Q: Solved: windows vista giving me some problems. Pls help

I purchased a compaq presario c700 last year with windows vista pre-installed. Having realised that it is incompartible with alot of the application programs I'd like to use, I decided to partition the hard drive and instal windows xp also on the pc. But anytime I try the xp installer gives the message 'No hardrive detected'. What could be the cause?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I just installed a new Seagate hard drive for my Gateway GT5620 desktop and I am having nothing but problems with getting all of my updates installed. Windows update states I have installed 99 but there is still more and I cannot update anymore. System gives me BSOD sometimes and other times Vista just tells me that update could not be installed. I have tried to follow what microsoft states to do but everything fails. Get classic update could not be installed. I would like to get this system stable again I would love to donate this system to a family who really needs a computer for their kids going to school. Not sure what info you need to help but I have tried to run the log reports and if there is anything else let me know.

I have gone to Intel web site to download their driver scan and update tool but it would not download either.

I am trying to upgrade a number of VB3-generation projects to VB6. No .dlls are called in the code (that I write in the forms) but, obviously, some dlls are called when compiling and when generating distribution packages (e.g. COMCAT.dll or MFC40.dll). When the Setup routine runs, my XP laptop sees the 1998 version of the files trying to replace the 2004 versions in WINDOWS/System32 and won't let me continue (rightly so). I assume that these files were incorporated as calls from some (unknown which) of the controls placed on the VB3 forms.

Is there any way to either get around this . . . other than by recreating each of the forms using the VB6 platform? or ???

Ultimately, I want the projects (engineering number-crunchers) to be distributed in a CD on an engineering text I am close to publishing so I want them to run on (at least) XP and Windows 7 platforms.

Ever since I installed Windows 7 and IE 9 my computer has been giving me fits. Pages and games load extremely slow and I have to refresh constantly. Windows live mail is a nightmare as it takes over 2 minutes to load an email just so that I can delete it. Can I uninstall IE 9 without causing any problems on my computer? And will it revert back to IE 8? I'm thinking that IE 9 is what is giving me such problems and I have heard that it causes a lot of problems with other programs and games. I scan and defrag all the time so I know that isn't my problem with too much junk on the computer. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello all,

I used to use incredimail until I got a new computer with Vista on it. I installed incredimail, and used it (kind of) until I found out it wasn't compatible with Vista, and then uninstalled. I switched over to Windows Mail and have a question.

First off, I HATE IT. I know im a nerd, but I love all the little icons and themes that incredimail has...and windows mail appears to have none of. Well...to the question...

I set up my account, and email works just fine, but there is a problem with attachments. I can receive (for instance) a pdf and save it to my computer. If I open it from its saved location, it opens up perfectly. If I click on the attachment in my email and try to open it that way, I get an error that states something like "there is no file extension set for that file. Please go into control panel and set one."

I know there is a file extension set, because I went into control panel and checked, but it has the acrobat reader icon for the file, and I can open it pefectly if it is saved to my desktop.

Does anyone have an idea why I can open the pdf files perfectly as long as it is saved to the computer, but if I try to open it from Windows Mail, it gives me that file extension error?

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

A:Windows Mail is giving me problems

It has something to do with Vista's tight security. With XP, I can open PDF files either way.

I recently noticed that the system was trying to do 7 updates every day at closedown, and found that update was giving a return code of 800736b3.

I have run SURT several times, and it doesn't seem to give any results (or should I be looking somewhere else?).

I ran sfc /scannow and extracted the results and they are in sfcdetails.txt (attached). SFC said there were some files it couldn't fix, even though sfcdetails.txt says it has fixed all of them.

CBS.zip is much too big to upload using the paperclip - is there another way?

I tried restoring to an earlier restore point, and unfortunately all the attempted updates have flushed my list of restore points - and the oldest few all give me a return code of x00000022.

Not sure if this is one problem or two...! I am reluctant to do a System Recovery as it sounds pretty drastic - help would be much appreciated!

PS Is any more info required?

I attempted to install the Netflix application on my Windows 8 laptop, and it told me there was an issue with the firewall.
It gave me the Error Code 5, so I fixed it with this video. The instructions within got rid of the Error 5; however, I'm now getting the following message when I attempt to start the firewall from "Services."

There reason I'm trying to start it from Services is because when I try to start the Firewall and "Use recommended settings" from settings page, it displays this, and loads for a second, and then doesn't do anything.

Also, I'm not sure if this is relevant or not, but when I try to start Windows Defender, it shows this.

I was like, really excited to get it, then it started giving me problems. ._.

