You've just crossed over, into the Microsoft Zone

Q: You've just crossed over, into the Microsoft Zone

I thought that the truly bizarre only took place with Windows Media Player, but unable to get Windows Update operating I began my search to track down the reason.
Apparently, I learned, I had already done all the right things to no avail. In desperation I attempted to follow Microsoft's directions for help with their support team. Hmmm. Every link eventually took me not to help but to a link on buying Windows 7 or 8. Should I be feeling cynical?
Finally, here's what was happening with Windows Update. Windows Update would tell me that I coudn't use their service without installing XP SP3. I checked out the downloads for SP3 & I was told that I could not download the SP3.iso. I must go to Windows Update & use that service to install the SP3 update. Huh?
I found a way around this by downloading the iso from tech.net where Microsoft told me the download was only available to network managers. Today, I guess that I became one.
Yep, that fixed the problem, in spite of everything that Microsoft did to leave me flat on the way.
Anyone else out there go through this nonsense?

Preferred Solution: You've just crossed over, into the Microsoft Zone

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The Windows XP sp3 update was introduced in 2008. If you've been operating without it this long, you should expect to run into snags along the way. Hopefully you've been able to get all the updates installed now. Internet Explorer 8 runs well with XP sp3.

I kept getting a pop up window that said Microsoft windows needs to run a window outside the windows secure zone. It looked just like the dark yellow/ gold microsoft window so after trying to ignore it many times and clicking on "don't show again" it kept coming. So like a dummy I figured just allow it and it wouldn't come up any more. Well now as soon as I open IE (explorer) It just goes crazy opening windows all over the screen and doesn't stop until it locks up or I restart or shut it down by ctl-alt-del and go to the red button down in the right corner and choose one.

So has any one seen this? Know how to get rid of it?

I've run my Avast, Malwarebits, the systems security and CCleaner, none of them find anything. Tried to delete IE to reinstall it but the system will not allow me to delete it.

Help please...

Microsoft Planning IE7 Security Zone Lockdowns

 Hi experts,
I have a following problem - I am using the Site to Zone Assignment List GPO to assign the local site to trusted sites in order to enable automatic logon. Now when I open the URL in IE11 it works just fine - when I click on Sign In on
the portal it reloads and the user is signed in. When I verify the zone via File -> Properties menu I see, that the site is assigned to the "Trusted Sites" zone. doing the same on the same computer with the same user on Microsoft Edge doesn't
work - it asks for credentials. Now:
 - What is the potential reason for this? I also configured the "Do not sync browser settings" GPO to Disabled and I see it is applied properly
 - Where can I verify in Edge which zone has been assigned to the particular URL (that's a must for troubleshooting this problem)
Thank you in advance for any hints

Two ISP’s with two blocks of Static ip's
One block enters building, is split by switch, and then goes into a series of routers, then into internal network to web servers, PC’s and proprietary comm. devices
Second block using one ip into own router, then into other devices inside.

*These networks then shared by unmanaged internal switches (not my doing) *

Symptoms: 1) internal computer will periodically pick up different external IP addresses (using IP Chicken)
2) Internal comm. device often addressable on 123.xxx.xx.44 drops and can only be seen on 456.xxx.xxx.67 ; it must be seen by 123.xxx.xx.44 or we lose customers.
I am able to ping from one network to other.
I'm not at all sure if these symptoms are caused by the same issue.

This crossed system was seen by client as a means of redundancy.
I assume I must disable any internal communication between these networks ?

Seems reasonable to me, unless there is a reason (not redundancy) that there must be some cross communication.

When opening Epson Smart Panel I found my windows to choose from corrupted and the text literally crossed out. I finally was able to get Epson Twain up by clicking the large button on the scanner, but after scanning a photo, the window to name the scan was also corrupted and would not respond to anything. I finally removed the program with Add/Remove ability. Now I am trying to install Epson Perfection 1650 back on my computer. I put the original CD in my CD drive and nothing seems to be recognized. I went to "Run" and that doesn't open up as it usually does. What can I do to solve this mystery? I've been on-line to see if Epson has any similar problems listed, but there was nothing like this. Is my computer infected with something. I hope not. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks, lilart

Starting in the spring of 2007, daylight saving time (DST) start and end dates for the United States will transition to comply with the Energy Policy Act of 2005. DST dates in the United States will start three weeks earlier (2:00 A.M. on the second Sunday in March) and will end one week later (2:00 A.M. on the first Sunday in November).

