Preferred Solution: Wifi wont work on desktop x64 hp pc but will work on laptop.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So I accidently bent my Belkin surf and share WiFi adapter on my desktop, and the internet cut out. I assumed it was broken, so I plugged it into my laptop and turned the wifi switch to off to test it out. Strangely, it worked fine. Then I attempted other USB ports on my tower, none of them worked. The strange thing is I can see all of the available wifi networks, but can't connect to them. I tried uninstalling the drivers, restarting, and reinstalling but that doesn't seem to work. The chip is fine, as it worked on my laptop, but it refuses to work on the tower.
Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Hi, recently moved into a student house and the wifi has been set up. Just my luck I cant connect to it properly. I have gone onto the connections bit of my computer and entered the code correctly, so it then says connected, it then goes to saying identifying. Everyone else in the house can connect to it, and seems as my laptop is 4/5 years old i'm thinking its something to do with that. Any help would be much appreciated and sorry if i cant explain things properly, im more of a beginner when it comes to computers.

I went to 192.168.2.1, went to Security, chose WAP/WAP2 and AES then I chose a password and a guest password and clicked on Apply changes. Neither the guest nor personal password are working and I can't get into my wifi network. What do I do?

Alright so I have a laptop however I am unable to use its current wifi card for my wifi reciever booster I am making. So I needed a usb connector. I got the RNX-EasyN1. When I first got it I installed the driver off the disk. However I was still unable to get the device to detect any networks or for that matter enable itself in the network connections screen. So I went to their site and got the latest driver. Still did not work. I spent a few hours searching google, reinstalling restarting, and in general doing anything that seemed like the normal procedure when I cant get something to work. Yet here I sit with a wireless adaptor that every one else on google says works perfectly fine, and it wont work for me. Help please.

Hello everyone!

I am new here but not to the repair business. I started fixing in April of last year so computers and phones are my areas. Currently I have a client`s desktop that is having issues with wifi.

The desktop currently only has an ethernet adapter and the client requested to add wifi to it. So I tried the wifi adapter they had purchased and it gave me a message saying the drivers aren`t working. So I took it home and tried my own nano wifi usb adapter and it couldn't find the driver, so I searched and located it. Now, it says the "network adapter is not working properly", so I went and bought an internal wifi adapter card and installed the drivers and the same message came up! The drivers are there and show up in device manager, if I go to change adapter settings I can enable/disable it. However, it still shows an X for the Wifi signal regardless so no wireless networks will show up. Any suggestions? Would you like more info on the desktop?

My home WiFi gateway uses the 802.11 b, g, n. This works well with my present laptop which has a Realtek 802.11 b/g/n Wireless LAN.

I'm thinking of getting a new laptop and the new laptop has only WiFi 802.11 ac. Can this laptop with WiFi 802.11 ac work with my WiFi gateway 802.11 b/g/n?

Ps. The specs of the new laptop is 802.11 ac. There is no b/g/n.

A:Can this laptop WiFi 802.11 ac work?

Yes it should be backwards compatible. You just wont get super super fast speeds that everyone advertises about with wireless AC, because it's stuck with an N access point, which is limiting the maximum throughput.

I've been looking for solutions to this problem but I just can't find one.

So I have a dell it has w7. The internet has been working on here perfectly for the past few years, and a few days ago..I believe it was friday it started randomly not working on and off again. This desktop is a few rooms away from the router so is connected by a really long wire, which has been working fine for a really long time.

Yesterday I tried to fix it myself so I moved the router to the back and it still wouldn't work. It has that red x in the bottom right corner and what it was connected to earlier, when it was going on and off..I for some reason disabled it and thought I could just re enable it but..it now says no nearby connection!! And it just wont find connect to the router or something im not sure what to do.

A:[SOLVED] internet wont work on this desktop

Hi imawesome

Since you might not remember all the changes you made when trying this and that for the last few days, let's try for a simple, easy list to help fix things.

1) See if another PC can connect to the Internet using that same wire. [A wired Internet connection is usually automatically detected by a PC running any recent version of Windows - XP, Vista, or 7]
2) If yes, then there's nothing wrong with your ISP, your router, or your ethernet wire.
3) If no = there's a problem with your ISP, your router, or your ethernet wire.
---a) power off your "helper" computer.
---b) unplug & power off the router for 3 minutes [If there is also a "broadband modem" for DSL, cable, or satellite connected to your router, also power it off for those same three minutes].
---c) *plug the power cord back into the router and power it on *[if you also have the broadband modem, plug the broadband modem in first, and also power it on first]
---d) check the entire length of the ethernet cable for any sign of damage. If you have a spare cable of the same type (usually Cat5/Cat5e/Cat6), you can try that instead.
---e) power on your "helper" computer. If it now connects OK, you can now move on to troubleshooting your original computer.

