Solved: HDD space swallowed up

Q: Solved: HDD space swallowed up

When I came back to work from the summer, I was looking at my hdd space, and out of 150GB, I only have 15 GB free. I used WinDirStat (ran as Administrator) to see what was suddenly hogging up all my hdd space, and "Unknown is a whopping 93 GB. Like I said, I did "Run as Administrator", and I have no idea what that is and can't seem to find out with all the system files and hidden files "shown".

Any clues about what to do next?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

We put a disc into the computer and we waited and waited and nothing happened so we opened the disc drive and the dvd wasn't there! We were like WHAT! So we got a flashlight and peered in and its like there. We can see it but it won't come out!!! And this is a new laptop(it's a Toshiba). How do we get it out?! Should we turn the computer on its side and shake it? HELP!!!!!

A:Solved: The computer swallowed my disc!

You can try shaking it but if that doesn't work tell us what model Toshiba it is (it will be on the bottom somewhere) and hopefully we can help you to dismantle it and get the disk out. That could void the warranty though so you must decide if you want to risk that.

A:My Mac OS 9,1 swallowed my cd

On the front of your CD Player you will have a small hole (like a pin hole) use a straightened out paper clip or a piece of wire and push it into this hole,it will release the front door and then you can CAREFULLY pull the tray out by hand and then retrieve your cd.

I had 6 partitions.

I made 4 into unallocated space & added them to my C:\ partition.

Now I have 2 partitions.
The EFI one is 100% free space.
It is 161 MBs.
I was thinking of merging it too.
Would that hurt ?

A UEFI system needs a separate Fat32 EFI partition to boot.

I suppose you have noticed your OS partition is showing as an OEM partition?

For a particular usecase, I need to swallow the event resulting from the 'x' (clear icon) rendered for input = text fields;
The click on clear icon should not clear the field and the event should be swallowed.
In my code, event anywhere on the page is swallowed except the 'x' icon click which causes the field to be emptied.

Please indicate how to identify and swallow the event.

My first issue is that my users will be entering in item numbers with spaces. These items #'s are the same for my pic files but without spaces.

I''ve tried this....=SUBSTITUTE(D7," ","") - But my issue is I have the code below to look at a cell to grab a picture and when it uses this it does not see the item number in the cell but sees the code - didn't work.

How do I add to the code below to take cell A21 and do the substitute for any spaces.

Sub ShowPicture()

Dim DirPath As String
Dim FileName As String
Dim Pic As StdPicture

DirPath = "\\bssmas01\APPS\MAS90\Images\001"

Hi! I used to be able to burn CDs without any problem...for some reason it doesn't work anymore and I've tried quite a few things after troubleshooting by searching for solutions on-line. When I insert my CD which already has a few files on it, the details shows that there is no free space but yet only 3.43MB of data on it (it should go up to 700MB). I'm therefore unable to burn more data and I've tried the same with a blank CD, it says the same (no free space even though there is nothing on the CD yet). I have already tried uninstalling the driver and it didn't fix the problem. When I right-click Properties for the drive and go to Recording tab, the 'enable CD recording on this device' is checked as it should be. Can someone point me in the right direction? THANK YOU

I'm wondering if there's a simple setting I'm missing somewhere that returns the blank space in the name field of a window when in Detail view to blank space instead of the extension of the file name on the same plane that I click on.

I'm looking to be able to quickly change the focus from the folder structure in the left navigation pane to the name field and scroll instead of selecting any file and without having to go all the way to the far right of the window to drag the slider down to reveal the target files. I also want the blank space to work as such so I can drag-select 2-4 consecutive files in the list and quickly open them. I kind of have that part working with the checkbox viewstyle but its still too "sticky" and will sometimes only grab the first file I start on anyway.

My thanks to anyone who can ease my annoyance with Vista if but for a night.