The update that this article describes changes the time zone data to account for the United States DST change. This time zone update will also include changes for other related DST changes, time zone behavior, and settings. Some of these changes will occur in 2007, and some have occurred since these versions of Windows were originally released. The update that this article describes also includes some changes that have previously been released as individual hotfixes. An example of this is the Sri Lanka change in time zone offset. This update will also include some changes that have been individually documented in Microsoft Knowledge Base articles. Click to expand...

Item: This is a Logitech K740 Illuminated desktop keyboard, wired, low-profile/slim.

Story: Cat spilled a little water in the bottom left corner of my laptop, angry and without thinking, I tried to wipe it off and soak it up, pushing keys down (yup, stupid, I know). Keyboard was still plugged in and began acting different.

Result: All the keys still work, however, some keys type more than they're assigned. Typing "h" results in typing "4hq". There are many other keys that react the same way. I believe it to also be fully dry now. Currently I am using a borrowed keyboard for my computer and I have tested this keyboard on my laptop, so it's certainly not a computer issue, lol.

The point: So far I have taken it apart a few times to air-dust and heat dry. I'm attempting a full cleaning now, and so far have the shell off, the illuminating layer removed, all keys and hinges removed, and the membrane accessible. The plan is to fully clean it with q-tips and rubbing alcohol.

So what I'm here for I suppose is to find anyone who's had a similar problem and has successfully repaired it, or someone who knows more about keyboards and can give me some insight of what the problem is/could be, and how to fix or repair it. Thanks for your time and hope someone has some insight for me.

My computer has been locking up, the windows that are open flash, the screen goes black for a few seconds and then comes back on. Last night a rabbitt crossed my screen immediately after one of these lockups. I thought I was seeing things until it happened again an hour or so later. I have CyberDefender basic. I called them and the tech I spoke with took control of my computer and checked it. I watched him pull up a screen showing a huge list of errors and this, combined with the rabbitt , gave him enough reason to tell me it was probably a virus but the basic security that I paid for does not include this. Unless I give them another $300 and something CyberDefender can't, or won't, help me any further with this. I have defragged (with the program reccomended by this site), ran CCleaner, deleted a large amount of files and pictures, and downloaded the security updates from Microsoft. I am starting to see double from staring at this screen so long. I can't recall how to get to the list he showed me. I'm not sure what I'd do if I could find it. There was some unauthorized activity on my credit card about a month ago, and my computer was running slow and freezing some. It has become an expected annoyance to deal with while working. I need help.

So I currently work on my cities helpdesk as a support tech. I was deploying a PC today and needed to create an account that did not require a password so I had to remove it from the domain because of GP. While doing so I unintentionally entered my domain username and local built-in administrator account password and it successfully removed the PC from the domain. Is this something that Windows intends to allow? I was baffled that it worked because simultaneously upon hitting enter I expected the error to occur but it successfully rejoined the WORKGROUP I entered. I thought maybe I had made a mistake so I asked a coworker to do the same thing on another PC right next to me and it too succeeded. Any thoughts or explanations?

A:Windows 7 PC Removed From Domain With Crossed Credentials?

Hi Crammit,

I only have experience removing computer from a domain with domain admin credentials, not the local admin credentials. I'm not sure if the latter works.

That being said, if you used the username of the domain admin and the password for the local admin (assuming they are different), there should have been an error as the login wouldn't have authenticated.

Are you sure this is what you did? Or am I misunderstanding?

