I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I planned to seek help from TSG about finding an easier way of getting into headers in the MSWord 2007. Word had changed rather drastically from the previous version and I found the new version unnecessarily complicated when it came to dealing with headers.

But before posting, I decided to look at the situation very carefully once more so I could describe the issue accurately. Lo, and behold, I discovered the existence of something called the "Quick Access Toolbar." Now maybe you knew all about that, if so, this post is not for you.

Right-click on an empty place on the top menu bar to the right of the menu items (Home, Insert, Page Layout, etc). When you do that, you will see a menu window appear that provides these options: "Customize Quick Access Toolbar," "Show Quick Access Toolbar Above (or below) the Ribbon," and "Minimize the Ribbon" (The Ribbon being the entire collection of menu icons and subdivisions).

In the Customization Window that appears, you can select items from the extensive list of items in the left column and move them to the "to be included" (my term) column on the right by means of a directional arrow betweem the columns in the middle. You can also remove things you don't want by selecting them in the right column and using the directional arrow between the columns to move them back into the "items from which to select" column on the left.

I'm working with a lengthy Word document and have struck a problem that I can't seem to fix. It is necessary that the header be (1) same font as body text, (2) aligned at upper right, and follow the format: author/title/page number.

Everything works fine until the page number reaches 100, then the first digit piles up on the / and I can't find a way to move the number over a space.

I hope somebody out there has dealt successfully with this problem and can help me out!

I am using Word 2003 and I have created a template containing a header/footer combination with my company letterhead information. This was working fine but the problem I now have is that when I open a new document by loading the template the header and footer are not shown. I must switch into them (using View/Header and Footer)
and they then appear. After that they stay visible. Apparently I have accidentally changed something.

My question is whether anyone knows how to have the header and footer visible by default when I open a new document using the template.

Thanks,

Bill,

How are you getting out of the program? (exiting the screen.) This is what I found from Word Perfect 12's Help Menu:

In working with Headers or Footers note that they do not display in Draft Mode. The document must be open in Page or Two Page View.

To View a header or footer: Click view and than click one of the following: (Uncheck Draft Mode if checked)

Click Insert/Header and Footer

Enable one of the following options:

Click Edit

Make any changes to the text

Click File, Close

If the document is displayed in Page View or Two Pages View you can also edit the header or footer by clicking anywhere inside the header or footer.

You should be able to change the view in the same area as the footers/headers. Near the top of the pull down menu there are areas that indicate normal - web - print etc. Also at the bottom of your page are buttons showing the different view modes for your document. Hit the normal view and you should be able to work on your headers/footers.

I use Word 2002 and need a document with a header on page one, but not on page 2. As advised I use View>Header and Footer>, and then click Layout on the toolbar. As instructed I click Different first page. I've made a template with this header but documents created with this template still have the header on the second page.
I've also tried recreating the document template from scratch and replacing the original, but the same problem reappears.
I attached a zipped copy of this template.
I would warmly appreciate any suggestions.

A:Solved: Discontinue headers in Word

You may be neglecting one extra step. If you choose to have a different header on the first page only, you will need to set up the first page and then the other pages. You may need to go to page two, select Header and Footer and blank out the information for the remaining pages to create a blank header. Then your check in "Different First Page" will use the page one data on the first page only.

There's a good (but old) tutorial here.

I have a short document (14 pages) written in Word 2000. Starting about the middle of the document, and only for a couple of pages before it reverts back to normal, the header somehow goes from being 1/2-inch high to something like 5 inches high. This of course means the first line of text is in the middle of the page.

If I select the offending header and try to adjust its margin with the vertical ruler, the change won't stick - when I release the mouse button the header immediately reverts to its large size.

What would cause this? And how can I fix it??

A:Solved: Surpressing Headers in Word 2003?

Take a look in the Word 2003 Help files under "Insert headers and footers" It has a section with instructions on creating a different first page header or footer.

If your document is divided into sections, click in a section or select multiple sections you want to change. Click anywhere if your document is not divided into sections.

On the View menu, click Header and Footer.

On the Header and Footer toolbar, click Page Setup .

Click the Layout tab.

Select the Different first page check box, and then click OK.

If necessary, click Show Previous or Show Next on the Header and Footer toolbar to move into the First Page Header area or First Page Footer area.

Create the header or footer for the first page of the document or section.
If you don't want a header or footer on the first page, leave the header and footer areas blank.

To move to the header or footer for the rest of the document or section, click Show Next on the Header and Footer toolbar. Then create the header or footer you want.

