win xp installed on new hard drive...has only ever booted to safe mode

Q: win xp installed on new hard drive...has only ever booted to safe mode

I installed a 20 gb hard drive disconnected my old one that didn't work, installed winxp and it boots only to safe mode. From there I can access the net ( I am now) and I have tried to change startup items in msconfig, but it still only boots to safe mode. I cannot revert to an older startup that worked successfully, as it hasn't happened yet. What can I do?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Althought this sounds like a hardware incompatibility, since it's a new install, you might boot the CD and run a system repair.

Hi Guys I hope someone can help!

I tried to boot into safe mode so I pressed win key + R got run cmd , typed msconfig and instead of going to "start up" I clicked on "Boot" and "Network" and then "Restart".

Upon restarting I got the "enter password" so I did and now it doesn't recognize it, I have a 4 fig password.
( I did have another P/W which I used when I first got the machine I kept forgetting so I changed to the 4 Fig instead so I wondering if by some weird reason its looking for the old P/W, then I'm defiantly screwed!)

I tried to go in as a guest account but it didn't work either! Well I thought I'll do a complete shutdown and restart which didn't work as well. I rebooted and went F2/Del and after a minute up came the UEFI files I 'm used to the old BIOS boot screens so I didn't know where to start and that's where I am now.

Can someone please keep me?
Update 14:10 Local Time

"The System" is not seeing C drive that's why I can't do anything in either system restore or refresh!
When I tried to re-install windows 8, the partition table that appears so you can choose which to use didn't show C drive at all. The only way in is thru command prompt and I don't know what to type anyway!

The following file was loaded while in safe mode, because the viruses I have do not allow notepad to open, presumably for this reason exactly. I could only get this information from hijackthis while in safe mode, and then they wouldn't let me on this website either (404 error), so I am on another computer right now so that I can access this website. Most websites related to tech support and anti-spyware software are blocked right now. Because its in safe mode, all of the information may not be there, but any suggestions are GREATLY appreciated.

Hello everyone, I'm not sure if I am allowed to post this on here since its partially about windows 8, so if it's not allowed then I apologize.

First off I have a 2TB internal HDD and 1.75TB of that is for windows 7 the rest for 8, and everything runs okay at the moment as I symlinked my steam games.

Anyway, I can access windows 8 safe mode easily enough through the select operating system screen, but how do I now access windows 7's safe mode? it must be possible, preferably without booting into it.

I may not have looked hard enough and if it's extremely simple I'm going to feel stupid

Hello Cryptoncore,

You might be interested in option two and three in this tutorial.

If you want it the easy way (which I recommend), you might want to read this tutorial (it is on Eight Forums, but this works on both Windows 7 and 8), it will explain how to add all boot options to your context menu, which is very useful in both Windows 7 and 8.

Hey guys. I just joined and am not sure if this thread goes here but I really need some help.
I have a dell laptop XPS L502 with bios version a01 which I've found is way outdated because i reset the pc a while ago. Yesterday I was trying to upgrade from windows 7 premium 64 bit to windows 8.1. Now 8.1 was on a USB I got from my flatmate who has alot of pc knowledge and he said I'd need to boot from the usb. Tried it but to no avail, so I tried to go into my bios but nothing showed up? He said I should try going into the laptop set up cause it might be something to do with a safe mode boot being changed that is stopping it from reading. So I put safe mode boot on and restarted the laptop. I managed to get into the bios and found it was an out of date version so I went to login to download an update for it. I exited the bios and then the laptop booted into safe mode (basic ) I think it was, so I logged off because I couldn't use it to get on the internet. When I logged back in in NORMAL mode All of a sudden I no longer have wireless access, ethernet access, and both my USB's no longer work.

I've tried redoing the network drivers from my dell disk but it says "cannot install this package on your pc". So I went into device manager and saw that networking isn't there at all??? No drivers or adaptors? My USB's are there and it says they're all working fine but nothing connects when I plug into them.