So in dealing with the 0x024 error and not having a Windows XP disk, and trying to get back on board before my friend finds out whats going on with his computer. I have searched and searched for an answer to wether or not you can get to the command line to run dskck by using a Vista re-install disk! To no real avai, i went for it!... and now im running the memory diag tool (Ext.) What i need to know is this the same as diskcheck, or no? It says it incl. all stndrd plus MATS+ (cache disabled), Stride38, WCHCKR3, ERAND, STRIDE6 (cache disabled), and CHCKR8. And i also need to know if i went and really messed things up? Im new at this, and really do appreciate any input!

The Memory Diagnostics checks RAM, not the hard drive.
You can use the Vista disk to run chkdsk.

Boot with the Vista/Win7 DVD, or Vista RE CD.
Select your Language, click Next
Click Repair your Computer
It will scan for Vista/Win 7 installations, but won't find any, just wait for it to finish.
If using Win7 Disk, select Use recovery tools that can help fix problems starting Windows. at the top.
Click Next
Click Command Prompt.
Type chkdsk /R and press Enter.
This may take several hours.
Close the Command Prompt, click Restart

I have a very peculiar problem. I'm trying to connect my desktop to my laptop over the WLAN. Both computers are connected to the router, as well as I've got no problems sharing files to my PS3 via media servers. But connecting the two computers is impossible. I've tried everything I can think of. I've tried connecting the two both using Homegroup services, and in the old fashion way, without the Homegroup service, using only IPv4. The only way I can make them connect to each other is to use a crossed cable. This works without problems, using static IPs. I also tried to connect the two PCs by making an Ad-Hoc, but again they were troubling to connect. So to me it seems like firewall settings and sharing in general works ok, but making it work over WLAN is very troublesome. If you could give me some advices what to try, it would be very appreciated.

Today Sept 10, 2015,  your staff member Angoid referred me to this forum.
The following is a narrative that occurred yesterday Sept 9 or the day before.  The computer used is a February manufactured Lenovo laptop with a Windows 8.1 OS and a Chrome browser is being used. Purchased in May, it had been carefully gone through to clean it of much bloatware, and arguably suspicious malware.
While in web mail, mail was opened before identifying later it was not from the assumed, trusted sender, AND a link within the text of the email was clicked on.  The site the link was associated with had more links, but none were clicked on there. Besides the unwanted email address of the sender, there was other obvious evidence it was illicit email such as off beat content, and similarly so the web site that the clicked-on link was associated with.
Results:  The web email was signed off and shortly later signed on to in order to get to the Inbox.  The https in the address window of the signed on to email inbox has a red, diagonal line across it. Just the https has this. Normal functioning inside the email was possible.   After signing off, another (clean) computer was used to open the same email account and experienced no red, diagonal line across the https.  The first computer continues to have the red, diagonal line across the https.  Care has been taken not to sign into bank accounts or on line shopping, etc.

Hi mickjapa108,Welcome to Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal (VTSMR) forum. I am going to assist you with your problem. Please refrain from making any changes to your system (scanning or running other tools, updating Windows, installing applications, removing files, etc.) from now on as it might interfere with our fixes. Please let me know in your next reply if you agree with this.Your log(s) show that you are using so called peer-to-peer or file-sharing programs. These programs allow to share files between users as the name(s) suggest. In today's world the cyber crime has come to an enormous dimension and any means is used to infect personal computers to make use of their stored data or machine power for further propagation of the malware files. A popular means is the use of file-sharing tools as a tremendous amount of prospective victims can be reached through it.It is therefore possible to be infected by downloading manipulated files via peer-to-peer tools and thus suggested to be used with intense care. I have gone through all the steps to clean and protect my computer (Windows XP Dell) and thought I was really clever. Took me best part of a day. However, my partner can't now connect to the internet from his laptop, (also running Windows XP), and I am about to fall asleep trying to suss out how to find the IP address of the laptop to add to the trusted zone of Zone Alarms: which keeps flashing up messages that various addresses are trying to access my ports!! Help, before I lose all credibility. My computer is now trussed up like a turkey, and I am about to become single again. My computer is about to become disposable.Computer dunce (PS - read the tutorials about TCP and UDP. I thought TCP was good for cuts and bruises? )Moderator Edit: Moved topic to more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

