I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

You don't give us a lot to go on SG. Do you see an outline of the box? Is it about 6"x4"? Do you run Zone Alarm?
ANY more info would be good.

When I loadup I get this box with a white " i " in a blue circle and yes or no. This doesn't appear on task manager and I couldn't identify it in the processes. I've searched other forums but to no avail. Help! Its infuriating. Is this part of windows gone wrong or something else? I also recently removed AVG as it wouldn't update and replaced it with Avast, should I be worried? I'll paste in a screenshot to give an idea of what this is. Thankyou please answer asap!

Whenever I boot up my X395 Thinkpad, an icon briefly appears and disappears at the lower center of my screen. It's a side view of a face, with a finger held up to the lips. I'm pretty sure it's a Thinkpad icon and not a Windows or app icon.It doesn't seem to be related to audio settings or mic settings, since these have their own icons. It seems to be telling me that something is being muted, but I don't know what.Any help appreciated!.

Hey.

I'm having a problem with firefox when trying to log on to certain sites. This is the type of dialog box I mean:

http://adhs.act.edu.au/myclasses

Also like the one used to logon to routers and such. The box keeps disappearing and reappearing, making it impossible to login. Any ideas why this would happen? It's a fresh laptop I just bought yesterday, and very little has been installed on it, so there should be no auto-login script or anything like that in firefox.

Thanks.

Hi,

I am not to sure on this one. The pop-up window looks like a simple javascript piece of code. From the link you gave this is a school website, which I would guess is where you attend class? How long have you been having this error? If it has been for a while then I might recommend that you contact the tech help desk or other support services, as this is something on their servers that might think that you aren't allowed on the servers.

Cheers!

then, something happens that may be related to this . . .

soon afterward, a boxed message appears saying: "System has recovered from a serious error . . . " Clicking on this results in a huge number of figures that would challenge anybody who attempted to write them down.

A small "Aladdin Lamp" icon occasionally appears on the toolbar at right side/bottom of my screen. If I click on it, it disappears. If I move cursor over it, no name or message appears, such as happens when I run cursor over the icons for Spy Sweeper, Volume, and DSL/wireless connection. Has anyone else had this strange occurence? This has happened several times over the last two months but not close enough to notice any pattern on what might be causing it to appear. I'm running Vista Home Premium on HP Media Center TV PC. AVG anti-virus and Spy Sweeper have not indicated any problems and so far, I don't think it has caused any problems. Searches on Google and other forums have not found any references to this "lamp icon". Any ideas?

Hi, whenever I boot up my computer, explorer will either show up for about 2 minutes before disappearing, or will not show up at all. It is also absent from the list of processes. If I go into the Task Manager and try to execute explorer.exe as a New Task, the desktop and toolbar appear for maybe 20 seconds at max, then disappears, then comes back, then disappears, etc. It continues this cycle maybe four or five times in total, and then just stops loading altogether. The event log says of this: "The shell stopped unexpectedly and explorer.exe was restarted." I ran a TrendMicro Housecall and removed the malware that showed up there, and removed almost all of the malware there (some of it refused to leave, like Zango, but I don't think adware as mild as Zango could have caused this). Actually, this had happened to me once before, and to fix it I ran a System Restore to about a month before it happened, but luckily for me, there are no useful restore points as options this time around. Anyone know of a fix for this? Apparently it's not completely uncommon, but solutions I've come across via Googling seemed too specific to that person's case and didn't apply to mine.

Everything was working properly on my Win 7 machine until I installed the driver for an HL 2070 Brother laser printer. Then . . .

I ran FreeCell and a dialog box appeared over the game. I tried to snip it but as soon as I press the Snipping Tool icon the dialog box disappears. I also cannot capture it with Print Screen. It vanishes when I press Print Screen. The dialog box interferes with playing the game. The dialog box is game appropriate, is eight lines tall, and says New Game/Select Game/Undo/Hint/Options/Change card deck/change background/exit.

When I go to Spider Solitaire I also get a game appropriate dialog box, not wanted, not asked for.

