I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Will someone please explain to me briefly what the difference is between all of these? Why would one want one over the other?

I guess that Windows 2000 is sort of like NT Workstation. If not, please tell me.

And what is the difference between Windows 2000 Server and 2000 Advanced Server?

A:{Advice Offered} - Windows 2000 Professional, 2000 Server, 2000 Anvanced Server--the difference?

Greetings

Win2K Professional is, indeed, just NT Workstation 5.0

The real difference between Win2K Server and Win2K Advanced Server is scalability. To quote a CNET article: "Three versions of the operating system will be available next week (it's an old article): Windows 2000 Professional, aimed at PCs and workstations; Windows 2000 Server, for file-and-print servers; and Windows 2000 Advanced Server, supporting clustering, which is a way of making several systems act as a single, more powerful computer.

To quote the FAQ from www.winmag.com:
Windows 2000 Professional is the workstation edition of Windows 2000. This is basically Windows NT Workstation 5.0, although Win2K Professional of course includes all of the new technologies for Win2K.

Windows 2000 Server/Advanced Server is the server edition of Windows 2000, which is designed to serve small- to mid-sized businesses and workgroups. Server supports up to 4GB of physical RAM and up to 4 processors per computer. Advanced Server supports up to 8GB of RAM and 8 processors per computer.

Windows 2000 Datacenter Server is designed for large businesses and computer clusters. Datacenter supports up to 32 processors per computer and up to 64GB of RAM, as well as built-in clustering and load-balancing features.

Is that what you wanted?

Cheers

Just curious if anyone has an estimate as to how long SQL Server 2000 SP3a takes to install (all three components).
I realize this will vary based on numerous factors that I don't want to get into but I'm just looking for a roundabout number like 10 minutes (ya, right!), 6 hours, or 24 hours (sure hope not!) - somewhere in between? I really don't need specifics.

Maybe a better question is how long did it take any of you to install SP3a.

Thanks!

I have 6 computers in a workgroup that need to be synchronized to a workgroup server.  The server is a virtual Win 7 running on a Windows 10 host.  Neither the server or client computers have internet access.  I started the process by configuring
the host to use its CMOS clock as its time source, which seems to have worked. The client computers are not virtual and can communicate with the Win 10 host as I am able to RDP to the host from the clients.  I made the following registry key changes to
get that accomplished.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\W32Time\Config]

"SpecialPollTimeRemaining"=hex(7):00,00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\W32Time\TimeProviders\NtpServer]
"Enabled"=dword:00000001

<-------End of REG file------->
After applying these changes, I ran the following 'w32tm /config /update /syncfromflags: NO

I get a message that the command is successful.

Currently we are on an NT network with a few 2000 servers tossed in. Today I learned that the plan is to migrate everything to Linux. Lets assume that this only applies to the servers and that the users will still operate with 98/nt/2000/xp. What are your thoughts on this?

I put this in this forum for a reason. Because I'd rather get the advice from 2000 and 2003 experts who know what Linux cannot replace than to hear the Linux fanboys and anti-Microsoft activists praise it to the high heavens.

What would your concerns be if this was done on your network? What problems have you encountered if you'd tried this? Or what successes? Know of any businesses that have done this successfully?

Hello,

I have a problem to access file server on Windows Server 2000 from a Windows 7 PC. For your information, due to some reasons, both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2000 are in different domain.

I have tried all suggested solutions which are :
i. to unchecked both attributes in 'Network Security : Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC)' for both clients and server.
ii. to apply 'Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated' in 'Network Security : LAN Manager authentication level'
iii. to make sure the time setting for both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2000 are the same.

But still, i couldn't access the file server. In fact, each time I entered domain\username to authenticate, it will give out this message :

Since I am kinda new to this troubleshooting things, it would be great if someone can tell me why does this happening. Is it because of the different domain?

thanks in advance.

A:Windows 7 unable to Access file server on Windows Server 2000

To connect to the server you would need to enter the credentials of the domain user on the server that would have access. For example if the domain was 'home' with a user 'Josh' then I would put:

home\Josh

As the username. If you want to get advanced you could try and form a trust with the other domain in active directory so that the other domain has permission to access the server

I was trying to sync Windows time with Internet timer Server. I was following this tutorial : Time Synchronization - Turn On or Off in Windows 8

For the first option, I couldn't couldn't find the necessary options.

For the second option, I've already set my settings right.
But, still my windows 8 time was showing wrong.

I had to change my BIOS time to make the necessary change to Windows time.

So, what happened here. Can windows 8 override BIOS time? or How can I set Windows time to Internet time server even if my BIOS time is wrong.

Thank you for your help.

A:Synchronize windows time with internet time server.

Yes the OS can override the BIOS time. It uses UTC to update. Check your time zone in Date & Time tab, to see if that is why your time is off.

