USB drive won't show on desktop / files won't show in folders

Q: USB drive won't show on desktop / files won't show in folders

I have a prob with my Seagate 1TB external hard drive working on my G4 Powerbook (Leopard OSX). I have a Maxtor 200 gb drive that works perfectly. But The 1TB drive doesn't always appear on the desktop but does show in the system profiler. When it does show up on the desktop my files missing from from folders. Finally on the few times that files show up, I can't open them. I had error messages about permission to open the files but the drive and files all have read/write permission.

I use the drive for backup. The files on this drive are from the Maxtor drive, random disks and my thinkpad which runs Vista.
Any insite would be greatly appreciated.

Preferred Solution: USB drive won't show on desktop / files won't show in folders

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

It's Vista's Security System. Go through the help file and it will tell you how to turn it off

Hello,

I have several questions as I could not find the answers after I read all available info about it.

I made the Show desktop button invisible by changing its icon to taskbar background color in imageres.dll. However, the space that the button occupied is the same. Is there any way to permanently shrink the button to a width of 1 pixel? (Show Desktop Button Remover does not work for it as it does not fully shrink the button, and after taskbar update/reset the button restores again)

Is it possible to format the location of files in folders ? i.e. decrease the space from the edge and the distance between the files/folders?

Is it possible to adjust the height of the field in the column name in the table mapping files?

Is it possible to reduce the distance between the elements of the Start menu? (Classic Shell is installed but there is no option for it in settings)

A:Shrink the Show desktop button and reduce space between files/folders

Hello at386,
i'm sorry that i can't really help you. But you said, that you changed the "Show Desktop"-Icon in imageres.dll. Can you tell me which ordinal this image has, if you meant the icon in the bottom right corner (see attachment)?

Hello! I have external Samsung G3 USB station. I had two different partitions: one 'primary' (just for files) and one 'logical' (for files also). All the time I use WinXP, Linux and Vista on different computers mostly. Everything was fine... But when I bought a brand new DVD with Win7 and installed on my brand new laptop the strange things became. Now I?ll try to define my problem as much as possible clearly and accurately.
My laptop (with Win7) shows that 'logical' drive but when I go in there I can't see my folders and files (they are not hidden of course!).
In properties I can see that these files ARE there (I suppose that by the free and used space of that partition and I really know how GBs was there so in properties seems that anything is not lost).
When I connect drive to a different computer with let's say Vista it doesn't show these files also. Same with XP. But I can reach my files on Linux.
Another strange thing is that all the information in the other partition ('primary' drive) is accessible without any probs.
Now I copied all these files into Linux and used to format that partition (NTFS) and made it 'primary' also (I did it on Win7). So I have two ?primary? drives now. Then I brought all the information (from Linux) back into that drive (under my investigation). Everything was fine and I was so glad... till I restarted mtfk Computer
When I use Norton Partition Manager for browsing tha... Read more

Hello everyone

I have a bunch of files and folders sitting on my Desktop so that I can get to them easily and so that I don't forget about them. I tend to forget about stuff if the icons aren't visible, and these files relate to important tasks that I should not forget. However, ideally (e.g. for backup purposes) these files should not be on the C: drive, on the Desktop, but in a single parent folder on the D: drive. So, I want to see the icons on the Desktop as if the files are there on the Desktop, but I don't want the files to be actually on the Desktop. What solutions can you think of?

In Windows XP, I would simply drag their parent folder to the edge of the Desktop, and Windows would then create a toolbar that shows all the files and folders. However, Windows 7 dropped this feature. I also know that one can create a toolbar on the Windows 7 taskbar, but my taskbar is already full (despite being three icons deep and situated along the longest edge of my portrait screen), and there's no room for yet another toolbar on it.

I don't want to simply create shortcuts to all the files because then I would have to remember to create new shortcuts for new files, and I'm prone to forget. Simply using shortcuts would also make it difficult to move new files to that location (I'd have to move the file to the D: drive folder manually and then remember to create a shortcut to it to the Desktop again).

I was wondering if there was a way to "stick" an open fol... Read more

It would appear that the "Folder Portals" feature of StarDoc Fences is a partial solution, if you don't use the Classic theme (which I use).

Nimi Places actually gets closer to it (tis a pity Nimi Places use icons and lettering that is different from what the user uses elsewhere on his desktop).

