Do You Use a Windows Driver Update Utility?

Q: Do You Use a Windows Driver Update Utility?

I have using DriverMax for the past year and I find it to be usefully as long as you watch which drivers you are updating. Some times driver updated are shown for a device but that device isn't apart of your system. Or DriverMax will show an update for a device that is in your system but the driver may cause BSoD. How do you keep your drivers updated? does anybody know of a good website database to track driver versions?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I think these software like driver apps are not so good for your device they installed another applications and change many settings. So good it not use any driver updater utility. Follow this link to check from windows default service

Windows Update is not telling me I need or can update my Wireless networking, but Intel's Update Driver Utility says I should and is offering the update. How would you recommend I proceed?

A:Should I trust Intel's Driver Update utility or Windows Update?

G'day Rolo,

The difference between the two drivers is that the Windows one is digital signed/tested by Microsoft. I would say that unless the Intel one delivers more benefit than the Windows one, and everything works as expected, then there is no need to update.

You often see this with graphics card drivers too, for example.

Golden

I recently set up a new Dell 7710 Precision Workstation (Xeon E3-1535M v5 w/Intel HD Graphics P530; Nvidia Quadro M5000M; Windows 7 Pro). The Dell Precision Optimizer (DPPO) tells me there are no updates at all (no Critical, Recommended, or Optional). However, the Intel Driver Update Utility tells me I have an older chipset (14.6.1.1030) that should be replaced by a newer chipset (10.0.27). I don't know if the DPPO is taking into account particular aspects of this system that make the 14.6.1.1030 the “correct” (even if not the latest) chipset. Perhaps the DPPO should override the Intel utility. Any thoughts?

A:Driver Updates: DPPO vs. Intel Driver Update Utility

I uninstalled a driver on purpose to test the dell optimizer utility and it is telling me no updates available ! I rebooted the laptop. same thing. In device manager the device is showing as other device with a yellow exclamation mark  !!!! How do I trust the optimizer now eh ?

Just a general question that I didn't find with a Search --

Does anyone know of a good Utility program that scans your system and applications and then updates all of your drivers, etc. automatically? I know there's something called "Oil Change" but I think that is more of an application updater, isn't it?

Nothing critical, would just like suggestions. BTW, I'm currently using Win98Se but looking at upgrading to XP.

Have a great day all!!

A:Driver Update Utility?

I just use the online updates at Microsoft's site:

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

They have a section for drivers to. It's good if your upgrading from 98SE to XP. XP should be better for you, and easier. Except all the updates you have to keep downloading.

Thank You, Have a nice day to.

I downloaded and ran the Intel (R) Driver Update Utility on my ASUS X54C Laptop which is running Win 8.1

I found it at: Intel® Driver Update Utility

I ran the utility and the utility found two updates which I downloaded as per the screenshot below.

My questions are

(1) .. should I install these two updates?
(2) .. is there any risk in installing the updates?

I should mention that I have not had any problems with my laptop and am wondering if I should leave well alone?

A:Intel (R) Driver Update Utility

The Intel driver update utility is safe. These are Generic drivers though, if your not experiencing any problems there's no need to download them if your X54C came with windows 8. The version changes are minimal the chipset for example is for newer hardware(the x54c is at least 3 years old) and the HD graphic are changes for specific video games/screen hardware. Because they are generic drivers provided from Intel and have not been cleared through ASUS there is always a minimal(however small) possibility that it might cause problems and have to roll back which is easy(happened to me once). Best is to go here and see if there are any updates.

When I run the subject program (have latest version - 2.4), the scan tells me my graphics driver (for Win 7, 64-bit) is currently version 10.18.10.4358 and that a newer version, 15.33.42.4385, is available. I click the [Download] button, and it downloads a 124MB file. Then the [Install} button lights up. I click it, it goes thru the motions, but when it finally starts installing, it says it's installing ver. 10.18.10.4358 ! And sure enough, after the install finishes and I reboot the computer, when I do another scan it says I have version 10.18.10.4358 and 15.33.42.4358 is an available update.

What's wrong?

You don't need to use that Intel Utility at all. Just download the correct driver(s) and do it manually.

I have never used that utility, and every Laptop/PC I've ever owned has had Intel CPUs, chipsets and sometimes Graphics, Networks cards etc.

A:Emergency - Driver Update utility gone wrong

Any drivers you download should be from the manufacturer of the device.  Driver update utilities don't care where the drivers come from and can download drivers which actually will not work with your devices.

Hi MW,
Depends on your graphics card, with or without HD,
note1 these are generic drivers if you have an OEM install, use the ones from them, unless your having a problem.