At work, when we send out proposal documents (Word 2002 Office XP) we send them out in two different ways- as paper printouts and as pdfs. My boss is very particular about the company branding so when we send out paper versions they must be printed on letter-headed paper. When we send out pdfs we set up headers and footers that look like the letter-headed paper. Unfortunately this means that whenever we create a proposal we end up editing two documents, one with headers and footers, one without. This is time consuming and has led to differences between the versions in the past.

- Ideally, we would just edit the version with the header and footer, and then be able to hide them when printing onto paper- I can't find a button in Word to do this!
- I've tried to persuade the boss to just print the pdfs onto normal paper for the paper versions, bur apparently this isn't good enough
- I've tried inserting an image of the letter-headed paper as a watermark (which could easily be removed for printing to paper) but even I can see the result isn't good enough quality- it also isn't very flexible.

Has anyone got any bright ideas that could help? I've read on these forums about Master Documents but I don't really understand what they are- could they be the answer?

Thanks for your help

I have had trouble formatting Word 2003 documents so that the header is suppressed on the first page but the footer prints. It is probably some little thing that I am missing. I am a dyed-in-the-wool WordPerfect fan and use Word only as a last resort, so am not familiar with some of the fine points of the latter. To briefly summarize: I have gone to the View / Headers and Footers menu and entered the desired text for the header and the footer. Then I have gone to the Page Layout button and run into trouble there. If I click on First Page different, I suppress printing of both the header and the footer. I have tried choosing "From this point forward" and then entering header text on the second page rather than the first, but either both header and footer are blank on the first page, or if I unclick the box for First Page Different, then the header displays as well as the footer. I will appreciate any help.

A:Solved: Formatting Headers/Footers in Word 2003

Sounds like what you need is a section break. At the end of the first page, insert a section break - make sure you make it a page section break. This will allow you to have different headers for each section. On page 2 (which is now the first page of section 2), enter your header. On the header and footer toolbar, there is a "link to previous" button. It's selected by default, so you'll have to unselect it. The header might have automatically been put onto the first page; if so, go to page one and delete the header. As long as the "link to previous" button is not enabled, this should delete the header on only the first page, leaving you with the footer on all pages. Let us know if you need clarification on any of the steps since you're not used to using Word. Good luck!

I am using Word 2010. I created two double sided templates. the first with no colors in the H/Fs. The 2nd has colors in H/Fs.

I took the first no color template and created the one with color. Now when I go to insert a section break at the end of the colorful template (4th section) the old no color footer pops in. It happens when inserting a page break or odd section break. When I insert an even section break I get the current odd footer (but the next page needs to be even).

I tried deleting the old header and footer and replacing them with the correct ones. I also right clicked and selected "remove header/footer" but it didn't make any difference.

Is there a way to clean out these old headers and footers? (I checked they are not in my building blocks for inserting h/fs either). This template will be distributed to multiple authors and it would be better to have nothing appear than some old header/footer design.

Hello!

After banging my head against the wall and fighting with Visual Basic to create a template full of fancy bells and whistles for my client, I've come up against a probably simple, but amazingly annoying issue.

When I apply my template to a document, the headers and footers don't appear. I don't understand. (Yes, I click View --> Headers, Footers.) They're not there.

I go back to the template. They exist. I create a new document. They exist. I apply the template to a document with no headers/footers (or in some cases existing headers/footers) and nothing.

If it were just for me, I'd come up with a workaround. But I need to hand this template off to a client who needs to work with it. Cutting and pasting, etc, isn't going to do it.

Surely there is a way to make the headers and footers appear when applying to an EXISTING document.

Thank you so much, in advance, for any help you might provide.

Cheers,
Michelle

Hi all,

I have a report in Microsoft Access that I have to regularly email out to people. I use a SendObject macro to create the email content and automatically attach the report as a .xls document. When I email it, however, the automatically attached Excel document has the old column headers (the content is fine). On computer1, I have successfully created a customized form with user-define fields in Outlook 2007 and a merge document in Word 2007 that works (starting the merge from Outlook 2007). I want to copy the custom form with the user-define fields and the merge document to a second computer (computer2).

I saved the custom form with fields from computer1 to a *.fdm file using the Tools, Options, Other, Advanced Options, Custom Forms, Manage forms. On computer2 I used the same process to install the custom form file (*.fdm) into Outlook 2007 and created a new contact folder that uses the form and displays/adds new contact records correctly. I also copied the Word merge document to computer2. Computer1 and computer2 both have Office 2007.

