I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a G500 Ideapad that will not boot or boot to the bios no matter what I try. It goes directly to a blank screen (back light is on monitor but nothing appears) no matter which button I push to turn it on. The Lenovo screen does not appear. I have removed everything including the hard drive, reseated the ram and the processor and have even unplugged the cmos battery after removing the main battery for days and it still will not go to bios. This happened two other times but I was able to get it to go to bios. I have upgraded from win 8.1 to 10.

I tried the hard reset. Nothing. I even tried to put another hard drive from another computer in but still get that maddening blank screen right after turning on. Trying Fn + F1 or F2 does nothing. I would love if someone has some idea I can try to get to the bios I have not tried.

I have a 2-3 Year old y50 and most of the time it stays plugged in. But on battery, as soon as I plug it out, the laptop screen shuts off. I have an external monitor and that stays fine, as well as if I plug the power out, the computer still registers the laptop screen. I bought it with Windows 8.1 and now have upgraded it to 10, but the problem came when I replaced the screen. Initially, it flickered on AC power removal, and I didn't think of it too much, but now its completely blank. I've tried to change power plans, set sleep on battery to never, and even the fn buttons.  I most likely think it is a problem from the laptop being at 50hz on battery while the monitor is still at 60hz. (In the monitor settings, it doesn't have an option to change the monitor hz.)Is there a potential solution I can use?

To access BIOS menu turn OFF the Laptop and press the NOVO button located beside power button.
Then to reset the BIOS to its defaults click on ?F9? Key and select YES.
Now click on ?F10? Key to save the changes that are done in BIOS, the computer will automatically restart.

The first thing I look at if a machine hangs at startup is the USB ports.  Physical damage can create shorts which cause these symptoms.  Check for bent pins or a tongue broken off.

Hello everyone, this is a bit of an emergency for me, I'll sapre you the story and just state that I am a university student and I use my G500 everyday on campus for notes and communication. I bought a Lenovo G500 last year in July and it has been working well for me up until tonight. I have upgraded the hard drive to a Samsung 840 Pro SSD and installed Linux Mint 16, 32-bit. Yes, I had to disable the UEFI boot setting in the BIOS to install linux. So tonight I was using my laptop for some work and then wanted to watch a DVD while in bed. I inserted a DVD but couldn't get the OS to recognize it. No big deal I thought, I'll just restart and see if that fixes the problem. Upon restart I get the Lenovo splash screen...and that's it. The computer jsut hangs up there. Now I've been running this G500 on Linux since I bought it, without any issues. So I doubt it is the linux distribution (which I have kept up to date). Here are the troubleshooting techniques I have tried (and I have used the search function on this forum already, the solutions I found so far do not help/apply to my case). 1.) I powered down the system, removed the battery, unplugged the A/C adapter and held the power button for about 20 seconds to discharge the system. I then plugged the A/C adapter back in WITHOUT re-installing the battery and pressed the power-on button. No change in behavior. 2.) I re-installed the factory Seagate Hard Drive that still has Windows 8 installed (I kept... Read more

hi MadMechanic,
Welcome to the Forums.
Can you try the following:
1. Remove the AC adapter, battery and HDD.
2. Press and hold the power button for 20secs and then reconnect the AC adapter
3. Press OneKey Recovery button and choose BIOS Setup.
- Link to picture
If this works, try resetting the BIOS to the default settings by pressing F9 (or Fn+F9) then press F10 (or Fn+F10) to save and exit. When finished, try inserting the stock HDD (or the Samsung 840 Pro SSD) and see if it'll boot.
If the problem remains, try reseating the RAM (or if you have two memory modules, try using one stick only). If this doesn't work, I'm afraid you may need to contact Lenovo for service.

My laptop was plugged into my tv via HDMI. I ran a virus scan, then restarted. During the restart, I unplugged it from the tv. When the laptop booted back up, it displayed the lenovo logo, then the screen went dark. I waited a while, then tried plugging the HDMI cable back in... and windows (10) appeared as normal on the TV, but still not on the laptop screen. I am able to turn the dark screen contrast up and down with F keys, so it's not completely black.

Basically, I can use my laptop when plugged into the tv, but the laptop screen itself is black. How can I get the screen working again?

A:Lenovo G500 screen issue

Try pressing the F10 key, you should see more settings on the TV screen where can select which display is used.
If that doesn't work press and hold down the Fn (Function) key before pressing F10.