I am trying to setup a default user or machine setup for how win7 handles folder view options. I want show hidden folders to be set to on for all users and the hide extensions for know file types to be unchecked or turned off ffor all users (so extensions show)
I have located them in the registry but they do not seem to be applied to all users.
Below is the registry settings I have set

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"Hidden"=dword:00000001
"HideFileExt"=dword:00000000

When I create a new account to test the folder options are still hiding hidden files and not showing extensions.

Any suggestions

thx

A:show hidden folders show file extensions thru registry

You're close but in the wrong area.

Code:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"HideFileExt"=dword:00000000
"Hidden"=dword:00000001
show and hide files is a profile specific key and therefore can be modified by user accounts. if you would like to change the default, navigate to key:
HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\current version\explorer\advanced\folder\hidden and \hidefileext
there are keys in there that set default behaviors.

When i hooked it up to my laptop it showed up empty. I went into folder options and clicked on show hidden files and folders. Everything came up but it was grey/transparent. I then copied the files to another hdd for backup.

Then i formatted the hdd and put on a fresh new OS. Id like to mention i have a second internal drive that i use for backups but it wasnt backed up recently when this issue happen so i had to take out the main drive and use it as an external to back up onto another external drive.

I have this strange thing happening. I'm using Windows XP. In Windows Explorer, in the Tools, Folder Options dialog box, when I select "Show hidden files and folders", then click Apply and OK, the hidden files and folders are not shown. When I go back into the dialog box, the option is not selected anymore. Instead it reverts back to "Do not show hidden files and folders".I quickly searched online and people are saying its a virus. I scanned the PC with Avast Antivirus, Eset Online, Trend Micro Housecall Online, Defender, AVG Anti Virus, Spybot, Ad-aware, Super Antispyware, Rougeremover, Panda Online, SDFix., Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, Deckard's System Scanner. Besides tracking cookies, Avast was the only scan to find something. I used the "Delete" option when I was asked what to do. Hi everyone,

Need some help with an interesting problem I'm having. I'm currently using a laptop with Windows XP installed. Both the choices for Show Hidden Files and Folders options are on for Folder Options. So, currently I can't see any of the hidden files. I included a screenshot of the problem.

Any idea on how to fix this? Maybe modifying a registry entry? Other buttons seems to work fine, except for the above mention problem. I tried to click on Restore Defaults, and the defaults are all restored except for this one.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

A:Can't show hidden files and folders

Greetings zentana01, and Welcome to TSF!

For you to be able to 'see' the hiddens system folders, you will need to check the box marked "Display the contents of system folders".

Do this and they will be visible on your C: drive.

Windows? has this box unchecked by default, as it is considered to be 'dangerous' for the uninitiated to be tampering with the system folders, in case one is accidently deleted, which could render the O/S inoperable.

Hopefully this answers your question; if not, feel free to post back with any other queries/concerns.

HiI wasn't sure whether this was a general Windows problem, or a possible malware. I'm guessing the latter:I am a student at University, and about two days ago when logging onto a PC in the labs, I noticed a folder called 'desktop.exe' on the desktop (a folder, not an executable). I didn't bother with it, except to notice that it looked odd, and I plugged in my flash drive. Windows recognized and labeled it as the H drive. I had My Computer open and was browsing through my files, when I noticed a folder was generated in the root directory of my flash drive, called "H.exe". Unfortunately I was in too much of a rush to consider it, and the folder disappeared (it was probably set to 'hidden').I immediately thought my flash was infected with someone's homemade malware, but I had no choice other than to plug it into my laptop at home to do some work. I had almost forgotten about the problem, until I tried viewing hidden files and folders and found the "Show hidden files and folders" option remained unchecked no matter how many times I repeated its selection. Incidentally, on reading your tutorial http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-see-hidden-files-in-windows/, I found that "Hide protected operating system files" also does not remain unchecked when I select it.I have no problem other than the irritation of not being able to see my hidden files/folders. Hi,You are dealing with a flashdrive infection.I understand that you need help in order to get rid of the malware that is present on your system - But you need to help us first..I notice that you never scanned with an Antivirus previously before starting this thread - because you don't even have an Antivirus installed! This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world. That's why I want you to install one first!!* Please install Avira Antivirus: http://www.free-av.com/This is a free Antivirus.Perform a full scan with Avira and let it delete everything it is finding. Then reboot. After reboot, open your Avira and select "reports".There doubleclick the report from the Full scan you have done. Click the "Report File" button and copy and paste this report in your next reply together with a new HijackThislog. Then we'll start from there, because it really makes no sense otherwise that we clean this up manually if an Antivirusscan is not present which should be able to deal with most and prevent further reinfection.