Recently, the WiFi on this particular laptop has been sub-par. Downloading the same file, the WiFi downloads at the rate of 70 kbps (pretty bad) while the Ethernet cable is at 700 kbps ~ 1000 kbps. I know that the Ethernet is almost always faster than the WiFi but the discrepancies are just jarring. I also noted that the signal strength is at maximum so distance isn't an issue. This isn't the case with other devices, such as my phone's WiFi speed, where I can stream HD Youtube videos with no problem.

Possible culprits:

Software:

Whenever I use Intel Driver Update Utility to attempt to fix the problem, it shows that I need to update my WiFi driver and my Bluetooth driver. The weird thing is that after I downloaded and installed those updates, it says that I need to install those same drivers after re-scanning for updates. This tells me that there's something fishy with this laptop's wireless drivers software-wise.

Hardware:

I have an Intel Wireless Dual Band AC 8260 as my wireless driver. I'm not really familiar with these, but I heard somewhere that there are certain frequency speeds (5 GHz, etc...) that need to be configured in order for the driver and the router to be compatible. The weird thing is that I've been using my laptop for 3 months now and it didn't have a problem until two weeks ago, which makes me think that this is a software problem.

Thanks for your help in advance!

A:Weird Intel Driver Update Utility problem? (Wi-Fi driver problem)

Are you on the first Win 10 or the Anniversary version. I noticed when I upgraded with a clean install with anniversary that some drivers are updated to Microsoft installed drivers but aren't 100% compared the first Windows 10 (non insider version) Even with severely outdated drivers all the driver dates are inside Windows are really off. They didn't fix something with drivers and updating them. Nothing extreme but its gonna give some people issues on older machines. I think with insiders earlier on Anniversary are using newish type PC's. My laptop is a 2013 model and nothing special but fully updated/optimized it amazes me. So its gonna take some trial and error with drivers.

I have a Thinkpad T520 (4239) that I just upgraded to Windows 8. I was not able to upgrade from a DVD; I had to use a USB flash drive to upgrade. I'm thinking maybe the problem was that the HLDS GT33N DVD drive did not have the latest firmware; it looks like its firmware version is LT20. On the Lenovo Drivers and Software page for the T520, there is a DVD Firmware Update Utility for Windows XP, Vista, 7 (fwsb10.zip). If you do try it I would run it in Windows 7 Compatibility mode. The chances are higher that it will work. I have the same 4239 but a different DVD drive, Sony model and never release new firmware for it. I don't see why that would prevent you from reading a DVD it burned or OEM pressed DVD.

Hi, and thanks in advance...

Much of this is a repeat to other threads, until the graphic driver problem at the end...

(I also have an Ubuntu partition.)

I'd left my mp3 player plugged in overnight + an Asus Xonar DAC in a usb hub, when Windows wanted to do an update and conflict over drivers ensued. Strange, because I've selected for notification before updating. Also, have not been successful installing any new updates since the end of May. Was seemingly a common problem, I checked into it, too busy/lazy to pursue and succeed. This part is confusing...?

Woke up to blasting fans and unplugged everything peripheral. First, tried setting back to restore points prior to that night - twice. Could restart in Safe Mode and with networking. Then, could restart normally - but, shutdowns after 20 minutes or so.

Got crash logs, saw driver conflicts (not found) - saved.

Came here, read threads, did restart at Last Known Good Configuration. Restart - Nvidia Geforce driver not found. Went to Asus site, downloaded and installed driver (not lastest version, but last approved version and not much later than one that was installed).

It then went into a system cycled start/restart/etc. attempting to find driver, fix itself - forced to do shutdown to stop it.

Restarted this morning in Safe Mode, followed your instructions for posting. It's been running in safe mode for about 20 minutes now.

Hi,
I'm a little confused by one of my update options. I was under the impression that windows 7 was using wddm 1.1, and that the wddm 1.0 drivers have been available for quite some time. I checked and the driver I have is wddm 1.0, released 10/28/2008, version number 8.15.10.1590. So why am I being given the option to update to 'pre-release wddm 1.0'? I tried to get more information to check the version number, but I am just redirected to Winqual Help , which doesn't help me any.

I'd like to test out the wddm 1.1 drivers, and I've read that they're available for 7, but I don't think that these are those drivers, unless there is a typo in the driver title.

yes thats right....

wddm is just a driver model...
its up to the manufacture (here intel) to release wddm 1.1 driver
so until then (most likely they wont) they have to release a wddm 1.1

Windows Display Driver Model - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
that should be a good read....

what they mean pre-release means that these drivers are beta drivers (there is a difference between pre-release drivers and pre-release wddm 1.1 drivers)

I am unable to update the Kernel-mode driver framework ver 1.11 for windows 7 for x64-based systems (KB2685811). I get error: 80073712

Also, I am getting BSOD/stop errors in normal mode that say anything from:

-memory_management 0x0000000001a,

- "A device driver attempting to corrupt the system has been caught. The faulty driver currently being on the kernel stack must be replaced with a working version." GDRO.sys-
address fffff88000626a8f9, base at fffff88006269000, datestamp 49b9d125

I'm not sure if they are related.