I've got a problem with my laptop, a 2010 HP G60-635DX. First, a little history. This was my wife's laptop until she dropped it and broke the display screen. We hooked it up to a monitor and she was good to go. Last Christmas I got her a new computer and again she was all set. In the meanwhile I've been using this old Dell laptop from 2006 with WinXP in it. Works, but is slow as all get out. A few months ago I decided to use my wife's old computer for myself. It comes with Windows 7 and works quite well. Last June I made the mistake of trying the Windows 10 upgrade, and what a disaster that turned out to be. So I reverted back to Win7, but I lost all the drivers that came with it, so I was stuck. So recently I bought a new screen for my wife's old computer, and I installed it today. So guess what? The screen works fine, but all I get is a blank white screen Nothing at all! It's as if the computer can't display anything at all. I just don't understand it. The computer fires up, but that's it. No start screen, no nothing. Just a blank white screen.
Anybody have any ideas as to what's wrong, and how I could fix this?

A:New laptop screen shows just a blank white screen

I got the computer working! Last night I rechecked the connections to the screen and made sure that they were solid, then all of a sudden the Startup Utility came on, asking me what I wanted to do. So I opted to wipe the HD clean and revert it to the original factory specs (don't worry, I have all important files backed up already). I made sure the connector cable was in there good, then I stuck a piece of electrical tape on it just for safety. Now the computer runs as good as new, and I don't have to spend any money taking it in to a shop.
The moral of the story is this - always check and recheck your connections. Lesson learned!

I am having startup problem with my Lenovo G500.
I closed the lid after using the laptop with power cable connected. After 3 or 4 hours I just picked up the laptop and put it in the bag for traveling. After 12 hours when I took it out it was too hot.
I tried to switch it on but it stuck on Lenovo startup screen. Then I removed HDD and started again, It showed error of no bootable device. Then I connected HDD and started it worked fine for few days.
Now again same problem of startup screen.
I've done power flee procedure as well but of no use now.
Can anybody please guide me what's the suspected problem in the laptop?

A:G500 - Startup stuck at Lenovo screen

hi nasirraza2009,
Welcome to the Forums.
When the machine gets stucked on the lenovo logo, can you boot into the BIOS (by pressing F2 or Fn+F2) and check if the HDD is detected
   - Link to picture
In addition, If the machine boots again into Windows again, to un a diagnostic on the HDD to verify its health.
  - Lenovo Storage Test or
  - HD Tune.
If you're unable to run a diagnostic on the drive then I recommend you contact lenovo and report the problem as there's likely an issue on the HDD / HDD's connection to the motherboard (or other internal component).

Hi everyone, I have a strange issue with the screen of my Lenovo G500. I've had this device for 3 years now and it always worked fine. A couple of month ago, it started not to show the boot animation anymore, so the screen isn't on until the Windows 10 lockscreen appears. But that is not the biggest problem. After every Windows update, the screen won't even turn on at all. I know the device is booting, I can hear the fan, the LEDs at the bottom are working and when I connect it to an external monitor, that monitor shows the lockscreen and everything works fine. I then have to shutdown the laptop and remove the battery and turn it on again and again. until the screen works again, which sometimes takes a couple of hours. What's weird though is that once it works again, the boot animation is there, but only once. When I turn on the laptop the next time, it's gone again.I hope someone on here knows how to fix that problem.

Once the diagnostic is completed, check the "Display" tab to see if all the Features inside the DirectX are Enabled..By the way, what version of the ATI Display Driver was working this World of Warcraft before?

Hello all,

Newbie here with limited (if any) knowledge of how PC's work (so to speak).

I've read similar problems on here (my apologies for repeating the post if it's been answered a million times) but i need answers in really basic English not techie...

I have a MESH Elite A800 Power (that's what it says on the sticker) which has been working great until now because when i turn the power button on at the back and then switch it on (with the button on the front) i hear the fans inside start and the hard drive makes a noise (no beeps though) and a green and a orange light come on but that's it...
Nothing appears on the monitor (it stays in stand by mode).
I've tried 3 monitors and it's the same for all of them (all 3 were powered separately with their own plug). Neither of the disk drives open when i press the buttons either.
I took the side panel off to see if there was anything obvious but i don't know what i'm looking at. When i turn the power switch on the back of the PC on a green LED lights up on the main board, then when i switch it on, the fans on the PSU, the Processor (?) and 'another' fan all start spinning, and the hard drive makes a noise (as i already said).

It seems as though there's power to the PC but it's not doing anything to the monitor.

Any idea what it could be?

