Preferred Solution: Having a weird external disk causing problems

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello forum.

ps:im getting that notice:check your backup disk space!

Post a screenshot of Windows Disk Management that shows that the hard drive in question is "empty" as you say.

Are you sure that your backups are being directed to this "empty" drive?

Hello everyone
I have 2 problems
please help
I have a problem with my Windows

my start up time is so big from a while and I don't know why
I have some nice widgets that showing to me the CPU utilization and RAM utilization
also shows me disk usage

I find that my CPU is always 2 to 15% and my RAM is 18% or something (While start up)

but I find that my disk usage graph is always full and stays like that for a while

so that I can use my PC normally after something like 4 minutes from starting the PC

is there's a utility to know which program is using the disk that much ?
or how can I stop that ?

I have a 6GB DDR3 RAM and I also have Windows 7 64bit
which is supposed to be able to address the 6 GB fine with no problems

suddenly I found out that in my system overview the memory is
6GB (2.00GB usable)

once before it was 4GB usable

and don't know how solve that :S

BIOS Settings are fine (I Suppose) cause I can't find an option to limit the amount of RAM or something

so please help

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Firstly please excuse me if I'm in the wrong place or broken any rules! Noob alert!

ok, I currently have two 2tb verbatim usb3 external HDD. one works perfectly and the other has recently started giving me BSOD for some strange reason. I tried to format the drive and that is when it all started. now whenever i power up the drive it crashes the pc straight away. Pc will not boot with drive turned on. The other 2tb drive works just fine. Dead drive? well I sent the drive to verbatim (seagate barracuda) under warrranty to be repaired and recieved it two days ago. I plugged it in, powered up and all was fine. I then went into disk management to format the drive to NTFS and bang....BSOD and drive is completely invisible and as soon as its powered on it crashes the pc. I already have no hair left so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh one more thing, before returning the drive to verbatim i tried it on another pc and had the same problem. I have been unable to try this with the new/supposedly fixed drive as yet.

I installed Desktop Sidebar and after I did the Win+D command would hide windows, the sidebar and the startbar. So, I thought, not to worry, just uninstall DS and it is gone! Not right. I still have this problem. Also: Clicking the Show Desktop icon does the same thing. I can temporarily fix it (make the startbar re-appear) by pressing Win+D again or opening a folder (apparently opening a folder will make my startbar appear)

Please help!

A:Windows+D command causing weird problems

My bet would be that the program altered the shortcut mapping. There may have been an option in the program to reverse this which should have been selected prior to uninstalling.
In XP you may just be able to run system restore and restore to just before you installed the bad program.

Here's the situation.

I have a NEC-2510A in USB 2.0 enclosure (thus making it an external drive that sits on top of my computer).

For some reason (i've tested this with two types of media - DVD-R 2x OFF NAME BRAND and DVD+R 4x TDK), when these blank medias are in the drive, my computer doesn't even recognize them. If I go to open the drive, it says "Please insert disc into drive D" as if no disc were already in it.

The drive burns well when it burns (it can burn with nero, roxio, dvd cloner II, but for some reason DVD SHRINK will not recognize any disc, just as windows doesn't).

Also, for DVDs i've already burned, when putting them into the drive, only rarely show up or are recognized.
Would all these problems be fixed if I just put it inside my computer and take off the usb enclosure. Is it faster inside my computer than external Via USB 2.0??

Please someone help ASAP!!!!!!!!!!

oh, there is an air condition in the window that blows almost directly onto the dvd burner (which sits on top my comptuer). I doubt this would case any problems - in fact i would think it would run better when cool. The usb enclosure case is made of aluminum so this sucker stays really cool.

oh and also, dvd movies i've copied with DVD CLONER II stop on my dvd player exactly at 120 minutes, even if the movie isn't finished. for exmaple, i burned FAST AND THE FURIOUS, which is only 107 minuts, but the copied version stops at a still image at 120 mi... Read more

A:external DVD BURNER causing problems, please help! now!

I'm confused, if the drive burns with Nero, can you always read the resultant disk? If so, just have DVD-Shrink process to the hard disk and burn the video files from there.

Yes, all of the previews and other junk on a DVD count as data.