A:Unable To Add Laptop To Trusted Zone In Zone Alarm

I'm in the same situation, and have learned a few things. Go to Start > Run >cmd. In the black box, type ipconfig. This will give you the ip address of the computer you're on, as well as the gateway ip address of the wireless router. I also have zonealarm firewall, so I added the ip address to the trusted zone. You may also want to check your wireless router's info because depending on the security you've set, it may ask you for a code (WEP or WPA). Let's start here and see what happens. Sounds like this will be one for many inputs...

I have tried for about a day to remove these links on my clients computer, all malware has been removed, using Vipre rescue and Malwarebytes. I have searched the forums to find a way to remove, and HJT won't removed them. I have performed this muliple times in safe and normal mode, run Ccleaner to removve the temp files. This recurring symptoms are this hp.ierediect coming up in IE, I have downgraded to IE7 and the symptoms just now seem to have gone away but still can't get rid of the enties in the HJT scan.
I was hoping there might be a way to remove this from the registry but all postings are Win XP and the keys don't seem to exist in Vista.

As per TMacK's instructions I am moving my thread from the "AntiVirus, Firewall and Privacy Products and Protection Methods" forum to here.

I have been really happy with the security that Zone Alarm has offered me so far, but I do have a few gripes with it as of late. If I try to open Firefox while Zone Alarm is running, I will get a "this page cannot be displayed" type error. Same thing if I use Internet Explorer. If I keep refreshing or restarting Internet Explorer it will eventually work. Only them am I able to open Firefox and get it to connect (let me know if that doesn't make any sense). Sometimes I have to shut down Zone Alarm to connect to the internet on either browser and this gets quite annoying. I want to keep the security it brings, but it can e quite a hassle. It also either takes forever or won't allow me to log in to websites like MySpace.com. Does anyone know how I can fix this? Thank you in advance for all of your help .

Hello slyblackdragon,I see you have an open HJT log posted in the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum. You shouldn't make any changes to your system, while your HJT log is posted, as that could change the results of the posted log, making it difficult to properly clean your system. At this point, the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.I'm closing this topic until you are cleared by the HJT Team. If, after your log has been cleaned, you still need help, please PM a Moderator and we will re-open this topic. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to send me a PM.

Anyone else have trouble with MSN messenger and Zone Alarm. I just switched to cable and am using Zone Alarm as a temporary firewall while i wait for my new router to arrive. But, like the last time I used Zone Alarm (about two years ago), MSN Messenger struggles to connect and stay connected. It took me ages to track the problem back to Zone Alarm last time (reinstalling, reimaging, reformatting etc). I actually have to uninstall ZA instead of just disabling it (which i obviously tried). MSN is set to have full access to all zones in the program control panel.
Its more curiosity now, as my new router should be arriving today and I will use that firewall instead.

I can't help you with ZA, but try using Kerio Personal Firewall. You have 30 days trial period.

When I turn on computer, I get warning from Spy Sweeper and Ad-Watch, that Zone Labs wants to start up with Windows. I don't have anything from Zone Labs. Can it be part of anything else I might run, like EZ Armor from Computer Assoc? I remove it from start up menu and it continues to reappear. I find nothing from Zone Labs in Add/Remove.

Any thoughts?

OK so maybe not totally but I live in a very rural area and am having problems getting any form of usable internet.

A. We have dial-up but as expected, it's pretty much useless for many things and there's no cable lines anywhere for miles.

B. DSL (think that's the term) is unavailable because we are too far from the Bell central equipment = signal degrades and won't work. This is frustrating because towns only 15 minutes away have access.

C. Cell coverage is almost non-existent at the house. We can get texts sometimes but any conversations on cells is dicy at best.

D. Satellite is an option (but costly) but I'm told it won't work for things like skype which is one of the main reasons I want upgraded service. They are also *******s with contracting - if we move within 3 years I'm on the hook for the whole contract.

