Software to detect whether I am part of botnet...

Q: Software to detect whether I am part of botnet...

I have BidDefender 2010 and MalwareBytes installed.

Both clean scans.

Do they search for bot activity, though?

If not, could someone recommend software specifically for this? Windows 7, 64-bit.

I tried R U Botted from TrendMicro, but that doesn't work on 64-bit.

Preferred Solution: Software to detect whether I am part of botnet...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Software to detect whether I am part of botnet...

You can use BotHunter : http://www.bothunter.net/Though I think BitDefender can effectively protect you from bots of all kinds.

Any way to tell?

If I have an infected computer on my local lan, will it infect other computers on the local lan?

I just recently cleared off some type of awful malware on an older slow computer and was easy to tell it had issues.
But how about a fast quad core PC, it always seems to work just fine.

A:How do I know my PC is not part of a botnet?

One computer might infect other computers - it depends on lots of variables.

You cannot know if a computer is free from infections. You can only know that no infections were detected during various scans. We know that some infections go undetected for years (even 10 years). We don't know how many infections are in the wild - but are not yet detected.

A well written root kit can hide itself from scanners and it can hide its network traffic from monitoring tools. Monitoring network traffic using a computer that is running a unix/linux flavor is one way to detect bot-like traffic. Using a service like OpenDNS is another way to detect bot-like network traffic - except, OpenDNS can only detect certain types of botnet activity.

Hi,

Just recently my computer has been acting weird, such as not letting me use the mouse or type, google refusing to let me access certain pages, slower than usual and just in general suspicious behaviour. I suspect it might have been hacked by a botnet, but a malwarebytes, super anti-spyware and avg scan all came back with nothing?

I have attatched a hijackthis log, can anyone help?

My wife and I got kicked offline last night on our PCs but the network never went down. I power cycled modem/router and we were back on. Once back online, wife and I had trouble resolving common dns(s) such as msn, google, yahoo, etc and most other sites as well. The sites would 404 or simply fail to load, then if you hit refresh enough times they would load with no pictures, then another refresh would get you a normal page...but clicking any links or trying any other domains would end up 404. Son came in and said he couldn't go anywhere. Since it was late I figured ISP was doing maintenance and we went to bed.

Problem was intermittent throughout the day today, bad this morn, then good all day then bad again when son got home and turned on PC (hindsight). Called ISP and they said no problems on their end (in retrospect they clearly didn't check our traffic as you will see in a minute). Suddenly internet was fast again with no 404s... son came in and said he was running avast boot scan. Soon as scan stopped (avast found nothing) net went to crap again.

Unplugged his PC from lan and ran RKILL (clean), MBAM (clean), GMER (clean), aswMBR (clean), and finally Combofix (yes I know you arent supposed to if you are going to come here for assistance, but I never imagined I'd be here on what 'appeared' to be a clean system judging from the previous 6 tool reports).

Trend Micro has released a beta of RUBotted, a little program that watches for incoming bot related traffic.
RUBotted monitors for remote command and control (C&C) commands sent from a bot-herder to control your computer. Additionally, RUBotted watches for an array of potentially malicious bot-related activities, including mass mailing - a common activity performed by a bot-infected computer.

Just wondering if anyone uses this? Is this really needed? Should something like this be part of your security software?

Hello,
specs I remember:
core2 e6600
4GB DDR2 Ram (i think its DDR2)
nvidia 8800GTX 512MB
vista x32

This is more a question about HOW to diagnose a problem rather than expect you guys to tell me what is wrong

Today, I thought I was having a graphics card problem because in the middle of a game, the screen glitched out with multi-colored boxes all over and the system was unresponsive. a CTL+ALT+DEL resulted in a high speed flicker of the monitor.

After booting normally and having the same issue at the desktop, I tried safe mode and thought I was ok. a few minutes later I was having pink lines drawn across the screen.

So I guess it isn't just the graphics card. But I am not sure where to begin in finding out what part is causing the problem.

while the computer was still on I briefly looked through the event monitor but could not find anything (I also am not totally sure what I am even looking for)

Short of taking the PC into a shop, Is there a safe way to find out what part is causing all the headaches? Do I remove parts one-by-one and power back on? I'm not sure what parts could even cause screen problems beside the video card. and I don't have a spare MB or anything to swap out.

thanks guys.

Been getting these BSODs for the whole time since active usage.

A:Win 7 x64 BSOD - I know it's software but which part?

Lets take a look.

Code:
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (d1)
An attempt was made to access a pageable (or completely invalid) address at an
interrupt request level (IRQL) that is too high. This is usually
caused by drivers using improper addresses.
If kernel debugger is available get stack backtrace.
Arguments:
Arg1: 0000000006f77320, memory referenced
Arg2: 0000000000000002, IRQL
Arg3: 0000000000000000, value 0 = read operation, 1 = write operation
Arg4: fffff880058d9b3d, address which referenced memory
So we tried to read invalid/pageable memory at an IRQL of two which is an illegal operation that will always result in a bugcheck.
Whether the memory was pageable or invalid is still unknown as the dump file hasn't saved that information.