* if no Internet is detected, nor any local area connection at all -- on any computer -- you may have more extensive troubleshooting to do. First rule out any trouble with your ISP. Give them a quick ... Read more

Hi everyone

I have HP dv7 2015tx running windows 7 (64bit) and I have serious problem with wifi connectivity. in last few months the wifi connection started to malfunction and randomly detect and connect to hotspots. and then it stopped working completely after a while. I tried:

-reinstalling, upgrading .... the wireless driver
-using wifi dongle
-replacing the wifi card with a new one
-.....
and I found these can not help me in this issue. the same thing happened to my blutooth connectivity last year and after I reinstalled the windows it was all fixed. but this time im not planning to reinstall the windows again.
So in my point of view this problem might be fixed if I fix the way windows is detecting any wifi access !! is there any file missing in windows related to this ?!!

Please help me in this matter

Walmart could not find Asus or phone number in their manufacture/products they sell, it just was not in the big book she looked thru.. I  had no wireless for over a month and finally called Verizon support to walk me thru putting in more secure wireless "MAC" address and I have had no connection problems since, I also got in touch with Asus support and they walked me thru a partition or recovery of partial recovery which also helped although I wanted a clean reinstall and a CD sent to do a reinstall but I had to pay $60 for a recovery CD so I am still  waiting as it has not been shipped out and they do not know when but they took my $$..

I'm not sure if this is in the right place, so you can move it if it's not.

I have an Asus K53e-BBR7 laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit.
I've had it for 1.5 years. I didn't have trouble with the WiFi for a few months, but then it started acting up.
I of course factory reset many times, etc, and it didn't help.

There was a cycle: The built-in wasn't working so I put in the dongle. Then, after a while of using the dongle, the built-in WiFi took over/started working, and I could unplug. Anyway, this was a year ago. I took it to Best Buy and they apparently fixed it, but it acted up again the day after I got it, and then worked for a few months before I had trouble with it again.

My hard drive failed so I took it to another computer shop and got a new hard drive, and I think there might be something wrong with the drivers, even though I've installed/uninstalled, downloaded from website and updated, etc.

Now, here's what happens: When turn on my computer for the first time, or wake it up from sleep, the WiFi (built in) doesn't work, it can't connect to any networks. I have to turn off the WiFi antenna with Fn-F2, and then click troubleshoot where it says 'no connections are available' . It then goes through troubleshooting and and then has an option for "turn on wireless capability', I click on it and it turns on the antenna/wireless capability, and it works. This is consistent, I can always get it to work t... Read more

Hi: The hardware ID you posted is for the ethernet (wired network) adapter. You need this W8.1 driver for that device... This package provides the Realtek Local Area Network (LAN) Driver that enables the Realtek Network Interface Card (NIC) Chip in supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp58001-58500/sp58496.exe If the wireless network adapter needs a driver installed, you will see a device in the device manager labeled as a Network Controller. So, post the hardware ID for the Network Controller device, and I will post the link to the wireless driver you need.

Hello fellow Lenovo users.I've searched a bit in the forums in here, and tried some solutions for the aforementioned problem. I'll just mention them for easier help. I can only connect to the internet with cable. All other devices in my home, there is no problem with Wifi, but with my lenovo there is. It's an old company computer, so in the past it was set up VIA the company (i think), but since we got our "own" internet it the computer can't find any wifi's at all. Not at friends and not home, it only works with cable in.I've tried downloading drivers for my internet access. - my problem here is, when i search for drivers on the lenovo site, it can't find my product. 43149tgI've gone into BIOS to see if it was activated.i've downloaded thinkvantage to see if this would help, but to no avail.I'm pretty sure it's something with the lenovo device, and not the internet.Hope you can help.kind regards.

Hi, I have xp home eddition with 4 user accounts. 2 accounts work fine the other 2 are having problems.

The desktop settings will not change. You can click what you want and hit apply but changes will not be made and when you open them up again they are back to where they were (which is different to what they should be).

Same for internet options. They have gone to 'never dial a connection' also cannot change home page etc. In the two problem accounts the internet is inaccessable.

Also when you click 'start' button the whole left hand column is blank.

The whole appearance of the accounts is like half xp style and half classic windows style.

I have done a sytem restore (that wont work) says no changes have been made, run adaware and spybot plus avg virus scan (all were updated).

The 2 working accounts are working perfectly!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Unfortunately I wont be able to try out all the helpful information you are going to give me until tomorrow night.

I hope someone can help.

Thank you

Greetings all, an apologies if this is in the wrong section.

Computer is a home build desktop, Asus M/B, AMD HD6670 graphics, 256meg SSD as boot drive c: Win7 32 bit.

I had a few problems with this computer and finally did a full format and re-install with system disk pre SP1. Everything working fine. Launched into full updates from windows, loaded all available updates and guess what; windows Desktop Manager fails and won't start. Computer is otherwise fine. I've installed latest drivers for the video card, updated my M/B bios, run sfc /scannow which showed all system files OK, full pre boot virus scan with Avast, full scan with Malwarebytes.

