Activation Error after HW change - Unable to activate windows

Q: Activation Error after HW change - Unable to activate windows

Hi,

3 days ago I update my HW (MB, CPU, RAM & SSD), so after reinstalling all drivers and after couples of reboots I was awaited by this message on desktop "Activate Windows, go to setting and activate windows." so I do that I go to "Settings/Update & Security/Activation" there I select "troubleshoot" and than select "I change hardware on this device recently" and after that I get message "Unable to Activate Windows / We can't reactivate Windows as our servers aren't available right now. Wait for a few minutes or try adding your Microsoft account again."

What can I do next, has anyone have any solution?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I bought a new laptop (GIGABYTE P35K-CF2) a couple of days ago and have been struggling to activate it without making any progress. In contrast with other threads I have been reading on the forum, I am not trying to install a different OS version at all. I just need to activate the Windows 8 Professional that was pre-installed by default.

I understand the current Microsoft approach is to embed the Windows Product Key in the motherboard (encrypted in the BIOS/UEFI) in order to minimize piracy, etc. I also understand this allows for the Windows installation to directly read such product key and activate it automatically. Well, for some reason this is not working on my brand new laptop.

Allow me to explain in detail what has been happening during the last 24 hours:

1) I noticed a pop-up window that required a new Windows key since the current product key was apparently blocked. Please notice that up to that point I didn't change anything regarding to Windows itself. In fact, I only installed a couple of programs, including an antivirus. Automatic updates were also turned off.

I just spent the last three hours on the phone. I was transferred 5 times and no one could help me. I want to rage beyond words right now.

So here is the problem...

I have a legitimate copy of Windows 7 ultimate. (that I bought in 2010 from my college.)

When windows 10 came out I made a mistake and did a CLEAN install not knowing the idiotic rule of not being able to validate the old windows 7 key. (validation only works if I did a windows 7 to 10 upgrade FOR SOME STUPID REASON.)

Now I am stuck in windows 10. My windows 7 key will not validate to re download windows 7 in order to UPGRADE to windows 10.

I have the disc of windows 7 but I do not have a CD rom. (so I will need to do a USB install)

When I call Microsoft they check my key (to ensure it is valid) they say everything is fine with it, but like I said I cannot use it.

I have not given this key to ANYONE. I also did not deactivate it before the windows 10 clean install.

When I attempt to download the windows 7 download and enter my key I get this response...

"Error
The product key you entered appears to be for software licensed through an Enterprise Agreement. Please contact the Volume Licensing Service Center for software recovery options or visit the Volume Licensing Home Page for more information on Enterprise

Hi Matt -

Did you buy a copy of Win7 from your school? Is this a retail copy of Win7 or is it one which is activated by the school's IT department?

If it's a retail copy then with the Product Key you should have been given at purchase you can follow the steps in this link to Clean Install Windows 7. Be sure to boot the disk: How to Boot your Computer from a Bootable CD or DVD

If it's an organization's Enterprise copy, consult your School on how to activate it.

Ask back any questions you have as we will help you set it up so it runs perfectly.

Hello everyone,
This is my first post in this forum. So I have a HP notebook which had came up with preinstalled win 8.1 Single Language.I waited when windows 10 upgrade notification started coming up until today I upgraded.

Since I have a very low Speed connection(80-100Kbps download speed),I preferred to download the ISO file of Windows 10.It is Windows 10 Home Version build 1511.I mount it up on upgraded to windows with keeping my personal files and settings intact.

Now,the "activate windows" watermark is showing up at the bottom of the screen.I did tried to activate windows but it failed with error 0xc004f074.I check this website's forum and someone suggested to activate the windows by inputting your windows 8.1 product key.I found it out by shadowkey plus. But the 0xc004f210 comes up "you are running windows 10.The product key you entered cannot be used to activate this edition".I am stuck here unable to rectify the activation situation.Someone please enlighten me here....