I scanned the machine with Security Essentials which found no infection.

The speaker volume was too loud, so I clicked on the volume control. The control stays up about 1? seconds, then vanishes.

MSWord functions normally.

Outlook, when clicking for creating a new message, brings down a dialog box, not the usual thing.

I find that if I press the Alt key the dialog box goes away.

I have uninstalled the Brother driver, shut down, and rebooted with the same actions continuing.

I’m puzzled. I have never seen this before. Any ideas?

Hi

Firstly my specs are

Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 @ 2.5GHz
Foxconn G31MX motherboard
4 GB installed memory
The current hdd is a WDC WD7500AADS

The hdd i'm trying to add as an additional drive and having trouble with is WDC WD40EZRX

I have just installed a new Western Digital 4TB green internal sata hard drive on my windows 7 PC

The drive is always visible in BIOS but whenever I start the Windows the new hard drive doesn?t show up in explorer or Disk Management. It will be visible in both after either scan for hardware changes in device manager or rescan in diskpart but when windows restarts I have to do this again for the drive to be visible. If I leave any data on the drive then once I have rescanned for the drive all the data is visible and intact.

Apparently this bug or similar issues are common in windows 7 but none of the potential solutions that have worked for other people have worked for me.

Other people seem to have a problem where the drive letter needs to be reassigned after reboot but for me once I have rescanned for the drive the drive letter I have previously assigned to drive persists and doesn?t need to be reassigned. I don?t know whether there is any relationship between these issues.

I?ve tried changing the sata port on the motherboard.

Hello and welcome Ben mate the board is getting on a bit and I was going to suggest you update the drivers for the SATA and / or the chipset but the support site is very vague and my next thought was to run this
https://www.slimwareutilities.com/slimdrivers.php now if you use this utility then do it with caution because like a lot of these types of programs they do carry some clutterware - plus when you have used it then uninstall it. If you are unsure of which to update post back and ask - no one here bites LOL!!
By the way getting rid of AVG to me was a good move as I used it years ago and found it rather lacking and intrusive.

But for starters it would not hurt to run these
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html < if necessary include the /f and /r in the command line as per Option2

http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/
ADW download from bleeping computer delete any rubbish found with the malware scans

the first two are the most important the other three you can ignore if you don't think it is a malware problem. But if it were me I would as it takes very little time to use them and they are handy for future use.

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

Are you highlighting this text while inside a browser? If so, which browser are you using when this happens? You might try removing each accelerator, restarting the computer and then putting each desired accelerator back one at a time (testing the context menu between each one).

For a week or so, when I went to log on, the site came up, but at the same time, a drop down or popup came, which said, headed by Internet Explorer, the message being "Do you want to close all tabs or current tab". Obviously I lose the site no matter my choice. Then a few days ago the popup stopped appearing and so did the site. Grateful for solution, with major thanks. CJ Brehme

I first noticed this was happening when I was playing games and the black window with a white border would appear, temporarily minimizing the game window. I'm having a terrible issue with my slave DVD optical drive disappearing more than appearing when I boot up my computer. I noticed the problem in particular after I installed a PCI-E controller card that installs a JMicron JMB36X driver. It seems though this particular driver is causing my optical drive deciding when it feels wanting to appear or not after boot ups of XP.

MassCool is the company where this card came from and they are not much help to say the least. They did come out with a Windows 7 driver which I installed on my Windows 7 partitioned half of this HD. I do not have this problem at all when I boot up Windows 7 and both optical drives have always appeared in "My Computer" there.

I have tried going into the registry to remove the upper & lower filters associated with the CD/DVD devices in the XP partition as I read that could be a viable solution but I have no uppers or lowers existing so there was nothing to remove. Any suggestions to further troubleshoot this issue so i can have my card and my optical working as they should would greatly be appreciated.

I was wondering if anybody else has this issue.
I might have reported the same problem again, but I'm not quite sure since I haven't logged in to the forums for a while.

In at least 3 of my Windows 7 installations to different PCs, I'm experiencing this crash many times when I click on download links.