Let me know if there's any more info required.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

I've read as many articles as I can find on blue screens, but mine seems to have progressed to the next stage - completely blank! I can access 'safe mode' but can't get any icons. The problem is as folloows, can anybody help please?

-I scanned an email attachment with Norton Internet Security, but it failed to pick up malware.

-A whole series of trojans were downloaded followed by a series of blue screen messages.

-I tried to resolve the issue by downloading the free version of AVG because Norton was frozen, but after a few minutes of running on the computer it crashed completely.

-I now have a completely blank blue screen. I can enter 'Safe Mode' with or without a cursor, but no icons.

-Is there any way or product that will help me recover my PC from this situation, or will I have to re-format the drive?

-Can I recover any programmes/software and/or files from my corrupt hhd?

-Would it be feasible to install a new hhd and use that to scan the old one for viruses?

A:Completely blank blue screen - help!!!

Hi lesgreenwood, and welcome to TSF.

I can see why you tried to use avg but to be honest 2 av's on the same system spell: recipe for disaster, and Norton being involved probably made it a whole lot worse.

There is only one way really, to get this sorted out and here it is.

We recommend that you read this article? "IMPORTANT - 5 Step Process: Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help"; follow the instructions very carefully; then, post all the requested logs and information; as instructed, in the HiJackThis Log Help Forum.
(Simply, click on the coloured links to be re-directed.)

Please ensure that you create a new thread in the HiJackThis Log Help Forum; not back here in this one.

When carrying out The 5 Steps, if you cannot complete any of them for whatever reason, just continue on with the next one until they are all completed.
However,it is extremely important to make mention of the fact that you could not complete any of the steps in your post to The HJT Help Forum; where an Analyst will assist you with other workarounds.

Hi guys,
Let me start off with the specs ? this is a custom build:
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OS
Gigabyte GAH61N-USB3 mobo
Intel i5-2400 CPU
4GB Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR3 1333 RAM
1TB 5400RPM 2.5" HDD
MSI N620GT-MD1GD3/LP GeForce GT 620 GPU
Slot-loading CD/DVD?RW optical drive
Dell 2208WFP 22" LCD monitor, hooked up on DVI

The problem I'm having is that on bootup, everything looks fine and runs normally until the logon screen is supposed to come up. After the initial Windows loading logo, the screen goes completely black and then the monitor falls to sleep. Nothing will wake it up, and I can't connect via VNC either so I think the computer is hanging at that stage.

However, in safe mode, the logon screen comes up fine and I can login and everything works properly. In device manager, the graphics card shows up properly, but when I go to the screen resolution settings, it does not display the name of the card.

I have tried switching to VGA and that doesn't work. My BIOS is set to PCIE graphics primary, onboard graphics secondary. The onboard graphics work properly if I disconnect the graphics card. All the drivers for the graphics card are installed and were working before this started.

I have tried reinstalling the drivers but that didn't help. The only thing that temporarily worked was to disconnect the graphics card, uninstall the onboard graphics drivers, and then restart and reconnect the graphics card. However, after I restarted a seco... Read more

Hi. This is my first post on the forums and I hope someone can help me.

The Dell XPS 2710 All-In-One that I bought for my 10-year-old son 15 months ago (yes, that means the warranty is expired) will not boot. No post, no beep, nothing. Just a brief flicker of light on the screen, no words, nothing. The machine gets casual use and there is nothing to indicate what could have caused the problem. I did not upgrade the BIOS recently, so it's not like it was a bad BIOS upgrade or anything. I've tried hitting the F1, the F2, the F12, and the DEL keys during boot. No result.

The video is working. I know this because I can connect my laptop to the HDMI-in port and I can see the desktop of my laptop just fine. So the issue is NOT the video. My son uses this machine for homework and occasional movies in his room. I would like to fix the computer if I can. I am handy with computers and built several machines from the ground-up in the past.

I believe the most likely scenario is that the motherboard has gone bad; there are numerous posts around the internet about the 2710 AIO motherboards being unreliable. I saw a posting on the Dell forums from a guy who said Dell Tech Support replaced his 2710 motherboard five times. I see some of these motherboards selling on eBay for around $200. I'm toying with the idea of getting one. I've looked at the service manual for the 2710 and I'm fairly confident I could replace the board.

Has anyone had experience with swapping out ... Read more

Ok, I removed all RAM from the motherboard (there were two sticks) and disconnected the SATA hard drive connector. Then I turned on the machine and got two very loud beeps, but still no video on the screen showing any kind of POST activity. The beeps were the first sounds I have ever heard during the boot-up procedure on this machine.