Any help would be great, as I know I could restore my Laptop to fa... Read more

I was wondering if there was anybody out there who could help me diagnose this problem. I am running Windows Vista Home Edition in 32-bit, and my computer has been freezing up since early yesterday. It runs perfectly fine if I run my computer in Safe Mode (it even runs perfectly fine in Safe Mode with Networking), but if I boot the computer normally, it will eventually freeze up. When you boot it normally, it seems to be working fine for about 2 or 3 minutes, and then whenever I open ANY window or program (internet browsers and Windows Explorer windows included), it will freeze up after about 30-60 seconds. I end up having to manually power off my laptop, and when I boot it up again a Disk Check utility comes up. I have run this utility twice and the first time it found corrupt music files, and the second time it found some corrupt .dat and .ini files. I don't remember what indexes those were from, or even the names of the files. I have run Avast Antivirus in a Boot Time Scan and it did not find any viruses.

If there are any steps I need to take or any programs I need to run, I'm more than happy to try them out. Thanks!

From googling around and checking it out myself most answers point to Malware but I have tried a multitide of Scans and fixes suggested to me and none have managed to fix the problem at all, I'm beginning to think perhaps Malware is not the cause of the issue at all, I really have no idea. Booting in Safe Mode with networking has allowed me to come here and ask for help just fine. Does anyone know what could be causing the issue and what I could do to find and fix the problem?

I have a problem. Two problems to be exact, but the most pressing being that my mouse doesn't work. It is stuck in the middle of the screen, and the cursor is invisible.

The original problem I had, prior to developing this new mouse problem, was the start menu. Neither the windows button nor the icon on the bottom left corner of the screen would open up the windows menu.

To try the solve that, I followed the instructions found in this video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WnAf_NccrXw&app=desktop

I was directed to restart my computer.
Upon restarting it, I was booted into safe mode, BUT my mouse wouldn't move, and the cursor was invisible.

I have tried unplugging the mouse and restarting multiple times, but to no avail. So currently, my main issue is that the computer won't detect my mouse, and I am unable to do anything.

If anyone could please help me out, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks for your time.

A:Win10 Booted in Safe Mode - Mouse doesn't work

Does the keyboard work? If it does you can do a lot with it, without a mouse. Just takes a bit of trial and error.
Is the mouse plugged into a USB3 port perhaps? If so, try a USB2 port. Even if not, use a different USB port. If plugged into the rear USB, try the front.

Recently, I accidentally clicked on a few bad google links. Soon after, my computer started acting weirdly. I started receiving windows notices saying that my computer was infected with spyware. I could tell that these were fake and started scanning my computer with avast anti-virus. It was acting weirdly and then I saw that a window popped up called "vista anti-virus" i then googled this and found that this was a fake anti-virus that would install more viruses on my computer. So, I panicked and manually shut down my computer with the power button and booted into safe mode. I then scanned my computer with avast and spybot s&d. It removed as many trojans, spyware, and adwares that it could find, except a few, the only which of that i remember was a trojan called smit.fraud. So I googled smit.fraud and found that it could be fixed with this tool: http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php . After running this, i thought that my problems would be fixed. So, I booted normally and I could still see some icons from the virus like Privacy Protector, Fetish Pics, and weirdly, ESET Nod32 anti-virus, none of which I (deliberately) installed. Alright, here's what happened. My dad's hard computer crashed, and we've spent the better half of 12 hours trying to recover about 30 gigs of music off of it. The problem is that the Windows repair stuff that came with our Windows 7 Ultimate isn't helping AT ALL, neither is repair disks, or any other junk that you can think of (and believe me, we've tried it all). When we try to boot the hard drive we get a "Error Configuring System" message, and when we've tried to run Safe Mode by holding f8, it doesn't allow us to. Now, we've also tried running an alternate boot source from the BIOS menu, then holding f8 to see if it'll give us advanced BIOS options and allow us to get to safe mode that way... but to no avail. This is frustrating me and him beyond belief and we can't find any help on the internet here. Hopefully you computer guru's can lend us some of your brain power to help fix this problem.

A:Hard Drive crashed and I can't run Safe Mode?

If the hard drive crashed, in the traditional sense, it is toast. Everything on the drive may be lost.

I think that you may mean that the computer crashed, not the hard drive

Hello link626 Welcome to the Ten Forums!

