Vista security feature?

Q: Vista security feature?

I had to reinstall windows Vista Business on 2 computers (different specs) this weekend, the install disk already contained SP2 and i just installed dotnet 4.5.1 after the clean install followed by all the patches from winupdate. Everything great, no error, no issues, no nada.

Problem is i cant run any .exe or merge any .reg files from external disks or usb jump drives, is it a security feature or a bug caused by windows updates, since I dont remember this happening when I used Vista like 6 years ago, and I really used Vista a lot.

Thanks a lot guys!

Preferred Solution: Vista security feature?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Vista security feature?

Do you have the same problem when you right click the .exe and select run as administrator?

As we known, MS Internet Explorer has a special feature called “AutoComplete”, it can remember certain details entered on web forms, such as username and password. Let’s talk about how to do this feature first.
Referring from: http://www.mediacollege.com
Title: How to Remember Names & Passwords in IE (AutoComplete)

Go to the Tools menu on IE and select Internet Options.

A window will open like the one below. Click the Content tab, then click the AutoComplete button.
In the AutoComplete Settings window, check (or uncheck) the options you would like to use.

Although this feature will help you saving a lot of time on surfing the Internet, here we talk about the security. Do you think it is security? At this time, I’ll say no, because some unauthorized users can also login any forms with these information you saved on your computer. So my opinion is that you should uncheck the AutoComplete feature or use some third-party tools, such as JJSoft IntelliLogin, IE Login, and Smart Login etc.

You can find these tools on:

Executive Summary

Microsoft is aware of a security feature bypass vulnerability in Secure Channel (Schannel) that affects all supported releases of Microsoft Windows. Our investigation has verified that the vulnerability could allow an attacker to force the downgrading of the cipher suites used in an SSL/TLS connection on a Windows client system. The vulnerability facilitates exploitation of the publicly disclosed FREAK technique, which is an industry-wide issue that is not specific to Windows operating systems. When this security advisory was originally released, Microsoft had not received any information to indicate that this issue had been publicly used to attack customers.
We are actively working with partners in our Microsoft Active Protections Program (MAPP) to provide information that they can use to provide broader protections to customers.
Upon completion of this investigation, Microsoft will take the appropriate action to help protect customers. This may include providing a security update through our monthly release process or providing an out-of-cycle security update, depending on customer needs.

Mitigating Factors
A server needs to support RSA key exchange export ciphers for an attack to be successful.

Please see the Suggested Actions section of this advisory for workarounds to disable the RSA export ciphers. Microsoft recommends that customers use these workarounds to mitigate this vulnerability.

Nifty new feature that comes with Win 10 1903

How to Enable the Windows 10 Tamper Protection Security Feature

With the release of the Windows 10 May 2019 Update, Microsoft introduced a new security feature called Tamper Protection that protects security settings for Windows Defender antivirus from being disabled by malware or third-party programs.

When enabled, Tamper Protection will only allow Windows Defender related settings to be changed when done through the Windows Security settings screen. If a program, such as malware, or even PowerShell tries to change security settings or Microsoft Defender preferences, Tamper Protection will block the settings from being modified.

Due to this, Tamper Protection is an integral part of the Windows 10 security environment and should be enabled by all users for increased security and protection from malicious programs. Click to expand...

Directions follow in the article on how to enable.

edit: I just checked mine and found it was already enabled.

Hello everyone. I just got a new laptop running Vista Home Premium x64, and it's my first experience with both Vista and an x64 OS.

I've changed the security settings in IE7 to a custom level, and now I get the notification bar saying "Your current security settings put your computer at risk. etc." I know this can be disabled via gpedit.mcs but of course Vista Home doesn't include that feature. So, a couple questions.

Nobody here seems to know much about getting GPedit to work in Vista Home, so I won't even touch that. However, I did see mention of the Microsoft speadsheet that lists all the various group policy settings and their corresponding registry entries. I found the "Disable Security Settings Check Feature" entry, but now I'm not sure what to do with it.

HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Security!DisableSecuritySettingsCheck
HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Security!DisableSecuritySettingsCheck

I can navigate to the Microsoft folder in regedit, but that's where the trail ends. Do I need to create a key or something? I don't have much experience with the registry, and I really want this notification bar gone. Help please?

cheers everyone!

A:Disable Security Settings Check Feature && GPEdit

Hello mousetopher. You probably allowed something in the security settings that you should have just set to prompt. Scripts, Activex, something that will tolerate nothing beyond prompt. Allowing anything unsigned more permissions then prompt will set off that warning. Reset them to default and then your security warnings should disappear.

Hope it helped. If not I probably read it wrong.

What security feature disallows applications from loading DLLs from their own directory?

I have two DLLs named ws2_32.dll and wsock32.dll. I also have an application that i want to utilize these two dlls rather then the ones in system32 but it apears that it doesn't. I ran a dependency scanner and found that in fact the application does load these two DLLs rather then the ones in system32 folder.

