Q: Icon Help: Icons missing and replaced with Illustrator File Icon

Hey, I've been coming to this forum for a while now since I set up my Windows 7 system, the tutorials here are fantastic, and have helped me customized Windows 7 just the way I want it!

except just after the last couple of days, I noticed that a few of the icons in the start menu were missing, and replaced with what looks like an Adobe Illustrator file icon, and when I open the program, it also shows the Illustrator icon on the task bar :S

I was just wondering if any of you might know what would cause something like this, and I greatly appreciate any help that is given

I'll attach a photo to show you exactly what I mean:

Preferred Solution: Icon Help: Icons missing and replaced with Illustrator File Icon

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, a while ago, I was annoyed with having the little shortcut arrows on desktop icons. I decided to try to find a way to have them removed, so there would be no arrows for shortcuts, and I looked on the internet for how to do so.

1. One site had me download a registry edit thing, and change my registry.
2. Another site let me download a program that would supposedly remove the shortcut arrows.

And, for a while, one of these methods worked, and I didn't have any arrows on my icons! But then, for some reason, it backfired, and now I have that strange 'unknown program' icon in place of an arrow. Here, http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...s/Untitled.jpg
(It's a safe image, don't worry)

The problem is, I really don't know which of the two things above made this happen, but I can't get it back. What can I do? I'd be fine with or without the arrows, but just not how it is now!

This happened over a year ago, I do not remember the names of the programs, what I did with the registry, and I cannot use system restore that far. Please help with any solution. I have Windows 7.

A:[SOLVED] Icons on desktop have 'missing file icon' instead of shortcut arrow?

Well, the first thing I am going to ask is if you backed up your registry (You never should make changes to the registry - especially if its a never heard of online tweak - without backing it up) That's the short fix, if you did not back up your registry then please bare with me.

Please test the following:
-Double click "My Computer"
-Go into your C:// drive
-Enter the "Program Files" folder
-Go into any folder containing an installed program, and right click on the exe file inside
-"Create Shortcut"

If a shortcut is created within the folder without that ugly missing file icon, then you can just simply go and do that with all your other programs, drag the shortcuts to your desktop, and delete the previous shortcuts. (Then you can rename them something more straightforward, instead of shortcut to so and so just so and so)

If that did not work, I would try a registry cleaner. CCleaner is free and has a basic registry optimizer built in, though you could try a more specific program, such as a RegSeeker.

If none of those work, then please get back to me on it. (I'll probably have thought of another fix by then)

By the way, now that you mentioned those shortcut arrows, I'm getting annoyed at the ones on my desktop!

The shortcut icons for my desktop icons are all missing and have been for about a year. I foolishly must have installed something at some point that removed the shortcut icons. I just started searching for results only to find a solution on this forum.

The problem is that the information that I need is in closed threads that no longer have the attachments that I would need to solve this issue.

The following link was the article that I found that had the correct info that I needed.

Here's a strange problem I'm having in Vista with custom-made icons I have created or icons from downloaded icon libraries: I go through the "change icon" procedure by right clicking a desktop icon I want to replace and then clicking properties. Then I browse to the location where the .ico file I want is stored and select it. The process works just fine. The new icon appears on the desktop. But whenever I restart the computer, I discover that one or more (but not all) of these icons has been replaced by the standard Internet Explorer icon. When I right click that icon and click properties, it shows me the icon that was replaced. I can restore it by going back through the change icon procedure all over again and giving the .ico file a new name. Any idea of what's going on here? Thanks a lot.

