Unknown desk top picture and bing search window

Q: Unknown desk top picture and bing search window

Tech Support Guy System Info Utility version 1.0.0.4
OS Version: Microsoft Windows 10 Home, 64 bit
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8565U CPU @ 1.80GHz, Intel64 Family 6 Model 142 Stepping 11
Processor Count: 8

Motherboard: HP, 84C1
Antivirus: Windows Defender, Enabled and Updated

After a recent all-day session with HP Tech support who took remote control of my computer, I now have a picture on my desktop that appears when I open my laptop computer. The picture is different each time I open my laptop and gives me the option to change the series of pictures if I don't like the type of pictures it is displaying. When I click in the center of the screen, my login window appears, I enter my password and then my regular windows desktop picture displays along with my program icons. On occasion, when I log in, a bing search bar window appears as shown below.

The initial picture that appears when I open my laptop is not a big issue because I just click in the center to bring up the login window but having to close the Bing window is a nuisance. I assume the picture is somehow tied into the Bing pop up. Is there some way to keep this popup from appearing?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The problem is any search website comes up with page can't be found: Google.com, Bing.com, Yahoo.com comes up but when I try a search it does nothing. I have no issues going to any other website, just search websites.

I have a laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit with AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2011 and no third party firewall.

AVG scan is clean. Malwarebytes scan is clean. Ccleaner has been run. I have reset IE 8 settings to default. I have flushed the DNS. I have run HiJackThis and don't see any problems. I have checked the host file and there are no strange entries.

I need to know what to try next. Any help or direction would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi there and thanks for taking time to read my post.I have been working on a fix for my current issue from another post/conversation - you can read it here:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/274339/ie-browser-hijack-when-searching-w-googlebing/Issue - when using IE, and conducting a search either in the browser tool bar search or if I go the the specific search engine - when I execute the search I get normal results. When I click on a link, I get redirected to an unwanted search site. If I go back, and re-click - I am brought to the appropriate site. This seems to only happen on page one of the results. This is also random - periodically following these steps, I am not re-directed - but more often than not - the HiJack is taking over.Running XP SP3Browser IE8 - started in IE7, upgraded hoping it would fix.Have run various fix attempts (read linked post/conversation)Since starting the various fixes - the issue has progressed - the last time I launched Google Chrome, I got another browser (chrome) as well that launched into a poker site? hmmm....DDS Log:--------------------------------------------------------DDS (Ver_09-12-01.01) - NTFSx86 Run by Dan at 11:26:54.45 on Tue 12/01/2009Internet Explorer: 8.0.6001.18702Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600.3.1252.1.1033.18.2047.1392 [GMT -7:00]AV: AVG Anti-Virus Free *On-access scanning enabled* (Updated) {17DDD097-36FF-435F-9E1B-52D74245D6BF}============== Running Processes ===============C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost ... Sometime in the past I happen to download a a windows 7 from on line to be installed on an acer,

I still have it an have a need to start up a Desk Top, . .  Can it be done ?

A:Can Acer Window 7 OS be used on a Desk Top ?

The only way to know if it's physically possible would be to try. If it's a recovery disc, then it's likely to only work with the system it is intended to go onto. It will expect to find the Acer laptop hardware, and if it doesn't, may refuse to install, or install the drivers etc for the Acer, and Windows may not be able to boot.

As far as being a legitimate Windows installation goes, since it's specifically for an Acer, it will almost certainly be an OEM version of Windows, which means it is only licensed for the original system it's intended for, and can only legitimately be used on that system.

With that said, if the system you're loading it onto has a COA certificate showing a matching license, and it loaded onto the system and worked OK, then in practice as far as licensing goes it's a moot point where the installation actually came from...

The Truth About Microsoft's Market Research....

China is clearly the biggest marketing opportunity in the world, with a growing economy and billions of potential customers. Most Chinese speak Mandarin, sort of a universal language that connects all their ethnicities and language groups. They also like Fortune Cookies, don't we all? I may or may not have an issue, as I have only moderate knowledge of the workings of my computer, and would ask if anyone would be willing to give me a once over. I have tried to reset my Firefox's default search engine to Google twice now and it refuses to stick. I had this problem once before with a Privitize VPN forced search, so I took a look around in my about:config and found something that disturbed me; I have a few instances of Babylon.com search popping up in places I don't understand, and as I know that that is linked with Privitize VPN I'm a little worried, not to mention the fact that I am being forced to search with Bing though my address bar.

Does anyone know how to un-instal Windows desk top search?
It is not in Add or Remove neither is it in All Programs. It resides in a folder in Program Files, if you try to delete it there, it starts to delete then stops access denied.
It appears in Task Manager as 'searchfilterhost.exe'
It is a Windows add on.

Thanks in advance.

Ron.

A:Windows Desk top search

Look in Add/Remove for Windows Search 4. I'm not sure if it's not there it can me removed since some optional downloads are permanent, however what seals it are MS Updates after the install, so deleting all of those should allow deleting in Program Files, then re-downloading the updates (a real time waster).

I have a new HP Pavilion Laptop computer with Windows 10. System info is listed below this message.

Each time I login to Windows a Bing pop up window appears on my Desktop which I have to close. I have attached a picture to this message. Google Chrome is my default browser.

