X230 Tablet fingerprint reader stopped working

Q: X230 Tablet fingerprint reader stopped working

Hi,I am suspecting a hardware failure, but wanted to check the forums first anyway.I have an X230 Tablet running Windows 8.1 Update. Fingerprint software 6.0. Was working fine (i.e. swipe to power on and log on to Windows and the Lenovo Password Mgr) until this morning. No more green light on the sensor, no function. Windows says that the fingerprint sensor is not available. It was still showing up in Device Manager, I uninstalled it as part of some troubleshooting and it's not being detected anymore now.Any ideas other than hardware? Thanks,SA.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

It sounds like hardware failure but try one more thing:

Reboot into BIOS setup (by pressing F1 at the ThinkPad logo screen).
Go to the security -> fingerprint menu.
There's an option about clearing the fingerprint sensor storage (or something like that).
What happens?

Hope someone can help me with this, Windows update offer me newer driver for my fingerprint reader AuthenTec AES2501A and after that update reader simply stopped working. If I try to enroll fingerprints it sais Windows did not find any biometric devices, also it says same at logon screen and I always need type password which is annoying. There are no 7 drivers for my laptop model, only Vista. I upgraded from Vista to 7, driver was installed under Vista and it did always work with 7 with no problem, stupid me I went and updated it I removed driver and now when I do new hardware scan Windows can not find driver for my device or if I tell it look online, it will install same driver that does not work. Vista driver comes with ThinkVantage security solutions and the installer simply will not run under 7 (operating system not supported error). What to do? Is there any way to make installer not check my system? Or how I get driver out from exe file? I don't want install Vista and then 7 again and all the programs, I will spend all day on it

You can use the vista driver if you install it in compatibility mode. to do this right click the installer>properties>compatibility mode>check vista. then install

My fingerprint reader has stopped working again. It started working after the last Windows 10 update, but after some time it just stopped working. I got a message saying to "swipe my finger slowly". Other times it said to "swipe finger more to the left" But no matter how many times I tried the reader just did not recognized my fingerprint. Now the reader's light is not even visible when I swipe my finger. I have not updated Windows again since I'm waiting for the latest update of Windows Creator to be available for my laptop.  All the other available updates for my laptop were supposedly installed on 4-17-17 Any help? Thank you.

The only thing i can think of is uninstall then reinstall the driver for it and see if it works again. i have two ibm thinkpad laptops with that feature and i dont even use them because to me personally they are a nuisance and after one went haywire and locked me out of the computer i said i dont need this headache anymore.i had to take the hard drive out remove the driver for that and reinstall the hard drive. no more problems after that.

The fingerprint reader on my T470 has been a little glitchy since I bought it - occasionally doesn't work, but usually resolves if I restart it. Just performed some sort of update, though, and since then the fingerprint reader hasn't worked at all.  I had to go back and figure out what my password was, which took a while since I've never used it before.Any ideas? I am not a computer person, so if I can't fix this really easily I'm going to have to get it repaired (it's still under warranty).

The fingerprint reader on my W541 laptop stopped working.  It's been working for more than a year, and worked last week.  Now it's not working - not illuminated & doesn't read my fingerprint.  Going into 'Settings' (Windows 10), 'Accounts', & 'Sign-In Options', it says "Windows Hello is not available on this device".I believe 'Windows Hello' is the software that runs the fingerpront reader.Any ideas of what to look for to get this working again? I have not loaded any new software since last week (when the fingerprint reader was working). The last system update installed was:"Intel Corporation - Bluetooth - 11/14/2016 12:00:00 AM - 19.30.1646.853" - installed on 2/1/17 (4 days ago). The fingerprint reader worked OK after that update.