Yesterday, the night I got it, I was playing The Sims 3, and I found that I just couldn't type a thing. Not a thing. I typed things into the box, nothing came out. Thank God for the randomize name feature or I wouldn't have been able to name my Sims. Clicking was okay, and I restarted, haven't had this problem since.

Then about 15 minutes ago, I was happily playing The Sims 3 again, and browsing the web on Firefox, when suddenly my cursor froze. I looked down, and the red light was on. I tried using the arrow keys to scroll down the page, but it gave me a beep. I restarted and it worked fine again.

Five minutes later, the same thing happened, only that I could use my arrow keys to scroll, not like the first time.

Also, one more thing. When I refresh the page in any browser, it sends me straight back to my home page (Google). Is this a feature of Windows 7, or a bug? I'm not really sure since I've been using XP all along. Help please?

I just spent the last 4 days reformatting my previously-XP computer, installing Windows 7, and setting up all my programs just the way I like them, installing new drivers for the move to Win7, dealing with new problems of moving onto Win7, and so forth. The OS acted like an angel for the first 2-3 days, and now, suddenly, it's acting like a moron.

The '3 Stooges' of problems I'm experiencing very often while it's running is that it often likes to go slow/freeze/(Not Responding)/white window, or give me a totally black screen with just the mouse pointer, or it shows me nothing but the desktop background and the mouse pointer.

As for rebooting issues, I've seen it reboot my computer on its own before, as well as being unable to boot all the way to the OS.

Last night I did a fresh Win7 "Upgrade" Repair Install, though it didn't fix these issues.

I have no idea why it acted so nice the first 2 days, not to mention those were the most intensive days, when I pushed it to its limits installing programs and drivers. Now that I've finally settled in and began my more casual work, it's acting like it has no power whatsoever. This is not the best time to act this way, after all the time and effort I put into installing and setting up everything I use. How can I whip it into shape and move on with my life, withOUT going back to XP? (as I read online that you must reformat to go from Win7 to XP, which would undo 3 days of effort)

Hello all, I recently tried installing the latest updates from Microsoft and right afterwards my computer started acting strange. For instance, I couldn't seem to connect to the internet. I tried to do an uninstall one by one but, that looked like it was going to take a while so I rolled back to the day before with System Restore.
Right now I have re-downloaded the updates and I guess I'll try them one by one and see which one causes the problem. I was wondering if anyone else was having any trouble or is it just something with my computer only? I use Windows XP, Zone Alarm, AVG antivirus. Thanks,Toni.

Just about some days ago, i decided to install TortoiseSvN on my Windows 7 RC 1 computer to upload to a project i am developing in on SourceForge.Net - which was a mistake (although, other users have had no problems with it). After installation, i required to restart, so i did. After that, Windows complained telling me that there were corrupt files, so i ran "chkdsk /f" and restarted. It completed quickly. I restarted AGAIN and ran the program i just installed, uh-oh, an error message appears stating: "The program can't start because MSVCR90.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.".

I googled and even binged to no avail! One Google result (there weren't that many) was relating to WinInet, a programming resource, from an MSDN post and stated that you just needed to clear the manifest (whatever that was, no idea), so thinking it was something to do with the registry or some backup file i downloaded, installed and ran CCleaner. Hey all,

I'm having some trouble with uninstalling programs on Vista - when I run a program's uninstaller from either Programs & Features or directly, no wizard appears and the uninstall doesn't take place.

A brief look at task manager shows that the process is running (but nothing shows under the 'applications' tab), and a few days' googling hasn't come up with anything useful.

Does anyone have any idea what might cause this and how to fix it?

Happy to provide any specs or details needed.

Thanks a lot!

I just recently bought a computer off my brother and he was running windows vista 32 bit, he told me the computer would run alot better if I was using windows 7 64 bit so I went ahead got that.

I installed windows 7 and it ran fine for the entire night I was on it, no problems at all just updating drivers installing games etc. I got off the computer (never shut it off) and when I came back the computer was asleep I moved the mouse and the computer came back on but the monitor was blacked out. I tried restarting, repairing and nothing.

The monitor is a HP w2338H 23 inch widescreen the computer is a 710 dell would there be any conflict between these 2? Also I formatted my harddrive after this all happened and decided to restart i can install and run vista fine but now when I go to upgrade to windows 7 64 bit it does the installation and when it gets to the point where it has to "windows has to restart to continue" point it restarts but goes to that same screen where its blacked out but the monitor is on.

Any help would be great I'm completely stumped at this point if you got any questions about the computer just ask ill be watching this post all day while i try to figure this out

Thanks in advance.

Windows Vista appears to have lost its extension information on the MP3 file type.