When I run in safemode I do not get the BSOD. When in normal mode I will get BSOD consistently when running Norton Full System Scan, specifically when the full system scan gets to the Windows/system32 folder.

System specs:
Processor: Intel 2500K Core Duo Unleashed
MOBO: Gigabyte GA-p67A-UD3P
RAM: I have 4x4 Corsair Vengeance, only using 1 stick of 4GB corsair vengeance currently due to troubleshooting.
GPU: NVIDIA EVGA GTX570HD
HDDs:Intel 180GB SSD and Western Digital Caviar Black 1.0 TB (empty)
PSU: corsair 750 watt
Soundcard: MOBO

When I canoo

A:Unable to install Windows Update: Update Kernel-mode driver framework

I, again, apologize for double posting. I figure I should include the host of other issues I'm having. Maybe they can all be inter related.

-my DVD/RW drive, when connected to mother board in ANY SATA slot, causes the BIOS screen to freeze forever. I have disconnected the drive at this time while trouble shooting. I have tried known-good SATA cables so I know it's either the DVD/RW drive or perhaps a driver or mobo failure.

-I have run the memory diagnostic tool in windows. No issues were reported.

-I have NOT run memtest86 because I do not have a disk drive connected.

-I have had stop-errors (BSODS) such as PFN_list_corrupt, System_service_Exception, Memory_management, IRQ_not_less_or_Equal
All of these could be a result of bad RAM.

I have purchased new RAM as a means to fix my problems. It seemed to work for 2 weeks, then the stop errors returned.

I have a P51 20HH and it refuses to update to Windows 10 1903 due to a complaint of an old version of the Intel RST driver.  I tried following all the instructions to update the driver at both the Intel site, and the official RST driver here on the Lenovo site for P51 downloads.  None actually did anything.  They appeared to work, but actually didn't do anything because the driver update software didn't see any hardware to update.  I turned on debug output on the driver update script and it basically said nothing was applied since there was nothing to do. In my case with the P51 20HH, the driver files are all there but there is zero evidence (Device Manger, etc) that any of them are in use.  I don't have Optane, RAID, etc.  Microsoft update sees the driver as an old version so it won't do the Windows update.  Meanwhile, the Intel driver install packages don't see the driver as usable, so it won't apply the update!  It is a lock out.  So, my solution for the P51 20HH was to rename C:\Windows\System32\drivers\iaStorA.sys to something else.   Proceed with caution with this solution, because if your machine is really using RST, this could cause your storage to become inaccessable, which might put you in a bad boot loop and require a BIOS boot to recovery media.  You should absolutely verify that Device Manager (Storage controllers) does not list anything Intel.  Renaming the driver requires admin priv... Hello everyone. Just a small query. Is it fine if I update my ATI drivers via CCC update utility or should I manually download the latest drivers, uninstall the old drivers (driver sweeper and all) and then install the new ones?

My CCC downloaded and installed the new drivers last night. PC is working fine, but just out of curiosity, is it OK?

A:Is it safe to update ATI drivers via CCC update utility?

- can't see a problem, the AMD link will direct you to the latest and most stable compatible driver available for your card..

- I'm assuming that you aren't messing about with overclocking and the like..

Recently Windows updated my Intel HD Graphics 630 driver. A few days later the same driver was released on Dell's driver support page.
Is there any correlation between Windows Update and Dell's drivers? Who does update the drivers Microsoft themselves or Dell needs to release the driver to Microsoft?
As this is the first time when Windows updated the driver is this how the Intel HD Graphics drivers are to be kept up-to-date via Windows Update?

A:Windows Update vs Dell Update - Intel HD Graphics 530/630 Driver

ZINGAM,
Referring to the Intel HD graphics driver.
Windows gets code from Intel for the driver and they will implement it in the OS. Dell also gets code from Intel and will release it. Also, Intel will post the driver on their site to download. You can uninstall the Microsoft driver if you choose and install the Dell update driver.

On Windows 10 Pro, Version 1511, Build 10586, I've hidden troublesome Nvidia driver updates, using the wushowhide troubleshooter package for Windows 10.

