Q: Solved: Solved: can anyone tell what generates this temp file?

I have a temp file ( ~DF2784.tmp 48KB) which appears in local settings. If I try to delete it I get the message: Cannot delete ~DF2784.tmp: It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again. I cannot find any program that is running it. It seems to refresh itself on boot up.

Can anyone tell me if this is generated by Windows XP? It seems to have appeared after upgrading to SP2 and loading IE7. The only other change on my system is installing Carbonite backup.

System: Windows XP SP2
F-Secure Anti Virus 2006

The only other utilities on my compter are:
UniBlue Speed up My PC
Registry Mechanic.

My systems seems to be working fine except IE7 bombs out quite a lot - "IE has to close down..." but runs perfectly on IE6.

I am not paranoid about temporary files but feel more secure if I know what is creating them and why they appear.

Preferred Solution: Solved: Solved: can anyone tell what generates this temp file?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Solved: Solved: can anyone tell what generates this temp file?

Yes, I get a Temp file about the same size, the exact number/name will vary depending on many different factors.

Assuming its in Temp Files under local settings, its expected and normal (that is what the location is for)

Chrome is my default browser, and if I have any problems with it, I have Firefox as a backup. I NEVER use IE . . . for anything. . . and don't even have a shortcut on the desktop for it. But I have every function of IE checked for cleaning by CCleaner, and every time I run CCleaner, it finds a huge number of IE temporary files (today it was 54MB) + a couple of cookies. My question is why/how are these created when I don't use IE at all?

I also notice that in the CCleaner settings, Chrome and Firefox have no "Temporary files" check boxes; only IE does. Does that mean that Windows (7) uses IE not just as a browser, but also a place to dump temp files? If so, why, and what are the temp files about?

I just spent hours working on a powerpoint document, saving it regularly...but I totally forgot I had open it from an email (I wrote the email, attached the document to it and then opened it and made tons of changes). My changes were therefore saved from the email (I would assume in some kind of temp file). When I was done, I saved (again from the email) and closed the document. Then, don't ask me why, I erased the attached document from my email. I guess I was going to attach the new version of the document but I obviously had totally forgotten all my changes had been saved there.
Please tell me my updated document is floating around somewhere on my PC....

Went through the whole process of finding all of the bad stuff.

I am supposed to delete this, the temp folder.

When I typed in the directions, (C:\WINNT\temp) what came up looks very different from what I saw at first.

I did a search for Temp or temp folders to see if it was another one.

I got a long list in each.

What do I delete?

Any TMP file that won't delete, is currently in use by one of your running programs. And, is nothing to worry about.

Why do you think that deleting this file would resolve your BMP problem?

As a BTW, I would start a post about this BMP problem, explaining where it is happening. In Internet Explorer, MS Paint, Paint Shop, some other app, etc.

A:Solved: Safe to delete TEMP file ???

You can delete without fear. You can also view this folder as : Users - username - Appdata - temp. Some files may be undeleteable.
It is one of several temp storage folders in Vista. If it is a question of concern for disk space, the only satisfactory solution is to employ a disk clean up facility. There is one built in to Vista - Disk cleanup. My menu is customised, but I think, by default, it is sitting in the Accessories or the System folder.

Hello all,

I have made a batch file which I will be storing on a server. The idea behind this batch is that it automates all the general 'Housekeeping' tasks for clearing up temps and IE history et cetera. The users of this file will click the link and run the batch on either:

XP Pro (SP3) w/ IE6 (Largly this combination)
Vista (SP1) w/ IE7 (Very few users - Who probably won't use the file!!)

The batch is fine - And I have not posted alot of code for the obvious academic reasons. My issue is the Cleanup in an IE6 environment:- The 'InetCpl.cpl' throws an error.

Now this may work perfectly in an IE7 environment, but I would love to know how to make the 'manual' options run for IE6

I have got this far, but fail on 'Form Data' and 'Passwords':

I have a data logging program that runs 24/7 and which displays a continuous record of the data on the CRT. It is really an MSDOS program, but it runs fine on Win98. When it is running, it takes over the entire display. The problem is that it will not tolerate ANY sort of screen output from another program. It immediately locks up, although it doesn't take Windows down with it.

I would like to use the task scheduler to run a little .bat script that uploads a day's worth of data to web page. I can redirect the output generated by various commands in the .bat to the NUL device, and prevent the script from generating any output, but Windows insists on opening a MSDOS window when the .bat runs, even though nothing gets displayed in it. Just opening the window is enough to derail the data collection program. I had hoped that I could do something like "upload.bat > NUL" but it doesn't work.

I could always write the script to run from another machine to control the process remotely, but I'm not thrilled with the idea of keeping a separate machine on line just to run a 10 second task once a day.

Anybody know a way around this?

A:Is it possible to write a .BAT file that generates NO screen output?

If you were running this on Windows 2000 or XP I would suggest using this.

There is a way to do this with a vbscript as well. Basically runs a command shell invisibly in the background without seeing it. I will have to digg up that link.

I have a script (Kindly originated by Golden in this thread http://www.sevenforums.com/backup-restore/317082-using-task-scheduler-fails-run-robocopy. )

Script robocopy I:\DATA M:\Backup_DATA /e /np /log:backup_log.txt which is run at shutdown.