I put the RAM back in and re-connected the SATA cable. Back to the way it was, no video, no post, no beeps.

I'm somewhat at a loss for what I have determined . . . does this mean that the motherboard is technically functional and that some other device on the machine is causing the problem? Am I right in assuming that if I didn't hear the two beeps, then I would have certainty that the motherboard was bad? Since it does beep, the solution becomes murkier, I suppose.

I can't help but feel that somehow the BIOS on the machine has become corrupted. Not sure at all how that could have happened, though, since I have not upgraded the BIOS in over a year. I can't remember what BIOS version I have, but it had been working fine for the past year with no issues.

Thanks for any other help/suggestions you can provide.

I just finished a custom built system:

i3 3.0ghz
MSI p55m-gd41
nvidia 220 pcie
4gb kingston ddr3 (2 sticks in slots 1/3)

My problem is, once i boot from the dvd, it says "loading files" with the long progress bar across the bottom of the screen.

Once that finishes, it goes to blank screen. I let it sit for about 12 hours and the screen stays blank. I never see any Install GUI/Win Logo or anything. It never really gets to Step 1

I've used this DVD to install on a few diff. computers fine.

So far, I tried booting GParted from the CD to try to format it, but that won't boot for me. Keep getting "CD Not Found" error message. I think this may be because of a kernel issue with SATA.

Anyhow, I did get Ubuntu to boot and even install but I can't partition my disc (thought a 100gb partition would help install win7)

A:Install Goes to blank screen BEFORE logo shows

Try using free Partition Wizard CD which will autostart.

Let files load, select 1 for screen res, Wipe HD with zeroes, then try installing Win7 with GRUB (which interferes) gone. Use Custom install>Drive tools to create New, format first.

I've been trying to solve this problem for over a months, going on different forums, trying to contact a one on one guy to help me, pressing all types of buttons on my keyboard but nothing seems to be working!

I have an all in one Dell desktop that refuses to display not even the start up logo. This problem happened right after I updated my computer. The update said it was going to automatically restart but it didn't and just turned off so I decided to turn it on and thats when it all begun.

I'm not 100% sure if it was the update or could be another problem. I should mention that when i turn on my computer an amber or orange light is present as if it's sleeping rather than the normal white light.

I've tried to reinstall windows on a flash drive but I'm lost and don't know where to go past the everything is installed in the flash drive now I plug it in.

I've haven't had any success in finding a solution anywhere near close so I would really appricate the help!

Hi I am new to this forum, but I have been browsing it and reading through messages for the past couple of days.

I'm hoping someone will be able to help me with a problem I am having on my computer!

On Thursday evening I used my computer as normal. I was having problems with my printer, and the technical support people told me to change some settings in the printer and faxes section, which I did with no problems at all. I am not sure if that is in anyway related to my current problem, but that is the only recent change to anything on my computer. So after making those changes I turned off the computer for the night.

Yesterday morning I turned it on because I wanted to fill in an online job application by the afternoon, but I noticed my internet security would not turn on, even though it is set to start with the computer. Then I realised that nothing I opened would show up in the task bar. I also noticed the language icon, 'EN' is on the left hand side, next to the start button, instead of on the right hand side next to the time.

I went online and tried to copy and paste, but copy and paste will not work. I can't open new windows by clicking on links, and I can't check my emails or log in to an instant messenger. I can't drag and drop either.

Getting worried, I tried to do a system restore, but when it eventually opens, the system restore screen is a white blank box. Help and Support will not open either, and I tried typing the url for system... Read more

Hello! C:

My Satellite A500-1F7 doesn't start up anymore- when I try to turn it on, the Toshiba-logo appears, but a few seconds later, the screen goes completely blank. If I press F2 while the logo is still shown on screen, the setup menu opens. F12 works as well.

At first I thought my laptop just needed a new battery, since it had been urging me to change it for quite some time and the battery-led was out. Now I got a new battery - still doesn't work.
If anybody has an idea, what the reason might be or what I could do to fix it, please help me!
Sadly, I am a total computer-noob.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read all this!

A:Satellite A500-1F7 - after Toshiba-logo the screen goes completely blank

Oh my gosh!
*Update:* The CPU fan suddenly turned on, so I decided to wait and see. After about an hour, a loading bar and "? Microsoft Corporation" appeared on the screen. Also, my laptop made very high-pitched bleeping noises. And now, another 37 minutes later, it seems to be back to normal.