Obviously, one debugging technique would indeed be to connect the drive directly to and internal IDE channel to see if that changes the behavior, and I'd give it a try...

I recently purchased Western Digital's 1TB My Book External Hard Drive....as you may know, it has no on / off switch. It just powers up with the computer or when it is plugged into the computer.

I have it plugged into my Sony Vaio (not sure which version off the top of my head....bought it new in 2004), but the problem I'm having is that my CPU gets stuck on the "VAIO" graphic upon startup or when returning form hibernation. I'm assuming this is a Windows problem but I'm not sure. Is it looking to the External HD for some kind of bootup command or something? Is there a quick fix to this?

I'm not CPU illiterate but I'm far from an expert. Any suggestions or info would be greatly appreciated and I'll be glad to answer any more questions about my system if needed.

Thanks guys.

Hey everyone,I'm new here and any help I can get will be greatly appreciated.

I have a Vista Home Premium 64 bit sp1 desktop PC from Asus,it's about 3 years old,and has never had a problem.

Now,yesterday I ran Disk Cleanup for the 1st time since I've had the PC.After it ran and deleted about 11 GB's on content, after restarting, some programs including Windows Update,System Restore,Games(the installed Windows games like chess, solitaire etc). However all my personal files, pictures, videos,Windows Media player,RealPlayer,VLC,Open Office,Cakewalk, all still work fine. Also on startup, after typing in my password,it logs on immediately, but the taskbar, icons, and backround image take about a minute to load.

I have absolutely no idea what is going on,but since it's still running well for the most part,I would doubt that it's serious.

Thanks to anyone who can help!!

When I shut down the other day (Win 7 ultimate 64bit), there were 30 updates to be applied. when I restarted my system yesterday morning, there was an error message about my hard disk eventually failing. Is there a possible relationship here? I have been trying to clone this hard disk (tried the backup\restore image copy and Seagate diskwizard), they have both failed. I have rebooted multiple times with no problems. Did computer\disks\properties\tools\fix clusters etc (does a report go somewhere), the system rebooted automatically after. Not sure if I am having a registry or hardware problem. I am wonderig if I should go back to a restore point.

When I connect an external hard drive to my laptop it takes around 3 minutes to be recognized. When it is it takes AGES to transfer anything - a small jpeg takes another few minutes and larger things like a 20MB game take forever that is if they transfer at all! My entire PC freezes, the copied files have vanished somewhere and don't show up on the drive and things that have transferred like a small photo take minutes to load up and view!
This happens with other hard drives too so it's not a piece of damaged hardware!
I've never had this problem before - on other PCs in the past all's been fine!
The external hard drive has it's own power supply, spins up and is connected by a USB 2 port. I've tried other ports too with the same problems!

You might want to run a diagnostic check on your external hard drive to see if that fall damaged it. You could check on the manufacturer's website for a diagnostic tool or you could run SeaTools from Seagate.

SeaTools for Windows | Seagate

If any issues are discovered it may be time to save your data and replace the hard drive.

Try the thing with another computer or at least another operating system (a Live CD?).

Take the hard drive out of the enclosure and see if it works when connected directly inside a computer.

ZAR lets you restore 4 folders at a time for free I believe, so you can throw that at the disk when everthing else fails.

Hi,Bit of background first, my old harddrive , which was split into  C and D ,approx. 500 gig each, went Kaput, had it replaced with an SSD(at my request because I heard they don't overheat and are faster) by an experienced computer technician, and no longer  having to deal with split drives suited me fine.I only  have half the storage space now, about 500Gg in comparison to 1,000 Gg,  but cost was a factor at the time, SSD's being so expensive.Very happy with the new SSD, speed etc. My operating system is Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit , SP1. My backups were all stored on a Goflex external harddrive, which  the technician accidentally  dropped on the floor, he then replaced this with an external drive with an on/off switch. (Pleased about the on/off switch, the other didn't have one, very upset about the dropping my other one). All working fine, doing my backups to my new external drive  he gave me, using  my Acronis True Image software 2015 version, that I had always used.My old external  drive was set up to drive E, and all my previous backups in Acronis show drive E, so perhaps this is why the technician set this new one up to Drive F, not sure. And maybe this is why I got the error message below? Well, in my infinite wisdom (which with computer technology isn't great I must admit) I suddenly decided I wanted to backup to an external drive with the letter E,(E for External seemed so much mor... Hello sevenforums.
I have a problem that i hope somebody here can help me fix.
one of my old disks that i want to remove is marked as the system disk even though my OS is not installed there and i need to mark my other disk as system disk.
i want to remove the old disk to make way for newer disks, but simply removing the disk causes boot errors, can anybody tell me how to mark my other disk as the system disk?

