It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

Hello, I've buyed my Laptop (Yoga x1 2nd gen (Type 20JE)) in 10/17 together with the Thinkpak Thunderbolt 3 Dock and Lenovo L27q-10 Monitor. Ever since then i've got some minor issues with thunderbolt like a sporadic crash or non working USB devices when I connect my dock or my external graphics card (Sonnet eGFX Breakaway Boy) - however this has gotten better after some update in early 2018 I think. After I've installed the latest Thunderbolt Firmware Update Utility (v. 1.0.12.0 - N1NTF20W) it has gotten much worse. The first think I've noticed was that my external screen turned black for 1 second like once every hour. The second thing was that the Firmware Update will be shown again in Vantage after a reboot. I've tried to install the firmware update a couple of times but every time i will shown up again after a reboot (sometimes after the second or third reboot) and even tried to install other Thunderbolt software (for other Models) and flash the .bin file in linux like described here - https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/Thunderbolt-3-controller-has-expired/m-p/4416.... Like excepted every other Thunderbolt software will work even worse with many crashes and other Firmware Updates wont even get flashed in Windows. What got me wondered is that the description of the Firmware Update (https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n1nth08w.txt) say that its for Thunderbolt(TM) Controller - 15BF but my device manager... Hi Kressti!

Welcome to the Community,

The Thunderbolt Firmware update tool also downloads the version of Thunderbolt Controller Driver below,

https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/LAPTOPS-AND-NETBOOKS/THINKPAD-X-SERIES-LAPTOPS/THINKPAD-...

Might as well try installing it directly from the link above, and check for any changes. If the docking station that you're using is the Thinkpad Thunderbolt Driver here,

Update us how it goes.

We have 2 X1 Yoga 2nd Gen laptops that had the same issue. Thunderbolt failure that led to a missing thunderbolt controller and no longer charging. Before anyone suggestsThings we have done:pressed the reset buttonunplugged the cmos batterychanged the battery completelyDownloaded new drivers but Thunderbolt controller is missing and can't update. (they are both dead so and I can't remember exactly what is going wrong)Can't update firmware since we can't keep it on a charger as it wont charge. Currently don't have a Yoga X1 Gen 2 doner laptop except my coworkers so he is haven't to swap the batter in and out to give it power to do more testing when he can. I am assuming this is a full board replacement as they didn't seperate the Powerboard from the Mainboard unlike what they did with the Power switch which is on a seperate board....seems odd to me. Any doner board would come from a thirdparty and isn't something we are willing to do at this time. I would like to know if anyone else has had this problem as this is 2 out of the 8 we bought that are completely dead. Any help would be greatfully apprecitated. Thanks, S

Hi all, In the past few days my laptop slowly degraded, starting with docking station connectivity not working (but does work with other laptops), then HDMI port not working (HDMI screen and cable works with other laptops), and now system no longer charges. Current status is that all USB-C ports (including charge) and HDMI port and not functioning. Computer doesn't charge when it is off, too.  I've looked at multiple solutions and threads on this website without any real solution. I've already tried - - run Lenovo Vantage a few times to check updates. Did the same on the Lenovo product website (using auto-discovery of serial #), everything is fully updated- Turned on/off Thunderbolt Service (on the Windows 10 control panel) - I turned it on and automatic but it always returns to Manual- Searched in the Device Manager for Thunderbolt (anything) - it's not there- Uninstalled and re-installed Thunderbolt software from the Lenovo website (both controller driver and FW, file names n1nta05w.exe and n1nth08w.exe)- Went to the BIOS/Configuration - enabled and disabled again all Thunderbolt related options - Used Paperclip to do hard reset using the emergency reset button Any ideas what left to be done?  Thanks!

Having issues with updating Thunderbolt firmware.  Now that the new version of the FW update tool is out, I've verified that I'm on the latest driver version, but when I run the detect tool, I receive the following error: Capturing Current NVM Version.....Capturing Current NVM Version failed!Error: 0x20B SDK_NO_CONTROLLER - If I run the update tool itself, I get a popup stating that no controller driver is found and I need to install the software and connect a Thunderbolt 3 device, then click OK to proceed or click Cancel to cancel the firmware installation.  The problem is that the only Thunderbolt 3 device I have is my docking station, which doesn't work, because of the "botched" firmware update tool that was released in early September.  Seems I'm in a catch-22 with no way out.