All the problems occur on computer2. First, when I attempted to merge (starting in Outlook 2007), Word gave messages that all my user-defined fields did NOT exist in the database although I could see them in the Contact records. I attempted to create a new document and the user-define fields do NOT show up in the Word merge field list either.

On computer2, I created from scratch a new contacts folder with a new custom form and user-define fields which works when merging. Therefore, the problem seems to be that Word can not see the fields I created from the *.fdm file I installed.

Can anyone please help me with this? Thank you in advance.

Hello,

I have been running a new PC, ASUS Z97-WS, for about four months. Over 80% of my application crashes are related to Microsoft products. I am running WIN7 Ultimate x64, using Office 2007. Word crashes daily reporting ?? software exception (0xe00000002) ?? I have run hardware tests, including Word diagnostics without finding errors. I also run Viso Professional 2007, which attempts to reinstall itself every time I start the program. I can cancel the install or lets it proceed. Once started Viso works correctly. Word is my biggest headache as it tends to fail just when you are saving a file for the first time. If it recovers it normally looses the data entered, it sometimes shows repairs related to image objects but is vague on details.

I have all the latest Microsoft updates, BIOS updates, print drivers, and have disabled all Word add-ons and have replaced normal.doc.

What would you recommend I try to resolve these concerns? Thanks.
PS The programs worked better when I installed them on a previous PC about 6 years ago.

My employer just upgraded to Microsoft Office 2007. According to the help files, I should be able to paste Excel charts into Word that update automatically when changes are made to either version.

I am clicking "Link to Excel data" and "Keep source formatting" when using the little popup clipboard to paste a chart into Word. But after closing both files, opening Excel and updating data on the chart, saving and closing Excel and re-opening Word, the chart is not updating with the new information. I can't get it to update by clicking on "refresh data" either.

Does anyone know how this is supposed to work? I was looking forward to being able to update just the Excel file and having it update in all the Word documents where it is pasted.

Our OS is Windows XP Professional, Version 2002, Service Pack 2. My work computer has a Pentium 4, 3 GHz processor and 2 GB of RAM.

I recently installed Office 2007 on a new Vista 64 bit system. I was unable to install my previous version of WordPerfect Office 12. When using WP on my previous Windows XP system, I was able to go into the word processor, click open, go to the wp folder (where I kept all my documents) and do a search based on a particular word I was looking for. For example, I could type in the word "hebrew" in the files box and each document file that contained that word (not only in the file name but in the contents of the file) was listed. I could then preview the contents of each document file and open the one I wanted.

Does this feature work in Word 2007 under Vista 64? I have only been able to find a file name with the word I type, even though I know many other document files contain the word I type in the files box. This has been very frustrating because it means I have to preview every file to find the one I want rather than just the files with the typed word in its contents.

Thank you for your time in this matter.

Hi folks,

I have this problem that is hard to search for on Google. We have a lot of word 2000 documents connected to a simpel text data file (data.doc) that is used with mail merge.

Here is our process:
1.) data.doc is opened, filled with all variablenames we can use in our documents (name, country, etc.)
2.) data.doc is opened, filled with the actual data (from a database) belonging to the variables name (Kees, Japan, etc.)
3.) Our vb.net 2008 application does step 1 and 2, then starts a template word 2000 document which has that data.doc file attached for mail merge. The template is now filled in with the correct data.
4.) vb.net 2008 application tells MS Word to print the document.
5.) Works fine and we have ourselves a nice document filled in with data we specified in the vb.net 2008 application.

Now comes the problem, some new computers will have office 2007 instead of office 2000 installed, during testing we have encountered that it does not error but the office 2007 installed computer does not fill in the data and just shows mergefield names <<name>> <<country>>. Also when printed out. So it seems like the datafile is not connected when opening the template in word 2007.

If we let our vb.net 2008 application show us the document visually first, we can re-attach the data file again and we can print the data, however there are 3 thing wrong with this approach:

1.) More user input which is not needed.
2.) MS Word is opening and showing, somet... Read more

Have HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC
Intel(R)Core(TM)2 Duo CPU
P7450 @ 2.13 GHz
6.0 GB RAM
64-bit OS
No Pen or Touch Input is avail for this display
I have Windows 7 Ultimate, Service Pack 1; MS Office 2007

The message I get is:
"You are attempting to open a file that was created in an earlier version of MS Office. This file is blocked from opening in this version by your registry policy settings."