In my M:\ drive I have two identically named folders: 'Backup_DATA', one (call it A) containing the correct 70 folders and 1003 files 295mb. Dated 11 January 2014 11:19:41 in properties, right click.
The second copy (Call it B) contains 2 folders 0 files 0 Bytes and is dated the same 11 January 2014 11:19:41 in properties, right click.

Although they are both shown on my M:\ drive as: (A) Backup_DATA dated 10/1/2014 at 16.46 and (B) Backup_DATA dated 9/1/2014 18.36.

I am not able to delete the ghost copy (B) as when I try I receive the following popup:
"Could not find this item. This is no longer located in M:\ verify its location and try again"

Not sure where to go from here, any suggestions? !!

I am unable to delete or rename the folder 'Backup_DATA', however inside the folder is another folder named 'e' and that contains another folder named 'np'. The 'np' folder is empty.
Now it seems quite a coincidence that both 'e' and 'np' make up part of the Robocopy script .

I am still unable to delete these sub folders as each one no longer exists on my M: drive.

A:Robocopy and Group Policy generates 1 real & 1 Ghost file.

Well, folder removed

Tried to do this in dos same problem, although it was shown it did not exist! Searched around and came across Unlocker. Using Unlocker I still could not delete the Backup_DATA folder itself, it remained even after the suggested re-boot. I had to delete the 'np' folder first, then the 'e' folder, and then the 'Backup_DATA' folder.

It seems Unlocker succeeded where anything else I tried failed.

Hello all.
I have two temperature sensor programs: Sandra and MBM5.

Sandra gives me temperature readings of:
board temp. : 28C
CPU temp. : 19C

MBM gives me:
board temp.: 28C
CPU temp. : 72C

When I run MBM first then Sandra "together", suddenly Sandra starts giving me values similar to MBM. But if I run Sandra alone before running MBM, it gives me the low nice values up there.

I realized something was wrong with the sensors so I restarted, checked temperature from BIOS and this what it gave me:
system temp. : 32C
CPU temp. : 33C
FAN: 2600RPM
System fan: 0RPM

Temperature from BIOS conflicted with the sensor programs. However I noticed that "the system fan" isnt working. Now I'm not sure what the "system fan" is since I didnt even know I had one. All I know is the heatsink and the fan on top of it is working and another fan at the back of my pc case is also working. SO how can it be '0 RPM'?

Also what can I do to Sandra and MBM? Why would MBM give false values? Is it possible that both programs conflicted or is it possible that a virus might be causing my CPU to "think" that its temperature is high even though it's not? Because I touch my heatsink and its relatively cool, somewhere in the 20's for sure.

Please note that I cleaned my heat sink and my fan yesterday and let it cool down for the night and as soon as I installed it this morning and turned on my pc it gave me the "70'C" which is im... Read more

Now i know personally that this is way way beyond anything it's supposed to come near but after a long phonecall with there tech support i get the decision that this isn't an issue and that if it was to start cutting out or if indeed something where to blow then that's when they will do something. If i knew intels guide for maximum tempreture for this cpu then at least i could hit them with that. Pardon me, as I'm mainly a unix user... I logged into my XP IE6 machine as myself (not my admin acct) and noticed my favorites (about 300 of them!) were no longer visible from the IE6 tool bar pull-down. There was only a one recent fave plus the four default folders you see with a new account. So, I entered a new favorite and then searched for it, and found under c:\documents and settings\TEMP\.

I then noticed that my ~300 "missing favorites" were actually still in the c:\documents and settings\ <user>\favorites\ directory.

How can I restore the soft link (if that is the issue) from my menu bar "favorites" to point to the c:\documents and settings\ <user>\favorites dir, which it presumably should?

P.S. I'm worried about just logging off and loosing them, as I have a lot of surf sites invested in there. Thanks in advance for your help...

A:Solved: Help Speedfan Temp - 248 F

You've marked this solved, did you find your answer?

284F is obviously a false reading, 140 degrees would be causing melting or a fire. Either Speedfan is reporting it wrong or the sensor is malfunctioning.

You can check the temps in the BIOS or maybe try a better utility such as HW Monitor: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html
The BIOS would be the best place to look.

Hope you order a quality power supply and not some cheapo unit that many places sell.

Unless you are overclocking any old AM3 compatible heatsink will do, but first I'd get a real temperature reading to see even if you need one.

Which temp files?
I've heard that temp files tend to accumulate and should be deleted periodically. Initially this seemed like a no brainer. But I've noticed that some programs that will do that for you have a disclaimer that implies deleting some temp files could cause problems. I realize that disclaimers are a C.YA. for the programmer, but it wouldn't be there unless problems have/could occur. When you're talking hundreds (or thousands) of temp files, it's obviously not practical to delete them one at a time, so how can I tell which are safe to delete? Some are directly on the C drive, some under Windows or system32, and others in the <Temp> folder or in various programs. Is there a difference between <.tmp> and <.TMP>? What about the <Temp> folder with subfolders containing files like <corecomp.ini>, <75ff0.Dll>, <odc.cab> or subfolders entitled <TCD14F.tmp> that contain documents I remember creating. A couple of subfolders I actually recognize the names like <Adobe\Acrobat\7.0\ > but it's empty. I feel like a deer in the headlights! I know just enough about regedit to get myself in trouble. (I can follow a step by step, but I don't really know what I'm doing.) I know how to make a back up of the registry, but not how to restore it. On the up side, I've gotten pretty good with disk imaging on both Acronis8.0 and Ghost2003
