I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am aware of 2 main types of memory. SODIMM with 4 chips a side and 8 chips on a side. My old T500 is more sensitive to memory and it cannot use 4 chip per side DDR3 memory. My X220 is more recent but I stick to 8 chip memory mainly as if I upgrade I can toss the memory down the food chain. So can the X220 use 4 chip memory?

Hello,

I recently had issues with my PSU and rather than play guesswork on whether its still functional, I rather just replace it.

My motherboard is a m3n78-pro. Its a bit dated but I'd like for this pc to last another 6 months before I build an entirely new rig. If I read the manual correctly, it requires ATX 12V V2.0.

The PSU I'd like to change to (since it just has to last another 6 months) this 900 w PSU. Would the m3n78-pro be compatible with this PSU? One concern I had was that the m3n78-pro requires a 4 pin ATX +12v connector. If I read the PSU's specifications correctly it has one 12V 8-pin (4 + 4) CPU power connector. Is that 8-pin two separate power connector, ie do I just use 1 of the connectors to fit into the 4 pin ATX +12v connector?

Please excuse my noobishness but what exactly does the v2.92 Motherboard specification entail? I tried to google it, but got less useful information and product results from newegg.

Also I read the wiki on the ATX 12V V2.X standard, but it didn't answer my question - is ATX12V v2.3 backwards compatible with the ATX12V v2.0 standard?
Thank you very much for any help you can give.

Hi,I've got ENVY dv7-7255dx laptop from 2012 and I just wanted to know:- will it handle 16GB RAM? How fast RAM can I use- I want to add SSD and make it primary drive (and still keep current one for data) - will 240GB SSD (e.g. GoodRam Iridium Pro 240GB (SSDPR-IRIDPRO-240) be compatible?- can you please send me name or example model of SATA cable compatible with my laptop and mentioned above drive? It looks as it requires round cable - correct?- is drive mounting cage specific or can I buy any? Thank you in advance for any help. Regards,Gregory Malinowski

We do not see that brand of SSD over here in the US but as it is a 2.5 inch wide 7 mm thick SATA SSD it is virtually certain to work.  Yes you can install 16 gigs of RAM.  Service Manual DDR3-1600-MHz dual channel support Supports up to 16384-MB system RAM Memory modules (2, PC3, 12800, 1600-MHz): 8-GB memory module 670034-001 https://www.amazon.com/Kingston-PC3-12800-Notebooks-KTH-X3C-8G/dp/B0089MTP0W/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1487796713&sr=8-2&keywords=670034-001 This is DDR3-1600 1.5 volt memory. The Kingston linked above will work.  Here is a link to the SATA cable and caddy for your laptop to use in the second bay: https://www.newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_5&products_id=579&zenid=460053086b75bf15cd31e58e026a8e7d These are specific items and need to be designed for your specific model as there are mounting flanges and attachment  points that have to engage to hold the drive from moving inside the laptop.  I sense you are not in the US. If you have trouble finding any of this let us know but all can likely be found on eBay in Europe. If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

Hi!So my monitor was fine all these times and all of a sudden it started to flicker. The only thing I can remember is the battery died so this sudden symptom kind of boggles me.  Please bear with me as I try to explain the problem. So the monitor blinks on and off and I can see what is on the screen before it turns off then back on again. It does the same thing in BIOS, Windows (hd1) and RHEL (hd2). I see the keyboard power led green link blink randomly on and off, the caps lock light won't turn on when I push it and also if I try to logon or type, there is a delayed response and sometimes it doesn't recognize what I pushed whether in terminal or BIOS. I tried these things to try and narrow down the problem: 1. I reseated the lcd video connector.2. I reseted the keyboard.3. I tried another lenovo keyboard.4. With the lcd plugged in still, and I try to attach and external monitor on vga/DP, the external would never show anything. You can see it recognized the signal but before it showed anything it would go to sleep. The laptop lcd would not show anything with an external plugged.5. I removed the laptop lcd and plugged in an external monitor. It doesn't flicker anymore in bios, but there is a delay in what I type on the lenovo keyboard and sometimes it doesn't recognize key presses. When I load windows the external montior goes to sleep and the keyboard power led blinks on and off and I can hear the fan turn on and off constantly. When I load RHEL, it ... Read more

I have been questioining the Sandy Bridge QM67 chipset with my X220 out of concern that I have a possible problen with the machine. The QM67 has 2 SATA III ports and 4 SATA II ports. The hard disk bay has one of the SATA III ports which is where I installed a SSD to improve performane.  The SDXC card reader is SATA connected but I am not sure which port on the QM67 it is wired up to? The Wi-Fi card I suspect is PCI Express 2.0 x1 connected so its not affected? The other slot is mSATA which I discovered a SSD option but with slower SATA II speed. Now noticed there is a bay for a SIM card, so is the WAN card PCI Express connected?