Hello. Newbie Here. I have Win 7. I just purchased this Dell Laptop with preloaded software and apparently free viruses. I've used the following to disinfect the laptop. Malwarebytes, Sophos, TDSSKiller, Spybot S&D, ComboFix and running Avast Antivirus. I think this computer is virus free, but I don't know for sure.

I think the virus did some damage to my registry. When I attempt to Show Hidden Folders by clicking the radio button, then click appy,....Ok, it doesn't work. When I open the Folder Options box again, it shows the files are HIDDEN. It automatically reverts back to DONT SHOW. I've tried to use Unhide.exe, but a pop up applet says "There was a problem retrieving a necessary environment variable. Unhide has Terminated"!

Inside the Unhide.exe CMD box it says "appdata doesn't exist! Unhide Terminated! I would love to get this resolved. Let me know what you need. Thanks in advance.

Hello all,

I've had this virus for a little while now. After several boot scans with Avast! and even painfully slow system scans in safe mode this little ******* is still here.

Symptoms:
*Cannot show hidden files or folders
*My drives / partitions are impartial to double clicks. It I try to open the drive the normal way (via double clicking) it asks me to choose which program I would like to open the drive with. My only work around is right click then Explore option.

I've followed all given instructions. Here's the logs.
Any and all help is appreciated, thank you.

Is there any way in windows 7 the show hidden files and folder and show system files, however hide only desktop.ini's and thumbs.db? Don't need to seem them. Annoying.

A:show hidden files folders (exclude files)

Hello event3horizon,

The only way that I know of would be to have Show hidden files, folders, and drives selected (dotted), and to check the Hide protected operating system files box. Of course, all hidden protected OS files will hidden as well. Hidden Files and Folders - Show or Hide
If you like, you could use the context menu from either step 2 or 3 in the tutorial below to quickly toggle to show or hide all hidden files when you like. This way you see them all when you want to, and none when you don't.Show - Hide Hidden Files - Add to Context Menu
Hope this helps,

Windows 7 Beta

Today I discovered that I cannot click on the "Show Hidden Files, Folders and Drives" radio button and make it stay clicked. I needed to access the hidden "temp" folder under my account folder and when I tried to make the hidden files visible I noticed this issue. When I click on the "show hidden.." radio button and click Apply it appears to stay clicked. I still cannot see the hidden files and when I refresh the selection window the radio button is shown as unclicked again.

Besides that, Windows 7 is working perfectly. No complains.

A:Show Hidden files, folders and drives does not work

Go to the Start button and type in "Windows Explorer" (without the quotes)
At the top of the search box will be a link for Windows Explorer - right click on it and select "Run as Administrator"
Then try to Show Hidden Files.

A:Show hidden files and folders doesn't work

If you are comfortable with using the registry, you can check this setting.
Start> Run > type: regedit and hit OK.
Go to this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\
Advanced
Click on the Advanced folder in the left pane and in the right panel, look for the value name Hidden.
The value data should be 1 = show hidden, 2 = do not show
If you make a change, you have to reboot for it to take effect.

Hi Seven Forums,

I am looking for a solution to the following. Some of my files and folders are hidden (and I would like to keep them hidden). I can view these in Explorer windows/Navigation Panes because I have elected to Show Hidden Files and Folders through Windows. However, I cannot see these files in my cascading Classic Shell Start Menu, nor in any other types of cascading menus, including stock Windows taskbar toolbars (e.g. right click taskbar > Toolbars > Desktop).

How can I view hidden files and folders in fly-out menus in addition to Explorer windows?

Thank you for your kind support!

A:Show Hidden Files and Folders in Cascading Menu

I think thst is a price you will pay for using the Classic shell options. That is just obeying the hidden file instruction. If you want to show the files that are now hidden then you will have to "un hide" them. I don't think you will be able to pick and choose where they should appear! Who are you trying to hide them from anyway?

I backed up all of my data files over to a CD/ROM before restoring my Windows 7 PC due to a hard drive failure.