After many, MANY clean installs due to a misdiagnosed problem (it was a power supply issue, not a hard drive one) my stupid Windows CD key stopped being legit. I guess. I've been having to call in EVERY TIME to activate. Well the most recent reinstall made me lazy and I let the activation month period run down. I thought I'd do it at the last minute.. why not?

Well at 10 days my son asked why I hadn't activated. He said he could bypass the activation through Regedit and so I let him try.

BAD. IDEA.

The activation key in the icon bar disappeared and when manually opening the activation screen, it says it's already been activated. I thought I was good to go, but after a couple of days I started getting a countdown when I logged in. You know, You only have 5 days left to activate Windows.

I thought that was bizarre because I couldn't activate it otherwise, so I ignored it. Well today I've reached 0 and I can't log in. Period.

When I attempt to log in it says I need to activate, pressing no logs me out. Pressing yes opens the activation window that says it's already been activating.. pressing ok to that just logs me out and the same thing happens. I can still log into Safe Mode. Are there any fixes for this, or do I have to reinstall AGAIN?

I hate this so much.

Well I got a big problem.

A couple days ago I noticed network connectivity issues. Random connection drops, overall bad connection, etc. I recently had some really bad malware and I removed it, so I suspected leftover malware from the start. I went to check Windows Update to see if I missed a security update, and it wasn't even on my computer. Something removed the service completely off my computer, so I found a .reg to fix it. I then started Windows Update and found that I had 30 updates missing and updated all of them successfully.

I then decided to see what was going on with my Windows Firewall, only to find that it was also removed. Wasn't in my services or anything. So I downloaded the .reg to fix that, tried to activate the service, only to run into another roadblock that I still haven't been able to fix, an error stating

"The Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Service on local computer started then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs".

Ok. So I checked my services again and I believe that some more were completely missing(Base Filtering Engine, NSI proxy Service). So to try and remedy this, I attempted an sfc /scannow in elevated cmd prompt.

Then another brick wall. I get to 59% and then I get this message

"Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation".

Trustedinstaller service is turned on, so I have no idea why I'm getting this message. But... Read more

My enterprise has perchased many licenses of Windows 7 Pro.  including KMS activation license key.  And I have deployed the KMS activation infrastructure in my enterprise network.
Recently, we bought a set of Opliplex 3010 , 7010 & 9010 PCs, nearly 100 PCs. All of them are N-series without pre-installed Windows 7 by Dell factory.
I tried deploy OS and many enterprise APPs to these PCs through network , using MDT.

The OS image I used in MDT is Window 7 Pro Volume License Edition which was from Microsoft volume license site. But the KMS method cannot activate Windows 7 Pro. on Optiplex 3010, 7010, 9010 .

After deployment, the PCs telled that the the volume license key is invalid, MAK is required. Windows cannot be activated.

But the issue has never come out on any other computers of our enterprise before.
I have been searching for the solution on internet, but get nothing. And some one said that the BIOS somewhere is locked or modified by Dell to prevent
prated operating system. But the OS and KMS we are using is lawful.
Can any one tell me how to activate our volume licensed Windows 7 Pro. by the KMS infrastructure in my enterprse? Thanks!

A:Volume license activation (KMS infrastructure) cannot activate Windows 7 Pro. on Optiplex 3010, 7010, 9010 ?

Hi,
did you purchase these computers without any OEM Windows license?
Volume Licensing agreements only offer "upgrade", not "full" - an existing license such as OEM, will have the necessary SLIC table in BIOS populated, and this is usually what VL products look for, to confirm legitimacy.
You can use the MGADiag utility from MS to confirm the SLIC table in BIOS has been populated.
Without the SLIC table populated in BIOS, it may be necessary for you to use MAK not KMSDon

I was given 2 options: ring a microsoft number and give them a long code over the phone or enter my product key i was given when I bought windows a few years ago. Putting in my product key doesn't work, and it prompts me to buy another (nope). I have just rung the number and given them my code and i got told i either need to buy a new product key or ring customer service and see if they can sort it out. Thought i'd try here first. Hi! I browsed the forum but I did not find this feature highlighted.

