"Windows Media Player cannot play this file.  The player might  not support this file type or support the codec  tat was used to compress the file"
Here is what I tried"
1. Went to Microsoft help website and found nothing very confusing
2 Tried opening with VLC still would not open
3.. Tried Phot.o Shop
4.Tried adobe Premier Pro - nothing
5.  Unable to  download GOM
7  Tried a video converter softeware but  complicated for me
8. Now I am here
I am using windows 7 on a 5year old laptop that does need to be replaced.
If there is anyway to save these videos my work will not be in vain
Thank You Everyone

Preferred Solution: Microsoft Media Player won't Recognize my downloaded MP4 Video

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Microsoft Media Player won't Recognize my downloaded MP4 Video

For saving the videos on sites I would suggest Internet Download Manager. Directly type internetdownloadmanager.com in your browser or download from filehippo.
The initial days of usage will be difficult though as it tries to grab everything on the page for download.
Adding custom filters take time, of course.
But once you are set it will be very easy.
Also Update your codecs. I prefer and suggest K-Lite Mega Codec Pack.
Hope this should fix your problem.

Hello. Today I downloaded a video that had been converted online into WMV, and when I played it in the Media Player, it wasn't what I wanted, so I deleted it from its source file. However, now it's staying listed in that Now Playing List to the right of the main Library, and sometimes, when I go to open the player, I can't even get it onto the Library screen in the first place because it freezes up trying to load the first Now Playing video screen, with that darn video. And I managed to righ-click it in the Now Playing list and click Remove from List, and it was gone, but I opened it other times after and it's still there! I'm not certain that it is the cause of the freezing, but it may be.

Recently, I have come across several pieces of software that say they require media player 9 to work. 1 was even microsofts news clips on the msn in web site. Another is a learnkey learning disk. I have media player 10, but for some reason, the software on both ends won't work. When I go to install 9, it tells me a greater version is already installed, and it won't let me go to 9, however the software continually tells me that I need 9. Any advice appreciated.

My windows media player is no longer recognizing my mp3 player when pluged into the usb ports on my pc.

I have tried to delete and reinstall media player but my pc will not allow me to do this, is there a good uninstall program available to help me do this or some other way to remove it.

I would also like some opinions on alternative programs that would be good for managing my music and adding and deleting songs on my mp3 player.

Thanks any info will be greatly appreciated.

I can't help you with WMP -- I never use it.

What brand and model MP3 player do you have? Is it a simple MP3 player or does it support video playback, DRM, etc. All this info will help point you toward some alternative management options.

I have been able to download and play music through musicmatch up through the end of May. The last month when I try to download music I get a error message: "An eror occurred while trying to license your Musicmatch download. The Musicmatch License Server cannot process the request." I can play music in my library from CDs that I have copied. When I try to play music that I downloaded (and was able to play successfully before) it plays for 28 seconds then I get "error c00d271d". I have had Norton try to help me bhinking it was a problem with my internet security and antivisus but apparently it is not. SI don't think it's a problem with Musicmatch because we have it on our laptop and there is no problem. When I try to play the downloads on Window Media Player 10 I get an orange "!" and it won't play at all. I have SP1 and haven't added any new programs. I've gone in and tried to adjust various settings (I've probably messed some other things up.)

A:cannot play downloaded music on musicmatch or windows media player

Illegally downloaded music will not recieve support here.

Whenever I insert CD's or DVD's into either of my optical drives, Windows Media Player as well as My Computer recognize that media had been added. The problem is, when I eject the media (whether it's pushing the eject button on the drive or right clicking as selecting eject) My computer as well as WMP fail to recognize that the media has been removed. If I insert a new cd or dvd, both my computer as well as WMP see it as the original piece of media. The other strange thing is iTunes is able to accurately determine if there is media in a drive or not.

Any idea's as to what is going on with my drives? I'm pretty sure it's just a software issue with Vista or WMP, since iTunes doesn't seem to be affected. I have no idea on how to resolve this. Thanks in advance for any help

Just a quick update with things that I've tried. First I checked for errors on the C drive to see if a file or something was corrupt. After that didn't work, I uninstalled and reinstalled the drives, again to no avail.