A:The wrong disk is marked as a system disk, causing complication.

Do you have a Windows Recovery CD or USB ready ?
If yes then just remove the 'old disk.

In BIOS set disk you want to be the 'new' system disk as first disk (if more than one disk)
Boot recovery media. Run 'Automatic Repair'.
If repair reports errors that cannot be fixed, go to command promt and type:
bootsect /nt60 all /mbr

I have an average background with networking and tried to search online but I couldn't find a solution for this problem.

I have a WiFi in my home, when this laptop is under normal load, say like streaming a 360p youtube video, all the computers in my home will experience a huge lag and it becomes impossible to surf or do any internet activity (even the causing laptop itself will experience huge pings). The weird part is that the lag is at the LAN level, it is not related to my internet bandwidth. Because when I ping my local router ( with other PCs during the lag period, I get 1000-4000 ms. However, it is usually 1 ms.

I tried doing a stress test on one of my normal laptops by downloading at maximum speed, the problem did not occur, there was no lag, all my PCs did not encounter that lag and I still get 1 ms when pinging the router. It is only this laptop that when it starts downloading, my network will be flooded.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Here are some information about the laptop and router

OS: MS windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit
System manufacturer: Lenovo
CPU: Intel Core i7-2620M 2.70 GHz, 2cores
network adapter: 1c1 11b/g/n Wireless LAN PCI express half Mini Card Adapter

I've run a test on the RAM, but it seems to come up clean.
Might be my Antivirus (Avira?)
So the last two bluescreens happened like this:

I was playing Garrys mod, on skype, screen froze. Bam, bluescreen.
Next, was opening adobe after effects, on skype. And it froze, said it wasn't responding and maybe 5 seconds later, bluescreen.

Although, not all happened during skype. Some even while i was asleep (4am)

Ok so I have a new install of my OS onto my Patriot Pyro SSD. For the windows updates I just did a massive install, 77+ windows updates at one single time plus another 30+ or so the next day. I think I remember some errors while doing those massive updates, I did not look them up or even care about them.

What is currently happening is that while using my computer for browsing and email, JTV ect, this is a fairly high end gaming PC but I am not playing any games currently nor does it crash while under stress, it seemed only while browsing. But what happened was that all of a sudden my youtube video froze from then firefox stopped responding. When I tried to click to another window like windows taskmanager or iTunes those and any other program proceeded to crash and end up in the "blank" program has stopped responding, until eventually my whole OS seemed to crash in the same way. Nothing opened up or even closed. My whole desktop was in the unresponsive state.

Now I think my brother had a similar problem with one program crashing and the proceeding until the OS crashed and forced to restart the PC. He re-installed his OS and did not install updates, he had 0 problems until he installed the updates. Note he is on vista 64 and I am on windows 7 64.

So what I would like to know is because I mass installed updates and had some errors I did not look into that may be my problem?

Instead of reinstalling my OS can i just uninstall all of my updates and proceed to install ... Read more

So as of late I've been getting slow Wi-Fi speeds. I tried to solve the problem by updating all of my drivers to no avail. One odd observation that I notice though is whenever I try to update my drivers using Intel Driver Update Utility, Network Adapter/Bluetooth drivers specifically keep popping up even though in the previous test runs, I just downloaded and installed those same drivers, so I concluded that the main issue is definitely with the weird drivers. I'm also sure that the router isn't the culprit because the Wi-Fi speed is fine on other devices and the signal strength is at maximum whenever I use the Wi-Fi on this particular laptop.

Thanks for your help in advance.

For the last few days, I've had sporadic instances of DNS resolution failing on this win7-64 machine, when other computers in the house aren't having that problem and the dsl connection is fine. At these times, the win7 box can still ping sites. I know people with virtual wi-fi adaptors see similar symptoms; I don't have any such adaptors installed.