It is not a recent feature , it came with AU but I discovered it yesterday and not many people know this on other forums

So I want to give you a reason to use a MS account !

If you change even the MOBO, following this guide , you don' need to pay for another W10 license .

Spoiler: Guide
When you make significant hardware changes, such as replacing the motherboard or hard drive, Windows 10won't be able to identify your computer correctly, and as a result, the operating system won't activate.
Previously, if your installation of Windows 10 lost its activation due to a hardware change, you would have to go through the tedious process of contacting Microsoft customer support to re-activate, which is not an ideal solution.

However, Microsoft is now simplifying the process. Beginning with the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, you can link your Microsoft account (MSA) with the Windows 10 digital license on your device. The new feature allows you to access the Activation Troubleshooter quickly to re-activate your free upgrade copy of Windows 10.

In this Windows 10 guide, we'll guide you through the process to link together your Microsoft Account and digital license, and the steps to use the Activation Troubleshooter to re-activate the operating system.

How to link your Microsoft account with the digital license

Those hardware changes tell Microsoft you have installed Windows on a new computer. Your version of Windows may be OEM which is allowed only on the computer it is first installed on. The Retail and Upgrade versions allow installing on a REPLACEMENT computer but not on 2 computers at the same time.

Hi: Yes, most likely you will.  Anytime a motherboard is changed, the hardware hash exceeds the limit of hardware devices allowed by Microsoft to be changed. As far as I see it, you have two options... 1. Reinstall W7 with HP recovery disks and windows should automatically activate. 2. Change the product key and use the W7 key off the sticker on the PC to activate if you don't want to reinstall windows.

We bought this laptop about a year ago at Best Buy, but haven't used it much until recently. I see that Windows 8 is not activated, however, when I go the system page to activate it, nothing happens. I have tried EVERYTHING, including: Downloading the Windows 10 update(this won't work unless the current version of Windows is activated)I checked the properties of this PC, and for Product ID, it says "Not Available".Additionally, I used a 3rd party program (belarus) to ID the Windows product key, so I tried to manually activate Windows using the key, and get a message that the key is not valid. I have done this MANY times, just to make sure I'm entering the right key. At this point, this product is near useless, as I can't even install Windows updates until I can validate/activate the current OS.  FYI, the version of Windows 8.1 is Build 9600, whatever that is. This notebook did not come with a sytem DVD or a hard copy of Windows, either. I even tried restting the computer to the original factory settings, and that didn't help either. I'm hoping there is a solution for this - help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello all.

I recently formatted my computer and reinstalled Windows. However, I was forced to use my dad's disc, which is notably a few years older than mine, to install. I had lost my disc, but still had my serial code. Now, I'm unable to activate Windows with the tool that keeps prompting me to do so. It says "Online activation cannot be completed at this time." Obviously my internet connection works fine, but otherwise I have no idea what the problem may be. I was able to update with the Automatic Updater just fine.

My alternative is to either find my own disc (I've been searching for weeks to no avail) or activate it by phone. I would prefer not to have to call Microsoft. Another alternative I could think of would be to take my rig in to the shop which built it for me, and explain things to them. If I give them my serial code, is it possible they may be willing to do a format/reinstall with my code?

Thanks!

Hello,

I purchased a Lenovo y510p which came installed with Windows 8.1 (not pro). Later I decided to upgrade to Windows 8.1 pro but at that time I didn't activated it. So, right now an "activate windows" mark is coming on lower down side.
So firstly, I quickly bought a genuine windows 8.1 pro x64 key. But now, when I try to activate the computer through activation center, then it says that this key won't work. Moreover when I try the "slmgr.vbs -ipk <key>" method, then it says that key is added but then gives an error saying: "Error: 0xC004E016 On a computer running Microsoft Windows non-core edition".

Please let me know that how do I fix these errors and successfully activate my computer.

