found one virus, Malwarebytes found nothing and Spybot found a couple things. I had not run Spybot in a while though, but usually only get cookies. This time it found cookies but also ... Read more

A:Computer acting weird, slow and constant activity

Hello and welcome.

I think the issues stem from remnants of multiple antivirus programs.

For AVG

After uninstalling AVG from the Control Panel, also run the AVG remover from their site.

AVG - Download tools

direct link to the AVG Remover:

http://download.avg.com/filedir/util..._2011_1184.exe

For McAfee

Download the McAfee Removal Tool
http://download.mcafee.com/products/...tches/MCPR.exe

Double click on MCPR.exe to launch it, then Click Run. A window should appear and disappear, this is normal. A new window should popup and begin the uninstall. When prompted to reboot your computer type Y

After running both tools, post new DDS logs.

When I first start up my pc, whenever I open a folder with files in it, if I haven't opened that folder since it was shut down, my hard drive starts accessing and my mouse pointer turns into the little circle while it's waiting for something to finish. At that point I can't do much of anything until it's finished, which takes around half a minute or so usually. It happens with a folder with media files in it, and even just text files. What could be causing this? It's very annoying. Could it be my antivirus (Avira)? Is Windows doing this? Could I have some setting enabled in Windows that causes this to happen? Once the folder is opened and it stops whatever it was doing, it won't happen again until I shut off the pc and open that folder again. It seems something is scanning the files in the folders when I open them.

Hi,

My dell laptop has been doing weird things lately. The mouse moves and clicks all on it's own. I tried uninstalling the driver and reinstalling it but now it doesn't always recognize when I touch the mouse pad and it still moves around the screen voluntarily. Also my windows update install all updates that were down loaded except for these: 'Update for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 (KB842773)'. Additionally my norton live update installation doesn't completely install all downloads either.

I have scanned for viruses and nothing so this is my next stop.

Here is my hijackthis log file, please help me... this wondering mouse is driving me up the wall.

Ok. Heres the sitch.

I have about 9 or 10 different users who all are using those generic MS wireless kb/m setup. Unfortunety as you can imagine, with all those signals broadcasting, each mouse is picking up the movement for a different person. havok is breaking lose in the building.
I managed to get a few of them taken care of with wired setups, but a few users for some reason really enjoy the wireless "feel".

Is there something i can do to limit the amount of "crosstalk" that the receivers are getting? I've purchased a few different setups for a few of the users and that seems to work, but there is only so many different kb/m vendors i can go with and i dont really like having 30 different setups on site.

Anyone have any tips?

I have an IBM thinkpad that runs XP. It recently got a slew of trojans, but they weren't causing a whole lot of trouble. I decided to do what I could to get rid of them and after consulting friends who know computers, I did the following. I updated AVG and turned off system restore and rebooted my computer in safe mode. I ran AVG and it detected somethings and deleted them. I rebooted in regular mode and then I realized that I couldn't get online. It says I'm connected and that I have great connectivity, but nothing will connect, and there is little to no activity. Hardly any packets being sent or recieved. What is further puzzling is that I tried to install another wiresless thing that I was using on my desktop... same problem. ANd then I did a direct ethernet connection and the problem is still the same! Other than that problem, everything is fine on it. Is my computer salvageable?

Hi, I have a Dell Inspiron 600m with the internal wireless (Intel miniPCI 1300) network card. It is at the 802.11(b) level, as is my wireless router (a Netgear). Mysteriously, the network performance got slow maybe 6 or 9 months ago. The network always shows "Excellent" signal strength, and the system connects effortlessly, so I assumed I had a browser problem. The problem I see is that the traffic just stalls. The browser doesn't actually hang, it just says "web site found, waiting for reply" and stays in that state for a long time. Usually, after a few minutes, it kicks into gear and the page in question loads rather quickly. Another typical symptom comes about when I try to watch a YouTube video. Once viewing a video, I will see the progress that the video is downloading, but then it will stop. I can watch the video up to that point, then it just stops when it reaches the end of what was downloaded. I can "tickle" it into doing more by backing up the slider. It may then download a little bit more of the video, but it won't keep going and just download it to the end. Steps I have taken to resolve:I have taken Internet Explorer down to no plug-ins or added featuresSwitched to Firefox (still thinking I had a browser problem, not a connectivity problem); but the behavior was the sameUpdated the driver for the miniPCI card from Intel...but nothing seems to have changed this behavior. Again, it doesn't seem to be a browser thing as I ca... Read more

A:Wireless network connection strong, but actual download activity stalls

Hi .