How i know its not working: the dlls are suppose to make a log file. It succeeded in making the log file on winXP but not Win7.
I found some one else having same problem but with vista but that could be fixed by doing the following:

'set the registry key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\DevOverrideEnable" to 1" '

However, i can't find the DevOverrideEnable field in my win7 registry. so upon the suggestions of some friends i added the field in manually and set the value that didnt work either.

What i have tried:
On Admin account
Run as Admin
Set compatibility to xp
take ownership
turn off all security features that i could get my hands on

all of that and no luck please advise.

Thank you,

Not a big fan of vista's search

What I am trying to do:
I would like to be able to go to one place to do all of my file searching.
I have alot of various files on my computer. Sometimes I want to look for a word inside one of my pdfs and sometimes I want to look for just the file name.

I have many pdf files of medical journal if I want to look for a title on medication induced liver disease, I don't want to have to type in the word liver and it automatically search inside the file. If I do that it will bring up hundreds of file. Granted I may have multiple files with the word liver in the file name it isn't hundreds.

Sometimes I want to search for a specific word such as an author in all of the pdfs.

I have found ways to do both but it seems cumbersome and complicated. I would rather not have to look for multiple ways to do it. If I use the normal search pane it is good for looking inside files but not just for the file name as in my first example. If I go to advanced search it seems to only do the first search type not the second type.

Thanks for your help

I've seen the commercials, and the ads. I've followed the directions on Microsoft's site, as well as several by random users out there (which all say the same thing); by text, pictures, and video. But I am convinced that my computer simply does not have the panorama feature. I know this can't really be (or at least, shouldn't be), so I'm confused and frustrated.

The problem comes when I go to the "make" menu. The only "make" I can do is movie, and it's not a menu, just a button. Doesn't matter how many, or which pictures I have selected.

What's going on? Anyone out there have any ideas? I'd really like to play with this feature, but it's proving to not exist.

This is an HP Compaq Presario CQ50-130US which came pre-installed with Vista Home Premium.

ETA: I was debating whether this should go here or under the photo editing software area. I ended up here, but please move it if you feel it is more appropriate elsewhere.

Is there anything I can do to copy image from a larger drive to a smaller drive, even though the data on the smaller drive is less than the data on the new drive?

Vista feature exposes beta machines. Windows Vista beta testers have stumbled upon a networking feature in the operating system that could pose a security risk to them--but they say they're not worried. After installing the first beta release of the upcoming Windows client, some testers noticed suspicious network traffic to their machines. Concerned about a possible attack, these people last week contacted the SANS Internet Storm Center."There was very curious traffic that did not match anything that they had seen before," said George Bakos, a security expert at the Institute for Security Technology Studies at Dartmouth College who is associated with SANS. "The concern was that this may be some new type of attack, or somebody scanning for a vulnerability we were unaware of." After investigating the traffic for SANS, Bakos found the culprit: a peer-to-peer networking feature that is turned on by default in Vista Beta 1, released last month. The feature uses a new version of Microsoft's peer name resolution protocol (PNRP) and connects to other beta machines as soon as an Internet connection is available, he said.Published: August 18, 2005, 2:38 PM PDTBy Joris EversStaff Writer, CNET News.comFull story at CNET News

This runs "cmd" in Administrator Mode. Then type - "run" Type - BCDEdit /set PAE forceenableOf course, if your system didn't meet the requirements shown in that KnowledgeBase article, it won't work.Let us know if this helped, OK?Oh, it appears that "BCDEdit /deletevalue PAE" should remove the command, again, at the Admin level.

64-bit Vista with a 640 gig system drive, 11 gig partition for the factory image, 585 gig partition for the system OS, currently with 465 gigs of free space.

So what I wanted to do was shrink the system partition down to about 185 gigs or so and create a 400 gig data partition. I used the built in defragger and then tried to shrink the volume and Vista will analize the volume fine but then it will only come up with a maximum of 176,169 MB available space to shrink, resulting in 422,887 MB retained system partition, almost exactly the opposite of what I want.

Question is is there a simple fix, a difficult fix or no fix at all (you don't have to give me the non-Vista fixes, I know one or two of those)? "Vista is a great OS" people front and center! Make me believe!

First, why would you use ccleaner to uninstall something? Why not use the OS's uninstall applet?

To answer your question, there's really no way to know what ccleaner did at this point. I'd suggest trying to reinstall the game from safe mode - let's see if that works. If not, try revo uninstaller to completely remove all remnants of the game and then try to reinstall (http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html)

Looking at your current spec, that's pushing it a bit for min. spec to run Vista - for Home Basic (no Aero Glass) you're looking at 512MB, Home Premium 1GB on the RAM front. What graphics card do you have? If it's onboard, go out and buy a graphics card with at least 128MB of RAM. Once you've upped your RAM, you'll notice a considerable performance increase!