Becasue of security problems, was forced to attempt repair of windows xp sp2. Repair succeeded but then prompted for activation code. I inadvertently may have entered the wrong code as I have several licenses.
Now when I boot - I get the windows login screen - when I click on the user name - error message comes up says - this copy of windows must be activated - options are yes or no - clicking on yes brings up a blank desktop for a very long time and then puts me back at the login screen - clicking on no puts me back at the logon screen right away.
I believe the problem is that windows cannot access the internet to authenticate the activation but I cannot connect to the internet without windows.
A real catch 22!
The system boots in safe mode!
Any help would be appreciated

why was there a repair to begin with, maybe related?

as far as the activation, the best thing to do is to try the repair again and make sure you use the proper key.

I purchased a copy of Windows 8.1 for a PC, and have since upgraded the hardware. Now it appears my copy is no longer "active".
The "Activate Windows" program states "Windows can't activate. Try again later"
Clicking on the "Error details" displays a blank box (see image).
Running slui 4 hangs / spins at "call and provide your installation id"
slui 3 states my key doesn't work
Running the windows update diagnostic provides these fixes:
Service registration is missing or corrupt - Fixed
Windows update error 0x80070057 - Fixed
Problems installing recent updates - Fixed
(Note none of these are fixed, and it provides this output every time the diagnostics tool is run)
Booting from the disk and running a refresh states the drive is locked and must be unlocked.

Any help would be very much appreciated!

A client brought me an Envy dv7 laptop that had come originally with Windows 8.0. He reported that it had be updated to Windows 8.1 and then Windows 10. He wanted to transfer the machine to a relative, so did a factory restore back to 8.0. He brought it to me to return it to Windows 10. To save time, I did a clean install of Windows 10 and it reported activated. Now, a few days later it says it is NOT activated. After speaking with Microsoft, I was told I had to retrieve the original imbedded Windows 8.0 license key from the motherboard an input it as the license key to activate Windows 10. I don't have any idea how to retrieve that key and from the reading I've done, HP is not likely to be helpful on this. I've even tried Windows 8.0 and 8.1 OEM keys I have in stock, but they do not work.  I'm open for suggestions and/or assistance on this.

A:Unable to activate Windows 10

Hello, This falls under Microsoft responsibility. HP might be able to help you activate Windows 8/8.1 which originally was installed on the PC. After it migrated to 10, it is using MS methods (so to say).  If the computer had previously Win 8/8.1 and was eventually upgraded to Windows 10, then it is activated using Digital Entitlement method, therefore no keys/codes are needed for activation. If Windows 10 is later reinstalled, then it should activate fine without any codes as long as these conditions are met:- the computer is the same- the hardware is the same- the correct Windows 10 edition was installed  If the computer originally had Windows 8.1 (e.g. Standard edition) but now you installed Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise, then it will not work. Most probably this is the case. Based on the official documentation, this computer comes with variety of options and some are Windows 8 (standart/plain edition), the others come with 8.1 Pro. Please, check which one was the edition originally installed, take Windows 10 from MS with the correct edition and reinstall it >> https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO Windows 10 should activate fine using Digital Entitlement >> https://support.microsoft.com/is-is/help/12440/windows-10-activation Let me know how this goes.

Where did you purchase your new 8.1Pro Key from?
From what I can see, the current Key appears to have been declared 'expired' - I'm not sure whether this means that it's out of the grace period, or that the Key itself is wrong.

You should really be asking this question on our sister forum - www.eightforums.com - where people with more experience of Win8.1 upgrade problems may be able to help better than I can.

Hey.  Basically I made some hardware changes to my computer (a year ago or so) and now Windows is requiring another activation.  Problem is, I don't have access to the Internet through that computer and when I called tech support they told me that because I can't produce an installation ID# (there wasn't one on the dialog box), I have to format and re-install the OS.  I really don't feel like doing that (not just because I tossed the installation CD my computer came with), and this is Microsoft after all, so I'm basically asking is there another way to activate?  Would an Internet connection get the job done or is there something else I can do?  Thanks...