I've done all this about five times now. The problem seems to his after installing Iexplorer 10 and/or SP1. I haven't figured that one out yet, and I'd rather have a nearly working computer than one in a constant state of upheaval.

Having been looking around the web for an answer it would seem that this problem is not limited to certain hardware but seems quite happy to occur with just about anything. Any help that solves this will be much appreciated and rewarded with a curry and a beer.

A:Windows Desktop Manager not working, wont work, can't fix.

I would try this:

Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup

See if it continues to fail. You might want to do another Clean Install Windows 7 and then install all windows updates and drivers first. Then Once that is done install your software.

ok , I have a Toshiba MK1637GSX 160GB SATA Laptop HDD which i have been told has failed. I finally got a Sata/Pata converter card (only goes SATA TO PATA) in an attempt to recover the data. When i boot my desktop with my regular HDD (PATA) and the SATA HDD as the secondary, it would detect that it was a Toshiba MK1637GSX but would not boot. SO, I plugged the primary HDD in on its own cable in pl 1 and the SATA on its own cable in pl 2. I then was able to boot!!! The black screen at the boot showed the drive but when windows came up and I checked in MY COMPUTER(XP), the drive was not there. So i then went to ADD NEW HARDWARE and there was no help.
ALSO I have a second PATA HDD that i use to store files so i know i can have more than 1.

Update!: i ordered 3 BRAND NEW 100GB HDDs of the exact same type. I ran the out-of-box-state restore and it installed Windows Vista and set the new HDD as if it was OoB. When laptop restarted, it got to the Windows loading screen and the SD card reader light came on (with no card) and would not progress. I tried putting a card in and removing it, and it then went to CONFIGURING WINDOWS FOR FIRST TIME USE! Afterwards it restarted and got to the loading screen SD light came on and never progressed, even after trying adding/removing card. 2 hrs later, no progress.

I went and disabled some services from running, nothing important, just the ones listed here (very bottom): http://www.computing-tips.com/2008/06/02/how-to-make-windows-xp-run-faster/
I also followed their advice on the BIOS (last paragraph just above Disable GUI Options )

Now my laptop won't show the wireless icon, and won't connect to wifi. Can someone tell me which service may have done this?

Thanks,
Aza

Hi:Hopefully you did not run regcleaner.right ?
Let's start by doing two things:
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc

Please respond to all the following steps.
1. Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed.
2. Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed?
3. Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?

Check your Services are Started on all PCs:
• COM+ Event System (for WZC issues)
• Computer Browser
• DHCP Client
• DNS Client
• Network Connections
• Network Location Awareness
• Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
• Server
• TCP/IP Netbios helper
• Wireless Zero Configuration (XP wireless configurations)
• WLAN AutoConfig (Vista wireless configurations)
• Workstation

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic (or perhaps manual).

If a service is not running, open it's properties and check the dependencies. Check each of the dependencies and see which one is preventing the service from running. Checking the event log is also a good idea here, there may be clues to what is failing.

Hi,

This is consistent, I can always get it to work that way, though sometimes it takes more than 1 try.

Can you help me fix this? Thank you.

A:My Asus laptop's WiFi doesn't work

Most tech enthusiasts would never run the corrupt factory preinstall with all of the bloatware that throttles Win7 native performance, but instead get the superior Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

Follow the steps about putting your wireless driver in your backup so if it isn't provided by installer you can install it to connect to your netowrk and get online quickly.

Then if you stick with the tools and methods given in the tutorial only, you'll get and keep a perfect install for as long as you do.

The wifi button on my laptop (HP 6730s) used to turn on/off both wifi and bluetooth together. Now suddenly first press turns on only wifi and not bluetooth, and the second the other way round. The wifi button light is still on. Some suggestions what could be the problem? I have tried to reinstall drivers, and play with switching on/off drivers a pressing button. Seems like somehow reversed state of bluetooth or wifi..  ThanksMArtin

Hey guys,

I've got a Dell work laptop. It has McAfee Safeboot and other work related security things. I don't have many "privileges" on the machine. It connects to my work wifi network just fine (automatically) but I can't get it to connect to any wifi networks outside of work. If go to network settings and look at the wireless adapter and view available wifi networks, nothing comes up. It looks like the laptop has an alternative program that controls network adapter (Dell network adapter program) but it won't open when I double click it.

Any thoughts on where to start? What more info would you like?

-eamon

A:Connect work laptop to home wifi

Have a talk with your work IT department and see if they can check it out for you. Then I would make sure that all the drivers are updated, not through MS but through each vendors website, especially the network adapter.

my hp laptop has a d/ drive for backup but when I try to back up files I get a backup failed notification

A:hp laptop d/ backup wont work

Hi patrick477,Welcome to the BC forums.Your d/ drive is probably set up for use as a recovery drive, as opposed to a place for backups.Look at START -> COMPUTER and a screen showing your various drives should pop up. Does it show Recover (D:)?Take a look at the HP Customer Care site here and see if it addresses your problem.