This problem has been reported several times before, but no answer whatsoever  The fingerprint reader stopped working, apparently after a windows update upgrade I have tried EVERYTHING there is, from uninstalling and deleting the driver files then reinstalling, downgrading the drivers, rebooting, upgrading, updating chipset, video card and display drivers, updated BIOS, etc. etc. etc. and the best thing that can happen is for it to work a couple of times and stop working again... it is a less-than-a-month-old computer and it seems  MANY users are having this problem....I already ran Lenovo Diagnostics tool, Lenovo system update tool, Microsoft's windows update and have latest definitioins for everything, Microsoft trouble shooter recognizes the problem but can't fix it. the only thing I haven't tried is downgrading my windows 10 to a previous version... computer: Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5 Model 81C9Processor Intel Core 17-8550U @ 1.80GHzOperating system: Windows 10 Home 64-bit  Ver. 1803 Synaptics WBDI driver version: 5.5.2613.1050 Intel(R) UHD Graphics 620 ver. 23.20.16.4973 BIOS version 4QCN43WW(V2.07) Thanks for any help I can get to solve this annoying situation

I've now tried installing the Windows 10 Pro Creator's Update twice, and both times my fingerprint reader stopped working for Windows Hello. I just get "Your credentials could not be verified". I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver (and I'm on the latest), removing and re-registering my fingerprint, and I've also tried the trick I saw suggested elsewhere of switching to a local account, then back to a Microsoft account. That works temporarily but as soon as I switch back to my MS account, it breaks again. I've rooted around the BIOS but everything seems fine. I have the same fingerprint set on startup and that still works fine; Windows just doesn't recognize it, either when it's passed on from the BIOS or when I try to do it again manually. Has anyone had this problem and managed to fix it *without* reverting permanently to a local account? I don't see why that should be necessary and it definitely isn't supposed to be. I have reverted back to the Anniversary Update both times because of this issue.

Hi
Have seen several posts but no solutions. After a windows 10 update a couple of months ago, the fingerprint scanner stopped working. It recognises me but then says "your credentials could not be confirmed".
Microsoft have sent endless messages blaming the driver, the scanner etc etc. Finally they say it is an issue with the update, but they have not solution at this time. Good old Microsoft and their helpful updates, which you cannot avoid.
Anyone have the same problem and how did you fix it??
Thanks

Hello. . .
I use the fingerprint reader to login to my Latitude E5550 every time.  However, I was unable to do so after the latest Windows 10 update (version 1607).

It did still show in the Windows Device Manager (i.e., no "Unknown Device" listed)
I went into the DDP Console to try to register a new fingerprint (for troubleshooting), but it wasn't reading the swipes
I attempted to update to the latest firmware/drivers, but that only caused unknown devices to show up in the Device Manager (ControlVault Firmware v3.3.15.0 and ControlVault Drivers v3.3.14.68)
Switched back to the older driver (v3.0.48.26) and all devices were once again recognized

Any suggestions for how to get around this?  It's not the end of the world, but I *really* like using the fingerprint reader (I paid extra for) to login.  If I can provide additional helpful information, please let me know.
Thanks!

A:X1 Yoga fingerprint reader (Synaptics WBDI) stopped working after repair / motherboard replacement

Okey!  Few rounds around the Internet got me absolutely nowhere. Lenovo said that it was a known problem and the only way to fix it is to do a factory reset.... BULLS** is my response to that. Anything software related can be fixed without nuking your system. So i refused to give up and with a bit of trial and error i found a way. You have to tie your Microsoft account to a pin AGAIN! Even if you already had one. I guess the account is tied to your hardware somehow. Here are simple steps to fix it:  1. Make shure to Activate and Resett fingerprint reader in the BIOS Reboot and enter the BIOS (f1 during boot) Go to Security > fingerprint Make sure Predesktop Authentication is [Enabled]And to to "Reset Fingerprint Data" and press [Enter] to reset Save and exit   2. Make shure drivers are up to date and working Run Lenovo Vantage (windows store) to make sure your running the latest drivers for everything including the fingerprint reader. You can also download the drivers directly form Lenovos product support page, but Vantage actually works (so Kudos to Lenovo for that one). After that check you device manager if the driver is running currently. Like this: (Start menu > type "device manager")Like this... Hi guys, this is my first post here.I just bought an HP ENVY a week ago, and everything was working fine till I updated the fingerprint reader and now it isn't working anymore. I can't set up the login by Windows Hello, it always says that I'm not scanning properly and flashes with a red light, but the thing that worries me the most is that the light on the sensor turns on and off even when it's not supposed to. For example: I open a new tab on Chrome and it goes on and off for like two minutes. Yesterday it went on and off all the time. This obviously this drains out my battery, so I wonder what could I do to solve this. The problems started when I updated it. Thank you for your attention.