A:Unable to activate copy of Windows XP Pro

Activation...is the province of Microsoft...as is every version of Windows.  PA protects MS property/legal rights.

Are you saying that you tried a telephonic activation?

I've not heard of "installation ID"...a user needs the license/key to activate.

If the system is an OEM system (made by Dell, HP, etc.)...a change of key hardware items has been considered a change of system by MS...since 2006 or so.

I just purchased Windows 7 64bit upgrade.

I installed it on my Windows XP computer. According to the official microsoft guidance, this upgrade can only be done as a "clean" or "custom" install - in place installs don't work when upgrading a 32bit system to 64bit.

Anyway, I installed Windows 7 no problem, but when trying to activate I am told 0xC004F061 error, This product key is licensed only for upgrading, not for clean installations.

What do I do? This is a valid CD for installing Windows 7 to an XP computer, and I have a valid XP COA - how do I activate the software I paid for?

Bless,
Chris

Sometimes people get confused over letters in the product key. They mistake an o for a 0 or a B for an 8. That sort of thing. Check yours or have a friend look at it and see if they are seeing if differently.

Hello,

I'm in a twist and I'm not exactly sure what the problem is.

I bought a new laptop with Win8 pre-installed (and immediately updated it to 8.1).
I decided after a week to buy an SSD and installed Win8.
I now find there is no product key to be found, and can't seem to activate Windows.

1. I've tried a few things. I tried to enable UEFI in PC Settings, but the setting isn't there (does this mean my laptop doesn't support UEFI?)
2. I entered my BIOS. CWM was enabled, and pwe enable. But SECURE BOOT disabled. So I enabled SECURE BOOT, but regardless of what options I select, the laptop keeps booting into the [Legacy] BIOS, possible because there are no BOOT OPTION PRIORITIES found any longer?

And where I'm at. My problem is activating windows, and if UEFI is an option, enabling it.

First off, thank you to whomever helps me work this out.

The problem: I have recently inherited a Eee PC c/XP sp3 and wanted to install Openoffice on it. Attempting to install open office triggered an error, which requested I update to the latest version of IE. Upon trying to activate windows update in order to install IE and any other necessary updates I run into a series of errors preventing me from activating it. I then tried to dwnld/install IE 8 from microsofts update page, which was on 50% successful. During the install I encounter a ieseptup.exe - Bad image error which reads:

The application or D:: C:\WINDOWS\System32\wuapi.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.

And that is where I am currently at.

You do not need to update IE8 to install Open Office. Any browser Firefox, Chrome etc will work
For your other errors, go to Start/Run and type SFC /scannow put the XP CD in and it will replace any missing or corrupted files from the disc

Ok I've been trying to find a solution for 3 days now. I've ggogled a lot but only found the standard ways but nothing helps.

The problem at hand is this:
I'd been using Windows Search (in the explorer upper right corner and start menu) often and intensely. After a session of using CCleaner and a reboot my Search Service didn't work anymore. It even disappeared in the Service Manager (services.msc). I found that the files SearchIndexer.exe, SearchFilterHost.exe and SearchProtocolHost.exe were missing from the system32 folder and the syswow64 folder. The file SearchFolder.dll is ok and there BTW (in both folders).
I used "DLL Suite" to download these files but they seem to be incompatible with my system somehow. Since the cmd prompt "regsvr32 SearchIndexer.exe" gives me the error that i should check the compatibility of the file for a 32 or 64 bit version of regsvr32.exe.
Furthermore when I add the files manually then it appears in the Service Manager but it says "Failed to read description. Error Code: 2" and if i try to start it "failed to find the patch specified" (the event viewer displays an error with the same message).
When i activate the search service through the feature manager it works fine, configures to 30% then reboots, starts off at 35% and - at the last try up till now - it got through to 98% then immediately switches to failure configuring-revert changes and the files get deleted.
