I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

If it's the powerup password, you'll need to place a voice phone call to Dell -- be prepared to verify your ownership details and with a credit card (the call post-warranty as a system this old must be, is not free of charge).

Over the last 2 days I have been having a problem as indicated in the title of this post. The fault has rectified itself 3 times, but again today, it is back to "battery plugged in, not charging." As I am running the laptop (Windows Vista Home Premium; 32 bit) on the adapter without problems, I assume that the adapter itself may not be faulty.
I also have a Dell Inspiron 630M laptop running Windows 7.  Can I safely use that adapter with the Vista laptop, without causing damage to the Vista ?  If it is safe to do so, and the battery on the Vista starts charging, then it would indicate that the Vista adapter/charger has some kind of fault.
Hoping someone can give me some guidance. Thanks.

A:Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop. Battery plugged in not charging. Can I use adapter from a Dell Inspiron 630M laptop ?

If the adapter has the same plug and the same or higher power rating, you can swap them.
Check to see whether the 1545 recognizes the AC adapter or whether it shows unknown (F2 at powerup).  If it shows unknown with two different adapters, you have a bad power jack or a bad mainboard.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop.  Recently, I bought a Dell Ultrasharp monitor U2412M to attach to my laptop to have an ergonomic home office.   My knowledge of computers/hardware is pretty... rudimentary.
24"1920 x 1200Nice adjustable stand1x DVI-D port, 1x display port, 1x VGA port, 1x USB 2.0 upstream port, 4x USB downstream ports
I use my computer for writing documents, internet surfing, and rarely for watching tv.  Eventually, I will buy a lighter and newer laptop, but probably not for a year or two.
I think I bought the wrong monitor....  I was hoping to buy something to use now, that will last, and that will work with any future laptop I buy.
My monitor just arrived.  I connected it to my laptop with the VGA cable (my laptop doesn't have DPI or HDMI input).  It worked, but the picture didn't look.... very good.
It is my understanding that VGA connections are the worst quality.  Can I use an ?adapter to connect to the VGA cable to access the DVI-D port on the monitor?  Or is this the best I can get?  I'm not even sure what ?video cards are, or whether I need one of these.
I also looked up the specs on my old laptop and it says the specs of my laptop screen are
1366 x 768 pixel
So is this the limit of what an attached monitor can be?

Any input appreciated.  Thanks.

Can I install WinXP Pro from older Dell laptop on to new Dell laptop?

I am using a Dell Inspiron 8200 right now and in order to save some money on my new Dell laptop, I'd like to order Home or MediaCenter with the new computer and then install WinXP Pro myself instead of paying the extra $119 to have them do it. My laptop screen has gone completely black. I opened my laptop to sign on and nothing. I can hear the computer starting up, but nothing ever comes up on the screen. What can I do to fix this? thanks!

A:Dell Laptop Inspiron 1545

I'm guessing what actually happened is the backlight in the display went out. So take a flashlight and kind of point it at the display, then look very closely at it to see if you can see the Windows screen there. It will be very faint, so take a few minutes.

If you that is the case, there's a chance that you can get away with just a new inverter board for the display, which would be great because it's cheap. Otherwise, you're looking at a new display panel.

Hello Sefket,My hard drive crashed it seems like. It made random sounds like you're at a Carnival and something in blue came up for tests. That doesn't sound good. It would make sense to first run the built in Dell Diagnostics. Restart the computer. When the DELL? logo appears, press <F12> immediately.Select Diagnostics from the boot menu and press <Enter>.I don't know what the menu looks like as I don't own a Dell, but run all hardware diagnostics, especially hard drive and report any errors. Here is your Dell Manual for reference: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins1545/en/SG/F123HA01MR.pdf. I tried everything I could to turn the WIFI back on my Dell Inspiron LAPTOP 1545 after I recently did modification on my symantec antivirus, but failed. So far, these are the steps I performed in trying to turn on the WIFI.
1. There's no "ON and Off "switch.
2. Pressed "FN" and F2.
3. Start>Control Panel>Network Connections>find the WIFI Adapter>Right Click>Enable.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

A:How to turn on WIFI on Dell Laptop Inspriron 1545?

Hi Art,
Try pressing only F2 key which enables/disables the wireless on the computer.
As you've mentioned that you did some modification on the Antivirus. You may try to perform System Restore and see if it works. Press and hold the Windows key and press 'R' key. This will open the run window -> Type 'rstrui' without the parenthesis, click on 'Ok' -> This will open the System Restore window. Follow the on-screen instructions to restore your computer to an earlier date. Please refer Here for more information.
Hope this helps.

The technician I asked to remove Vista from the Inspiron 1545 and install Windows 10 in its place informs me that this is not possible because some item is missing from the hard disk. Is this correct?