Often something will be writing to the drive that will be running unnoticed in the background. One way to force the drive to sleep a bit when not being active would be going into the Start>Settings>System>Power & Sleep to make a few adjustments maybe even create a new custom plan. When the Power & Sleep screen appears you then go to the Additional power settings option at the bottom to open up the next screen where you can simply click on the Change plan settings for the Balanced plan the laptop came with which then moves onto the next screen or simply change from Balanced to Power saver.

On the third screen under any plan you will see the Change advanced power settings option which brings up a totally new screen full of items where you will find the Hard Disk settings are the second item in plain view for raising or lowering the minutes of inactivity before the drive goes to sleep as well as the "never" option for high performance desktop application mostly.

For creating a totally new plan where you can tweak things at your own pace leaving the other existing plans untouched you will want to review the guide for Creating your own power plan

I have a non-branded box running Windows XP Home Edition. After un-installing Netgear USB Adapter software and restarting the computer I received a BSOD with a Page_Fault_In_Nonpaged_Area. After this I was able to access Safe Mode w/o any problems.

No big deal. After I backed-up all of my information (it wasn't much) I inserted my XP Disc but it stated that no hard disks could be found. I started Windows XP setup while in Safe Mode. It eventually failed. Now I cannot access Safe Mode because each time I do I receive the following error. Windows XP Setup cannot run under Safemode. Setup will restart now.

Now each time I restart the computer I eventually receive the following notice Setup is being restarted.... which then fails and leads to the BSOD screen.

Ok, I realized I have a Promise MBFasttrack 133 Raid controller and downloaded the controller driver to a USB drive. Since the box has a floppy drive my hope was to access safe mode and copy that information to the floppy. But since I cannot access Safe Mode this is not possible.

Each time I boot from the XP disc and press F6 to install the needed driver it goes straight to the A: drive.

I have no problem re-installing the OS but how can I get to the point that the XP disc recognizes the hard drive? Many thanks for looking.

Hey Guys I am trying to fix a company computer, and it is windows 7, all of a sudden when we would start the computer it would just restart at the black starting windows screen after the bios, I switched out ram of the same kind and the harddrive of the same kind and nothing worked, same thing, although I can start it in safe mode, in safe mode I get a message about cant install USB device, the only thing USB is the mouse and keyboard so I started it up with only the keyboard and selected "start windows normally" and then quickly unplugged it and still nothing! This is very frustrating, I even went into the computer properties and unchecked "Restart automatically when theres an error" and when I hit the button to enter safe mode there was also a option to "restart computer and turnoff auto restarts" but yet it still happened. Any ideas on what to try? At first we thought it had something to do with the electrical outlet in the wall because we put plugged in another computer in there and that one started acting up to, (its possible the old computer may have already had problems) so then the next morning we just plugged in a brand new computer and it worked. Thanks in advance for any ideas and solutions. Also this computer was a billing computer not used online much at all (didnt download music/movies or other random stuff)

Hello all,

After trying to scan my computer with tdskiller (I believe its called) to remove some viruses, I was asked to reboot. When I did, my backround desktop picture turned black, files seemed to be missing from my desktop and a window poped up scanning and telling me how many errors I had. Shortly after I got about 20 error pop up messages. I rebooted my computer and more files were missing to the point all I had was recycle bin, and two other programs.

Now the computer runs only in safe mode, No matter what I do (pressing f8 - start in normal mode) nothing works. I cant get internet access, and worst of all, I cant even system restore or even recover it back to to the malfunctioners option due to errors. I am stuck and do not know what else to try.

Ive tried the repair option in dos aswell and it just keeps me in the "Loading window files" screen, as I left it there for nearly four hours im guessing that was not going to work.

and the desktop is there, someone else's desktop with all their programs.

So I go to system page, and what !!??
It says it is activated.

I did not think windows would do that, reconfigure itself on an entirely different PC and still remain activated.
So now I have a win 8.1 pro PC for $15 from an ebay drive. I saw from history person may have been a NASA employee. Is this some kind of NASA PC drive, or some kind of volume licensing OS? How can I find that out?

