microsoft media player problem?

Q: microsoft media player problem?

I can't play any type of file. i even upgraded to the newest one. each time i open up some file is say that i performed an illegal operation and closed it. i have win 98. thank you.

Preferred Solution: microsoft media player problem?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When the error pops up, click Details then copy/paste the contents. Also, which version of Windows and Media Player are you using?

Why do mpg files play so much better and smoother on RP8 than they do in MMP7? I don't know what it is, but whenever I play a mpg video with MMp7 I get chopy frame rates (normal and full-screen mode)and when play it with RP8 I get smooth playback...
Any thoughts on how to fix or maybe boost perfomance for MMp7?

Do you have BlackIce Defender installed, if so, it could be interfering.

Otherwise, take a look at this link for more FAQs on Windows Media Player 7.

If anyone knows how to get windows media player 9 to run, I would appreciate the advice. I have version I downloaded Media Player 9 (for Windows 98 SE) and went through the installation process, but when completed with the install, a dialog box opens up saying "Microsoft Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." The error signature is as follows:

AppName: wmplayer.exe AppVer: ModName: oleaut32.dll
ModVer: 2.40.4518.0 Offset: 0006ac21

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling to no avail. I cannot update my current version (6) from its update feature( it says there is no update available , when I tried), but version 6 still works...only I have to go into the program file where it is and open it there.

A:"Microsoft Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close"

I would recommend getting winamp from www.winamp.com.

My Norton virus warning keeps coming up telling me that I have a trojan horse found under C:\Programfiles\windowsmediaplayer\iedll.exe

They action taken was none

I submited the files to Norton and they emailed me back to tell me that YES I did have a trojan horse and in their words "all are non-repairable threats"

I sent the files to a safe place and removed them (I think).

Now when I re-started my computer and ran Norton it kept running and running (11 hours 2,741,897 files). I decided to stop virus scan after the 11th hour. What in the world is going on with this computer!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Man, I am bumming one day my media player was fine the next no sound!
Things I have done. Checked all cables wires speakers ...All work, checked all settings on computer (that I know about) and turned volume on highest level. I have removed and reloaded the drivers on my computer. I have downloaded microsoft media player 10 version. I have had some vidio clips off of CNN play with sound but nothing from my music. I am a drummer and I need to use this computer to practice with HELP!

A:No sound from microsoft media player on XP

Greeting Zephead, and Welcome to TSF.

Please try these steps in order....

Right click on the Volume Control in the System Tray [near the clock]..If you don't have the Volume Control icon in the taskbar, do this..
Go Control Panel > Sound and Audio Devices > tick the box 'Place Volume icon in the taskbar' > Apply > OK.
Now: Open Volume Control > Options > Properties > Playback > scroll down and make sure that all of the following are ticked: Volume Control; Wave; SW Synth; Front; CD Player; Line-In; and, 'microphone'. Now click Recording, and tick the following: Stereo Mix; CD Player; Line-In ; Microphone. Now click Playback again > OK.
Back to Options > Advanced > there should now be an 'Advanced button on the Microphone, click it > tick the box ' 1 Mic Boost' Close, and exit out of Volume Control.

Now right click on the System Tray Icon again > Adjust Audio Properties > at the bottom next to Speaker Volume, click Advanced and set the type of speakers you have from the drop down box > OK. Now click on Speaker Volume and make sure that the volume is not turned down >OK.

Now go Voice > Test Hardware, and the Test wizard will run you through a test to see that everything is [hopefully] working, and when your done > OK >OK.

As I said hopefully you should now have sound, but if not post back and we'll scratch our heads again.

While Windows Media Player always had its flaws, I simply can't understand why would Microsoft make it worse with each version. WMP10 was a very decent player, at least for music because WMP has never been good for video. Then version 11 changed some things in the GUI I didn't like too much, but it was still OK. But WMP12 is total garbage!! In previous version you had a "hue" slider that you could use to make the player any color you wanted. In WMP12 that slider doesn't exist, and even worse, when in library mode we are stuck with a horrendous baby blue color all over the interface, that to this day I don't know how to change even with a resource hack. I don't get how can this hideous thing come from the same company that creates such a beautiful visual interface in Windows Media Center. If anybody knows how to change the background in library mode I beg you, please post and let me know how. Other thing missing? The Advanced Tag Editor. A very useful feature that every single music player that dares call itself that must have. Who the ____ at Microsoft came up with the idea to remove the Advanced Tag Editor, and who the ____ approved that decision? They should be fired. I will stop using this player mainly because of this reason. I used WMP11 to transfer albums to my MP3 player because when I use Winamp it transfers the files in the wrong order. But in WMP11 I just had to right click on an album cover and selet "Add to sync list", or "Add to burn li... Read more

We all know of it, we all hardly use it in deference to itunes, VLC, and the sorts. But should it remain with us?

I was thinking about this feature that is just sucky. I never use it other than to play media files, and I never use the navigation of it because it's just terrible. It also looks terrible.

Then I wondered about the future of Windows Media Center and the dying Zune Software. What about consolidating media players into a commanding, Windows Media CENTER, center as in, an actual CENTER of media playing and not just one of many media playing programs that is used.

Think of it, all the features of all players come together in one, awesome player. The modern, immersive, metro design of Zune and Zune Marketplace, the DVR feature of WMC and integration with Xbox, and the lightweightness of WMP together. That way, we don't need to have so many players in one OS. And of course, it could get the same codec treatment as VLC or a potential addon codec treatment if the user needs such. It could have better device media management as well.