E. Wireless net connection generally, I am told is also not an option due to geography and vegetation.

So does anyone have ANY ideas about how to fix this? Right now I have to drive to a wifi point 15-20 minutes away just to get on skype and it's getting pretty tiring.

My only idea right now is to buy a cell signal booster (about $3-400) and try to hook in that way but I am told the cost for that service is huge and again, that it may not work well anyway. We need to be able to run two laptops and maybe a couple of other devices.

I'm getting desperate here. Any help appreciated. Thanks

f-secure is an anti-virus program, whereas Zone Alarm is just a firewall. What was the problems that you had with those two?

However, did you fully remove f-secure? If you're not sure, take a look at this:

Do you have ZoneAlarm Pro 3 or 4?

can't link to this bit, but can copy/paste:

First, check in the upper right-hand corner of the ZoneAlarm Window. You should see an “All Systems Active” message in green letters (to the right of the lock). If the panel is displaying “All systems Active” and ZoneAlarm is still not functioning properly, it is possible that some files have become corrupt. To repair this problem, please follow the steps in this article.

Hi, you guys were so kind to help me out last time, I'm hoping someone can help me this time.

During the last debacle of the vcclient I installed ZoneAlarm free firewall. Since then, I have had the following problems:

1) Can connect on IE for a few minutes, then nothing. I can connect continuously through all other programs; aim, yahoo, games, etc.

2) unable to OPEN ZA. Nothing comes up. I can't turn it on or off.

3) Unable to UNINSTALL ZA. Says something about not being able to run vsmon.exe.

4) Unable to perform manual uninstall as listed on the ZA website.

I have to get this off of there, it's driving me INSANE.

I recently had to go into the BIOS and noticed that two of the fans are running at 400RPM and are denoted in red.

I called ASUS, but the rep was clueless.

Is it something to be concerned about?

Check your fan settings in the BiOS.
400 RPM is too low IMHO.

I believe this one is a hard one. I will try to provide as much info as possible. I have a labtop which ws given to me from my school. My school has a wireless set up which uses Novell. At home I have a wireless Windows setup. So I attempted to make my school labtop get on board with my home PCs. At first everything worked out for the best without much setup needed. My labtop showed that it detected the wireless network and it connected to it and to the internet. All of a sudden for one reason or the other during a online game my MSN Zone connection will be terminated and right after it disconnects me my wireless network connection is gone. But a second later it pops up again. But it says something like "you have two wireless networks to choose from". Im not sure where the other one came from but I know that one is garbage. I am using a wirless linksys router and everytime I sign on with my labtop instead of going through their novell setup which is password protected I just log on as a windows workstation. If anyone knows any problem I am overlooking feel free to help!

On the other hand lol, I know and respect the helpers on this site enough to know that if no one answers that it was a bit much to ask! Dont worry about it! (im serious)

Hi all, hopefully someone can help me out with a slight problem and I am posting the correct forum!

Ok we have Windows 7 laptops runing IE8, all controlled with Group Policy and a Site to Zone Assignment list to control IE traffic. We also use SharePoint, and all SharePoint entries are in the S2Z list as Intranet Sites (1) and we have external access from any outside connection to these sites, so you can log on to your home PC and access https://++++++++.++++++++++.org and then sign in with your AD credentials.

The issue is that any of our company Win7 laptops try to access this URL with IE8 while on an external network they get page cannot be displayed, and any other Browser or non work laptop it works OK. Seems obvious as the GP that was last applied to the laptop set this URL as 1 (intranet Site) and when trying to load off the LAN it is 3 (internet Site).

I have been advised that as the FQDN for the URL is being applied by GP, it should still pick this up when off line and recognize as a safe site and load ? is this true? Any help please?

A:Site to Zone

While I am not positive, I'm fairly sure you are correct.

GP is pushing the internal site name to the corporate win7 PCs and when these laptops are outside they probably need to manually add the site as it is supposed to be "from the outside"

You should be able to add the outside address to AD and it will propagate out the next time these machines connect.

Obviously test this on your laptop first.