And if I run Belarc to retrieve the key, can this be upgraded to win 10 pro and remain activated??

Could i move the drive to another PC and it redetects again and also still remain activated?

I will likely just use it as is. It has Avast, so likely not infected.

A:Ebay hard drive booted to 8.1 pro and is activated?

That is what you get with used drives. You need to nuke it to remove all traces of any previous software install.

Also do not think that it is not infected. I would never use a hard drive bought off of ebay, until it was sterilized of any previous use and S.M.A.R.T. info was checked.

Have just put together a new PC. Installed WinXP Home edition (an upgrade version) with no problems, but it will hardly ever boot properly. It always gets to the Windows XP logo screen; then goes black, showing me the cursor; then just waves goodbye with a tiny little circular dot fading into black in the middle of the screen (sometimes varies this with a screen of fragmented blue lines. Nice.)

So I hit restart and thankfully it recognises it didn't shut down properly, giving me all the options of how I want to restart. I can always restart in Safe Mode, and XP works fine and allows me to do what the hell I want. I have, literally once or twice, managed to start XP normally but it's always crashed after about 5 minutes.

If Safe Mode didn't function so well I'd assume I'd somehow damaged something on the motherboard or hard drive. But who knows... There's a couple of ideas I've had as to what the problem is:

1. I do receive the message "No drive attached to FastTrak controller, The BIOS is not installed" on starting up - I've discounted this as the problem as the BIOS is very much installed (it's cos my moboard can control a RAID configuration if I want it to). I don't think this has anything to do with it.

2. There's something screwy with my floppy drive. On turning on the PC the light goes on and stays on - the way it does when it's looking for a floppy when there isn't one in it. It's detec... Read more

Hi,

I was trying to install Norton 360, but I got a message saying that it couldn't successfully install the components for setup, and linked me to their tech support page, which gave me a link to install Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x 86). Tried to install it, and got this message:

"The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows installer is not correctly installed."

How check if my Installer is installed properly? How do I get out of safe mode?

My computer: Dell Opti-Plex GX260, running Windows XP Home Edition SP2.

A:Getting out of Safe Mode/checking if Windows is installed properly

In Safe mode the graphics uses native drivers for the graphics which usually mean that the icons are larger than normal and look grainy. The real give away though is that the background behind the icons is black. If your desktop appears normal with its normal background then you aren't in Safe Mode. I suspect that you aren't running in Safe Mode, you would have noticed the difference.Microsoft suggest the following as potential causes of this problem. This issue may occur when both the following conditions are true: * You are using Windows XP in Normal mode. * The Windows Installer Service that is included with Windows XP is unregistered or damaged.Microsoft goes on to suggest a resolution for this, I would suggest that you copy this and print it so that you have the instruction to work from as you go through the process. This morning I saw the latest Windows 7 updates on an old computer I have (A VM running in XCP-NG) to run an old version of Confluence Wiki but that's not really important.
After installing the updates and rebooting the VM is so slow that it looks frozen at times. I restarted it in safe mode to remove the updates but when I access the Windows Updates list from Programs and Features it shows "No updates installed."
Has anyone else seen something like this? I have backups of this VM so I'm working to restore from a backup and before you ask, I know - I have to update that Win7 machine to a more recent version of Windows.
Thanks in advance and best regards.

I have an Acer laptop that came with Vista and crashed recently. It was upgraded to the trial version of Windows 7 64bit and has run great with no problems at all for a couple of weeks. Saturday morning I started it up and can no longer run normally. I can open up in normal mode but can't open anything and if anything does open, it takes many minutes but usually get the "not responding" message before then. Did the system run Vista x64 or Vista x86 previously?

This is known as an APPHANG; if the problem cannot be resolved, the app times-out, then becomes an APPCRASH (about 30 secs). The 3 symptoms...

- "Not Responding..."
- Blue circle spinning endlessly
- fading white background on IE or Windows Explorer
- Did I miss anything?

Given that you can run in SAFEMODE tells me it is probably a driver issue. I know that my Vista x64 has been updated with Firefox, although not used (IE 8 fan here!).