Hello, I'm not pc savy as most of you probably are, thus why I'm here seeking your expert advice. For some reason media player12 is not working. It fails to read any type of discs. My store bought cds or dvds. Nothing will play. It was working fine as I was able to burn a cd from my music files but now no longer works at all. I recently had the mother board replaced and main power source as well. Not sure if this has anything to do with it or not. All settings I went through and think they are correct but not entirely sure. All drivers come back as working and windows claims all is up to date. If anyone could assist me with this issue I'd be very grateful! Please however try to make the instructions as simple as possible as i'm not too familiar with pc terminolgy yet, lol. Much thanks in advance

I have a relatively new system with 1GHz Athlon, 256 SDRam, Running WinMe. I was having trouble with running any ScanDisk (including antivirus). Did a system restore and everything is working fine, except MediaPlayer or any other related softwares like RealPlayer. If I try to open a player, the player locks up. If I open "mediaplayer2.exe" and then try to open a *.cda file, it tells me that it needs a plug-in to run this file, although when I try to get the plug-in, it still won't work. I'm hoping to find a fix before I send this in to the Mfg for repair. I have also tried completely deleting MediaPlayer and then downloading and re-installing the same version and also deleting and installing 7.1 to no avail. Hello Duga, sorry you're having problems. I just researched that error code and this is what I got.

Windows Media Player cannot play the file. You might encounter this error message for one of the following reasons:
Your computer is not connected to the local area network (LAN) or to the Internet. Connect to the network or Internet, and then try again.

- unlowded other videos from the same source and they reprodiced with sound.
- downloaded again the same video and again there is no sound.

What do you suggest me to do?

Can you download other YouTube videos in Real Player and have them play sound? Update Real Player to the latest version.
If that is the only video causing a problem, then it would be the video that is the problem, not your computer.

I have some small MP3 files 47-48KB I want to have at the very begining of Windows media player 9 playlists and to burn cda from them.

The problem is when I tell WMP to find MP3 files in the directory,
it finds everything but these small files. I had the same problem last summer, and ignored it. At this time I am unable to burn the CD with all the identifying information I wish to have in it because they aren't there

Is this something I have to live with? Is there a setting somewhere I can
check to allow it to see them?

Pobably no way of getting MS attention to it?

Can anyone give me an idea what to tweak?

Thank you in adavce

When going to browse, click the small arrow going down on the right of where it says "files of type" and click it, go down to where it says All Files and the file should appear, I had the same problem last week.

Windows XP File Explorer won't recognize CD-ROM or DVD discs w/o Win Media Player

I don't know what caused this, but all of a sudden if I want to browse the files of a CD, whether it be music or program files, in my CDRW or DVD drive using Windows Explorer I get an error message of "Incorrect Function" or "Insert Disc" for the DVD Drive and for the CDRW drive there is no message, but no files appear. If I open Windows Media Player, however, I can then view the files in Windows Explorer. Also, if I open NERO or Roxio Burning applications first, I can view these files in Windows Explorer. I have not made any recent changes in my PC except adding Itunes, Napster and Music Match. I have uninstalled all three apps, but the problem still persists. Anyone know what is causing this and/or how to fix it? It seems like the drives aren't bein initialized or something unless one of these apps is launched. As a workaround I have set up WMP to run minimized at start-up. My concern is that If I ever have to re-install XP, would the drive recognize the XP Recovery CD.

Thanks in advance.

i use vista 64-bit and the media player that came with it plus a codec package from windows. for the past 2 years i have been very happy with it with no problems what so ever. however now, without downloading any patches, my media player has decided it won't play certain videos.

i have some music videos and some films that i have downloaded and they still play just fine. but the ones i have ripped with DVD Fab (i own them btw) have since stopped working properly. they play audio but there is no video. when i play in full screen, instead of getting black like before, i get the same visualisations as if i was viewing an mp3 (the vortex/battery thing)

i downloaded the K-lite codec package thinking it may be that. nothing happened.
i have also noticed that when i view a movie/video, even though i can close the media player [X], it still playing. i can hear it. when i re-open it, its still playing as if i just minimised it.
so i don't know what to do.
(could my G15 keyboard be keeping the file running in the background somehow)

i am not in favour of a 'roll back' (system restore) because i don't know when it started. (not to mention the loss in data)
and for those who don't know. the vista media player is apart of the program. it can't be uninstalled nor re-installed without re-installing all of vista again.
not a pleasant thought.

thanks for any help you can give me

Greeting Zephead, and Welcome to TSF.

Please try these steps in order....

Right click on the Volume Control in the System Tray [near the clock]..If you don't have the Volume Control icon in the taskbar, do this..
Go Control Panel > Sound and Audio Devices > tick the box 'Place Volume icon in the taskbar' > Apply > OK.
Now: Open Volume Control > Options > Properties > Playback > scroll down and make sure that all of the following are ticked: Volume Control; Wave; SW Synth; Front; CD Player; Line-In; and, 'microphone'. Now click Recording, and tick the following: Stereo Mix; CD Player; Line-In ; Microphone. Now click Playback again > OK.
Back to Options > Advanced > there should now be an 'Advanced button on the Microphone, click it > tick the box ' 1 Mic Boost' Close, and exit out of Volume Control.