Even with the updates hidden, the next time an update check/cycle is triggered, the Nvidia driver updates are detected and installed. Upon rebooting normally after the driver updates are installed, I see a Windows STOP error (blue screen of death) shortly after signing on Windows.

I can remove the driver updates by uninstalling the associated applications/packages through the Programs and Features control panel. I've also tried to first remove the display adapter in Device Manager, selecting the option to Delete the driver software for this device then removing the associated applications/packages in Programs and Features. As long as I do this before rebooting (after the driver updates are installed), I don't see STOP errors and I can then install an older Nvidia driver that works without STOP errors. If the driver update happens to slip in unnoticed, I can reboot in Safe Mode, sign on and proceed with driver application/package removal, then reboot normally.

The latest (but older) Nvidia driver published by Dell for this laptop apparently works fine (no STOP errors):

But the latest "compatible" Nvidia driver from Windows Update produces frustrating STOP errors, resulting in a largely unusable system:

I've also tried this method to blocking/hiding the Nvidia driver updates, but the result is the same: W... Read more

A:Can't hide NVIDIA driver update in Windows Update

I'm cautiously optimistic I found a reasonable workaround (requires the Pro edition of Windows), by using AppLocker to disallow executables signed by Nvidia to run. This way I can leave the Windows Update service enabled and don't need to constantly fight the Nvidia driver updates that I supposedly "hid" using the wushowhide troubleshooter. For anyone else in this or a similar predicament:

Right-click the Start button and click Run, or use the + R keyboard shortcut to open the Run command dialog.

In the Open text box, type gpedit and click OK.

Expand Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Application Control Policies > AppLocker > Executable Rules. Right-click in the pane on the right and click Create New Rule... In my case, I created a Publisher rule with action Deny for Everyone, and used an Nvidia driver installer file as the reference file to capture the Publisher information.

Create exceptions as necessary. Since I want the older (already installed) Nvidia driver of my choice to function, I created a wildcard Path exception for the Nvidia Program Files folder.

Hope this is helpful...

Hi,
I see that in the Anniversary I can't no more AVOID the automatic search and download of drivers.

I want to STOP this, I want myself to choice my driver and update them.

I read that in "gpedit.msc" > "Windows Update" > "Do not include drivers with WU" > ENABLE

And I did, BUT, Windows Update still see drivers to update such Intel HD, Touchpad, etc.

Why?

I'm about to begin a complete reformat and clean install of the OS on my daughters desktop PC running XP Pro. Any one know of a good (hopefully free) utility to record all the installed drivers so I can reload them after the clean install? I tried one in the distant past on my Win98SE system and it simply did not work.

Hello can anyone help me please. I remember reading somewhere on this site of a utility that I could download, that would back up all of the drivers I have on my machine, I cannot find it again.

I want to clean my hard drive off completely and reload windows. I know I will get in a mess trying to download new drivers from the websites, even if I knew what to look for, so if anyone knows of this programme so I can put them all on disc ready to use I would be most grateful.

Thankyou.

I've found it again, didn't think I would, it is #5 on this page.

This page also gave me all the information I need to start reformatting, so thankyou all who posted there, with a little luck I should be ok.

Hello,

I have an ASUS G1S-X1 Laptop.
I need to update the driver for my wireless internet, and to do so the driver's instructions for the 64bit windows says I need to the wireless console utlity.

So i go to the utility section, and there's only the 32bit software there.

Do i install the 32bit then the 64bit driver, or just install the 64 bit?

Also, im running windows 7, however the asus driver support site only gives an option of vista 32bit and 64bit, and as far as i'm aware, the vista 64bit drivers work just as well for windows 7.

any ideas?

A:32-bit Utility needed for 64bit DRIVER?

Check with Device Manager for the driver name. You need an x64 driver if running Windows 7 x64. The console utility sounds like a configuration app that takes zero config away from Windows.

Create a system restore point, then install the driver.

Hey everyone. I previously had Driver Booster installed on my computer and I like the software a lot because it finds drivers and updates them for you without the hassle of me having to find them myself and install them. However, when I posted a thread on here worrying that my computer had malware, the malware specialist had me remove Driver Booster from my computer. I am pretty sure it's not malware and I am not sure why he/she had me to remove it. I am wanting to reinstall it but I wanted to have your expert advice on whether or not I should first.

A:Is Driver Booster a good utility?

Because it's garbage. Drivers can't be 'boosted' nor 'fixed' so that is a marketing ploy in the name and products. Drivers in fact rarely need to be updated unless they address a specific issue someone is having, having a utility randomly install/update drivers from whatever resources it finds on the internet is not recommended by experts nor is it safe. If you think a driver needs then the best way is to download the proper and official driver from the hardware manufacturer.