The problem occurs in Internet Explorer when saving a .mp3 file from any website. The Save As dialog interprets the .mp3 as a Movie Clip, .mpeg, and proceeds to save and download the file as it would any other .mpeg file. What could be causing this strange file type association in Windows Vista and Internet Explorer 7? I am on Windows Vista Home Premium.

The problem continues throughout Windows Vista and Windows Explorer. When I edited the program association of .mp3 and set it to play in Windows Media Player, the description for the file read, "File: Windows Media Player file" rather than, "File: MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3" or whatever it should read normally. This leads me to suspect that a program botched the file type information on .mp3.

Does anyone have any idea how this problem might be resolved? I have tried changing .mp3 to open in various media players, but the problem appears to be with the code behind file type rather than the programs opening it; furthermore, .mp3 files play fine across all media players without any trouble.

I bought a new laptop 3 years ago when Vista first arrived. I had a number of difficult issues with program compatibility (printer, sound drivers camera programs etc.) and was always searching for drivers to download and had issues with the Windows dirvers. I even had a difficult time getting SP1 to install. (finally had to remove sound drivers that conflicted to get SP1 in and then reinstall them).

I plan to buy a new laptop next year with Windows 7 as mine is slowing down and no room for more Ram I also wanted to wait until after Windows 7 SP1. Meanwhile I just bought a new Cannon Camera (CD says XP and Vista only) and a new printer and I may need some other software.

My question is, am I setting myself up now for big problems later when I buy a Windows 7 Notebook if I am buying things now that do not show Windows 7 ready yet? Will it be all the Vista problems all over again or with Windows 7 is it much easier and smoother to update and run Vista approved software? I even wonder if I should return my camera and wait until the camera's Windows 7 version is out...
Thank you,

After a cleaning out a friends garage, we've come across an old windows vista laptop that used to belong to her, unfortunately she cannot remember the password to log in. We don't have a password reset disk or the original windows disc and after looking on other forums I've tried starting it in safe mode and logging on as an administrator but the administrator account doesn't appear. I've heard that there is software than you can download, can anybody recommend any or have any other ideas as to how we can get into this laptop, thanks :)

I'm giving a my old laptop to my friend but first I want to reinstall Windows XP so all my data will be wiped.

I bought the laptop used, so it didn't come with an OS DVD. I searched through my stuff and managed to find the Operating System DVD for my old computer which the disc to install Windows XP Media Center 2005.

So can I install this OS on the laptop? And if I do, does that mean all of my data will be gone (which is my goal)?

A:[SOLVED] Giving Dell Laptop to friend, question about reinstalling Windows XP Media C

Technically, if it's an OEM disk then, no, you can't install it. If it's a full (or upgrade) version then you should be fine providing it is not installed on any other machine. If you don't care whether it has an OS installed or not then boot from the CD (DVD?) that you have and allow the setup to proceed as far as the disk formatting section. Allow it to format and then cancel the install. Nice clean disk that only a forensic expert would be able to reconstruct any data that was there.

Recently my computer is completely messed up. Windows Update won't update and I continually get an erro "80072FFE". My anti-virus software also won't update. I get internet popups that open a search window with gibberish in the search area and I have never gotten any popups before. My computer constantly popups windows explorer saying "Windows Host Process has stopped working" or "IP Host process has stopped working". Every time I look at the details of these errors it points to svchost.exe but I have searched for solutions on this issues to no avail. I also cannot reach help sites or update sites and have to write this thread on safe mode in order to post it. Please Help!!!

P.S the gmer file attached is just the initial scan because everytime I tried a full scan it shut down my computer. I can try it in safe mode if that would help just please let me know.

Hey I was just wondering if there was any decent tools I could use to switch the look and feel of vista. Much like styleXP did with XP. I did a bit of searching, nothing too extensive, but I thought I'd come here and see if by chance anyone had a program they could recommend.

Hi Hydria,

Stardock makes some great programs to customize Vista with. Most of them have a trial period to try them out to see how you like them.

I'm running Vista Ultimate 64-bit. I'm trying to run 4gb corsair dominator(4x 1gb dimms) and, I can run 2gb perfectly, no issues. It doesn't seem to matter much at all which 2 dimms I use. It posts everytime, no matter the configuration (except when I don't have 1 dimm in for each cpu.). Booting into Vista seems to be the only problem. I went through 17, that's right, 17 passes of memtest 1.70, and found no issues with the RAM itself. I can get 3/4 gigs to boot ONCE. If I boot with 2gb, then shutdown, put 3/4 in, and reboot, it will boot. However, when I restart it gives me the stop error again, no matter how many times I restart from there it gives me the error until I go back to the 2gb config. I was thinkig it might be the mobo, but it has no issues whatsoever testing/reading the 4gb config in BIOS or memtest. Even when I get it to boot, windows recognizes all 4gb and acts as if everything is grand. Is there something I need to do while booted with all 4 to get it to like it? Any help would be appreciated, this one is a real head scratcher...