Hi, I am currently trying to figure out what's the best way to charge my X220 in my car. Basically, I see two possibilites:- Use a DC AC Power Inverter and plug in my geniuine 230V chager into the inverter   - There are different inverters, does it work with a modified sine wave inverter or do I need a pure sine wave inverter?- Use a DC DC charger   - I could only find these cheap chinese chargers and I am bit concerned they might fry my X220   - I've seen the Lenovo Combo Charger, however it is not really available in Australia, it might be possible to get a used one sent from the US or Europe, but might take a while and will cost a lot Anyone has experience with either of the solutions and can recoomend something? Maybe there is even a 3rd solution? Cheers,Robin

Hello all, my first post here, a new proud owner of X220. I beefed it up a bit by adding an mSata SSD 120GB for programs and a 750GB hard drive and 4GB of memory to total 8GB, running windows 7 64bit. I downloaded the lenovo program for driver detection tc for X220, including bios and everything went fine and resulted in higher performance overall. Also using the detection program by Lenovo it installed a bunch of other Lenovo programs like Vantage password, Community, ultranav utility etc...are those necessary or can i uninstall some? What I was wondering is if there is some tweaking options for X220 for its own software, not for windows. thanks for any tips on my "new" used pc

Hello. I took apart my X220 but forgot to put the DC jack back in. I couldn't find it anywhere (very likely due to cats), so I ordered a new one off of amazon (this one). The new one only came with the jack and cord, but not the little metal plate (also lost) that holds it in place. After I put that in the computer, I plugged it in, but I saw some sparks and quickly pulled it out. So, I'm thinking the part was probably bad, but I figured I'd inquire about another possibility that occurred to me:Does the metal plate do any grounding? Or is it just there to secure the part in place? I'm about to order this one from ebay. This time I looked up the part number and it's a match. I just wanted to make sure that it will be safe to install without the metal plate. Thank you.

A:My X220 is really overheating Please Help!

Welcome to the forum!

Difficult to say why after a repasting the temps are that high, let's give a look at a checkist I personally follow when repasting my ThinkPads:

Was the old paste properly cleaned from both heastink and CPU die? (Use 100% alcohol or Isopropyl for that)
Are the fan blades clean? First block the fan to prevent it from spinning and apply compressed air from the heatsink and from the top of the blades until you're sure is clean
Apply a very small amount of paste and distribute a very thin layer over the CPU
Is the heatsink sitting flat on the CPU?
Make sure to properly tight the screws
Do the heatpipes look bent or damaged?

I have no experience with the thermal compound you used, I normally use Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut and my X220's don't overheat, when your temps get to 99°C, what applications are you using?

Hi guys, I am looking for a bit of advice. I just purchased a used Lenovo x220 i5, 8GB RAM, 300GB HDD, with BIOS 1.25. And most likely getting another X220 unit as a standby unit. I am thinking of upgrading the x220 in this order:1) RAM-16GB RAM (1866 Mhz , e.g. Kingston HyperX Impact Black Series - DDR3L - 16 Gt : 2 x 8 Gt - SO-DIMM 204-pin - 1866 MHz PC3L-14900 - CL11 - 1.35 / 1.5 V - non-ECC)2) System & Storage (mSATA 240 GB+  orginal HDD vs  SSD 500GB)3) Display-IPS display My first thoughts are in 2) System & Storage (mSATA 240 GB+  original HDD vs  SSD 500GB)Option A) install a 2 Samsung 850 EVO SSD 250 GB mSATA and keep the old HDD for data storage.Possible concern: will lower speed of mSATA drive with SATA II speed become a bottleneck in the near future?Possible upside: while I have a lot of small files to be stored, would the system perform better if the data storage is physically separated from system files on another driveOption B) replace the HDD with Samsung 850 EVO SSD 500 GB and possibly later add a mSATA for data storage. Hereby take advantage of full SATAIII speed.Possible concern: will the data consisting of lots of small files slow down the laptop while having the system files on the same physical drive? And all on 1 single partition as recommended for SSD?s.The difference in price between option A and B is not significant so that is not an issue for me. alankoh, unfortunately, if you haven't recovery media with WinPE environment (didn't make it from Rescue&Recovery tool) you can't recover laptop by simple step. Or you have to have Factory_Recovery media. Also, partition Lenovo_Recovery must be Q;.Nevertheless, you can do it:1. find out imagex.exe tool on other Lenovo laptop, within "C:\Program Files (x86)\Lenovo\Factory Recovery" folder or in MS Windows AIK2. make usb bootable media with Windows 7 environment (WinPE as an example), copy imagex.exe on that media3. boot from new media, in cmd line (re)assign partitions as follow:system_drv as S;, Windows_OS as C;, Lenovo_Recovery as Q:4. type and execute the following string from cmd line:imagex.exe /apply /verify Q:\factoryrecovery\Cdrivebackup.wim 1 C:\You'll get partition C: as from the factory. Also you can restore hidden partition system_drv:imagex.exe /apply /verify Q:\factoryrecovery\Sdrivebackup.wim 1 S:\5. boot laptop as usually, Install Lenovo Rescue&Recovery tool

Good day.