Then there is Adobe.... I gave up on running the Adobe Reader -- it caused constant hangs, crashes and I believe at least 1 BSOD. Why... I don't yet know.

I have recently installed a new hard drive and re-installed all my old programs.
Everything works fine except InCD packet writing utility. With InCD installed my PC gets through the POST test then hangs on the Autoexebat file before booting into Safe Mode.
If I uninstall InCD the PC boots ok and is stable.
Any ideas for a cure would be appreciated.
My OS is Win98SE. My Anti virus and spyware programs are up to date.
I have defragged the HD and generally cleaned up elsewhere.

I recently used my system image disk to restore on a new (larger) hard drive but now when I look at the hard drive from the computer view it shows my hard drive as being the same size as the old one instead of being the size of the new one. I'm not sure
I'm making much sense so I will post a picture...

Is there anyway to fix this? Does the drive really only have 286 gigs on it?

A:System Image disks installed on new hard drive show new hard drive same size as old one

You have to be logged in as Admin to perform these operations.
Go to Start, and in the Search box, type in DISK MANAGEMENT. Pick the Control Panel item "Create and format disk partitions." Once Disk Management comes up, right-click on the area of your disk and select "Extend volume..." Move it out
as far as you want, making the whole thing one drive.
If that doesn't work for you, then you can download Easeus Partition Manager Home
http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm  and create a boot CD from it that will accomplish the same thing (and more, if you want to read up on it). It's a free program and works
with 32- and 64-bit Windows. I like it and use it myself.

Just got a GTX 980 (Asus reference) and when I've got it installed it freezes at "Starting Windows" and I have to hold the power button it to restart it.

When trying to boot to safe mode, the computer hangs on classpnp.sys

I know it's not the graphics card as it boots on my friend's computer and I know it's not a huge deal with the computer as when I reinstall my EVGA GTX 660ti the computer boots fine.

Any ideas? I've made sure it's properly seated with the 2x6pin inserted correctly. I've also tried reinstalling the geforce experience drivers.

Hi,

On Sunday, my computer did its normal automatic windows update, it restarted and then began looping. I have tried everything, running my Norton Anti-virus, nothing found. I have gone into msconfig and disabled everything, it still will not start and stay on. I have gone into the registry and changed a value from 1 to 4 following directions to fix this, to no avail. Since I have run out of ideas and my laptop will not go on the Internet for some reason, I can go into Safe Mode, but not Safe Mode with Networking, I cannot back up my machine. So my question is, if there is no solution to this, how can I use my external back up in Safe Mode if it will not recognize my Maxtor 1 button back up? I am a photographer and I have not backed up my info in over 2 weeks and I have purchased a ton of iTunes over Thanksgiving that is not backed up. I need to back up my machine before I restore it if that is the only solution.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thank you,

Marina

A:How can I bacup my computer in Safe Mode. Blue Screen after Microsoft SP3 installed

Hello ,

here is a link that does a great job of doing back ups

http://www.majorgeeks.com/DriveImage_XML_d4919.html

you should beable to install it from a cd or thumb drive

it is very user friendly

but when you start to go into safe mode do you see the entry for (Last Known Configuaration That Worked )

well if your system just did updates then this would restore your system back to just befor the updates were installed and you wont loose anything

now your system / is it a store bought as in a HP/Dell/Acer ?
if it is and you installed SP3 to wich caused this loop cycle then you need a patch that you need to run befor installing (SP3) to shut certain drivers down so that you can install SP3

does your system have a AMD processor ? normally this issue happens with mobo's with these processors But its not the processors fault it is the manufacturers fault as with HP put both driver files on their systems for AMD & Intel to wich is the culprit to this issue

I have lost my link and will get it from one of my other techs for i have upgraded to a new system and having to transfer files & links to it but that link got corrupted

let me know

I'm running windows xp home edition version 2002, Service Pack 3. My display device is NVIDIA Geforce4 Ti 4400. I installed Windows XP update KB967715 and after I rebooted, once windows xp started, my display flashed about 6 times then went dark. I'm able to use the internet via safe mode. I've uninstalled this windows update and all the ones from Feb: KB958687 and KB960715. I've also reinstalled all my display drivers.