Moreover, a few times since the DNS failure problem started, there have been error messages from Windows that strangely named .exe files have stopped running. The last one was "vhbmtk.exe"; both it and the prior name (didn't write it down) were ungooglable filenames, which made me suspicious. The error messages all indicated the ntdll.dll was the fault module.

Sophos rootkit scan found nothing, MSE virus detection hasn't gone off, and Malwarebytes found and removed the "vknt.exe" keylogger from the winamp plugin "morphyre", which may have been a false positive. I've never actually run that visualizer since it was installed many months ago.

Looking at the system logs for warnings about name resolution failure, there were a few back in december, but the frequency really shoots up on Jan 20.

DDS log follows, with hijackthis and attach.txt attached.

hi all,

i would like to ask you a very basic question:

What is the difference between an external hard disk and an internal hard disk mounted on external enclosure?

Is using internal hard disk in external enclosure risky in terms of loosing the data?

Is using internal hard disk in external enclosure reliable to use?

kindly let me know as there is a vast difference in the price of these hard disks. The external hard disk is costing more and if i use internal hard disk in external enclosure price is very much reduced.

my only concern about using internal hard disk in external enclosure is the reliability.

thanks in advance,

Okay, a little background. I have two SATA drives with files on them, both 250gb. one has windows and my personal files, one has movies. I got an external enclosure which came with an e-sata bracket, and i plugged that in to a different sata port than my movies hard drive was plugged in to, installed my movies drive in the enclosure, booted up.

windows logo shows up BRIEFLY after post, then bluescreens. instant restart. I change my e-sata bracket to be plugged into the sata connection my movies HD used to use, and it works fine, though no hot swap (my mobo doesn't support it, but that's okay).

I go on vacation, and use the external's USB connecting capabilities to hook it up to my laptop. everything works fine, hot swaps perfect because it's usb.
I come back from vacation, try to boot my computer up. Bluescreens like it originally did after post. I plug in the hard drive via e-sata, turn it on, turn my comp on, it still bluescreens. My vista install CD won't recognize my OS in the repair center anymore, and I'm thinking it has ****** up my MBR or something like that...

Forgive my language, I was a bit hot-headed at the time, and it slipped out. Couldn't figure out how to edit my post so I'll add a little bit of context to this post so as to adhere to rules a little more.

I moved my E-sata connector to a different sata connector on my mobo, and now it works fine. It feels like whenever i change it the slightest bit though, it will do the same thing again. Anyone know why it is doing this?

Recently, whenever I plug in my WD My Passport 750gb external hard drive into my PC, I get a massive lag spike that lasts around 30 seconds (it basically freezes the computer). Although this is not a massive problem, it does get quite annoying, as I am often plugging and unplugging the drive from my system.

You can check my specs on my profile, but basically, I would have thought that my rig could handle such a simple task without a hitch (I have an i5-3570K).

I checked my CPU usage when I plug the drive in, and this is what I got:

One of my cores jumps to nearly 100%, and the others are unaffected, as well as memory usage.

Is this what is causing the lag, and is this normal? I'm just curious, if anybody has a solution it would be greatly appreciated.

Additional Information: I use the drive both as a backup for windows and for transporting large files (movies, music, photos etc) between PC's. It's around half full at the moment, and I'm using a USB 3.0 port (although the lag still occurs on 2.0 ports).

A:External drive causing lag

I get this sometimes after using storage intensive apps and games. I recently experienced this after playing Planetside 2 for a few hours. My computer was really laggy and it was making me nervous. I am not sure how to help you here man, but I experience similar issues but not with an external HDD.