Good morning, Got my brand new Yoga X1 2nd gen notebook together with the Thunderbolt 3 dock. I've a problem with the dock. When I connect it, it is recognized but I get a warning that the notebook is not charged and that I should connect the correct charger to the docking station. Moreover, when I connect an external display to the dock (via DP), the external display is not recognized, nor in the display settings nor can I manage to get a singal to the external monitor. I have installed the latest BIOS for the notebook (v. 1.10), latest Thunderbolt firmware and Thunderbolt drivers. I have rebooted serveral times, uninstalled, re-installed, disconnected etc.... to no avail. Anyone experiencing the same? Any solutions? Regards George

Hello Lenovo friends! I've been a huge fan of ThinkPads-- my first was a T400s back in 2009.  And I've definitely found them to be solid, reliable machines.  I purchased a ThinkPad X1E last November and just encountered a new problem today though-- when I use my TB dock and play video, I've been getting BSOD messages.  I've connected the dock to two monitors, one via DP and the other via HDMI.  The Stop code is "DRIVER_VERIFIER_DMA_VIOLATION." I've read online that to fix this BSOD, you simply download and install the latest TB firmware update.  So I tried doing that today. But when I go to install the firmware update, I'm getting conflicting instructions!  The first dialog box says, "Please do not plug the Type C or Thunderbolt device to your system while updating the Thunderbolt Firmware." The second dialog box instructs, "Please connect at least one Thunderbolt device to your PC..." What is the correct step to do?  I only have one Thunderbolt device and that's my dock.  Should I connect it to my X1E while I'm updating the TB firmware?  Or not?  I've read on other forum posts that other X1E owners have actually bricked their docks when performing TB updates so I'm very concerned about that too.  Can someone please advise?  Thank you! PS.  Here are some of my system details too, btw, in case that helps:My Product #:  20MFCTO1WWMy BIOS version:  N2EET37W 1.1... Hi All!Using the Lenovo System Update tool, I've updated the bios. It said everything went succesful. However under Device manager, there is an error for the System Firmware:"This device cannot start. (Code 10)Indicates a revision number encountered or specified is not one known by the service. It may be a more recent revision than the service is aware of."I've tried "Update Driver" but everytime with this same result.I've also tried "Uninstall Device". But then it goes back to a driver from 2006 (indeed the error is gone) and when I update the driver, the error is back. Also, after the update (during booting the computer, it says it was successful), the update is still listed under the System Update Tool, indicating it actually didn't install (see below). However, just trying it again, doesn't result in a different result. Does anyone have a suggestion what could be going on?(I think the bios update, which just a few days back became available, is related to certain security problems that Intel was having...)

Get a messagebox saying "battery not detected" and it's not charging from mains. So laptop has now turned into a desktop... as needs plugging in continually... making it almost useless for purpose. This happened exactly after firmware update a few weeks ago. By coincidence the management software also kindly informed me that it could manage the battery better and stop it wearing out by only charging up to 90% - fair enough, but don't treat me like a muppet and disable it without any way to get it back. Tons of Windows 10 updates today (after not being able to use it for a few weeks) but still no battery. I tried F1 BIOS but nothing there to enable the battery (only to disable it). This is frankly a joke - timing shows it's due to the firmware update because the battery was fine and lasted a couple of hours right before. In 25 years of countless laptops, have never had this problem - batteries weaken gradually but don't suddenly lock up and require a paid replacement suddenly. How do we run down our original battery properly before polluting the planet? Phil

Hello everyone, Lenovo System Update keep asking me to install version 10.0.56.3002 of Intel Management Engine Firmware on my ThinkPad Yoga 12 (Type 20DK) running Windows 10 Pro x64. Once I install the update, a cmd window pops up for a fraction of a second, then my PC restarts. However, the installation seems to fail as System Update keeps asking me to install the update again after the reboot. Hello! I have a Thinkpad X1 Yoga 2nd Generation (machine type 20JD) and I am trying to solve an unrelated issue when I accidentally broke the connector on the battery that connects it into the motherboard. I cannot find any information online about what type of connector this is so that I can replace the connector. I have no need to spend $150 on a new battery, as that is completely fine. The connection on the motherboard is also fine; it is only the connector on the battery. There are 7 pins that slide into this connector. I have attached a picture.  Thank you for the help!

