Window Update and Defender NOT updating

Q: Window Update and Defender NOT updating

In view of the "latest" ransom ware "scare" stories in the news I thought I'd double check and make sure Windows Defender was up to date. I keep Windows Update turned on to automatically get whatever updates Microsoft sends out, but just wanting to be "sure," I tried a Defender scan first. It ran for a minute or two, stopped, and said Defender needed to be updated. Another panel opened, said Auto Updates was enabled and began to "search" for updates. All it did was search and nothing more. After 15 or 20 minutes of it "searching" I stopped it.

I decided to go to Windows Update and check for my self that it was enabled and was downloading the new Microsoft updates as they were being released. My "assuming" it was doing this was apparently wrong. When I opened Updates I had a panel that said "Windows 10 could not be installed" Error found 80004004 Windows Update encountered unknown error." I "Like" my Win7 machine and I've never wanted, or tried, to install Win10 on it, so I don't know where that "failed" install came from. Further checking for any other previous updates I found that the last updates were back in 11/2016. After cutting and pasting the System Info it shows I have "no" antivirus protection!?

This is an older, 5 or 6 years (?), Alien machine used specifically as a gaming machine and gaming only.

Preferred Solution: Window Update and Defender NOT updating

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Yeah, I am going to switch my protection package soon to the recommended one later. However I was wondering, the only update I had today was a window definition update but oddly enough it ended up taking 4-5 gb of memory. I don't really mind much due to my system still having 195 gb worth of memory left. But I do find it odd that a update in definition can take up 4-5 gb of memory. Is that normal?

A:Window Defender Update Question

You are getting things a bit mixed up I think.
It is not possible to have that much memory.
What you are quoting is the Hard Drive Storage.
Memory is RAM. If you go to Control Panel, System it will tell you how much RAM your system has.

A:Windows 7 not updating to SP1 Window Update failing error code 800736B

Hello and welcome Greg now I am assuming you have 7 onboard and have been using it - or is it a new install and you are trying to get SP1 installed?.

If it is the latter then it is easily fixed using this tutorial
Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7
If you have data on the install then if it isn't too much just back it up and do the tutorial.

Just one thing make sure you only pick the version you have an activation code for as trying to get a higher version installed will end in grief.

I am having trouble with Windows Defender and Update. I am getting error 0x800705b4 for Defender and though I've searched online on how to fix the problem none of them seem to work. Also, my computer won't let me access the update & security portion of my settings. When I click on it the window closes immediately.

A:Can't turn on Windows Defender and cannot open windows update window

RE : I am having trouble with Windows Defender and Update. I am getting error 0x800705b4
That error code usually happens, but not necessarily always because of that, when you have a 3rd party anti-virus program installed, such as Avast, AVG, Norton and McAfee. Those programs mentioned have their own defender and having 2 defenders running in the same computer will create conflicts, not to mention redundancy. Therefore, those programs will shut down Windows Defender.

Please disregard the suggestion posted below. I misunderstood your question.

RE : my computer won't let me access the update & security portion of my settings
Try this tutorial :

Windows Defender is updated daily by regular Windows updates. Check your update history in the control panel.

I have two Windows 10 Pro computers, one a desktop and the other a laptop. The desktop computer works well, Windows Defender updates its virus definitions about when I log on in the morning, so always updated for the day. And this is automatic, I don't have to go to Windows Updates to get the latest Windows Defender update. There may or may not be intraday auto updates for Windows Defender virus definitions, but just having it update when I boot up my computer in the morning is very desirable. This is obviously what I want.

The laptop computer, when I look at the virus definition under "Update", I see that it is usually a day or 2 old. It doesn't update at the morning login, and I usually manually update the virus definitions as a result of the lack of auto updating.

So my question is obviously how do I get the laptop to update Windows Defender virus definitions automatically as often as my desktop. Both have the Anniversary Update, and I'm not aware of any differences in their Windows Update configurations.

A:Windows Defender not updating as often as it should?

1 of 2 days behind doesn't seem a cause for concern. Anyway, as I suspect you want to find out the cause, did you try the manual update button inside WD to see what happens? I had one laptop failing on me when trying to update WD through Windows Update. I think I had to completely remove installed definitions and redownload them again. I copied these commands from someone on this same forum:

"%PROGRAMFILES%\Windows Defender\MPCMDRUN.exe" -RemoveDefinitions -All
"%PROGRAMFILES%\Windows Defender\MPCMDRUN.exe" -SignatureUpdate

I noticed that there is a new definition for W8 Defender. My laptop last automatic update was 3 days ago. (01/12/14)
I tried to update it manually but the green updating bar stops about 1/3 way flashing to say that it is updating. I left for an hour
but it had not got any further. I rebooted and tried again but the same happened. As this should on automatic update, is there
any concern ? Should I leave it to see if it kicks in later ?
I have no other antivirus running.