Last week I bought a new computer that runs Vista Ultimate x64. All was fine until I tried to install Object Desktop MyColors two days ago. It didn't seem to go well but I left the program alone and hooked up my new external hard drive to use as a backup. This required a system restart and thus the problem. When my computer came back to life after the restart almost all of my desktop shortcut icons had been replaced by a generic white page icon. First I uninstalled MyObject then did 3 System Restores at different points, but to no avail. Then I tried to change the icons from the properties menu attached to each icon. This was successful in about half of the cases. Some of the remaining icons had their proper picture associated with the program in the Start or Program menus so I just dragged then to the desktop and deleted the "white paper" icon. Now I'm left with 4 damaged icons. In each of these cases the icon properties page doesn't allow the option to change the icon, this choice is grayed out. The programs are: Microsoft Word (came already installed on the new commputer); iTunes and Smart FTP (I had installed these programs several days ago, before the problem occurred); Expression Web 2 (installed yesterday after the icon exchange). None of these programs has a copy of the proprietary icon anywhere that I can find. The Start menu shortcuts are white pages, as are the icons in the Programs menu. I fear something may have deleted a folder that these ... Read more

I had a virus on my laptop a few weeks ago and I deleted a folder .... or something ... but I'm not sure what it was. Can someone please tell me what I deleted and how I can get it back?

Screenshot belowI have tried: http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/how-to-rebuild-the-icon-cache-in-windows-vista/All It did was change my startorb back to a windows logo, and change the windows live messenger icon back to a different windows icon. When I would create a desktop icon for a website in Windows XP, I'd see an icon that was specific to the site. You know, like the round fox with the flaming tail for Firefox, or the red M for gmail.

But when I drag a url and drop it to the desktop in 8.1 (using Firefox, btw), I get none of the site-specific icons. I see them in my bookmarks list but on the desktop every icon is only the white rectangle that I thought indicated a file, on your computer, not an internet website. What gives? Is this a Firefox thing? Can I create a desktop icon in another way? I seem to recall that in XP creating one was as simple as a right mouse click anywhere on your site and picking "create desktop icon", but that doesn't work in 8.1

I'm an old fuddy duddy, and I want desktop icons as well as bookmarks, and I don't want them all to look the same. I can put up with not being able to do anything about the text color for the names of icons if I can actually have a, hello, different icon for every site.

To anyone who can and will help--thanks.

A:ALL my website desktop icons show as same white FILE icon

I usually drag the little icon on the left end of a URL in the Address bar to the Favorites toolbar or to the Desktop, not the URL itself. The icon itself relies solely upon a Web site having a favicon.ico file on it somewhere. [I've lost track of it but I used to have a small program that could harvest favicon.ico files and save them but that was back with WinXP and IE6, don't know if it would work with later versions.]

Ive gone into explorer>tools>folder options>file types, clicked the htm/html, advanced setting, went to change icon and received an error message saying: windows cannot find file %1 or something. I then located where the location of firefox.exe within my program files and chose 1 of the icons. Unfortunately, the icons do not change and remain as the default windows data file icons. I have also tried using any/all types of icons to no avail. Any help is appreciated, thank you.

Have you tried this?

Open Windows Explorer and right click on an HTML file. Look for the option "open with". You might have to hold down the shift key while right clicking to bring up that option. Associate the HTML file with Firefox and it should show the correct icon.

Hello guys,

I'm having a bit of a problem. Earlier tonight a couple of program icons started appearing as blank on my Windows 7 Pro PC. The programs in question were Word 07 and Powerpoint 07. I decided to try and fix them by rebuilding the icon cache but... unfortunately it just seems to have made things worse!

Now all of the Office programs have blank icons, as well as my anti-virus, Skype, Steam, WLM and a couple of others. Resetting and Rebuilding the Icon Cache keeps giving me the same results...

Does anyone know how to fix this?

A:Rebuild Icon Cache File - Certain programs now have blank/default icons. 8(

The original files or icons from which the icon cache is populated or the registry data pointing to them may have been damaged or somehow deleted. This is hard to sort out except by reinstalling the program.

Can you try reinstalling one of those programs to see if you can get it back as a test?

Office type programs might fix this by doing a "repair", but you may need the disk to complete it.

On my laptop I have an SD card slot. Whenever an SD card is in, a removable storage device shows up in "Computer" in Explorer. When I open up "Computer" through the start menu, the icon for the drive as expected (the standard SD card icon), but if I navigate to "Computer" in a File Open dialog (e.g. in Firefox, File->Open File...), the icon is missing. The drive is there, but the icon is one of those generic missing-icon icons. I've attached a screen shot.

This is a relatively new build (Vista Business x64), and I've noticed it from day one.

Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks.

The "no icon" icon is that icon that shows while the system is booting up, smaller than other 'normal' desktop shortcut icons. It is then replaced with the 'official' icon for that shortcut..

After removing some malware that prevented access to the internet, I found that all my desktop shortcut icons are now overlaid with that "no icon" icon.
If I drag a new shortcut icon off windows explorer, as soon as I release the mouse drag - that "no icon" icon immediately over lays the original icon.
They still work, but is untidy and makes the original icon unreadable.

I created a new user, and upon logging that user on, all IT'S desktop shortcut icons are also over laid.

What to do?

Usually unless you are using either the Windows Photo Viewer or the default Photos app, thumbnail previews of image files may not work with the program you set as the default program even when you have thumbnail previews turned on.

To fix this, you'll need to set either program above as the default program with all of it's associations.

Installed Illustrator 10 which works in compatibility mode.

But the hundreds of .ai files are showing with blank icons now (the bent page corner) rather than the small "preview icons" representing each actual image. Locations of these files are foldered and on the desktop.

The .ai files are already associated with the Illustrator program within Win7.

Is this reality with compatibility mode or can something be done to liven the icons the way they should show?

Hi guys, so I have a little problem, I've downloaded FileTypesMan because I wanted to change the .exe files appearance on my computer.

I did this using this program - all .exe file icons changed, however, with them changed ALL the shortcuts to all the programs that I have on my laptop - now they all look the same.

I can't figure out how to change it all back.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Max, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you like, you might see if downloading and merging the .reg file for the listed exe item in the tutorial below may be able to help. It'll restore the default association and registry entries for exe files.

Hi, the Internet Explorer icon just dissappeared from the windows bar on the bottom of the screen. Instead, a white blank icon replaced it. How can I get the normal icon back? Thanks for your feedback.

Hello bakelite, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If the IE shortcut still works, then you might see if rebuilding the icon cache may help.

If not on both, then you could see if unpinning the icon, then pinning the iexplore.exe file below to your taskbar to recreate it may show better.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

Hope this helps for now,

After restarting my PC, I logged into windows and saw that practically every single icon and file has a picture of a 'lock' on it - for a second there I thought it meant I couldn't access those files or otherwise - but I am.
Can anyone tell me why and how I possibly managed to get them, and how can I remove them so that my desktop doesn't look 'totally encrypted' :P

Thank you in advance.

You may try going to Control Panel => System Properties => Advanced tab then click on Performance Options Visual Effects tab and you take a look the selections here and sort of play around with the settings.

A:How to add a new icon to winxp icons set

Hi view..

I use a shareware program called Icon Packager from Stardock to do this....although I think there are a few programs that are capable of doing it, some may even be freeware.

I bought a laptop a few weeks ago, which had XP Pro preinstalled. It's not a big thing, but when I click on a shortcut and chose the change icon option, the navigation window pops up as it should; which allows you to go to the folder where your icons are. The thing is when I navigate to the folder where I keep a few icons I like to use, they don't show up as icons when I select the icon option under view. They are all the same, in fact I think the icon used is the one windows uses when it doesnt know what the file is. The icons show up this way even if I go straight to the folder instead of going through the change icon process. I don't know if this is connected, but video clips on this laptop don't display a thumbnail if thumbnail is selected under view. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. By the way, these icons still work if you select them but you just cant see what your selecting. They also show up as they should on my other computer

Referring to my attached screenshot:

(1) Note that since XP Reinstallation all my screenshot icons are RED IrfanView Icons whereas previously (despite my having Irfan installed & in use) the system would differentiate by displaying, for example:
a BMP screenshot1 icon
a GIF screenshot1 icon
Any solution for this?

(2) The reinstall process foisted on me Microsoft's anti-virus so that it's now installed simultaneously with AVG7 (the AVG files are checkmarked in Startups).
But my AVG icon is grey, and when I try to "check for updates" it displays:
"no new update" (see screenshot)
Whereas previously, the AVG icon was red/yellow/green, and when I'd check for updates I didn't get that message.
Also note on bottom right:
"Internal Virus Database out of date"