Hi All

Am I right in thinking that they are both pretty similar except that server has support for multiple processors and extra network related tools and facilities. The reason I ask is that if a piece of software works on Windows 2000 server, is it extremely likely that it will work on Windows 2000 professional too? As a bit of background information: I work for a small company which supplies temperature monitoring equipment which needs to be networked. I've been told that it has been tested on Windows 2000 server but not on Window 2000 professional.

Thanks

A:Windows 2000 professional and Windows 2000 server: same?

Yes, the OS are pretty much the same. The server edition supports more than 10 simultaneous connections (for file and print sharing) and supports network stuff as you said. But those differences could potentially break an application depending on what it does and how it interacts with the OS.

Hi, first of all check the TIME ZONE is correct in both Windows and Linux. Also check the Day Light Savings is set correctly. I suspect you have different time zones in Windows and Linux. Here in Indiana till a few years ago when we started daylight Savings on Eastern Time this was a common issue as some PC's were set to Central and some to Eastern so they were wrong half the time.

Since I upgraded to Windows 2000 SP3 I have the strange effect that the explorer keeps looking for my favorites in D:\winnt, which is clearly the wrong path. I uninstalled Internet Explorer, that's to say I went back to IE 5.0, which is prabably the integrated explorer in Windows 2000 SP2. In de add/remove programs dialogue there is no Internet explorer anymore, (the IE microsoft component is marked as 0 bytes). However IE5.0 is there and it takes the wrong path to my favorites.
In the registry I see at: Windows\explorer\shellfolders\favorites the wrong value: d:\winnt. However when I change this into the right path, then the explorer sets this value back to d:\winnt.
Even just by rebooting the registry value is set to this wrong value.

Where does Windows 2000 store those personal settings and where can I find the particular setting of the favorites path?
I spend already two days for this problem......any ideas?
Do I have to reinstall my original Windows 2000 for this stupid problem?

I'm located in US/Canada Central Time Zone, but in order to get my computer clock to show the right time I have to select the Pacific Time Zone.  How do I fix this?  I've selected Canada as my location in the Control Panel, and I can access
changing the time zone under General in "Change PC Settings"; but if I pick Central Time Zone, the time on the clock shows up 2 hours ahead of what it actually is here.  In order to get the clock to display the right time I have to select Pacific
Time Zone.

A:Time zone wrong in Windows 8

It's pretty simple. The internal clock on your computer is set incorrectly. Click on the time/date in the lower right hand corner of your desktop, and select the "Change date and time settings..." hyperlink. Set the time zone to "Central Time Zone". Now
adjust the time explicitly by selecting the "Change date and time". If you are within 2 or 3 minutes of the correct time, the computer should eventually sync with an external time server.

Hello!

I am having a strange issue with speed and time calculation during coping large files from my laptop's SSD (Samsung PRO 840 with speed drive function enabled) to USB 2.0 external drive. Whenever I use explorer (not a browser) functions or TotalCommander, when I copy files large than 1Gb, the speed goes way up to 1 500 mb\s (sic!) or 500 mb\s, then the progress bar stutters on 15% or 20% while led on the external drive keeps blinking. After some time progress bar goes further but speed goes to 40-50 mb\s and stays like that until copy is finished.

It was not like that before.

What I was tried to do:

1. I have tried to turn off all not-windows related services;
2. I have tried to turn off antivirus (malawarebytes) and speed-drive function of the SSD on top of that with no luck;
3. I have tried other USB2.0 ports;
4. I have checked my CPU and Memory and HDD- no errors whatsoever;
5. I have tried with USB3.0 port too - same thing;
6. I have tried to turn off caching and turn it on again - no joy.

P.S. My external drive and cable are USB3.0, but I am using USB2.0 port, be cause there is only one USB3.0 port on my laptop and it used by another external drive.

You can see what happens on the video in the attach.

I would be glad to get any advice on that issue. Thank you very much.

It's critical that my PC keeps the exact time as I record TV shows on it so just a few seconds off one way or the other will make me miss the start or end of my shows.

I found it was drifting off too much between syncs so I found a program that lets me set it to sync daily, however it seems like most of the time it gets the time completely wrong, often as much as 30-90 seconds off. I did notice that when syncing manually in the time settings it normally gets the right time each time, so I don't know why the scheduled syncs get the wrong time.

I did try several of the time servers with the same results.

Is there just no way to get the Windows time sync to work properly and if not are there free third party programs that can do it reliably?

Thanks

Hello everyone,after using Windows 7 Ultimate on my laptop for almost 2 years I decided to upgrade to Windows 8. The first day it was working fine,no problems at all. The other day I disconnected my USB mouse and it would keep on playing the disconnect sound, however, I solved that issue. Recently since yesterday whenever I would start my laptop and login,the windows start up sound won't play. It plays once I connect any one usb device to the laptop, but it will play the default usb connected sound with the latter devices. I ticked the 'play windows sound on start up' at the sound properties. Some help would be really appreciated.