I will enclose here my complaint which I send to motherboard maker Gigabyte, regarding USB external hard disk problem. Please read it and if anybody knows how to solve this, thanks.
My computer has external hard drive connected to USB 2.0 port(s), which is extremely slow. Drive is Transcend StoreJet. No drivers exist for it. It works perfectly for other I/O operations like copy, paste, delete, etc. When I try to make hard disk image with any program, and store it on Transcend Store Jet, speed starts with 50MB/s but drops to nearly zero in few minutes. You can see example on attached picture. It is the same with any program. Disk image would take more than one day to complete, if it completes at all. Actually, I never managed to finish image with any disk imaging software. I tried all usual software for that: Paragon, Aomei, Acronis, EaseusToDo, Drive XML, etc. Are there any USB or other drivers which are responsible for this issue? Can Gigabyte be serious regarding its costumers and provide them solution in order to use USB ports for most important thing (backup)? In this case, making disk image is totally impossible. USB 2.0 ports have speed оf 480 Mbit/s, theoretical. This is far cry from situation here. So, ... Read more

Imaging your 150 Gig via Usb will take time { Mine are about 40-50 Gig } Operating System And Programs Only.
I personally partition my main Drive eg: c:\ and d:\ and so only the operating system is on C;\
Then use the D;\ to store your personal files. , this way your c:\ wont keep growing in size as you are storing everything there.
If you cant actually do anything with the computer because of warranties as you stated "just serviced" , ask them why you cant Image Drive.
1/ Try another hard drive to backup to.{ Usb will always be slower } than directly connected to Mobo.
2/ Use Mini Tool Partition Wizard [ Free } to create another partition - http://www.partitionwizard.com/partitionmagic/partition-windows-7-system.html
3/ Remove all Temp Files / Restore Points / etc with Ccleaner { Free ] - https://www.piriform.com/CCLEANER
this will reduce C:\ size to minimal size { defrag drive also }.
4/ Use any program to Image C:\ { I use Acronis }. to the D:\ Backup Folder.
5/ Then copy the image to any portable drive or external if need be.
6/ Use the D:\ for your personal files and folders as a backup also.
Sometimes you have to do things yourself - than rely on Service Centres and Costs.
If you run a Business then you claim all your costs incurred.
All this will take time but you will have backups and feel at ease.

Couple of hours ago my Windows 7 could not recognize my external USB hard disk (Maxtor Basic). It came up on Disk Management and Device Manager but not on My Computer. However I fixed it (by deleting its line off regedit in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices, plugging out the ext. HD and plugging back in). Windows automatically installed the drivers and I could access the drive.

But now Windows shows my Maxtor as a fixed disk drive, instead of "devices with removable storage". I still have the option to "Safely remove hardware and eject media" from taskbar, however I rather have Windows treating it as a Removable USB Storage so that the disk can sleep when not in use. I am pretty sure it has something to do with regedit, so any help would be appreciated.

A:USB external hard disk shows up as internal fixed disk

Welcome to Windows 7 Support Forums, Sactyr.
A word of caution! Its never a good idea to alter your register,
IMHO please review your device manager and check your devices for your disk drives, check for any warnings in the driver area.
I'm attaching my screenshot for comparison as I have a similar configuration.

I have a problem regarding my external Toshiba hard disk 500 GB where it can?t be detected in my computer and also disk management. I have formatted the external HD since I was asked to format it when an error popped up.
So I formatted it and after the formatting completed, I tried to connect the hard disk to my Windows Win 7 laptop. When I connect it to the laptop, it can?t be detected and yet the hard disk is blinking with its white light like it used to when it is connected to the laptop. I tried the disk management thingy, but it can?t detect my hard disk. I tried in other laptops but the result is same
What can I do to make it better? Please help me.

A:External hard disk not detected in My Computer and in Disk Management

First off, how old is your Toshiba external HDD? Also, when it starts to spin up, do you hear any sort of clicking or whining noise?

If you hear any noises that sound off, it's possible your external HDD is failing.

When you formatted it, what file system did you use to do so? Because sometimes even if Windows can't detect it, I have had success with booting with a Ubuntu Live CD, and then connecting the external HDD in order to format it that way. It all has to do with how Windows formats HDD's and how Ubuntu and other Linux systems do.

If you can I recommend downloading Ubuntu onto a CD and boot to it on one of your computers, in the Live CD mode, so it doesn't install anything. Once its loaded, plug in the Toshiba and try to format it as NTFS (this is important, because Ubuntu doesn't use it as a native file system, so you need to make sure that NTFS is selected on the format window, not EXT4 or the other types of Linux OS File Systems)

If it doesn't work, post back here, and I will see if I can help you some more. Also feel free to PM me if you have any other issues.

