Solved: replacing a touch screen on a gateway desktop

Q: Solved: replacing a touch screen on a gateway desktop

Help! I bought a gateway touch screen computer for my daughter a month ago, for 563 at best buy. Our cats knocked it off the desk and broke the screen so I called geek squad and they said it costs 800 to fix it! This can't be right! He said the screen was around 600 and the rest was labor. How could they have sold it for 563 if the screen alone costs 600? I watch shark tank and know that normally things sell for at least twice what it costs to make so that can't be right. And who would ever wanna buy one knowing this? My question is ---- does anyone know where I can get this repaired for less? There must be someone out there somewhere that can do it for 2 or 3 hundred. I can't buy a brand new one, I don't have that much money. Please help.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The laptop has vertical lines of dead pixels running across the screen and I want to get the LCD replaced. Now the non touch screen model of this laptop has a Full HD variant (1920x1080) as opposed to the standard 1366x768 WXGA HD display while the touch models only come with the WXGA HD LCDs. Can I replace the LCD of my touch screen model with the FHD one? I have been able to detach the digitiser from the LCD itself and have the hinges and screws so I would assume it would be a simple case of changing one LCD with the other. The replacement touch screen models all come with the digitizer and hinges attached which is not something I require so it would be easier (and cheaper!) if I only got the LCD replaced. Lastly, if this is possible, do I need to purchase any additional cables? If so, which one? Thanks in advance.

A:Replacing Dell 15R 5537 Touch screen LCD with FHD non touch LCD

You're going to need at least the FHD wiring harness:
the screen
and the bezel
You may or may not be able to re-use the back cover/hinge assembly - usually these are different between non-touch and touch versions.

Hi all!

I tried searching the forum here but I'm a little confused by the different advice so I decided to start my own thread (I hope that is ok).

For starters, I am no computer genius but can read & follow directions so no problem providing whatever info you may need.

I have a Gateway DX4870-UB20P, purchased in Sept 2012, all oem, no upgrades or anything different than what came installed, with a Seagate ST1000DM003-9YN162 HD; 64-bit with Windows 7 Home Premium, Intel Core i3-2120 CPU

It's been working ok, no major problems until yesterday when it refused to boot into windows. After many hours of messing around with it, I finally got back into Windows. But for a recap, the basic problem was this:

Turn on PC at power button, get the usual "beep"

Gateway screen comes up that says press del for bios F12 for advanced (or something like that)

Windows screen comes up: black background with the 4-color pattern and that little bar running across the bottom that says starting windows

After about 10-15 seconds, the screen goes black, and a little message at the top says "reboot and select proper device" (not 100% certain what it says because it only lasts for a second)

Then it restarts with the "beep" goes back to the gateway screen with the del/F12 options and another screen pops up that gives me two options:
Start windows normally
Start windows repair (recommended)

Neither option was getting me anywhere so after searching online with... Read more

Windows 10. I replaced the LCD screen/bezel assembly and the touch screen functionality isn't working. The screen works fine otherwise. I checked all of the cable connections and made sure they are seated firm and secure. I confirmed that the driver for the touch screen sensor is the most current one. I tried it with tablet mode enabled and disabled. Any help is greatly appreciated! THANKS!

Black screen after replacing the case. I apologize in advance for my bad English. After replacing the case (inside nothing changed), the laptop shows a black screen. When connecting an external monitor, there is also no image. I checked all the contacts - everything is connected correctly. In this case, the laptop does not boot into windows (there is no reaction to the capslock, there is no lenovo logo), although the cooler starts, all the indicators are lit. When connecting or disconnecting the power adapter, the laptop issues beep, I can not understand what the problem may be. I will be grateful for any help.

Check the Touch funtionality in OKR environment.
Turn off the computer and Turn it back on and right away start tapping F2.

If the touchscreen works in OKR Environment, I suggest you perform a One key recovery (expect dataloss).

Hello guys,So I have a Lenovo IdeaPad Z400 touch that recently fell from a table and the laptop itself looks physically OK and has no dents or cracks at all, even the glass touchscreen is ok but the top part of the LCD inside appears to be cracked as there are lines and black cracks on my screen. I recently took the laptop to a Lenovo service center and they told me that they had to change both the LCD and the touch screen module (or digitizer as i have heard) as they come in a package, this costs around $300 and is not worth it since my laptop would cost around the same if sold secondhand. My question is whether there is a way to change just the LCD without changing the touch screen module as it works perfectly fine. After taking my laptop to a technician outside of Lenovo, he claims that seperating the touchscreen module from the LCD would almost always result in the touch screen cracking so it would be unusable, is this true or is it possible to keep the old touch screen module and change just the LCD? Thanks in advance