Hello, the thunderbolt on my X380 Yoga completely stopped working. The software installed fine but upon updating the firmware the following promt appears:    When I check the version inside the Thunderbold software, this is what shows up:    I am running Windows 10 Home 1803. Any idea why this is not working? Is my thunderbolt controller not working properly? Thanks

A:Thunderbolt not working / Unable to update thunderbolt firmware

There is an issue with the update for the tunderbolt firmware when updating through the system update utility. This is a known issue that the Engineering department has been working on. The only known resolution to this issue so far has been to replace the system board. Im sorry for the inconvenience this is causing. If the device is still under warranty i would speak with the support center to have a tech install a new board.

Just wondering.  Are you running Vantage to check for updates?  I get that whenever I check for updates.  IF I dont check for updates it doesnt come up.  The other way it doesnt come up is if i disable Thunderbolt in BIOS.  BUT if I disable it in BIOS I get a fault error when I run Vantage to check for updates.  A Lenovo Employee says that it shouldnt generate an error and they are trouble shooting that.

My laptop screen started flickering the other day. A reboot solved the issue. Then it started happening more and more. Now I've rebooted a few times and I can't get past it. See the attached video. I don't believe it's the graphics card - if I plug in an external monitor everything is ok. Changing screen settings such as resolution also, doesn't help the issue and the issue appears even on the bios screen. I'll contact support about this, but they never have any interest in helping solve a problem remotely. They always jump to sending me a box and telling me it'll take 2 weeks to fix... which is a major problem since I work remotely and have no other PC. Also any devices I had connected to Thunderbolt ports were turning on and off. I'm not sure if the issue was related.

Hello, we are about to develop a strategy to deploy the Thunderbolt FW and Driver Update on about 1.500 Clients (All kind of supported models). To get started we need to find out current Driver and Firmware Version of Thunderbolt Devices. To do so, we want to use the detect1810 Tool which has been mentioned several times across the board by Lenovo Staff. But I need some more informations about this tool: - Is there an official Lenovo Download Link, I only found direct links on some kind of file hoster posted by Lenovo Staff members, but I need to make sure this tool is an official Lenovo Tool and has no malware etc... - Is there a list which Modell is supported by which version and how many version are available ?  (I know there are at least two version, 1810 and 1810r ) - Is it possible to save output straight into Registry/WMI or do we have to script that by ourself ? - Instead of using the tool, does anybode know a WMI Query to read the Firmware of the TB Controller ? I can get DriverVersion but not Firmware yet.... Thank you in advance GreetingsHeiko

I was updating my drivers for my new Lenovo Yoga 920 laptop and I tried to use this driver: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/no/en/products/LAPTOPS-AND-NETBOOKS/YOGA-SERIES/YOGA-920-13IKB-GLASS/do... However, the update keeps failing and the Type C ports do not work now. I can't charge my laptop. Luckely I am at 75%, so I have about 3-4 hours to fix this before I'm forced to take it to service. I tried this solution: https://www.gfisk.com/lenovo-yoga-pd-firmware-update-failure-ccg4-two-port-usb-c-controller/but it doesn't work for me. I'm getting desperate I'm supposed to press the power button for 8 seconds and the powering should be back on, but for me the lap top goes off after 3 seconds of holding the power button. I keep pressing the button of course to see what happens. But, when I turn back on, the battery still won't charge. And the firmware update keeps failing. I tried everything according to instructions, but with no avail. Please help! My laptop is off now, so I will wait for solutions here before I turn it back on.

Regarding the nice note pinned on Thunderbolt. I ran System Update on my P51 and no driver was offered, is there a delay to the roll out? I have had USB-C thunderbolt issues on my E570, can I expect similar updates on E570? It was not in the page but share the same controller? Can we expect any update on P50 as well?