Sony-Vaio Desktop Computer. Windows XP Home, SP2, IE 7 and Firefox 2.0.06, no viruses or spyware, HijackThis logs and Ad-Aware logs clean. Two hard disks, C and D. C is the one on which all the files are, D is empty (what is it good for, by the way?). C has an overall capacity of 27.95 GB of which 12.9 is occupied. Now, I have noticed (for two or three months, I never bothered looking before) that I am losing .01 GB of disk space PER DAY. Thus, day before yesterday, I had 15.05 GB of remaining free space, yesterday 15.04 GB and today it is 15.03.
C has never been reformatted before or undergone major "surgery". No new programs or large files have been installed or stored for ages, and automatic updates include Ad-Aware SE Personal (once a week), Windows Update (once a month) and Norton AntiVirus (once a week, only virus definitions), plus sporadic updates for Adobe Acrobat Reader, Flash etc.
The computer is turning a ripe four years old next month.
I use Disk Cleanup and Defragmenter to clean up stuff, empty my browser caches, histories and cookies after EVERY session, and delete old files when I don't need them.
So...what is behind the "theft" of my hard disk space? Thank you in advance for your time and answers.

A:How to bring back the amount of free space and used space on a hard drive

I'm a little confused about your question

You can't see how much drive space you have left when viewing your C drive via My Computer, or similar?

If you right-click on My Computer and select Manage, when the new window pops up click on Disk Management from the left hand side. What does that tell you about C drive? Assuming your C drive is actually a hard drive (and not a CD drive or something, though I have never heard of this happening and don't even know if it's possible to have C as your CD drive), you should see details at the top of the screen such as how much space you have left, by percentage of total capacity, as well as GB

I have an HP Envy 17 notebook. My notebook has 2 hard drive slots. It came with 2 500 GB HDD's. I decided to re vamp my laptop when I got it new. I put in a 40 GB SSD as my main drive. Desiganted as the C: Drive. I didnt have money for anything larger and I had my mind set on having a fast SSD instead of a normal HDD. I also put in a 320 GB Hard drive as the secondary drive. Its my E: Drive.

I also put in 8GB of Random Access memory. It came with 4GB. I then Installed Windows 7 Ultimate to my 40 GB SSD. I had about 7 GB left after installing. I just wanted a fast boot up. And I wanted Windows to run fast and smoothly.

Awhile later My SSD started having space disappear for no reason. I wasn't installing anything new on the drive, nor was I saving anything extra to it either. The extra 7 GB dwindled down to about 200 MB. Now my notebook is always running on low disk space. I have tried removing unwanted programs. I also tried clearing out cookies, history and my cache. Even tried removing system restore and shadow copies. And also tried the windows disk cleanup utility.

Does anyone know why my SSD started to have space magically vanish? I would like the space back. And can anyone give me any other ideas on how to free space on the drive? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Hi I have a HP pavilion g6 laptop on windows 7 home premium. A few weeks ago the space bar enter back space and up and down arrow keys stopped responding whilst I was typing on face book. I shut the laptop down, this did not work. I checked the filter and sticky keys weren't on , I put them on then unchecked them to clear. This did not work. I went on the HP help site where they suggested I take the battery off and hold the on button for 60 seconds then power back up. I did this and to my surprise it worked. Great I thought. But just a couple of days ago the same keys stopped responding again. I tried the same fix but this time nothing.
Can anyone help.... Is this a common fault ? I need the keys to work again ASAP.

Am I the only one to notice and complain over this in W8.1.

This morning a new Adobe Flash update has appeared, KB3079777. The update is sized at 17.9mb. Nothing is running on the PC, its idle and with no disk activity. Free space is 55.4GB. I apply the update and free space immediately falls to 54.9gb. This behaviour is consistent with every such patch applied. Now over time, that space will return which suggests that something else is going on here. But what ?

A:Free disk space & space used by a single Flash Update.

Looks like it is just me then. Today brought a 4.6Mb W8.1>W10 computability update. My free space changed from 55.2Gb to 54.7Gb.

Sounds about right. Ho hum....

Hello to all.

I have a problem with my windows 7 pro laptop that shows only 7,49/100 GB free memmory. I tried to delete all shadow copies and previous versions. Also did chckdsk /f which give me 0 errors, tried to search in hidden and OS files, but there arent any big files, diskcleanup with system files cleaned about 1 gb.
Then I downloaded winDirStat which shoved me that I only have 43Gb of data on my c: drive. I don't have any ideas what could be done to increase free disk space. Please help

A:Windows show low disk space, win dir stat shows different space

In My Computer, click the Tools menu then on Folder Options then click the View tab and tick "Show hidden files and folders" then untick "Hide protected system files and folders", click Apply and OK.