I was given a Gateway GM5066E to try to fix. I first removed the case door and blew out the dust. I then reseated the memory sticks and power and data cables to the hard drive and motherboard. I noticed that the hard drive had power supplies connected to it for SATA and PATA. I disconnected the power cable for the PATA. I attempted to boot the computer up, but it only beeped three times and stayed where it was at. I narrowed the problem down to two of the four memory sticks were incompatible with the other two. I removed the two 512 MB Samsung sticks leaving two 1GB Kingston sticks and then tried to reboot again. Once again three beeps and freeze. I then discovered that one of the 1GB memory sticks was bad. I removed the bad one. I then removed the battery and reset the BIOS and CMOS by moving the BIOS jumper to the 2 & 3 pins. I rebooted the computer which came up to the BIOS setup screen. I cleared any passwords and made sure that it was setup to boot first to the CD/DVD Rom. I saved changes and exited I then moved the BIOS jumper back to the 1 & 2 pins. I tried a restart only to watch the monitor stay on the "NO PC signal" black screen for 30 seconds or more. After that the screen went black. After a minute or so I hit the "ENTER" key. The screen then went to the green Gateway screen. The mouse would move around the screen normally, but I could not get to any other screen. The hard drive activity LED was flashing like it was loading up programs.... Read more

Welcome to TSG!!

With all drives disconnected and any cards besides the video card (unless video is onboard) removed, power up and observe. It should go through the POST (or maybe the Gateway splash screen blocks it out), then attempt to boot. With no boot devices available, it should let you know that, and prompt something like <F1> to retry or <F2> to enter Setup.

I have an HP all-in-one TouchSmart 320 PC, that is about 4 years old. About a month ago we went to turn it on and nothing happened. Originally, we thought it was the power source as the power supply box green light was flashing. We have tried 3 different cords and still nothing. Can anyone tell us what is going on? I do remember that before we tried to turn it on about a week prior to that I had shut down the computer, but it had updates so it was doing that but I never paid attention how it shut off, whether expected or unexpectedly. Can anyone help?!?

I've been working on my son's laptop (Gateway W730-K8X). It's running XP Media Center on a 64 bit Athlon processor. The current installed ram is 1gb.

There were 2 major problem areas- extensive virus infections, including rootkits, and a very badly fragmented drive. When I started on it, the unit wouldn't fully boot, but simply blue screened and rebooted. I have worked with it for about 3 weeks, and now it is clean and I have performed updates on the OS. The remaining issue is that the computer boots to the login screen (with startup music) and hangs for about 30 secs. It then continues to the desktop, with only the background, icons and taskbar visible. It takes an additional 2.5 minutes for explorer and other taskbar program icons to appear, and to have any exporer related functions (IE, file manager, discs, etc.).
Once these are running, everything works as normal- no crashes, halts or system errors.

I realize all this is fairly generic; any logs or system diagnostics you need I will supply if you instruct me as to what you might need.

Thanks in advance

I was walking through Best Buy the other day and noticed somthing that I havnt seen before or paid much attention to so if this is somthing that has been discussed before then pardon me.
HP has a few systems out that ship with touch screen monitors.

Do you think that this is somthing that can become a norm in desktop computing ? I personally think that it is cool, but as far as functuality goes there is really not a point. The monitors that I played with where really kind of had a touchy touch interface and it really didnt seem as I could do anything faster with my finger on the screen than I could do with a mouse. In my opinion, mouse control was probably twice as fast.

The only real application that I could see a touch desktop monitor used for is hands on applications for children such as paint and a few games designed around the concept or for somone that has a disability that does not let them grip a mouse functionally.

Touch panals do have their place in industry as it makes very quick work for bar tenders to select a inventoried item or any retailer/resturant for that matter or for such things as time clocks at factories so I am for it in that aspect.

I guess I just wanted some views and insight on what everyone thinks of this new concept to desktop computing and what pros and uses you can come up with.

A:Touch Screen Desktop Monitors A Good Idea?

In the EPOS industry touch screens are standard and work best as they eliminate the keyboard which is a weak point in security, as users like to press buttons and those who are savvy can use the keyboard to do things that we as a supplier dont want them to do.

As for home use i cant see the practicality of them, no left click to start with, like you said unless someone builds a program designed and workable for a touch screen then its a no starter.

I've been having troubles with my computer recently, and decided it was my graphics card. I went and purchased a new one and got a new power supply to go with it. I put my new hardware in, and turned on my computer but it a gets stuck on my Gateway screen. It says to press either F4 or F12 for BIOS or Boot options. Pressing either doesn't work. The only way I can get my computer to boot is to hit esp as soon as I power on my computer, it'll load into the "American Megatrends" screen for about 1 minute and then windows will boot. If I press f4 or f12 fast enough it will say it's loading them but switches into a black screen with the white underscore. (Side note, I run dual monitor and it switches monitors for this. From my HDMI to my DVI)I'm not sure if it's just booting into the wrong thing? Or if maybe something wasn't quite plugged in right? My computer is about 4 years old and now when you first turn it on it makes a very loud noise that eventually goes away but is getting worse, it appears the power supply is failing or at least thats what ive read in regards to the symptoms.
The power supply is a Newton Power Ltd. 200 watt, model mps200pb. I was at Best Buy today looking at the power supplies but they appear different and all are 250 watts or better. The model i have now i believe is listed as a fan on model with the fan pointing down and mounted externally. Will the standard power supplies work with my unit. I was trying to get one locally rather than having to wait for mail order. Also the unit i have has always been rather loud, not like now but your definatley aware its running, which it seem to do most of the time, Are the newer units quiter. Thanks for any advice.