I had a desktop with WinXP that my Lexmark X1270 all-in-one printer was hooked up to. I have since got rid of that pc and got a laptop with Vista (I know nobody likes it, but it appeared that that's the only choice now.) that I hooked my printer up to. While it does print, a part of it is missing. It just so happens to be a crucial part to me. The All-In-One center isn't on my pc (I've tried reinstalling a couple times and updating driver/software at Lexmark's site), that being the part where you can copy and scan things. Anyone able to help?

A:Part of printer's software missing?

Hi,

I like Vista for a start - I haven't had to do a fresh install once yet!

This may sound a cop out but have you asked Lexmark if this is a common issue? - you never know they may even help.

Another shot is, are you installing it as an administrator? i.e right-click on the setup.exe and Run as Administrator.

The screen darkens, but there is nothing there, and I have to go into task manager to regain access. I can't even do a system restore, or run things as an administrator (as suggested in previous postings) because they all seek permission for me to continue and I end up right back at the same dilemma...

Any ideas? I'm just stumped.

I'm grasping at straws right now, I have not been able to find anything even remotely like this, and there are no response to me earlier post, the one mentioned above.

Is it possible that there is an install that is still trying to work, in the background? I have kill the process on some of the installations that appear to hang. Could the installer be hung in the middle of some other installation?

If so, any ideas how I would kill it?

Thanks,

I think (the jury is still out on this) I may have fixed the problem.

I was having a problem where I could not get the properties of a folder, not the file(s) but folder, would not display. Searching the web I found a solution (if you are interested in the solution look in this forum, for one of my posts, it was a problem with file folder properties. In a nutshell I had to get a service World Wide Web Publishing to start. Since fixing this, every one of my installs have completed as one would thin they should.

when I wanted to buy a new laptop, I was told, I would have to buy all new software since Vista won't run most of the older programs, especially 64-bit need apparently different drivers.
I bought a used laptop with XP therefore. I like the programs I bought and can't afford to update constantly when Windows changes/

I guess you will have to contact the software vendor.

Can you look thru my HJT log? Since this morning, I was unable to run my AOL 9.0 software at all. I have been working from home all week and have been using AOL the whole time. I am able to access the internet via IE7. I am not sure if I somehow picked up some virus/malware overnight...I have uninstalled and reinstalled AOL and it still won't find the TCP/IP. Initially, it wouldn't detect the broadband connection. After the reinstall, it lists a broadband connection, but won't go past the TCP/IP search to connect.

One of the last things that I did last night was update the Microsoft Activesync software to 4.2 from 4.1. Other than that, I haven't changed anything drastically on the system.

Just before I wrote this post, I tried accessing AOL via my laptop and it worked fine. It runs the same software, so that looks like a local issue with my desktop.

Thanks.

We had a discussion at a business networking meeting this morning on the ethics of employers installing software to "spy" on employees emails, chat sessions, web sites visited, etc. One of our vendors said that he feels his employer is "watching" the employees web usage. Is there a way to scan his laptop, or network to see if there is some type of application running that is recording his internet activity?

A:Detect Employer Installed Spy Software?

Just have him ask his boss. They will have a contract or something writeen that he signed saying that the employer may do this. Also a virus or spyware search, firewall log or specialized tool may detect these things.

Hi,

One of my harddisks starts making clicking-noise loudly, meaning that it will break soon.

The problem is, I have 6 harddisks inside my PC. I can't figure out which one is making the noise. I tried to listen closely to each HD, but still can't find it.

So the question is: is there any software that could "predict" future hardisk failure?

Thanks,

A:What's a good software to detect possible HD failure?

There are all kinds of different softwares available for testing hard drives. It depends on the maker of your HDD as to which is best. Have a look at this excellent thread:

http://www.techspot.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7602

You'll have to test one HDD at a time.

Hello,
First of all I am not sure if this is the correct forum. I have a little A+ background and am working on a friends computer. They are running Win98 SE and the computer appears to be free of viruses and sypware. I have tried to install Netscape internet and People PC. The modem works and even tried a new US Robotics 56k v.92 modem both with line and phone jacks. One phone cord runs from wall to line on modem and the other cord runs from phone on modem to the telephone. There is a dialtone and the modem is listed in Device Manager with no problems. The telephone can be used with no problem.

When installing the Netscape software there is a dialogue box in the background with the correct modem listed. In the foreground a dialogue box searches for the type of connection- either phone line, cable modem, dsl, etc. You can hear the modem dialing, but After so many seconds a box pops up stating "operational modem could not be found.
modem in use or it is not operational. Please reboot and try again."

1) I have un-installed and re-installed the modem software for both of the working modems that I tried.