Then, go into c:\ windows and delete all the files in blue which statr with a $ symbol. They are only folders that once contained Windows Updates you no longer need to keep. Then scroll down to the Software Distribution folder and to Download. Empty that folder.

Look in Control Panel>Power options and make sure Hibernation is turned off then in System, adjust the size of System Restore so it takes up only 4% of the disk space.

Restart the computer and see hwo much space you freed up.

I received a warning message on my Sony Vaio laptop to clear up space because I'm running out of it. I looked on my C drive and was down to 9.34 GB of hard drive space out of 500GB. I know I'm at least supposed to have 150-200 GB's left. So then I proceeded to delete a few 1gb+ files(even cleared them out of the recycle bin) and went to check if I had more space and nothing changed. So I decided to update Malwarebytes when I notice that my drive space is still decreasing to 8GB's now.
Next I decide to reboot in safe mode with networking. I update Malwarebytes again and it picks up nothing after a full scan. So then I decide to update and run SuperAntiSpyware Portable. It actually picks up two registry entries from BHO-FBI Money Pak and some tracking cookies. I quarantine those files and boot back in regular mode and I notice the drive is still losing space. I figure their has to be something wrong because when I'm in safe mode with networking their is about 137GB of space left on the drive. I'm confused as to what to do next? This is very weird.

I have a fairly new CarbonX1 20HR. While editing a document, I noticed that I cannot use the ctrl+shift+space shortcut to enter a non-breaking space in a document. I've verified that it works in Word, but that character combination doesn't come through to the application from either my laptop or USB Logitech keyboard. Other similar ones, like ctrl+shift+_ for a non-breaking hyphen and ctrl+space for a ResetChar command, work fine. It seems that shift and space combination has no effect. I'm thinking this may related to the Fn+space activation of the keyboard backlighting, since this is the first time I've tried this since getting this laptop. I know I can reassign it if needed, but wondering if there is a fix for the underlying cause. Thanks!

I have an Acer Aspire 5630 Core2Duo with Vista Home Premium SP2.
I see threads with people trying to remove or disable programs to search for some speed but I am looking more for space. I use this computer primarily to download and burn movies. All my downloading goes to my D drive which I have no problems with. However, I cannot seem to get enough working space on the C drive. I removed OpenOffice, no extra space. Then Skype, no extra space. Also I removed elements of Windows but still the space is filling up with something.
What could that something be and where or how can I find some space?
I run CC Cleaner and reboot everytime I remove something and run Malwarebytes to make sure there isn't a virus. I am really at a loss.

Setting up a new box, Vista sadly to say. Installed MS Office XP Pro and get the following error when closing MS Word ONLY. Excel saves without any errors.

The disk is full. Free some space on this drive, or save the document on another disk. Try one of the following:
*Close any unneeded documents, programs, and windows.
*Save the document on another disk.

I've moved the file location and same error. I cleaned up the drive including removing all restore point except the last one.

Now this thing has a 250 gig drive but it is also used for security in a mini mart with 8 cameras. There are about 145 Gigs of video from the security cameras on this box. At this time I am just setting it up, no cameras are connected, and the security program hasn't been set up yet. I just moved the files from the old drive to this one. BTW the old drive crashed.

Hi, I've noticed sometimes that the Free Space on my harddrives won't reflect changes I've made. For example, on my 28.6gb F: drive, I had about 586mb free. I just deleted a video file of about 700 mb, so it should be up to about 1.2 gb. Oddly enough, its still at 586mb. I emptied the recycle bin of course.

Is there a way to recalculate disc space? I have Windows XP and I do have Norton System Works. This isn't the first time disc space hasn't matched recent actions. Thanks in advance.

A:Free Space inaccuracies?? Calculating disc space?

If the video wasn't in My Docs then 'System Restore' in XP may have recorded the change to enable a future restore. To record a 700mb deletion that it may be asked to restore back takes 700mb.
System restore ignores the My Docs folder so the above is irrelevant if the video was deleted from that location.