A:Windows 8 start up sound plays at the wrong time.

What sound driver do you have installed? If you just have the Microsoft installed generic HD Audio Codec instead of the correct sound driver from your PC vendor that could be the problem.

Also, please fill in the "My System Specs" so we know what hardware you have and what we are dealing with.

A:Windows 8 clock changing to wrong time after every restart

What does it change it to? The reason I ask is that I had a similar problem because Microsoft didn't implement daylight saving time for the timezone I was in (Tunisia) which was later fixed. Until the fix I had to use Paris instead where the hour offset was correctly implemented.

I'd run a trojan/antivirus scan. I know that the SubSeven uses that dll as well as a few others.

Hackfix has a nice site that'll help you find out if you've been infected with sub7 or not. Even if not, I'd still run a full scan.

I'm not sure if this should go in the software forum or here... but I think NetShield is included with Windows 2000 Server so I'll post it here.

About 3 weeks ago netshield stopped working on my server. The icon just sits in the system tray with a red circle w/ a line going through it. When I load a TS connection I am prompted with the following when the desktop loads:

"The NetShield Task Manager or On-Access Scanning service is not running on the local server. Would you like to start services now?"

I click "Yes" the red circle/line goes away for about 3 seconds and then returns.

If I right click on the icon and choose "Enable" I get the following prompt:

"The NetShield Task Manager or On-Access Scanning service is not running on the server 'MYSERVERNAME'. Would you like to start services now?"

Of course I would! So I click "Yes" and nothing happens.

If I view the services there are 3 services for this application. All of them are set to "Auto" but only two of them are running. The service not running is "Network Associates McShield." If I try to start the service I get an error stating:

"Could not start the Network Associate McShield service on local Computer.

Error 1067: The Process terminated unexpectedly"

Grrrrrrr....

So my first thought is "maybe I have a virus prohibiting the service from enabling. So I ran 3 different online virus scans and found nothing ... Read more

Hey guys and gals!

I need a crash course (ie. book or online resource) on Windows 2000 Server. Where I work, we have dozens of Win2K machines and dozens of problems. My boss approached me yesterday with the possibility of hiring me to do part-time work to get everything up and running again. I told him I could do everything except server-side stuff, but I would LIKE to be able to handle things on the server end as well, I just don't have the knowledge. Anybody know where I can get it fast and cheap?

Thanks!

Try the Microsoft Administrator's Pocket Consultant series of books from the Microsoft Press. There are books for Win2K server, Win2K3 server, Exchange, IIS X.0 etc. They have proven a good source of reference for me being an experienced systems admin, and use enough examples and basic understanding for anyone to understand.

In my company we all are connected to our server via Cable connection thru a Router. We all access the data base in our server as well as the web. My company wants to limit employees to access certain websites that could invite hackers to crash our system. We do have an antivirus but that will not stop hackers. We found out that some employees are accessing the web too much. Is there a way to restrict an employee from certain sites??? What software do you recommend, or is there a way someone can walk me thru the network security issue ???? Thank you very much, any help I will really appreciate.

Hello all. I hope this question is ok here. New to networking. Mostly programming and internet experience. Anyway, I have a problem I need to figure out myself here at work. Network guy is on call in his spare time and has been awol lately. I tried to use the search here, but it is down. I need to activate a network wall outlet in another room to add the blueprint printer so we can print from our desktop, instead of putting drawings on disk and going to other computers to print job. Is there any info on how to activate the outlet? I have seen the server and how the guy has the wires going from one area to another in a numbered peg-like board. I dont think this is too difficult to do, but just need some direction. The server is windows 2000 and the computer accessing the network to print uses win xp pro. Hope I gave enough info. Thanks for any help and guidance you guys can offer! Tony.

I have a Compaq Proliant ML370 running Windows 2000 server.It allows me to login but then gives me a blank desktop. When I use Task manager in an attempt to browse to my system drive I am unable to run explorer.exe. The infection has diabled system related executables on the server. I can not access the internet to run an online scan either.So far I have tried the following:Cant get to a command prompt, control panel or any administrative function on the computerRemoved the infected drives & installed another in order to install fresh copy of Windows 2000After the new Windows 2000 install I then applied sp4 and 79 Microsoft critical updates.I installed a trial version of Kaspersky Enterprise AV Software on the serverI have unplugged the server from the networkEverything seemed to run fine after installing the new copy of Win 2000, until I added the infected drives, which I did scan with the Kaspersky software, however soon after the scan I started seeing signs of infection on my new drive. My NIC does not appear to be working and now Kaspersky Administration shows that I have an IP address of 127.0.0.1.The infection appears to have originated from a TAX program update.At this point, I can login to the server with the new drive I created, and I can see the other drives. I am afraid I will lose my ability to perform administrative tasks over time (just like the original system drive did).Just a note, almost all of the client computers on this network have been infected a...