I recently came into possession of a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop which refuses to boot the installed operating system, Windows Vista. When the laptop is powered up, it displays the Dell logo as well as a loading bar and options to open the BIOS settings and the boot options. After a few moments, it changes to a black screen with a single flashing underscore in the top corner. This then disappears and is replaced with a screen that states 'Windows Error Recovery'.

"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. If Windows files have been damaged or configured incorrectly, Startup Repair can help diagnose and fix the problem. If power was interrupted during startup, Choose Start Windows Normally."

It then goes on to list Launch Startup Repair (recommended) and Start Windows Normally. However, when the Startup Repair option is chosen the screen goes dark for a short moment and occasionally a loading bar appears across the bottom. Quickly this vanishes and the Windows Error Recovery screen turns up again. No matter how many times this is selected, the same thing happens. When Start Windows Normally is chosen, on the other hand, the entire boot process is restarted from the beginning, as though nothing had happened, and the laptop once again sticks on the Windows Error Recovery screen.

As of writing this post, I am unaware what the actual problem is. I have run a series of diagnostic tests on the system through the boot optio... Read more

I am a property manager who manages some self-storage facilities. We recently had a few spaces go to auction and as a result the auction winners threw stuff they didn't want into the dumpster. I was emptying the trash from the office and noticed that someone had thrown a few laptops into the dumpster. As a tech nerd, I climbed into the dumpster and pulled the laptops from the garbage.
One of the laptops was a Dell laptop. I cleaned it up a bit and used one of my Dell laptop chargers to try and charge the battery overnight. Then, I hit the power button and hoped..... nada. Opened the back panel and immediately saw that it had no hard drive.... but the memory was still installed as well as the WIFI adapter. The screen was cracked but I had hope that it might still be usable once I could actually get the laptop to boot.
So, I pulled out one of my old SATA laptop hard drives, re-formatted it and installed it in the laptop.
Hit the power button and saw that I could not install Win10 from the USB port since the laptop had an admin password installed and of course, I had no idea what it was. So, I called Dell and gave them all the laptop info and my personal info and they gave me a code to enter which was supposed to disable or erase the unknown admin password and allow me to change the boot options to include the usb port.
The code does not work. The dell rep mentioned something about hitting the Shift and Control keys while I hit the enter key but that still doesn't... Read more

My company corporate office sent me a used Dell D600 this week. I love the centrino techonlogy and it's much lighter and faster than my own personal HP Pavilion workhorse. My problem is that the laptop is set up with user and administrator rights. This stinks. I can't download any applications, update software, even change the clock on the thing.

I wont have to return the laptop until I leave the job anyway, so I want to be able to load Firefox, Java, GTA, etc, for when I travel with it. Is there a way to crack the password and log on as an Administrator so I have permissions to change things and load programs, or alternately, can I dump the whole thing, reload XP and start over? I have the XP disk from my old HP....

I am not so good with computers, but it would be a shame to travel for work as much as I do and be stuck in a hotel in Billings playing minesweeper.....

hi everyone
dell 1545 inspiron, 3-4yrs old, sata 250gb hd, windows 7 home premium, 64 bit

i've been reading all the hdd helps you all posted re the above error code and tried most things suggested but still not up and running.

first error code 2000-0142 self test unsuccessful status 71, then 200-0146 which i presume is saying it still has previous errors.

originally only got the screen with start windows normally and repair fix (recommended) - both options just flip back to this screen.
inserted original cd, changed load up to cd/dvd, cd opened install windows or repair/fix, chose repair/fix, over 24hrs later it came up with restart your computer, i did but forgot it was still set to load up from cd first, let it start up again, changed the bios to load from internal hdd, it is still reverting to the black screen again with start windows normally or repair/fix again. so obviously not fixed the errors.

i have tried f8 but computer still wont load up properly in any form of safe modes or any other option it gave.

i read about the chkdsk and chkdsk/r etc but not sure where this is to be entered, guess at c:/ but cant get the prompt to type that in.
Ive ordered a sata usb docking station just in case as im using my little girls laptop and hoping if i cant fix my laptop then i might be able to get the info off old hdd - especially all my accounts on sage plus photos. A:dell 1545 laptop hdd error code 2000-0142

According to the Dell error code list, the 0142 is "Drive Self Test Failed" and the 0146 is just the log has previous errors. In most cases (all that I've seen) the 0142 says the drive is defective and must be replaced.

If you backed up to a partition on that drive, the backup may be gone too. NEVER backup to a partition on the same drive. If the drive fails usually the backup is gone too.

I have a problem with my Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop.
When I put a CD in the drive, it makes a loud noise and the laptop vibrates. However, this only happens when I put a CD-RW disc in the drive. When I put another CD in, such as an audio CD, it doesn't make this noise.
Does this suggest the CD/DVD drive needs replacing?

A:Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop - CD/DVD Drive loud noise

You can try other types of media in the drive to see if the noise remains. At the link below is an option to run the diagnostics on the drive to see if it is faulty. You must have a disk in the drive to perform the diagnostics.  Also, at the the link below under the drivers section are  cd/dvd firmware downloads. To determine which drive you have in the computer you can click on the configuration tab on the site or input your system service tag. This will show you the hardware information for your computer. You can then choose to download and install the firmware. I cannot verify that updating the firmware will resolve the noise issue.  If you determine that the drive is faulty and you want to replace it. You can call the the dell spare parts dept. A:Older Dell desk top forgot password to enter system

Most Dell desktop systems have a jumper on the mainboard that clears the password (power off, remove jumper, power on, power off and replace the jumper).   On just about every Dell made in the last 15+ years it's the only jumper on the mainboard -  if you need more information, we'll need to know what model system you have.

If there is one, you need to buy the Windows XP installation disc and reprogram your computer.

Hi guys,

Dell Laptop
Windows 7 64bit
4Gb Ram
Intel Core 2 Duo

Personal computer this time - an irregular BSOD, about once a month, always caused by ntoskrnl.exe - often when hibernating, but sometimes in the middle of something.

Kept windows up-to-date as far as I know!

Any suggestions much appreciated!

A:irregular BSOD on older Dell Laptop.

Since this is a problem with a Windows 7 system, not a Windows 8 either repost on the Windows 7 forum or better yet post on the Dell community users forum, Laptop section, for help.

How to fix Dell Inspiron 1545 Laptop so it connects to wireless internet and via cable (Virgin Media Router)?
Hi all, please help!I have not been able to connect to the internet on my home WIFI network/via cable or the WIFI at work since Monday evening I have restarted my laptop and reset the "D Link D1-524 High Speed Router" several times - separately and simultaneously according to my laptop and Virgin Media's instructions over the phone. Virgin Media said that it was a problem with my laptop as my IP address starts with "165.254"...as of last night it started "192.". I have also called Dell who have not helped at all.Are there any drivers I can download from the Dell website to fix this issue or another safe program I can download? I want to download drivers or programs to a USB and transfer the files to my laptop...as I have no internet access. My computer wireless menu states the following:Unidentified NetworkNo Internet AccessThen it shows a list of NetworksMy Network - Connected/Limited AccessPlease help I want to sort this out asap! Thanks!

The bold print makes it harder to read and sometime people do not respond to these posts.
Did you power off your ISP modem/router and your wireless router(if any) for 30 seconds. Power on the ISP modem router. Wait 15 seconds, then power on your wireless router(if any)
start, all programs, accessories, right click on cammand prompt, left click run as administrator. Type
ipconfig /release          (space between the g and /)
Restart your computer. Try to connect. What happens?
Does your wireless router have these Recommended Wireless Router Settings, I use channel 11?
What operating system are you using?

Was given a Dell Optiplex 360 that I found out after getting a nasty virus had a bootleg XP OS
I also did not have any disks with it. I had older disks for a Dell 4600 that I used to wipeout the hard drive and install the new OS. Everything works fine except that I can not load any of the drivers from the second disk, (it was a 3 disk series)
thus at least at this point not able to connect with my cable internet. Cable people told me I needed the drivers.Any suggestions or can it just not be done.
Thanks, Al

A:Loading Older Dell OS To Newer Dell Computer

You will have to go to the dell website look under support and then drivers and downloads for your model of computer. If you use the service tag number on the computer it will make sure you get the correct ones you need. For future reference so you wont have this hassle again burn all of the drivers to a cd so you will be all set the next time.

Not sure if this is in the right category or not but here goes. The computer has been working fine until about 1/2 hour ago. The monitor goes VERY dim like in hibernation but will not 'relight'. If you reboot it comes on and works properly for about 5 minutes then goes dim again. The only way to get it back is to reboot. needless to say, this is a pretty useless way to have a computer. I appreciate your help.

I have an old Dell laptop with Windows 98. A friend's son needs something to practice keyboarding on so I thought I would let them have this old laptop if the word processing software was loaded. I have MS Works Suite 2006 which came with Word 2002. It loaded fine but says it has to be registered or will only work 40 more times. The laptop has never been connected to the internet and I don't want to figure that out now (this boy will NOT be connecting to the net at their home so no point). Unless there's no other way to get this to work. Any suggestions? Thanks - Lynn

A:Registering older Works Suite 2006 on Win98 Dell laptop

If he just needs to practice typing, he doesn't need a full Works suite. Abiword version 2.4.6 works on Windows 98 and is free.