Also, if Microsoft could without apple suing them, they could pull a middle finger on them and have ipods and iphones being able to sync up and be able to be managed without itunes. Windows Media Center could also have access to the current Zune Marketplace and have the same subscription service applied to iDevices and Windows Phones and other digital players. One awesome, media player.

What do you guys think?

A:Should Microsoft kill off Windows Media Player

I personally say yes as I almost never touch it. But as an adjunct to an OS, it should be there I think. I also see most friends use it widely..

Thank You Everyone

A:Microsoft Media Player won't Recognize my downloaded MP4 Video

For saving the videos on sites I would suggest Internet Download Manager. Directly type internetdownloadmanager.com in your browser or download from filehippo.
The initial days of usage will be difficult though as it tries to grab everything on the page for download.
Adding custom filters take time, of course.
But once you are set it will be very easy.
Also Update your codecs. I prefer and suggest K-Lite Mega Codec Pack.
Hope this should fix your problem.

Hi, welcome to TSG.

Post a HiJackThis log and it will show what programs run at startup.

Go to this site http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/hijackthis.php?page=download.

Click on 'Download HijackThis Installer'.

*Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop, or to the location where you normally download.
*Double-click on HJTInstall.exe.
*Click on Install.
*By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
*Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
*Click on the 'Do a system scan and save a logfile button'. It will scan and the log will open in notepad.
*Click Save to save the log file.
*Click on 'Edit > Select All' then click on 'Edit > Copy' (or Ctrl-C) to copy the entire contents of the log.
*Come back to this thread and Paste (or Ctrl-V) the log in your next reply.

*DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Windows Vista

I like to download videos/trailers on the internet.

My default player is Microsoft Windows Media Player.

I would go to websites to watch videos. When I would click a link for the video (usually a WMV file), my Microsoft Windows Media Player would open up, then a few seconds after buffering, the video would start to play. While the video was playing, I could click to go forward, the video would pause (buffering), then play again. Basically, the video was streaming off of the internet.

I found a AVI file, but when I would play it, there was audio, but no video. So I downloaded an AVI player (GOM Media Player, http://download.cnet.com/GOM-Media-P...html?tag=mncol). I installed this new player to watch AVI videos. After I intalled the program, all of my WMV videos on my computer were using the new player. I clicked on a WMV file (from my computer) and made my Microsoft Windows Media Player be the default video player for WMV files and the GOM Media Player for my AVI files.

Then the problem started........

Now when I go to websites with links for streaming WMV files, the entire file downloads, then the media player opens up to play the video. I can't stream videos anymore.

Here is the website that I would go to to play/stream wmv files....... http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/media_movies.htm

I tried the help that came with the Microsoft Windows Media Player, but I couldn't figure it out. I wanted to uninstall the player ... Read more

I have a problem opening any media file in any of the Media Players viz., RealOne Player build or my Windows Media Player 10.
Whenever I open the above mentioned Media Players on my system, their interface opens up and after I open and select any media (usually audio) file, the player keeps on connecting to the file and takes more than 1 minute and above in opening and playing any valid and good media file, may it be a .wma or .mp3 audio file.

Having a weird problem with WMP. Over the past few days the player will suddenly start the same instrumental tune without prompt of any kind, play for about 6-7 minutes then fade out and stop only to repeat the same at some later time. I use Skype VOIP for business calls to the USA several times each day, sometimes but not always the tune will start, it drowns out my hearing of the other person but has no effect on reception at their end, they hear nothing but my voice. I doubt that it's a Skype issue, it happens if I'm on the phone (headset) on. I've done many scans such as CCcleaner, Ad Aware, Spybot, I use Nod32 anti virus, I've downloaded and scanned with other malware/ spyware/ root kit scanners but all show nothing. When the music is playing the small, white stop square in WMP grays and won't work, exiting and muting don't stop it, task manager shows nothing in applications or processes unusual. Don't know where else to look, anyone have any suggestions/

I recently downloaded Windows Media Player 11 and have since discovered that I can no longer hear music that is embedded on web site pages. What is REALLY interesting about this problem is that if I open the web site page, then click on a music file on my computer the media player plays the music that is on the web page NOT the music I clicked on in my computer....if I close the web page while the music is playing it reverts to playing the music on my computer that I clicked on. Weird, uh???

Can someone please help me solve this problem so that I may hear music on web pages again?

Thank you for your anticipated help.

A:Media Player 11 Problem

I wonder if your issue with Windows Media Player 11 not playing sound might be related to discussion in this thread:

where Windows Media Player 11 does not appear to play mono sound for some of us. When the sound is played through another application, it plays fine.

The problem, in my case, is not embedded or not, but mono sound or not. CNN video files, no longer play sound for me since installing windows media player 11. Here is an example:
http://bowendirectory.com/?p=7&ID=261&d=1 (have to click play button to start)

If you can hear sound in the above example, but not in www.cnn.com video files, we may have the same issue.

A:Problem With Media Player

Your post does not state what OS you are using.. so there could be a rights issue, a corrupt MP, or a host of other things. What is it that you are trying to play, or is it ANYTHING? Since I only have XP, I can only reference that (no Vista yet). Have you checked your Event Viewer (Control Panel-Adminitrative Tools-Event Viewer). Look for Media Player errors in System, then Application and even Internet Explorer (that could be the problem). Some times there are error codes you can go right to MS to look up on their site. You can also go directly to their help site, where there are millions of posts.. you could be awhile : http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsme...ng=en&cr=US

is it possible to put the install disc for windows 7 into pc and just reinstall media player only , so that everything else is left alone.
