I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Solved: Picture Files

There are various places that something might have changed to bring that about. The simplest to check is as follows:

Go to your pictures folder.
Press Alt
Go to tools
Click Folder Options
Click View.
Make sure that "always show icons, never thumbnails" is unchecked.
Click OK

Unwanted encoding messages on opening MSWord files. Inability to open MSExcel files and picture files. Hi, I hope somebody can help me with this. Here goes:
Recently I cannot play any of my NeroShowTime.Files or .avi files on any media player without the message:
"Windows cannot open this file
To open this file Windows needs to know what program created it."
It then gives me the choice to "use the web service to find the appropriate program" or "select the program from a list".
I've selected many programs but they only play the sounds of the file and not the picture. When I "use a web service to find the appropriate program" it gives me the program IrfanView and when I try to play my file on it I get no sound or picture with the message "video not available, cannot find vids:xvid decompresor". The thing that really puzzles me is that some I have I could play before now but I can't now!!
Does anybody know whats wrong and how I can fix it?
Thanks

I recently purchased a new Dell Dimension 4700. It came with a trial version of Paint Shop Pro. Everytime I tried to view a picture, the little Paint Shop Pro trial box would pop up and I would have to open PSP to view a picture (jpg, .gif, bmp...) Now the trial expired, I removed the PSP trial from my computer and now my computer doesn't know how to open a jpg.

I assume there is a setting somewhere, some type of default to set, but I have no idea where it is. Can anyone help? OH, I have XP

I suppose I could call Dell support, but I don't have two hours to wait on hold to speak to some one in India......

Thanks In Advance,

I hope someone can help me here. Recently, I have not been able to save pics I download from the net onto my hardrive. I am running XP pro and use AOL 8.0.

I right-click on the pic I want to save, click Save as, then ok. When I go to My Pictures to view the pic, there is only the JPEG Icon (orange salboat), and when i click on it, the Windows Picture Viewer says there is no preview available. I try to view it in paint as well, but the same thing happens.

Also, when I save it, the save box only gives me the choices of .ART or Bitmap. If I save it .ART, Windows gives me a message saying that it needs to know what program created it.

Does anyone know what the problem might be? Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance,
Abe

All you have to do is load the .JPG up an almost any image viewer and then save the image in .BMP format (or any other format). InfanView is a free viewer which can convert between plenty of different formats including jpeg, bmp, gif, tif, etc.

I am archiving my photo files to CDRs. I am wondering what is the best file format to save them as. Is JPEG better than TIFF and if so why.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

A:Picture files

What are the pictures for? If you plan to print them at photo quality TIFFis your best choice. If they are to be viewed on screen used on a website or e-mailed JPG will allow you to get many on a single CD. Every time you save them to JPG you lose quality.

Most of my images are 30Mb TIFF. I tried LZW compression which is lossless, but it took them too long to compress and decompress if I wanted to look at a batch of them. I just limit myself to 22 per CD and use the full TIFF. CDs are cheap and my images are important to me especially the ones I have spent hour working in Photoshop. It takes a while to scan a roll of film in my film scanner and it is certainly worth 25c to not have to do it again.

My computer keeps deleting my picture files!

I have files on the hard drive of family etc... but suddenly some of the directories are now empty... several folders that I know had 20+ pictures each are now completely empty.

Could this be caused by my running the disk clean-up utility? I dont look at the photos all the time, so they are 'inactive' files but why would the computer delete pictures files!?

About a year ago I decided to protect my computer and downloaded many antispy, firewall, etc. programs. The programs slowed my computer to a crawl and I unwisely decided to do a full sytem restore back to factory settings to start from scratch. I saved all of my files to disc or so i thought. I ended up losing many family pictures that I put on my computer from my digital camera.

To make a long story short: is theri anyway possible that I could find these pictures even though my computer was fully restored back to factory settings. this was over a year ago, so i am not even sure of the names of files. I just know they were on my main C: drive. I figured it was worth a try.

I am using Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. I have an external hard drive which I have many picture files saved on. Today, while going through the pictures trying to organize them, I came upon a folder in which I was unable to open many of the pictures. I can see the picture in the thumbnail/icon view; however, when I try to actually open the picture, it just brings up a gray box with only a very little bit of the top edge of the picture (if it's portrait format) or side edge of the picture (if it's landscape format). I tried saving one of the pictures to my computer's hard drive to see if it would then open, but I got the same result. Like I said, some of the pictures in this particular folder I can open, but the rest react this way, when I try. Any ideas of what the problem could be?

Thanks!

I just upgraded from ME to XP and formatted my harddrive as part of the install. In prep for this, I copied all of my docs and pics onto a CD-R and then moved them into the appropriate folders after the install. My docs work fine, but all of my picture files are corrupt - sort of. They display as thumbnails just fine, but when opened, only the top 25-50% of the pic is normal and the bottom half is garbled.
Also, when I try to open the MY Pictures folder, I get the following error:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
Program C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.

Lastly, I have tried opening my pictures from the CD-R, but they still open corrupted. Any ideas on how I can salvage these files?

Hi,
Thank you for writing to us!
Thumbs.db is a hidden, protected operating system file, created by Windows 7,  containing thumbnail images of the pictures in a folder.  It isn't user-accessible, and there's no way to open it.
There might 3rd party software which might be able to help open these file, however we will not be able help you with that as per the data protection policy .