Pretty much all of the steps are outlined in the HMM: https://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/0a60739_04.pdf

Essentially, you'll need to remove the LCD, pull the hinge screws, carefully lift the antennae tapes, and then reinstall all the parts into the replacement lid. Section 2010 is a good starting point.

A:Replacing DVD with SSD on X220

Upgrading your system from HDD to SSD is doable and would have an immediate impact, less heat, less noise, fast bootup times, overall one of the best and easiest upgrades - next to adding more RAM, which you might consider. Don't forget you will either need to clone your existing HDD to your new SSD or install the OS fresh, including all your drivers, apps, etc. Make sure you have everything you need before you go erasing your HDD's data - BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP. Youtube is your friend here, there are numerous videos on how to accomplish the upgrade. Now, it may be possible to remove your DVD drive and swap in a second drive (HDD), but this is a very complicated task and requires technical skills you may not have. I would watch a few Youtube videos first and make a determination if you can do it, including, does your system have the needed interface that will allow for a 2.5" SATA HDD, and what about the space itself. Don't forget you will want to seal the opening, can you remove the bezel from the DVD drive, maybe customize a cable. Do you feel comfortable taking your laptop fully apart -- everything, if it's required? Can you put it back together and not have extra parts? Some of the hardware is delicate, and small, screws can get lost in your carpet when dropped on the floor! If more storage is what you need maybe an external drive would work better. Using a USB to SATA cable plugged into an HDD, or external enclosure may be a better option??? IIRC 2.5" drives... Read more

Hi, can I use eDrive on my ThinkPad X220? I confirmed that it has TPM v1.2, but apparently it also needs UEFI Version 2.3.1 (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh831627.aspx). My reported "UEFI BIOS Version" is 1.39. Are these numbers comparable (one is Lenovo-specific, one is not, I guess), so that eDrive is not possible on my device? Or how can I find out, which UEFI Version the Lenovo "UEFI BIOS" is based on? And do Opal drives even work on the mSATA slot? I also found this:http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/win8beta_8det8059.txtThe version number is not even close to 2.x and yet it supports eDrive? Can I use eDrive on my ThinkPad X220?Yes. I use a Crucial MX100 SATA SSD with X220 BIOS 1.29a and eDrive hardware encryption is fully supported in Windows 8.1. Are these numbers comparable? No. How can I find out, which UEFI Version the Lenovo "UEFI BIOS" is based on?This question has been asked several times over the years and so far nobody has offered an answer. And do Opal drives even work on the mSATA slot?I would expect so. The version number is not even close to 2.x and yet it supports eDrive?Correct. As mentioned in the description 1.29a was for beta program support. Features added were for testing and not guaranteed to be supported in subsequent BIOS releases. Could I switch to this BIOS version and use it?Yes, just downgrade to it. Or does 1.39 include the changes of 1.29a, anyway? Not according to the changelog, but as you are already on 1.39, try it for yourself before downgrading to 1.29a. 1.29a works for me so I have no reason to upgrade.

But is it worth the effort with this laptop? Also, please notice that my hardware knowledge is weak, though if necessary I will be able to learn how to change RAM, harddisk etc. very quickly. I have been looking at several system monitoring softwares; either they do not provide with enough information, or they are too detailed and advanced for me to understand. So I have not been able to troubleshoot properly. Some info:Processor: Intel® Core? i5-2520M CPU @ 2.50GHz × 4Graphics: Intel® Sandybridge MobileOS: Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS 64-bitHDD: 250 GB (I don't know any more details about the harddisk)Please tell me if you need more info. I have cleaned it from unessecary files and programs. I will use it mainly for running Matlab and for data analysis in ROOT.My first thought was to change RAM and also the harddisk, maybe get a SSD. But will it fix the problem entirely? (also the temperature problem?) Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I should approach these problems?Any help is much appreciated!! /EUY

Yesterday updated from Win7Pro to Win10Pro.At the end I was presented with a black screen and the Lenovo Center opened. All the tests was passed.I closed it and no desktop was available. A few reboot and the situation is I can login but after that no desktop is shown only a white small rectangle saying "Personalized settings. (Not responding)". Trying to do anything I'm told Windows Explorer is not responding. Any suggestions how to proceed is welcomed since is my work laptop and is not usable.