Hi, i have some problem with my IE 7 recently.
When i surf some sites, mostly hotmail. I always get the message "object moved here". So when i click on a page, it will direct me to a page that writes "object moved here" and then i'll need to click on the word "here" before i can access my page.

Recently, i cant seem to see all the images and yes, i can't see all the smilies and icons on the post thread now, which is wierd and i get this message when i'm surfing the net at times:

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

Most likely causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address

which i find it wierd because my messenger is still able to connect and my brother's computer which uses the same connection is also able to connect but my internet just doesn't seem to be able display the webpage.

hope to hear from you soon.

A:IE 7 giving problems

Hi bearbear,

please try running IE7 without addons to see if the same happens:

- Click Start -> Run -> type:
iexplore -extoff
- Click OK
- Test with a few sites to see it the same problem occurs...please bear in mind that when you run IE with no addons, some website will cease to work as normal if they depend on certain addons. Ignore any new problems, just try to concentrate on the original issue and post back your findings please.

If that doesn't give any results, it may be an idea to temporary disable your firewall for a little bit and run IE in its normal mode. Some firewalls include features which affect how webpages load and are displayed so it could be a configuration problem. Remember to re-enable your firewall when you have finished testing.

Have you previously upgraded from IE6 to version 7? If yes, did these problem used to happen previously?

what you mean you can not see?
can you ping the other pc?

if you type "\\[computername]" (or ip) does it work?

Let me start off by giving the specs of my machine. It's a Gateway FX that I bought from Newegg this past June and below is a screenshot of the specs. And here is the Newegg Link to the computer so you can see more specs.

I'm having a lot of problems with my Vista right now and was wondering if someone here might be able to help me solve my problems. Let me give you a quick run down of what's been happening. About a week ago, I went to bed and put my computer in the low-power state (see below).

I usually do this at night because I hadn't thought it would be a problem. I had two programs up and running when I did this - Firefox (version 3.5.3) and Microsoft Word 2007. The Word document was just blank and I left this up often because with my new computer it only came with a trial version of Microsoft Office and I didn't want to keep wasting my trial usages each time I needed to open it. Either way, I woke up the next morning and my computer had shut down. I didn't really think anything of it. I figured maybe updates had been done and it had shut off or something (there was no power outage). I turned on my computer for the day and that is when my problems began.

I opened up Firefox and was just checking my gmail and such when Firefox closed. I didn't think anything of it and opened it back up again. It closed shortly thereafter again and I thought something might be up. I ran CCleaner and Spybot - Search and Destroy and SB-S&D didn't find anything and CCleaner... Read more

I'm a gamer and a major 'net addict, but when it comes to the inner workings of my beloved hardware, I don't have a clue in hell. I'm not a complete dimwit, but expansive responses would be much appreciated.

I've had this PC for about a year now and ever since I first had it it's been giving me nightmares. It started with small browser crashes from watching Youtube vids to full BSOD'ing from gaming and the like. I ignored the BSODs for a long while and after a handful of months the problem got out of hand. My PC wouldn't crash if I kept it on or turned it on everyday as if it'd remain alive if it were "warmed up". I went away on vacation for two months - meaning I turned it off - came back, but it was stuck in a permanent BSOD loop and I was unable to boot from anything, anywhere, anyhow. After two weeks of incessant attempts, I finally got it back to its desktop, and can not continuously turn it on with an 80% success rate without BSODs. I have googled to hell and back on this one and came to the slightly unsure conclusion it was from incompatible drivers. But now I feel my PC is corrupted in some sense from the 400+ BSODs it's gone through. The internet no longer works on it, it's very sensitive to just about anything - file opening, moving the cursor, etc. I turn it on everyday but it's incapable of doing anything, and that includes reformatting with XP which I have tried desperately so very many times.... A:Vista giving me a real hard time please help!!!!

Have you installed the latest chipset drivers and BIOS for your motherboard yet? This can sometime cause problems like this.

Is your power supply powerful enough to handle the load of your computer? Usually 500 to 600 watts is good.

Double check to see if the computer may be overheating? Usually by leaving the side of the case open temporarily as a test for maximum airflow. Clean and blow out any dust and cobwebs found.

Hope this helps,