I have a HDD 750G with 2 partitions NTFS with data.
used externally in a USB3 box connected to my windows 8.1 asus laptop.

No idea what I do, I always use 'eject' before disconnecting this HDD, but now I see that with diskpart :

DISKPART> list disk
Disk ### Status Size Free Dyn Gpt
-------- ------------- ------- ------- --- ---
Disk 0 Online 238 GB 1024 KB *
Disk 1 Online 22 GB 0 B *
* Disk 2 Online 698 GB 611 GB
DISKPART> list volume
Volume ### Ltr Label Fs Type Size Status Info
---------- --- ----------- ----- ---------- ------- --------- --------
Volume 0 E DVD-ROM 0 B No Media
Volume 1 C OS NTFS Partition 49 GB Healthy Boot
Volume 2 D Data NTFS Partition 167 GB Healthy
Volume 3 SYSTEM FAT32 Partition 100 MB Healthy System
Volume 4 Recovery NTFS Partition 900 MB Healthy Hidden
Volume 5 Restore NTFS Partition 20 GB Healthy Hidden

so disk 2 is there, but no volume, no partition, no drive letter. just a 'bip' sound when I connect the disk to usb port.

i try with paragon disk manager or aomei partition assistant, but can't assign a drive letter (option greyed)
how can I do to get 2 drive letters & access my datas ?

thanks for help

A:External disk : diskpart shows disk but no drive letter

What does Win8 Disk Management show for that drive? If it shows as "raw" in the list, and it won't let you assign a drive letter, it could be that the drive has failed.

If I am saving a backup to internal hard disk vs USB 3.0/2.0 USB external hard disk

1. Backing up to an internal 3.5 hard disk vs backing up to an external 2.5 hard disk using USB 3.0, roughly how much extra time would the external backup need to complete the backup process?

2. Backing up to an internal 3.5 hard disk vs backing up to an external 2.5 hard disk using USB 2.0, roughly how much extra time would the external backup need to complete the backup process?

A:Speed of saving to internal hard disk vs USB 3.0/2.0 external disk?

There's no definitive answer, it would all depend on which internal drives you had (SSD/HDD, SATA 6GB, SATA 3GB) and which external drives you had and their relative transfer speeds. It's all just guesswork without that info.

Just as the tittle says, i got my laptop's disk out of it, conected to an external HDD adapter, came to my windows 8.1 desktop pc, copied about 203 gb of data to the disk, then i put the disk back to the laptop, windows Technical Preview launches and when i go to the folder that is supposed to be the files there is nothing. Everytime I hook up an External USB HD to my computer, after using it for about a minute, it will just do a cold restart. I I've used 2 different USB External HD Cases (I dont know the brands), and 2 different HD's. Both HD works on different comp setups, as do both HD Cases. Whereas reinstalling my OS may fix the problem (since they both work on other comps), I'd rather that be my last resort. I'm running Win XP SP2 (current updates). Just upgraded to an AMD 4200+ X2, Asus mobo, 1gb dual channel ram, etc. The system runs perfectly fine if it wasn't for anytime I want to use a usb external HD case, it'll crash. Mini-usb thumb drives work fine. I've also tried using every single usb port with the cases. I've also tried using them in safe mode. Reformatting doesn't work, which by the way I can only get through a quick reformat before it restarts, otherwise a full format it'll restart at about 5% done. But like said, I've used them (reformatted, and even played games off the HD) on other rigs. Pretty much at my wits end on what the problem could be. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a ton.

Oh, I also made sure under system performance that "restart computer" is unchecked when an error occurs. Still no error msg though, just cold restart.

My PC can run from 5 minutes to 4-6 hours then it will randomly shut off (no errors, just blacks out suddenly; nothing in event log) when my External Harddrives are connected via USB.

I disconnected them and it ran for 20 hours straight without shutting off, so I believe they are the problem.

I saw this thread: http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/537354-external-hard-drive-causes-computer-2.html

But I wasn't going to follow that advice as I have a USB mouse and keyboard.

Any ideas what could be wrong?

I have an external hard disk which got corrupted. When i connect the disk through USB it shows as an unknown device in the disk management with no option to format.

In My computer the device is showing as H: drive but unable to access it. It asks if i want to format or not but when i go for format it does not do it. I want to erase the disk completely as of now. What should i do??