I have tried to run "Fix It," and it failed.
The old Word file from 1994 is before Windows 95; probably Win 3.1 or Win 3.11.

I am hoping someone out there can help me read my really old files! Thank you!

I also have some old database files I need to run (not Access); but are Borland's Visual dBase Pro 5.5 or slightly older (1992 .dbf files). I actually have the CD-ROM for the Borland program. Do I dare install it? (The CD cover says it "supports Windows 95 & Windows 3.1, and the Crystal Info Report Builder program that goes with it). Or, is there a way to convert these to Access, and the old Word files to 2007 (without having to buy the 2010 ver of Word)?

Windows Vista Home Premium SP1, Office 2007

I know how to save documents created in Word 2007 so it can be used with Word 2003 done manually.

Can someone inform me whether I can set my "save as" so documents created in Word 2007 will be always saved as default to be compatible with Word 2003?

A:Saving Documents Created in Word 2007 to be Compatible with Word 2003

You can us this compatibility update to read Office 2007 docs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) In earlier versions of Office - Download details: Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats. Meaning you can save your Word docs in their original format and Word 2003 will read them.

You might want to check this link out as well - http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/wo...444731033.aspx

As far as setting a "default" save, to be honest, I'm not sure if this can be done or not.

Hope this helps.

In this thread: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic458779.html/page__st__15__gopid__2770461#entry2770461
I asked for help with problems that were occurring after Avast found a malware infection on my computer.

Right now what is happening:

When I open a Word file, it freezes & then crashes (details below) often w/in 10-20 minutes of opening the file, but occasionally it has been longer (it went 3 hours once). Sometimes it happens when I am doing resource intensive things with an image dense document, other times it has happened when I have left the computer and the document is just sitting here open.

This often coincides with an extreme slowdown of everything running on the computer (though each has occurred separately).

I went through the suggestions for dealing with slow computers frex:

I have:

- cleaned computer
- went through Firefox troubleshooting checklist
- cleaned hard drive (used CCleaner)
- ran SFC
- ran Chkdsk
- checked for problem entries in Device Manager
- checked DMA status (already enabled)
- defraged system
- defraged page files
- checked for unnecessary running services
- verified Windows indexing system was disabled
- Disabled visual effects
- disabled Ctfmon.exe
- disabled mdm.exe
- ran TFC
- tried doing a clean boot
- a number of things I believe were directly related to the malware checking/repairing (OTL, ESET, aswMBR, DDS,
- uninstalled & reinstalled Word multiple times (including 2 fresh downloads - legal, I hasten to add&#... Read more

Hi,
Don't mind the curious ones, but I'm one of them. So anyway, almost one year ago now, the Word macro virus W97M/Marker.C was running rampant around Gordon College, with many teachers and students alike being infected. I was even infected with it thanks to one of my professors posting an assignment description document that had it. I was running AVG 9.0 at the time, and it was flagged many a time over. I think there were like six or so instances. My memory may be flaky, as my laptop has undergone many reformats since then, but what I do remember is trying to ignore AVG's warning, due to the fact that AVG has given me many false positives when I used it. The message Word gave me was that the document couldn't be opened because it wasn't available. But the strange part of that is that AVG had not removed anything from the file. I can think of two reasons why the file wouldn't run with the virus in it. Tell me which, if either, is correct. One is that Microsoft has since changed the macro format from 2003 and earlier versions of Word simply due to the many viruses that once existed for it, or two, that message was a very convoluted way of telling me that Windows 7 no longer supports Virtual device Drivers (*.vxd) as I was able to open the file after it had been cleaned up by Eset NOD32. Any knowledge you folks have would be very interesting, as I have always been curious about the very odd weekend of February 12, 2010. Now don't get me ... Read more

A:random curiosity about MS Word macro viruses and why (thank the Lord), they don't work in Word 2007/2010

I don't know the particulars of the macro virus you mention, but with Microsoft Office 2003, a significant change was implemented that effectively stopped the propagation of macro viruses.

Prior to Office 2003, macros were enabled by default, and opening a document with macros and auto-execute meant the macros were automatically executed (and thus the virus could infect and propagate).

With Office 2003, macro security was introduced. With a Microsoft Office 2003 default install, macros need to be signed with a certificate issued by a trusted root CA. Macros that are not signed will not be executed. Users have to explicitly lower the macro security level for unsigned macros to execute. Almost all macro viruses were unsigned.

I don't think so. Try installing OpenOffice.org 3.0 and you'll be able to open those files.