I have a very strange problem. My home computer runs on Win XP Home edition with SP2 and IE 6. I have two user accounts in this computer (both have administrative rights). In one account, everything works fine. In the other one, when I opened the Windows Update, I got a blank screen.

I can upgrade from IE 6 to IE 7.0 (from a CD) with the good user account, and the newly installed IE 7 worked fine in the good account, but not in the bad account--streaming images were not shown correctly, they appeared as a black box. However, when I tried to upgrade from the bad account (first uninstall and then reinstall IE7.0 from the same CD), I got an error message that installation could not be completed. Microsoft put IE 6 pack and created a link called "Internet Explorer Troubleshooting" on my desktop. When I double clicked on the link, it gave me a warning "http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?=linkid=63939. This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the folder option control panel". I have no idea what program to associate it with. Please help.

Also it is very puzzling for me, since I used the same file IE7-WindowsXP-x86-enu.exe for IE 7 installation, how come the computer could successfully read linkid=63939 in one case but not the other?

A:Solved: Windows Update shows a blank screen in IE6

I did not realized that this problem of not being able to view the Windows Update webpage was due to corrupted WinXP system files, which was repaired by Windows File Protection, by running "sfc /scannow" at the command line.

Thanks to the helpful suggestions I received from members of this Forum, especially MCSA and Bernardus, and ozrom1e, from Start->run-> I typed "sfc /scannow" (without using the Restoration CD), and in just 5 minutes, all my problems are solved. System Restore works, all my user accounts are good, Windows Update screen comes out nicely in all of them, I can upgrade to IE 7, the streaming images are displayed nicely, and I can print webpages and Eudora emails from any user accounts. It is simply great!!! I do not need to reformat my hard drive. I do not need to reinstall WinXP or any software programs on my computer. "sfc /scannow" works like magic, it repaired my corrupted Win XP system files in a flash!!!

PS. In order to avoid the use of Restoration CD for "sfc /scannow" repair, I followed the instruction on http://www.updatexp.com\scannow-sfc.html.
I navigated to the location in my registry to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSFT\Windows\CurrentVersion\SetUp
and set SourcePath (in the right panel) to C:\, since I have the folder i386 in my C drive.

Can you do the following?

How to find and post your Minidump Files:

My Computer > C Drive > Windows Folder > Minidump Folder > Minidump Files.

It is these files that we need (not the folder). Attach to your next post the five most recent dumps. Notice the Manage Attachments button at the bottom when you go to post the next time. You can Zip up to five files per Zip; if you only have one or two you don?t need to zip them, just attach as is. Please do us a favor and don?t Zip each one individually.

Hi i have a Toshiba Satellite laptop with windows vista and when i try to start it up it goes to a blank screen with a funny symbol (ascii 187 box building character?) and a cursor that is flashing (like an underscore). When i try to push any buttons it beeps. I may have stopped the computer in the middle of a system restore (i wasn't sure what it was doing) :s Is there any way to save it?

P.S. I've already tried:

Take out the battery and hold the power button for 60 seconds.

Press f8 (nothing)

Press f12 (it went to a boot menu with options 1. HDD 2. FDD 3. CD/DVD 4. LAN and 5. USB Memory, but when i tried to choose an option it went to the same blank screen with the funny symbol)

Thank you so much.

A:computer shows blank screen with funny symbol and cursor

Are you sure you're pressing F8 at the correct point in the boot process? It needs to be pressed and held down at the Toshiba splash screen until the "Advanced Startup Options" appears, then choose "Last known good configuration" and press <Enter>.

This one truly has me confused. I started one of my computers and it started as normal I saw the Windows logo with the bar scrolling beneath it and the next thing I know I have a black screen with the cursor on it. I am able to move the cursor but can see nothing else. I have tried putting in a new video card in and am still getting the same problem. I have tried rebooting the computer in safe mode but it also does not give me a screen now safe mode does display drivers before showing blank screen with cursor. Any Suggestions on how to correct this?

Try wiping the HD: SSD - HDD Optimize for Windows Reinstallation

If there are errors on this operation then immediately test the HD with maker's HD Diagnosticextended CD scan.

Reset the CMOS: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS to Optimal Defaults.

While in BIOS setup set SATA controller to AHCI mode, with DVD drive set to boot first.

WHere did you get Win7? If downloaded, confirm ISO integrity or download another. Burn to DVD using ImgBurn at 4x speed, or write to flash stick using Universal USB Installer with Win7 in dropdown menu. Boot stick under USB, Removable or HD's.