So I was always able to run a game called pirate101 by kingsisle on my mac and its virus free so I know its not the problem. One day it stopped working and I kept getting told to install and download Mcafee virus protection but I don't understand whats
wrong. It said I had 29.00 GB of disk space available but now it says there's only 21MB available I don't see how this is possible.

So I went to download my new game (Elder Scrolls Online off of Steam) and noticed that my drive was nearly full and didn't have nearly enough space, something like 30GB was left open and ESO says it requires 90282MB to download. I went on a deleting spree until I had 132GB free. Tried to download the game, and a little while later I check on it and it says that there isn't enough space and my computer says that I only have 50GB free.

I know that the above thread title has already been addressed in the past but none of them have solved my problem till now.
I have already read following threads-

Cannot extend volume (disk management) although "free space" exists

The problem is that the free space in the screenshot below cannot be deleted to make an unallocated space nor can it be used to create a new volume. Also the c: & d: drives are not able to extend from the free space available thus rendering those 92.89 GB useless.

I have also tried the help in the second link given above; i.e by using the partition wizard (i used a bootable usb for the same) i tried to convert the free space to primary partition, but that option(convert to primary) too was greyed out in the partition wizard when i tried to do so. The other option to resize the partition was also greyed out in the same partition wizard.

I also executed the chkdsk /f in an elevated command window as suggested in the first link. But no error was encountered and my laptop is working fine. I just want to recover that free space.

PN1: Previously I had ubuntu(root) installed on the partition which now is the free space of 92.89 GB. As I no longer required ubuntu i removed it as per the instructions in the given video, which i was successful in doing.

A:How do I delete the free space to make it unallocated space

Hello apple byte and welcome to Seven Forums.

If I missed this in your post, I apologize. But what happens if you assign a drive letter to the free space? Can you then delete and use disk management or partition wizard to extend the C partition?

I have a computer that has their "c: drive" almost full (221 gb drive). Every time it boots a message comes up saying "Windows created a temporary paging file on your computer because of a problem that occurred with your paging file configuration when you started your computer. The total paging file size for all disk drives may be somewhat larger than the size you specified." So first I tried adjusting the Virtual Memory BUT, I only have a drive C and a previous drive that is no longer there. So I am not for sure what drive to set my virtual memory to because there is not enough space on C drive with it being almost completely full and the one drive is non-existent. I am sure its a easy fix and im missing a step but i appreciate the help guys Thanks!

A:Low Disk Space "Temporary File Space Error"

I would type Run in the search box. Start it and then in the Run box type %temp%. This will open up the temp folder for the current user. These files are safe to delete. Log in to every other user and use the same command. Once those are deleted, use Ccleaner to clear all the browser cache then set the Paging file to 1.5 times the RAM on the system.

Hi everyone!

This is my first post on this forum

My Hard Drive is almost full but I don't understand why. I've check how many space was left on my C:\ with its property windows and it says "22GB left" but when I enter the C:\ drive and I select all the files and then toggle the property windows, it says that only 92.5 GB is used...Is there any "invisible" files that I don't see?

Check the attachement (in french sorry ) for more informations

i installed ubuntu on my ssd and had a dual boot laptop, however i want to use my ssd as a cache drive, henceforth i deleted ubuntu and now i have unallocated space and free space on my ssd and i am wondering if i need to covert that into a new partitioned volume that can be used as a cache drive

A:Use unallocated space and free space on ssd as cache drive

I think you need to allocate the free space as a linux swap partition and format it as such.

I recently installed a new Western Digital 200G hard drive on my system and ran into the WIN2K size barrier, which only will recognize 137 GB.
My installation instructions said to run Data Lifeguard Tools after the installation to put an overlay on the drive -- which would make the entire thing usable. I did that and the drive still reads at only 137G, but now there is almost 60G of "unallocated space" visible in disk management.

What's next? How do I now add that "unallocated space" to my C drive?

I'm not sure how to word this. I want to be able to locate where and what I installed, or what took place to reduce my storage. IN other words my disk free space the other day was 591G today it is 588G and for the life of me I can’t remember what I did. So my question would be, is there a way of locating what took place?
Is there help