2) I have un-installed and re-installed the dial-up adapter.

3) Attached new telephone cords to the modem

4) Found info on the net about the unimdm.tsp file and extracted a copy from Win98 CD to the system folder. And ran the program Tapiini.exe to create a new telephon.ini file.

5) There are no AOL adapters installed

6) No fax machine hooked up. Only one phone ... Read more

So, apparently my IP is listed in several of the spam detection Blacklists.

A:Best software to detect and remove Kelihos spambot?

Hello,Now that you have posted a malware log here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/613943/possible-spambot-on-my-pc-that-keeps-on-getting-my-ip-blacklisted/ you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a MRT Team member, nor should you ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show in the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. From this point on the MRT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean. Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the MRT Team members are EXTREMELY busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the MRT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another MRT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond. Please be pa... Read more

Reset the drive. Go to the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the entry for the drive and then LEFT click "Uninstall". Restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the drive. This fixes a lot of flakey problems and any device Windows corruption. First step in resolving problems such as yours.

Hello:

I have a Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bits PC and the LifeCam software does not detect the webcam.

Just purchased a Microsoft LifeCam VX-800 webcam.

I have tried several "solutions" with no luck including the ones from the Microsoft website.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929087/en-us

I also tried the following with no luck:

----------------------------------------------
Try the following:

Disconnect and reconnect the LifeCam.
Disconnect other unused USB devices.
Use a different USB port on the computer. If you can, connect to a USB 2.0 port.
If you are using a USB hub, unplug the LifeCam from the hub and plug it directly into your computer.
Restart your computer.
Uninstall, and then reinstall the LifeCam software from www.microsoft.com/hardware.

---------------------------------------------

Other webcam applications includying Windows Live Messenger detect the camera and can use it with no problems.

Orb can stream the camera to my ipod touch as well with no problems.

The only problem is with the LifeCam software.

This is so frustrating. I can't believe I'm having a hard time with a simple piece of plug and play hardware.

Anyone knows what may be going wrong?

Thanks

I don't quite understand what the problem is here, i.e., what is it that you are trying to do with the webcam that won't work?

I'm running Vista Ultimate 64x. Today, I uninstalled Panda AntiVirus and installed 360 Total Security. However, Windows Security Center is telling me that it can't find any antivirus software although 360 is one of the programs that it recommends (which I discovered via the Find a Program button in WSC). WSC provides an option for me to monitor antivirus programs myself, but it should detect 360, right? Any suggestions? Thanks.

A:Vista can't detect my antivirus software (360 Total Security)

Symantec/Norton products are not recognized by Vista or Windows 7 until you do a Live Update for 360. This has been an issue from the very beginning with Microsoft and Symantec and is still not fixed.
We do not suggest using any paid software like Symantec, Norton, McAfee etc the free programs work better then they do. We suggest uninstalling 360 and using the free Microsoft Security Essentials

Hi,

I am having a strange problem on my laptop (Win XP). When I do google searches and click on any of the results they get redirected to random sites. I also get Just In Time debugging messages which when I try to debug show that there is an error with some script on a random website that isn't even open in my browser.

However, strangely none of this happen when I am logged into my company's network via a VPN connection.

I have run scans with eTrust ITM (which is what was originally on my laptop), Spybot S&D, Malwarebytes Anti Malware, AdAware, Panda Cloud, AVG in safe modes where available and yet have found nothing. One thing that I am suspicious about is the ctfmon.exe process and entry in HJT log which I don't think I had before. So I tried killing the ctfmon.exe process manually and sure enough the redirects stop. However, after a few minutes I start getting them again although I don't see ctfmon.exe being spwaned again.

Attached is my HJT log.

I bought a new Microsoft LifeCam HD-3000 webcam (model no 1492, blue package box as opposed to the previous red box and this one indicates it's Windows 10 compatible) and installed the latest available LifeCam program/driver v3.6. However, when running the
LifeCam program, it is not detecting a camera. I couldn't open the LifeCam dashboard probably because the camera is not detected. In Device Manager, driver is installed properly under Imagaing device. I use another webcam program, the webcam is detected properly.
I installed more than 10 of this webcams (i.e. the red box) and never have any issue with camera not detected in the LifeCam software. Is there any fix for this? Re-installing the program/driver didn't help.

Hi,
I would like to be able to add a media card reader to my 3010MT Optiplex Dell PC system. I noticed some machines were equipped with one 5.25" bay sharing a slim optical drive and media card reader in one bay.

What options do I have, do I have to change out my current optical drive or can I buy a media card reader that will fit with correct caddy etc in my current available 5.25" space below my optical drive.?

Basically wanted part numbers for 19 in 1 mcr for my 3010MT. Also, would a generic 5.25 device work?

However, if I want to connect to a slingbox to my tv upstairs which requires a hard wired ethernet connection, what are my options?