A:Solved: W8 Defender not manually updating

have you checked your internet? it might be that is slow so is taking sometimes to update but yes you're right it should be an automatic update from windows. I will try a more strong and secure anti virus that windows defender but that been said I will keep on trying or wait for the upcoming one maybe it might solve the glitch.(since Microsoft is known for that)

Win 7 professional 64 SP1 all patches applied till today.

Some days ago I got a Definitions Update, like many others before.
But this time it failed to apply with an numeric code.

Since I don't have MS Security Essentials (never installed it for what I can recall) and just have free Avira, Spyware Blaster and Malware Bytes, it should not be disabled or something.

After reading a number of posts on the MS forums I tried manually starting the defender service, which failed with error 126 (could not find its mpsvc.dll DLL).
I noticed the required DLL, along with a couple others, was in Program Files, while the registry entry for it was set to %ProgramFiles (86)%\Windows Defender\mpsvc.dll.

Not willing to fiddle with the registry, I just applied a .reg fix others on the MS support forums found useful to fix this issue with.

But it did not help. The definitions update indeed worked but now the defender service won't start at all and shows as disabled (trying to start it does nothing, no error, no Windows logs in events viewer.

What I get now is: "<Impossibile leggere la descrizione. Codice di errore: 1168 >" which translated is "Unable to read the description. Error code:1168"

Like Internet Explorer, Windows Defender is integrated into Windows 7 and you cannot remove it. But it shouldn't be relied upon to protect your system and since you're using Malwarebytes, the best thing to do is to disable it. I've seen instances though whereby the "Tools" menu in Windows Defender is greyed out so that you cannot access it. If that's the case in your own case as well, click the Start button and then type: services.msc in the search field at the bottom of the menu to load it. Click the link to run it, then find "Windows Defender" in the list, double click it and change the "Startup Type" to "Disabled". You'll need to reboot to complete the command.

So I uninstalled mcafee recently and it turns out the antivirus program had blocked windows defender (a software I never knew I had until now!) and its updates all this time. Suddenly I started to see in system restore that a critical update had been installed without my knowing, shortly after the uninstall of mcafee. This turns out to be a definition file for Windows Defender.

The thing is though: I have windows update set on allowing me to choose when or whether or not I install new updates. So why has this windows defender update managed to get around it and install it without me allowing it?

And how can I stop this in the future?

Regards, apologies for my English, it is not my native language.

I recently reinstalled a windows 7 64 bit OS and I encountered the error 0x80004004 when I disabled windows defender.

I have investigated and found that this error can originate due to a third party antivirus program, the issue is that in this case there were none installed.

Experimenting, I discovered that the error only occurs after updating windows, I explain:

Install windows and after starting disable windows defender without problems.

I look for updates, installs them and after reboot, deactivate windows defender and throws the error "Operation aborted error 0x80004004"

I have run antivirus and disinfection tools, malwarebytes, zemana antimalware, adware cleaner, hitmanpro, etc. To rule out infections and all analyzes come out clean.

Do you know if there is any specific update that is causing problems with windows defender?

Thanks in advance.

So at first, I noticed that my computer was acting weird. Decided to start with an offline scan with windows defender so that no virus has the chance to load with windows, it detected nothing. Much to my annoyance, it was a quick scan and not full scan....After, I scanned with MB and then finally Emsisoft Emergency Kit. While EEK was updating, Windows defender detected a virus. Name of it is Virus:DOS/Dodgy.A, and path file is file:_E:\Temp Files\TMP\EEK\a2temp\_up_\bin32\Signatures\BD\cevakrnl.rv0.diff->[HtmlCmtOut]->(SCRIPT0001). Also, using Event viewer, I keep seeing logs of "Windows Defender Configuration has changed. If this is an unexpected event you should review the settings as this may be the result of malware.". WD told me that it cannot remove the virus, but I had the option to delete the file, so I did. But then, reading about this virus, it seems to replicate itself by infecting other files, so this is why I am asking for help, to nuke my computer with the holy powers of virus removal, make sure I don't have anything else lurking about.

this and why isn't creating the folder in the OS partition but randomly choosing any disk that is mounted?

If it does not work
Try a system restore.

Did make recovery disks for use in this situation? Recovery is in a partition on your hard drive. You can constantly tapping F8 when you start the computer and see if you can get in using Safe Mode. If you get in you can got to Start, All Programs, Acer, Acer eRcovery Management. That doesn't work? Try borrowing a copy of Windows (same version) and use it to start up the unit and click on repair. No? You can buy a set of recovery disks from Acer.