The error messages I received are:

Error code 100000ea, parameter1 82dac4f0, parameter2 834b4b10, parameter3 f79aacb4, parameter4 00000001.

I'm at a loss, the next options I can think of are re-installing Windows XP and I'd rather not if I don't have too.

Anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks!

A:Installed most recent Windows update; display no longer works except in safe mode

Hi Rachel and welcome to TSF

You didn't say, but I'm assuming that after the uninstalls the problem is still there.

Try doing a system restore to a time before the updates.

If you can boot in the safe mode and get video, then it must be something that is booting up in regular mode that is messing up the video. Before doing a re-install, look in the msconfig and see if something was installed there that might be the culprit. Under the start tab, the check boxes will let you selectively disable applications that install during normal boot. See if one of them is problematic. What each of those items do can be seen here:

http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

Do you have any red or yellow marks in the Device Manager? That almost always means a device driver problem.

If you have to resort to a re-install of XP, I would suggest a Repair Install which will leave your normal applications and data in tact. Guidance for that can be seen here:

Hope this helps,

I just installed a brand new Western Digital Hard Drive 160 gig. I partitioned it with FDISK, then formated, then did a clean install of windows XP. Everything was fine until after i finished the installation, and i tried to connect my old maxtor 20 gig so i could transfer some files over, and the computer stopped reading both hard drives. When i start it up, the computer can't boot from either drive. I've tried disconnecting each of the drives and only booting with one connected, with no luck. I also tried changing the gray strip, I can't remember what its official name is, but that didnt help either. When I go into BIOS and let it auto detect my drives, It wont recognize either of the drives.

to boot up. Here's my issue I have a HP Desk top w/ a standard 320 GB hard Drive. I bought a new Hard drive (1 TB Western Digital) so that I could move everything to the new one and use the old one as storage. I had trouble even formatting the new drive but eventually got it and successfully installed a full version of Win 7. (the old hard drive has Win Vista with Win 7 upgrade on it. When I boot up the computer I receive a message asking which WIN 7 i want to use and actually either one works. I wanted to format my old drive so that I would only have one Operating system w/ WIN 7 installed.

I tried to format it (the old drive) at the command prompt, but alas it wouldn't let me. So, I said the hell with it and opened the case and disconnected the power cord first and then I unplugged the SATA cable as well as the power cable to the hard drive. I tried to re-start the computer but now it says cannot find something, unable to read or error. So, I take it something is missing from the new WIN 7 install to my new hard drive? WOuld luv a simple fix explanation from someone waay more knowledgeable than myself. Thanks in Advance!

A:How do I get my newly installed Hard Drive (1TB) with Win 7 installed

Did you by any chance have both drives connected when you reinstalled? If so, your boot files may be on the 320 gig drive.

Try running a startup repair--you may have to run it 3 times.

I will assume that my problem is unique, i.e., that there are no previous postings on this precise topic. First of all, I am certain that I "corrupted" my C-Drive myself, when I aborted a format that was in progress. I give Bill Gates all the blame for this, however, for not making the onscreen instructions 100% unambiguous (MS needs competition that will scorch their short & curlies, which is what I hope will happen when Chrome OS arrives). You see, I had my Dell recovery CD in the DVD player while this was going on, because I had tried to reinstall using the recovery CD, and when that wouldn't work (because the recovery CD was SP2 and I had downloaded and installed SP3 in the meantime - the installation program informed me of this snag), I went to MS DOS and tried to reformat there. Fdisk is no longer available (I used to format that way with Win 3.11, 95 & 98), so I can't recall how I finally got to where I thought I wanted to be, but I think that I just wrote in "format C: /s" in the command prompt, which is what my old MS DOS 6.22 manual says, but it returned "bad command" (I believe), so I tried (I believe) "format C:". Whatever I did, it seemed to work, because it asked for a "Y/N" confirmation, which I complied with ("Y"). For a moment there, I was happy, but when I confirmed, my CD ROM drive began to whir, and that scared the heck out of me, because I feared that I was erasing the danged thin... Read more