You can't open zip files in paint, any more than you could open "My Documents" or "My Pictures" in Paint. You need to extract the files with 7zip or winzip or a similar program, whereupon you probably ought be able to open the pictures.

I have A file folder that I've scanned hundreds of pre-1900 family photos into. Somehow four of the pictures have been corrupted. When I set the view to thumbnail in Widow XP I get the thumbnail picture view on all pictures exept these four. On the four I only get the JPEG or TIFF icon. They still maintain their file size, but they cannot be opened or previewed. I can't delete them either by right clicking or dragging to the trash. I wanted to burn the Picture file to disc and the only way I could do it was to "select all" and then unselect the four. I've moved the good pictures to a new folder, but now I am left with a folder with four undeletable pictures in an undeletable file folder. I can't delete the pictures or the folder. I've just noticed that some of my picture files (jpgs) in Windows Explorer dont show a thumbnail anymore, just the Microsoft thumbnail image. In Filmstrip mode, it says 'No preview available.', When I double click on the thumbnail, Office Picture Manager opens, but there is just a small red cross where the image should be. They wont open in any other software either (Paint, Picture & Fax Viewer or Picassa). All the pictures that have been affected this way say they were modified on the same date and time in October 2008. Also a Thumbs database file has appeared in some of the affected folders. What has happened, and can it be reversed?

A:Picture Files Won't Open

Sounds like these pictures all got corrupted by the event that happened in October 2008. Perhaps a sudden power supply interruption or something like that (or more ominously, perhaps a virus infection or something like that) seems to have either damaged part of the disk where these images were leading to the pictures getting damaged or the data in the pictures was corrupted.

A:changing picture files

To change, for example, <image.05> to a jpeg, where the original file was an image, just rename the file <image.jpg>

On the broader question, make sure that when you "Save As" the "Save as File type" (the box below "Save As") is showing .jpg

Another thing, what program are you using to save the files?

I have a Digital camera and have sent some pictures to other internet users using Outlook Express and attaching the photos to the Emails. When the receiver gets the emails and opens the attachments it goes into what sounds like a screenshow. Unfortunately not only does it contain the photos that I intended for the recipient to get but also other photos that reside on my pc. How can I stop this from happening??????

Oh my goodness!!!!

A:Unwanted Picture Files

It sounds like you are attaching the whole folder, not just the photo you want.
My suggestion would be to create a "for email " folder in your my pictures folder and copy just the photo you are planning on emailing there.

It is also possible you have some share to web style software included with this camera?
Are you copying the pictures from the camera to a folder (I normally create a new dated folder each time I transfer pictures such as if I took photos at the arboretum today I would put them in a folder arboretum042406 so that I knew when they were created, and that folder would be in a sub folder RawDigicamPics inside the MyPictures folder in MyDocuments. )
Then when I want to email some , I copy them to the ForEmail folder in MyPictures folder.

Just right click in My Pictures and choose new / folder and name it.

The opening as a slideshow is one way XP will display pictures when you have a lot of them.

A:having problems viewing picture files

Hello baylee1961,

Not much showing here that would cause those problems. We'll start here;

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad since you will not have any of browsers open while you are fixing this.

Download Spybot 1.4 from this site Spybot 1.4. Install the program, update the definitions file, click on 'Immunize' and run a scan. Fix all the entries, which are indicated in RED.

Please download Adaware SE and install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Go to this Site to get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. Also make sure to Customize the settings in Adaware for better scan results. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link doesn't work) and install it. Do not run it yet.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should... Read more

A:password protect picture files?

Hi mgrady2681, and welcome to TSG.

If you are the only one using the computer, why not just create a password protected user account and make sure that the admin account has a password and any guest account is disabled? Make sure that the computer is set to require a password when waking up from hibernation or sleep mode. If there is a possibility she may snoop while you step away from the computer, make sure to lock the computer when stepping away.

Keep the camera in a locked drawer to which only you have the key. If the camera needs to be used by other people, let every user have their own memory card to use with the camera. Keep your memory card locked away when you are not using it. Make sure that you do not use any of the camera's built in memory to store pictures.

I would like some ideas about what is available, or could be set up to allow the ordinary user to easily add information to digital camera files. I want to see the information embedded in the file, but also easily able to be visible. When tags, or comments are added in applications they are not stored with the file and the file info which can be added to jpgs cannot be viewed along with the image. Most people do not know it is there and it contains a whole lot of automatically generated camera information rather than user added details. I have found that most users don't add much more than a folder name to their photos, at the most, and files are not renamed. If digital images are going to be accessible in years to come, apart from the probable necessity of file translations and storage media upgrades, they also need some information embedded with them to give them meaning and possibly also to help in a search process. I think people will eventually be disappointed as they lose track of their image heritage among their many thousand images, which will of course become even worse as we move down through generations. I think a partial answer lies in embedded information relating to a few selected images - the equivalent of what would have once been put in an album, but now we have much more to choose from. But whatever is done, I think it needs to happen at the point of downloading the images from the camera and first viewing them on the screen, because that is the high in... Read more

A:opening picture files from an email

Hi

Don't worry, its not a problem at your end. Whats happened is that your friend sent you a file that is a shortcut to a file, so when you try to open it, its looking for the file in a certan location on your PC that dosent excist.

Ask your friend to resend it. It should have an extention of .gif, .jpg, .bmp, or .png. Not the .lnk extention.

Hope this help.