Well...I would try a wired connection for a limited time...just to see where the problem might not be.

Connectivity problems can be hardware....can be software. One or the other needs to be eliminated or all that will take place is random guessing.

I resort to that only when reasoning fails me.

QUESTION

My Vista Home Prem 32-bit (just clean-installed) is showing a processor-halt blue screen under the following, always reproducible conditions:
A bittorrent client---Vuze or uTorrent, it occurs on both---running its torrents "wide open" (no limitation on max bandwidth)
it only occurs on the wireless adapter (Intel WiFi Link 4965AGN), not the ethernet adapter (Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller): if I ran the torrents on the ethernet, I could be happy as the proverbial clam (but I can't...I need the wireless)
it does not happen if the applications are open, but all torrents (bandwidth) shut down: I leave Vuze open for hours, and it does not happen
network/bandwidth activity with other network-using applications (Firefox/IE audio/video streaming in Flash or WMP plugins, and often in HD) runs normally
this was not happening until only a few months ago: first uTorrent, then (the switch to) Vuze...both clients were running without problems, for almost two years
other than IE, FF, Windows Update in the class of Internet-using/connecting software, there is no other software of this class installed. The processor halt happens when FF and IE are closed.
the processor halt reports PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGE_AREA with no identifying faulting file/system object

In the background below, I go through an exhaustive list of things tried/solutions attempted, as well as the history of the 2.5-year old notebook and its operating system use.

Also, there is actually two other IP adresses that this mysterious activity uses. I don't have them to paste right now but i will later. And the above c/p is one of 200+ logged activities of this type!

If this is an "UP and UP" activity( as compared to someone hacking into my machine I don't know either way that is why I'm asking?) of an HP machine why is it an HP acivity at all?

Is it possible to track where someone has been on the Internet even if they have cleared their cache folder, cookies, temp folder, and history? This is assuming that person could be using IE, Netscape, Firefox which is connected to a network.

Thanks for any feedback.

I'm running XP home and have a DSL connection running through a protected wireless connection. As soon as I turn on the laptop, internet activity starts and runs nonstop unless I disable my wireless connection. If I click on the connection status several thousand packets are being sent and recieved. How can I find out where this internet activity is coming from and disable it?

Hi. I run ad-adware SE and norton all the time. I don't file share or visit any adult sites. I block pop-ups and do not accept cookies. When I start up the cpu, it takes a long time. I delete my cookies in internet settings and I run ad-adware almost everyday. How else can I access what cookies or things my cpu might be trying to load up when starting up. It runs slower than usual also when using the cpu. Also how do I post my hijack this log? Any help would be appreciated so I can get my cpu running like normal again. Thanks.

I first noticed this issue on a secondary computer of mine last week. Maybe half the time I was trying to connect to a webpage, I would receive a time-out error ("Page Load Error" in Firefox). I then noticed on my router that there was internet activity on that machine, even when all applications were closed (and the connectivity issues existed on other machines sharing the same router/DSL connection. like on my primary computer, when I turned on the secondary computer, I would get the page load errors half the time even on the primary computer, but they went away if I unplugged the secondary computer's internet cable). I first updated spyware blaster, then ran spybot, which found 3 issues "Zlob.Downloader" at system32/crypts.dll "Win32Exchanger.ch" at system32/CbEvtSvc.exe and in the registry and "Win32.Injecter.adv" in the registry. I then ran ad-aware which found "WIN32.TROJANDROPPER" at LocalService\Application Data\638097440.exe and \Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\UAZHWDRL\ftp[1].exe and at a restore point, "FAKEALERT" at system32\config\systemprofile\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop.htt "WIN32.TROJAN.AGENT" at system32\n.ini, Program Files\Internet Explorer\setupapi.dll, in the registry, and at a restore point. However, the issue still existed after both these programs ran and completed. Thank you for your time and consideration. Two questions, since the internet connection w... Read more

I have had a small icon in my task tray that shows up-traffic and down-traffic from the internet. Somehow, it has disappeared. How do I restore it? (I knew how once, but have forgotten how.)

A:Internet Activity Icon

octogenarian, Start>Control Panel then open "Network Connections". Right click your connection, choose "Properties" and under the "General" tab checkmark "Show icon in notification area when connected", click OK. If it's already checkmarked uncheck it click OK then checkmark it and click OK.

I'd like to know if there is a way to tell if my computer/internet activity is being tracked by my boss. Is there something I can download that will prevent this from happening?