I tried to load it from linux but there it shows as Device Error. Disk Failure is Imminent.

Can something be done or is it a hardware failure.

A:External Hard disk showing as RAW in disk management

Sounds like the drive is failing or the circuitry in the enclosure is faulty.

I would first remove the drive from the enclosure and hook it up as a slave to a desktop PC. See if you can then access it. If you can, then post back for further instructions with the version of your OS.

Okay so here is the issue. A buddy of mine is having issues with his External Western Digital Harddrive. The Harddrive is a 1Tb. His laptop is a HP Netbook Mini 210-1180NR. When ever he plugs his external into his computer he instantly gets BSD. He has plugged my two Externals, A Toshiba and A Seagate, no BSD they loaded with no problem. I plugged his External (WD) into my Dell Latitude E6420 ATG and it loaded up with no problems. This WD external works on all other laptops except his (HP Netbook). We have unistalled all programs dealing with Western Digital and I have looked at many forums with no luck. All of the machines Have Windows 7 Installed. Any help to this problem will be greatly appreciated, as myself or any of my IT buddies have had zero luck.

A:Western Digital external Harddrive Causing BSD

Is there anything on this drive that needs to be kept or can you backup anything on it to another?

What is the exact model of the WD unit? Some of these units come with a special virtual disc that contains additional features or the software, and sometimes that can cause problems, I'd probably recommend remove of it but it requires a special utility. WD also releases firmware for some of their drives too, it may need one of those updates.

Hey, a while back I posted here with a problem where my mouse unexpectedly started freezing/stuttering, rendering this laptop near unusable. The problem dissapeared after about a week and a half later though. And today, when I went to plug in my external HDD (2TB Western Digital Elements), the mouse stuttering came back...
Why is this? now I have a drive sitting there that I [almost] can't use. I spend most of my time on my laptop rather than my desktop because my sister needs the desktop to play the Sims 3 (had problems with the launcher on the laptop). No mouse stuttering on my desktop though.

Windows 7 SP1 x86
Avira Free Antivirus and Comodo Free Firewall

Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.26GHz
AMD Mobility Radeon 3650, 512MB
391GB internal HDD

And I also tested my brother's external HDD (1TB WD Elements), and it has the same problem. My portable 500GB Seagate GoFlex drive doesn't cause any stuttering though.

Hello. I just got a brand new Fantom Drives Green Drive (1 TB) and when I turn on my computer, it freezes up at the boot sequence when the drive is left on (it has a power switch and doesn't turn off automatically w the computer). When I turn the drive off it will boot up fine, then I have to turn it on and have the computer reread everything, which I hope I don't have to do every time. I sent an email to the technical support and they told me to make sure the BIOS settings is not set to boot to USB, so I changed that and it worked fine for a couple of times, but now it's doing it again. They said to consult the motherboard manufacturer (it's a D865PERL), but I thought ask to see what you guys thought. I appreciate any advice.

A:New external hd causing comp to not boot properly

Normally if you save the Bios setting in which you have elected to boot the internal hard disk before the USB disk then your problem should never happen.

However pulling the USB disk in and out can upset/change the Bios setting in some motherboards so every time the system doesn't boot check your Bios's booting queue.

It all started with a 4.3GB file. I attempted to move this file on to my 1.5TB external HDD when windows told me the file was to large. I searched on google and learned about FAT32 and NTFS. I wanted to format my HDD to NTFS without losing any of my 600+GB of data so I found a guide.

Convert FAT or FAT32 Volume to NTFS

Everything went off without a hitch and I later went to bed. When I awoke today I found my hard drive has pulled a Houdini. It will not show up in my computer, however it does show that i have a device plugged in at the bottom of the screen. I have tried giving the HDD a system letter through the control panel but all i see is this..

My drive is considered 4 drives or something to that effect. I don't know if it is always like that or not. All i know is i cannot give it a system letter or access the files on it in any way.
Any ideas?

Hello dsmith, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Please go ahead and post a screenshot showing the full layout of your Disk Management with the external drive connected to see if it may help show what the issue is.

If you have not already, try connecting the drive to a different USB connector to see if there may be an issue with the one you did use.