I have had a Costco Concierge technician work with me on this and he suggested I make Google search my default search engine which I have done. The pop up then disappeared for a few days and then returned. A Google search revealed that Bing is part of the Windows OS, is tied into Cortana and therefore cannot be deleted. Any instructions on how to keep this annoying window from appearing is greatly appreciated

Hello and thank you for advance for the help. Two days ago I had a virus mimicking a Windows 7 antivirus program. This program would provide increasing difficulty with remaining logged in to Windows, and I was eventually forced to do a System Restore. The problem seems to be fixed, except that I now notice I have a problem using search engines. After the search I am able to click on one result to get to the correct website, but any other results I use off the same search are redirected to random "search result" sites. I am forced to right click on the result I want on Google or Bing and open a new tab in order to view legitimate search results. This problem occurs with both Google and Bing using both Internet Explorer and Chrome. Below I have posted the DDS logfile. Hi - I have been trying to get rid of this thing myself by looking and copying the steps in various threads and finally decided that it is beyond my capabilities to do myself. I used Malwarebytes Antimalware and AdAware to try to delete it but was unsuccessful. I have Symantec Antivirus on my computer but it did not catch it. In all cases, the various programs did find something to remove and I thought it would take care of it, but it did not.

I may have some other virus as well but I am not sure as the Norton Antivirus no longer reports anything. However, things are still running slow and the machine locks up from time to time.

At any rate, thanks in advance for the help - I am so glad that you folks are out there to help people like me.

I am using firefox and it apears that Bing has hijacked my search engine.  Even if I go back and change it through the options it continues to open a new web page as Bing.  I looked in my program files and I do not see Bong or Google anywhere. I have ran malwarebytes and a spybot and hijack this and can not seem to remove it.  I can not even remove it from the list.  The remove button is grayed out.  Any information is appreciated!

A:Bing has hijacked my search engine

You might want to refresh your Firefox settings. A few months ago, Firefox changed their default search to Yahoo which uses Bing.

I had to reinstall windows xp on a pc the other day and after running windows update IE8 locked the search provider to bing. Under manage search providers I was unable to change the default search from bing. I was unable to uncheck the box allowing programs to suggest changes to my default search engine.
I repair pcs from my home and on this particular day I was working on someone else's pc. I had to hold pc for an extra day and redo OS again to rectify issue. I haven't had time to see if there's a trojan floating around causing this issue but thought I'd poll the community to see if anyone else ran into this issue or knew the cause?

A:Member Poll Bing search?

I have the same problem as of yesterday. I udpdated to IE 8 and the installation information assured me that my previous settings would be kept. I had Google as my default search engine, but now bing is the default. When I try to change it back to google and remove bing, I can click the google as default and disable bing (so I thought), but the remove button is whited out, so I can't remove it (of course, it will let me remove google). BUT - when getting offline and then back on, the bing setting is restored as the default search and a message box comes up that says a 'program' is not letting the settings remain as previously set and has reverted back to bing. Very fishy. Do you think Microsoft is pushing the bing to compete with yahoo and google?
Anyway, any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give. A few days ago my internet started acting up. When doing a web search, Google would produce search results, but when clicking on any of the results, it would send me back to the Google home page. I noticed too that when I went to put in a search, I did not get a list of topics that google usually gives you when you start to type in a search topic. I also tried Bing and got similar results, except that at Bing, clicking on a search results would either lead me to the “cannot display webpage” window, or it would load a random webpage, often times associated with the University of Phoenix. This morning it loaded a webpage called “Shopica” with the text “Top resources for pheonix [Sic] university,” below which were six links related to colleges. Clicking the BACK button loaded a webpage about migraine headaches, and another click of BACK loaded a webpage selling “StopZILLA” anti-virus software. Again, Google searches redirect back to the Google search page. Now, if I type in any webpage, such as my local news station, without using a search tool (Google etc.), the webpage functions perfectly. So this really seems tied to doing a search. Those are the symptoms. Now, some additional info: Yesterday, when trying to sort this out, a Google search led me to a webpage, presumably by Google, that stated anomalous traffic was coming from my computer, and it wanted me to enter in the human verification word to continue. I did so, and it... Read more

A:An annoyance - Bing search engine

Step 1
Select the "Chrome Menu" icon resembling three horizontal lines and select "Settings."
Step 2
Select "Google" in the "Search" section. If, for some reason, Google does not dislay, click "Manage Search Engines" and select "Google" from the list of available options.
Step 3
Close the "Settings" window and then restart the browser.
Also, make sure that Bing is not set in IE as your 'default' search provider.

Hello. Thank you in advance for helping me.
I was directed to post in this forum after "Boopme" assisted me in the "Am I infected? What do I Do" posts.
After many scans (Rkill, MBAM, TDSS, etc) I am still getting those frustrating search redirects in Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc in both IE and Firefox.
I reset my Netgear router and changed the default password. I also have a Westell 6100 modem from verizon but it was already protected with a unique username and password.
I originally had the Whitesmoke infection but all is clean now, just the darn search redirects remain.
Attaching log files as per "Boopme".
Thanks again for your help! It is greatly appreciated!

I can't search the internet using google, yahoo, or bing. When I enter something is the search box and click Search, nothing happens and all I see is a blank page. I don't get any results or any indication that the search is being processed

I am able to access internet sites if I directly type in the URL or if I use a bookmark.

All of these search engines work fine on another laptop of mine.

I'm on XP SP3 using FireFox 12 and/or IE 8.

I have Webroot anti-virus and Malwarebytes, and after running scans using each, nothing comes up.

I appreciate any ideas.