Hello, My notebook is an HP DV7T-6000 CTO Entertainment Notebook that I have upgraded to Windows 10 64 Bit.  The original operating system was Windows 7 Home and the fingerprint reader worked at that time.  After I upgraded to Win. 10 it had stopped working.  I tried to look for a solution but didn't have any luck.  I made an image of my notebook, about 6 months ago and saved it for a later time.  Some time after making the image, I found a way to make my fingerprint reader work again, but didn't save the instructions or the downloads for it.  I know, I'm beating my head against the wall.  Because of suspecious notebook behavior, I reloaded the image I saved and now I can't seem to find a way to make my fingerprint reader work again.  I do remember that it was an updated driver for my laptop that made the fingerprint scanner work again, but I don't remember what the updated version was.  If any of you could help, I will be truly greatfull.  Maybe, at some point, I can stop banging my head against the wall.   Thank you!

These two pieces of hardware have been working intermittently for the past several months but now have failed completely. Any leads on what could be causing this, or quick hardware possibilities to check? Thanks!

There is a ribbon cable connecting them to the motherboard but usually to reach it you have to first remove the keyboard and maybe the palmrest to see where it plugs in.

Lately when I turn on my computer, sometimes it's working and sometimes it has a red "x" over the icon in my startup menu in bottom righthand corner. I had to reboot 3x this morning before I could get it to work. It worked for a while and now nothing. There is no red x showing, but it's not scanning at all.

It works 100% of the time when booting from an off position, however. Once logged in, it also works 100% of the time. The issue only arises when logging into windows. Things I have tried-uninstalling/installing device in device manager and finger print manager pro software-setting fingerprints through both fingerprint manager pro software (lenovo) OR through the built in windows fingerprint control panel options-disabling "allow windows to turn off this device to save power" in device manager. I should note as well that I have another T540P that I ordered as a replacement. Both models experience the same issue. Is this a platform wide issue affecting all T540P models? This is frusterating.

Hi dinomon, Welcome to SF,

Have you install proper drivers for your Finger Print Reader device. If not go to their website. Download the Lastest drives for Windows 7 then install it. See whether it works or not.

P.S. Please fill the System spec so we know what are we dealing with.

Hope this helps,

So here's the solution(s) as found by Pokey and me: Option 1:  Computer, Properties, Device Manager, Biometric Devices, Validity Sensors, Properties, and the Power Management tab, Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." Option 2:  Try disabling and enabling the "Credential Manager" service by going into Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services, Credentials Manager.  Even though the Credentials Manager status is ?Started,? stop the Credentials Manager service and restart it. Find more information here:  https://support.authentec.com/Forum/tabid/318/forumid/49/threadid/600/scope/posts/Default.aspx Option 3:  Do both.

I have installed win7 64 bit ("fresh install" on my M750-129) and i have also downloaded and installed all the newest drivers from toshiba website.
the device manager shows no problem / drivers needed, and trhings like HDD protection work well.

However, i have four groups of problems i would love and appreciate to find answer:

1) when i change the screen position to tablet, it does not change the orientation nor the resolution.
There is no utility to set the desired orientations of screen as it was in vista (horribly unstable and slow OS, though).
This, naturally, is diminishing the usefullness of the tablet finction

2) the buttons do not work properly; the screen rotation button starts excel (!!) , the centre of mobility button starts word (!!), and the toshiba assistance button does not work at all

3) fingerprints: the fingerprint utility lets me to screen my fingerprint, asks if it should save it, and than says "saving impossible; another duplicate pattern exists" which i completely do not understand what it means...