After successfully restoring the Windows 7 PC, I also restored my backed up files from the CD/ROM using HP RecoveryMgr, which was included as part of the backup process. Then I see all folders show "This folder is empty", even though the folder "Properties" show that the folder is not empty and contains files being backed up during the restore.

How can I make the files in the restored folders visible/accessible again?

Thanks a lot,

Welcome to the windows 7 forum.

Have you verified that you have show hidden/system files visable?
you can do this in control panel folder options and uncheck the options for show hidden/system files.
Your restore program might be hiding the files by making them hidden or system.

Just an idea.

I have been running XP PRO on the same custom PC for several years. One disk (IDE, secondary slave, 500GB) has 3 partitions; today win explorer will not display folders or files on the third partition (letter E, 270GB) of that drive. Other 2 partitions on same drive display properly and are accessible. I made a new test folder on E; it was accepted; but then it disappeared. I tried to make another new folder with same test name, it was rejected: ~"a folder by same already exists." Drive E is shown as "healthy" and its properties show drive 75% used, indicating data is still there. Attempts to copy folders/files from backup drive (fortunately copies of most data exist on another drive) give same response. Check disk dies in Phase 2: "Windows was unable to complete the disk check". I have searched net and not found any help. Is this a disk problem, OS problem, Windows explorer problem, or other problem? Are any obvious fixes available? Would a sector-by-sector clone to a new disk fix this? Thanks in advance for any help.

A:win explorer doesn't show folders on drive

If check disk failed, the chances are the HDD is failing. Has too many bad sectors in the E: partition. You can download the ISO image for Drive Fitness in my signature and burn the image to CD using IMGBurn and boot off of the newly created CD and run the Quick and Advanced tests on the Drive. If there are any errors it can't fix, the drive will need to be replaced.

I tried selecting the "show hidden files and folders" and unchecking the "hide system files" options in folder options, no change. Infact when i went back to the folder options, "do not show hidden files and folders" was selected and "hide system files was checked". WHAT DO I DO NOW? Someone please give me a solution. Hi there

Is there any way to customize (or use an alternative to) File explorer.

Here's an example from DOLPHIN (a Linux type of File explorer) - breaks the folders down into decent alphabetical order and the files within them etc - makes navigation very easy indeed.

File explorer is a DOG compared to this - especially when you have large folders with loads of files in them -- the serach is better too !!!!.

Cheers

If you open the my computer> c drive> then program files it is the same thing nothing in the window but if you click on the folders button on the toolbar it opens up like the program files folder and in the drop down box again like it is opening windows explorer on the side. But still nothing in the window.

Hello ... I have a flash drive attached to my Netgear wireless router that I make backups to and transfer files to and from other computers at home. It was formatted as NTFS and set up in the router about 2 weeks ago. I just noticed yesterday that all the folders in the drive have dates of 2003 -- even new folders I created today. The files inside all seem to be fine, with correct dates.

I am positive the drive did not start out this way. It was functioning normally. Does anyone know what could have caused these weird folder dates and how to prevent this from happening in the future? Is there any way to fix this? Could the backup program I am using be causing this problem? It is Syncback and it is doing automated backups to this drive.

The computer I am using is a new Asus T300 Chi with Windows 8.1.

Any ideas? I am stumped.

--Pat

A:Folders on a network attached drive show wrong date

It probably isn't the drive but the Router. You may have to enter the Router setup while connected via Ethernet cable and check the date. Check the documentation for the address to use in your browser, something along the line of 192.168.1.1, the last two numbers will vary between brands and maybe between models.

Hello All,

They are all old excel and word documents but not sure if removing them would cause an issue

What are they/how are they created?

I'm on Windows 7 Home Premium x64 and Office 2007

Thanks!

A:What are ~$ files that appear on desktop when hidden files show

As far as I'm aware they are desktop .ini files that are written to the desktop whenever you make a change to the file so that the file/folder remembers the change.

If you delete the .ini file it will return to its default settings.

http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch001060.htm

Is there any particular reason why you want to show hidden files? Obviously, they are hidden for a good reason.

Try this workaround if you insist on showing hidden files:

Enable Show hidden files, folders and drives but make sure that Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) is checked.

This will keep the desktop.ini hidden while showing other hidden files.

Hi,I understand that you need help in order to get rid of the malware that is present on your system - But you need to help us first..I notice that you never scanned with an Antivirus previously before starting this thread - because you don't even have an Antivirus installed!