Quick history; I was running XP which did have Windows Faxing capabilities. I then upgraded to Vista Home Premium 64 bit and came to realize ONLY Vista Ultimate had Windows Fax and Scan. I then purchased a U.S. Robotics 56K External Faxmodem USB (model 5633B) along with the free software of Classic Phone Tools. Worked great.

NOW, after downloading and installing Vista’ SP1 Update (story for another day) it messed up my faxing. Got it working BUT, did lose one feature. I lost the “printer” feature known as “Capture Fax BVRP”. You know, where I could just simply print any document or photo for that matter and choose “Capture Fax BVRP” as my printer and my Classic Phone Tools would open up and I could fax this document/photo. The Capture Fax BVRP is still there as a printer selection but, when I use it; a box comes up and seems to process it and then nothing happens. My Classic Phone Tools does not open and when I manually open the Classic Phone Tools there is nothing there to fax. A printer icon does appear on my bottom toolbar but, it is empty.

Any suggestions on getting this particular feature back? Thanks.

The new free BVRP Phone Tools DOES work with my 64 bit O.S. Any word document I must save as .rtf (Rich Text Format) and that will fax just fine.

Bottom line, SP1 has been successfully installed and everything is working. Maybe a little differently, but IS working………

Security discussion

These are a very basic set of questions. Possibly there is an article on the web that someone can point me to that fully addresses each of these:

What security protection should I expect from:

a wireless hub/router

a software firewall

a software anti-virus, anti-trojan program

the security built into Vista
The reason I ask this is that I have a Linksys wireless hub with a WEP code activated and I also had Zonealarm with Windows XP. I had my files shared. I thought that the wireless hub should provide hardware based security from anyone being able to "look" at my files and anything behind the hub. I found that Zonealarm was giving me a lot of warnings of malware and other outside people finding me and trying to access my computer and that Zonealarm was stopping this. I don't understand the Linksys hub's capabilities well enough to not ask "why was the hub not keeping these outside intruders out?".

I now have Vista and the security it provides is suffocating. I have a hard time accessing my own files on other computers on my network and you need an ADVANCED IT degree to work around it. I would think that you could provide a secure "knock'em dead" firewall with a Linksys hub that would allow you to be "naked" behind the firewall so you did not have to deal with security at all once you were safe behind the Linksys firewall. I think this shows why I need to learn all I can so I don't leave my UAC off (wh... Read more

If the router is your internet gateway, it can provide hardware firewall protection via Network Address Translation (NAT). Basically when your computer hooks up to the router, you are assigned a private IP address. When your router hooks up with your internet service provider, it is assigned a public IP address. So the world sees your routers address and not your computers so it cannot directly communicate with it.

However, for hosting (web pages, VOIP servers etc.) purposes routers can be configured to forward 1 or more ports from your computer to the internet so folks outside could see your computer. I would check your router's firewall and port forwading settings.

I was infected with the Vista Security 2012 virus. I have since run Malware, Spybot, CCleaner, Microsoft Security Essentials, Microsoft Fix It. It has disabled my firewall and windows security and network sharing. I am unable to turn them on. I have tried to do the windows repair with my disk, that did not help, sfc/scannow has not helped. I do not have a system restore point to go back to either, it was erased. Im stuck. Help.

Hi,I am using Windows Vista Ultimate 6.0.6002 Service Pack 2 Build 6002 and have recently been infected by the Live Security Platinum virus (PUM.Disabled.SecurityCenter) and have cleaned it using the method from here.Everything's been going ok actually, except for the fact that now the whole of my Windows Security Center is unusable. I suspect it is due to the system files that were removed or modified during the removal process. Now Windows Update is not even present in the Services list and Windows Defender gives a "failed to initialize" error. It would be great if you could shed some light to me for this problem.Thank you.

My computer has multiple problems: Congratulation You Won audio/pop up; Windows Security Center pop-ups with fake alerts that it can fix; Vista Security 2011 pop up alerts/scans; This is not a joke you are the 100000 visitor pop ups and some sort of browser redirector. "Vista Security" seems to have disabled my anti-virus program (windows security essentials). There was also a "Java TM Platform Standard Edition" icon in my toolbar, which has since disappeared. I tried to run HijackThis and it won't run. I tried to rename it - still won't run. I have tried MalwareBytes and scans by MSE (when I could still make it work) and nothing was detected or changed. "Vista Security" is throwing up a security alert/system integrity threat/System Hijack/Tracking Software etc. "alerts" every few minutes. Yesterday when I entered Vista Security in the browser search, it crashed the browser. It hasn't done that today, but did send me a "warning" that techguy.org was a threat (don't remember the actual wording- they come so fast.) It seems that my computer is totally unprotected.
I am ready to start over - I have my important files backed up on an external drive. I tried to reinstall Vista, a "clean" reinstall, but it wouldn't let me - it said drivers were missing and I couldn't figure out how to get them - it said on a disc, which I don't seem to have.
Very frustrated - if anyone has advice I ... Read more