4) some applications are not available at all after fresh install: face recognition, DVD player, bussines card screener - but i can love without those; 1-3 worries me much much more and i would appreciate any functional help. thanx on advance for any try!

A:Portege M750 tablet, buttons and fingerprint functions not working in win7

Hi

I think you would need an extension package in order to use the tablet functions on the Portege series.
I didn?t find the Tablet PC Extension Package for Win 7 but there is an package for Win Vista.

Usually many tools and drivers which were released for Vista would work with Win 7.
So in my opinion you should try to install additionally this Tablet PC Extension Package.
I think this should solve the issue with the buttons too!

Regarding the fingerprint;
I think the message means that an fingerprint was already registered and therefore an second save is not possible.
Check if you can delete other fingerprints?

But on windows log on it is showing detecting reader, and then reader is not detected. Same is happening in the software (Digital persona). I tried different softwares from different websites.  Please tell if you know something NEW. I said something new because I saw many people on many websites looking for that problem. But the problem is there. When I run the setup of Validity sensor driver, it install fine. Then I run the latest Digital persona software it says on its installation ("The system cannot verify that the fingerprint readers is installed"). And under it here is a option to SKIP that part. When I do it, it completes the installation and restarts the computer. After that same problem "Reader not detected" on windows log on.

I periodically have to reinstall the Fingerprint drivers to get the reader to be recognized & WORK. This time when trying to get the diagnostics, I get : ? Yes, but it's not in my Add/Remove options :  ? Then I get this:?  It's all a big black box with no,user visible, physical dialog.  I never know when an update/install is finished or locked. Waste more time waiting, not knowing if the task completed.  Yes, I can find out using rigmarole procedures that I SHOULD NOT have to do on a WORKSTATION.  I waste more time cajoling this system, then doing actual work. Question:  Anyone else have intermittent issues with the Figerprint Reader on a W540 using the latest Win 10??

Still trying to solve the Fingerpring Reader failure.  This time, even after reinstalling the reader, I see nothing.  No reader, or activity. Trying the Solution Center, all I see - stalled - just sits and stares at me: ? No activity notes, the logo just stays there, no [X] to close.  I have to do the Win command Alt-F4, and it closes but I have no idea if something is being written when closing.  Rebooted, checked the disk, tried again, same thing, just a pretty logo and a fingerprint reader that no longer works. Event Viewer tells me [Service Control Manager] event id 7000 error.  The error link to MS, just takes me to an infantile MS page telling me how great the Surface Pro 4 is.... no help screen as in the past. Note that I wasted more time testing  for Malware or Virus. System is clean, everything else works fine.

In the last few weeks, I have noticed the fingerprint reader on my 4th Gen X1 Carbon works infrequently. I find that upon boot, it only works about 25% of the time. The remaining times, I am forced to enter my password and the fingerprint driver shows an error in Windows Device Manager. I am running the lastest version of Windows 10, have completed all recent BIOS updates, and have attempted to reinstall all relevant drivers several times.  Wondering if anyone has had a similar issue or if support can provide a solution.

Hi all, I recently purchased a ThinkPad E550 (20DF0040US) and the Fingerprint reader (Synaptics) was working when I first set up the machine but now, after a week's worth of ownership, it is no longer recognized. I searched the forums here and found that an older driver worked to solve the problem for others but it did not solve the issue for me. I tried to reinstall the most up to date driver and that didn't solve the issue either. I am running Windows 7 Pro which came installed on the machine. Some users indicated that Windows updates are the culprit but I cannot confirm this. All my Windows updates are current and there are no updates pending from Lenovo. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

My T440s' (20AQ) fingerprint reader constantly failed to be recognized by Windows 10. The system has been updated to the latest status with Windows Update and Lenovo System Update.  The LED of fingerprint reader does not blink at logon screen. Device manager cannot recognize its VID or Hardware ID. Resetting BIOS worked at beginning, but no longer work today. Separately resetting fingerprint reader in BIOS prompt "No Fingerprint reader attached" message. Does anyone have similar issue? I know I'm not alone.