Now right click on the System Tray Icon again > Adjust Audio Properties > at the bottom next to Speaker Volume, click Advanced and set the type of speakers you have from the drop down box > OK. Now click on Speaker Volume and make sure that the volume is not turned down >OK.

Now go Voice > Test Hardware, and the Test wizard will run you through a test to see that everything is [hopefully] working, and when your done > OK >OK.

As I said hopefully you should now have sound, but if not post back and we'll scratch our heads again.

While Windows Media Player always had its flaws, I simply can't understand why would Microsoft make it worse with each version. WMP10 was a very decent player, at least for music because WMP has never been good for video. Then version 11 changed some things in the GUI I didn't like too much, but it was still OK. But WMP12 is total garbage!! In previous version you had a "hue" slider that you could use to make the player any color you wanted. In WMP12 that slider doesn't exist, and even worse, when in library mode we are stuck with a horrendous baby blue color all over the interface, that to this day I don't know how to change even with a resource hack. I don't get how can this hideous thing come from the same company that creates such a beautiful visual interface in Windows Media Center. If anybody knows how to change the background in library mode I beg you, please post and let me know how. Other thing missing? The Advanced Tag Editor. A very useful feature that every single music player that dares call itself that must have. Who the ____ at Microsoft came up with the idea to remove the Advanced Tag Editor, and who the ____ approved that decision? They should be fired. I will stop using this player mainly because of this reason. I used WMP11 to transfer albums to my MP3 player because when I use Winamp it transfers the files in the wrong order. But in WMP11 I just had to right click on an album cover and selet "Add to sync list", or "Add to burn li... Read more

We all know of it, we all hardly use it in deference to itunes, VLC, and the sorts. But should it remain with us?

I was thinking about this feature that is just sucky. I never use it other than to play media files, and I never use the navigation of it because it's just terrible. It also looks terrible.

Then I wondered about the future of Windows Media Center and the dying Zune Software. What about consolidating media players into a commanding, Windows Media CENTER, center as in, an actual CENTER of media playing and not just one of many media playing programs that is used.

Think of it, all the features of all players come together in one, awesome player. The modern, immersive, metro design of Zune and Zune Marketplace, the DVR feature of WMC and integration with Xbox, and the lightweightness of WMP together. That way, we don't need to have so many players in one OS. And of course, it could get the same codec treatment as VLC or a potential addon codec treatment if the user needs such. It could have better device media management as well.

Also, if Microsoft could without apple suing them, they could pull a middle finger on them and have ipods and iphones being able to sync up and be able to be managed without itunes. Windows Media Center could also have access to the current Zune Marketplace and have the same subscription service applied to iDevices and Windows Phones and other digital players. One awesome, media player.

What do you guys think?

A:Should Microsoft kill off Windows Media Player

I personally say yes as I almost never touch it. But as an adjunct to an OS, it should be there I think. I also see most friends use it widely..

Media Center & Media Player 11 recently would not play a DVD. Computer locked up in Media Center on insertion of DVD. wmvs, mpgs and audio files played fine, however, a couple of days later a DVD began playing, with no changes made by me, but without sound. This is now the same problem with wmvs, mpg, and all audio files. Picture is fine but with no sound. Tried system restore but there was nothing to restore.

I haven't seen any posts that deal with this.

When playing a video in media player, I get horrible lag between video and audio. On a 30min video, the audio is usually done 3 or 4min before the the vid. The funny thing is, that before i upgraded my memory for 500mb to 1 GB(I'm now at 2GB), I didn't have this problem at all.

Any thoughts on the cause?

I am running windows XPSP3 with windows media player 11. For some reason I cannot play wmv or avi files. I get the audio but no video. This is true for any media player that I have tried. I have re installed both the media player and windows to no avail. I have checked the codecs and seem to have the most common ones (see below) I ran GSpot on one of the files and it said that I had the proper codec, yet it still won't play. I am sure it is a setting problem of some sort , but don't know where. Can you give me any help?

Win 7 pro media player opens with a DVD with the correct frame (skin?), plays sound, clock runs but no video. Suggestions?

A:No video with media player

What is different since it played? Have you made any changes to codecs? Do media files that used to play still play? Are these new files, incomplete files, or different in any way?