A:Replacing Power Supply for Gateway Performance 1000

Unfortunately for you, I would guess that you will have to buy your power supply from Gateway. These proprietary units just don't fit what they usually sell in stores at a much cheaper price. It is called, get out your money, because Gateway will charge you and arm and a leg for one. Other supplies like you are looking at just won't fit your case as a rule.

That being said, why not look closer and see if you can get a can of AIR and blow the dust out of the fan in your power supply. Some times, the problem you describe is simply a vast dust build up on the fan blades and can be solved by blowing and cleaning the dust out. I would try that first and while you are at it, blow the dust out of the rest of your computer at the same time.

Hello everyone,  I bought my U530 Touch in 2014 and since last year some keys hasn't been working well. I checked the HMM Page 62 and bought a new keyboard using the same specs (90204088/90204089), but now come the issue, how to replace that!? There's no direction in the HMM file and any other information on internet. I've just opened my laptop and I guess there are two possible ways to remove the keyboard: u5301 - There are few plastic "brackets" (like showed with red circles) where the keyboard is placed, the keyboard is bellow of this piece of metal.2 - I could see a little space between the outside aluminium case and the inside plastic case, and also it seems to have some plastic fittings (like showed with the red rectangle), but it looks like hard to take off and could brake both cases (internal and external). Anyone have already replaced that?If need any other information let me know. Thanks!

Those black circles are screw covers. Take a pointed object, sharp knife or something and pry the covers off. You will find 2 small philips screws under the covers. Hi ~
I feel like I'm going in circles as I've spent so much time on the phone with tech support with both Belkin and Apple and I am no further ahead!! They each think its the others problem! So I am really hoping someone can help!

My son just purchased an ipod touch and so we bought a Belkin Wireless Router F5D7230. I set it up and he tried his ipod and had connection so we thought all was fine...however we hadn't tried our home computer. When I did, we did not have connection. I contacted Belkin who had me add DSN Server Addresses. The problem seemed solved! I had connection with my home computer! BUT I did not have my son check connection on the ipod as I figured he'd soon let me know if there was a problem! Sure enough the next day, he told me he had no connection. I called Belkin again and the guy had me check a few things but basically said everything was fine with the router and that I needed to contact Apple. I did this and they had me reset the ipod. I did this but still nothing. Unfortunately I could not stay on the phone any longer as it had been over 2hrs with both techs and I have 4 kids....!

So I am sitting here with a very expensive little toy that's not working and a very frustrated son who wants to be able to get to the internet on his ipod!

If there is anyone out there who might be able to help me, I would really appreciate it!!

Thank you,

Greeting all... This afternoon one of the folks in my IT department did me a favor and installed a new battery in my IdeaPad P500 Touch.  Everything seems to be working well with sole exception that my backlit keyboard is no longer backlit, nor does it respond when I use Funtion+Spacebar. Is there another way to toggle turn the keyboard light on and off other than Function+Spacebar?  Does anyone know how I can fix it? Thanks!

A:INSPIRON 20 -3043 hdmi input from Inspiron 3647 desktop and touch screen

So this is your setup?Inspiron Desktop 3647 HDMI out port --> HDMI to HDMI cable --> Inspiron 20-3043 HDMI in portAnd the Inspiron Desktop 3647 windows desktop is now shown on the Inspiron 20-3043 screen. But, touch is only resident in the operating system on the Inspiron 20-3043, not the operating system in the Inspiron Desktop 3647 that is being sent via HDMI. So no, I do not think that touch will operate.Provide a link to the USB uplink cable with chip in it?

My friend dropped his laptop and so he's got it connected to a little TV. It's in-tact, but for some reason, the touch-keys at the top of his keyboard are blinking constantly, which result in the sound, mute, wifi and everything notices blinking every second.

Does anybody know how to disable the touch-keys? These are NOT the function keys. I really couldn't find anything through Google...
If I have to go through BIOS, could someone tell me the specific fn key to press? The screen is so bad, I couldn't tell which key to press during startup.

User manual is under Start, All Programs, Gateway. If you can't see to get there then the User Manual is at http://support.gateway.com/s/Manuals/gateway/MU20100104_PTB_User_Guide_1110.pdf.