Hello, A few weeks ago i purchased a used SSD from a site similar to ebay hoping to make my X220 a bit happyer, i was told the SSD was in full working condition. Upon inserting it in the laptop it is telling me that it is encrypted with Opal. The SSD i am talking about is a Samsung SSD Model: MZ-5PA2560/0D7. I tried contacting Samsung to get some assistance in wiping the drive clean as i am not interested in any way of the data that was/is on the drive as it does not belong to me. Unfortunately Samsung is telling me that this is an OEM SSD used in Lenovo or Dell so they cannot help me in any way and i must get in touch with Lenovo, so here i am  Is there any way to wipe this drive so i can use it? I am not interested in any way in the data it currently holds. I just want to wipe it clean so it will be usable again. I saw on the web that there are a few methods of wiping it but they all require PSID, this drive does not have a PSID written anywhere on the label. I also tried to contact the seller to provide me with the password or return my money but no luck in getting an answer back. So if anyone has any ideas i am willing to try. Thank you,

Greetings everyone, I currently have a Lenovo Thinkpad W541 as my main powerhouse driver that I use for Computer Science related work (School and Work). It's an awesome machine, and I love it, I have 28 gb of RAM in it. I will continue to use it daily without a doubt, but I did not want to continue taking it with me everywhere, so I went on eBay and ordered a refurbed (but super condition) Thinkpad X220 for less than $100. It comes with a 300gb hard drive which I won't replace because as aforementioned my Thinkpad W541 is my main baby. However, it only has 4gb of RAM. I want to max it out to 16gb once I receive it sometime this week. I read elsewhere on forums that X220's do allow 16gb of RAM. Another question is does it matter what kind RAM from a speed perspective I purchase? Thanks!

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I came across a statement that the x220's mSATA was SATA II, and not III. I have been looking for definitive proof that this is the case, such as Lenovo documentation, however I haven't come across any. Lenovo's "Detailed specifications" simple state that the x220 has an mSATA slot, not its specs. Does someone here have a link to something other than hearsay that states the specs of the x220's mSATA slot?

A:x220 msata is SATA II?

HelloThe proof is x220 schematic. In general, x220's chipset QM67 has 2 SATA III channels. One of them is routed to the primary HDD slot, another one to the docking port. So, mSATA slot matches SATA II specification.

Hi there,I have a problem with Lenovo ThinkPad X220.I'll try to explain it acurately as possible. The sound of the laptop stutters at unpredictable intervals. No matter the source of the audio: YouTube, video player, mp3 music...Sometimes the laptop work without any stuttering problem (rarely), but if after boot it start to make the annoying glitch, it will do it all the time. Often the intervals are very close (1/2 sec. of stuttering in 3 ot 5 sec. interval), or the interval is longer (stutters in aroud 10 sec.), but as i said earlier, the intervals are not identical. It has no dependence with the system load, power plan or power source. I'll capture it on video next time to show You exactly. This behavior is monitored on three X220's, two of them are with installed Windows 7 64-bit, and the third is with Windows 10. Also one of those with Windows 7 is also with SSD.All of them are bought from Microsoft Registered Refurbisher, and are barley used. All drivers are installed.ThinkVantage Access Connections is installed. The BIOS is updated to the latest version. The Laptop passes all Lenovo Diagnostics tests. The Windows Updates are installed. latest tests: The stuttering occures mainly (if not only) while the laptop is connected to wireless network. When I turn off the 802.11 Wireless Radio from the Fn+F5 keyboard combo, there is no stuttering. The adapter is: 1x1 11b/g/n Wireless LAN PCI Express Half Mini Card Adapter I'll try to replace the network card, but... Sorry for the reply, but i could not edit the post.Just wanted to share the results with everybody. The problem was caused from the WLAN card. After replacing the 1x1 11b/g/n Wireless LAN PCI Express Half Mini Card Adapter with Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 AGN, there is no problems

Even cranked all the way up, the sound on the x220 seems somewhere around half as loud as the x120e and even my wife's iPad blows it away.  It's a litle embarrassing. I think it's the sound card/driver not the speakers as even with headphones plugged in it is very very soft at 100% volume.

I've replaced my X220 IPS screen twice. They've failed with a bad/noisy column near the center of the screen, always in the same place. As of today the latest replacement failed in the same way. The first two times, it was always a few months after being crawled on by a toddler so I blamed it on that. But this last time nothing like that happened, so I'm thinking there's a bad design... lcd case not being stiff enough or the lcd screen being too fragile. Or some combination? Has anyone else found these screens to be doomed?

Also, are there any thoughts about whether the LP125WH2-SLT1 might be less likely ta fail compared to the LP125WH2-SLB1 or LP125WH2-SLB3?