The "save as" dialog appears to select a download location, and then it crashes... I cannot select a location, I cannot click "save", nothing.
I force the program to exit, and I get "Internet explorer has recovered a tab" getting me back to the download page where I was....the second time it might work with no problems, but it could also take 3-4 times.
I have disabled all IE add-ons...any thoughts?

I have to remind you, it happens to all 3-4 installations I have. Only common apps are the antivirus, which I tested both with AVIRA and AVAST, the same problem occurs.

I'm attaching a picture...

A:ie8 crashes when save as dialog appears

I've seen this issue with the last two installations of Windows 7. Doesn't happen with Firefox, Lunascape, etc., only IE8.

Well,

I have taken on the challenge of riding my aunts dell xp machine of nasty malware. I am left with an IE6 problem - I think.

short story goes like this...
I updated her XP to SP2, ran adaware, s&d13. found over 1000pc. of spyware/maleware, yes OVER 1000pc!!. eliminated all that. ran hijack this, got rid of a couple of things that were suspect. Then got rid of verizon dsl online - no easy task. The computer is running much more smoothly; however, IE6 is not up to par. She has a dsl connection, westell 2200, and I want to simply use IE6 rather than the verizon software.

I believe that I have set it up correctly. The trouble is when I click the IE icon the browser window comes up immediatly, but it is a good 15-20 sec before the dial-up connection dialog box comes up - I click connect and pow I am on the internet.

Why the lag? Is IE6 off in the weeds trying to do something else? Is this a by product of getting rid of all that nasty malware, but having traces left in the registry. I looked at her registry concerning IE,
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}
there are about 20-30 entries that are very strange looking. I compared it with my machine(same xp operating sys), I have only the 4-5 entries that one might expect.

I am tempted to clear this registry and replace it similiar to mine. is this going to far, am I missing something else on how I may have set up IE6 setu... Read more

Please download HijackThis. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Run a scan and save the log file. Post the whole log file here. Do not fix anything since most of them listed there are harmless (some are system required). This program will help us determine if there is any spyware/malware on your computer.

Do NOT replace the registry with yours. Unless your computer has the same programs that she has, it's a very bad idea. There are a lot of entries that will be different anyway.

I've been using Windows 7 (64-bit) Snipping Tool for years and suddenly today, when I launch Snipping Tool, the dialog box only shows the Title Bar and not the option buttons like New (with the drop-down arrow, etc) AND if I do get a screen capture, the Snipping Tool editing window (where you can highlight or use the pen) no longer allows me to change the type of image I capture (rectangle, window, etc.)

I have read many other posts here and else and nothing has worked. I've done:

- System Restore
- SFC /SCANNOW - no problems were found.
- downloading someone else's Snipping Tool and replacing the one I had in the System32 folder
- Went into Control Panel and made sure the Tablet PC open IS checked
- did a registry scanner - it cleaned up legacy stuff
- virus checker - always running and no issues
- have rebooted in Safe Mode, where the same problem occurs
- Did a System Restore to a few days ago - this did not fix the issue

NOTHING has corrected this.

Does anyone have any ideas besides what I have noted above and besides recommending other programs? I have SnagIt - but sometimes the Snipping Tool is perfect for certain things. Mostly, I am perplexed by this sudden issue.

I have attached two files to show what my Snipping Tool now gives me.

Thank you for your help on this. This is really perplexing.

My laptop W/XP presented a password dialog on startup or return from hibernation. It asked for a password (pw). I do not use a pw. I always hit enter, and W/XP began; no problems. Then I thought to improve things by checking Tech Support Guy's forums. Searching, I found a 2006 reply to my question which advised:

"run cmd > control userpasswords2 > ( ">" means enter)"

A dialog box appeared with a check in a box for "User must enter password". I unchecked the box. Then enter.

I restarted full of hope! After a short while, the familiar dialog box appeared "Log On to Windows". In the user name box, the word "Administrator" appeared, as usual. The dialog is slightly grayed out and super-imposed is another dialog which says "Unable to log you on because of an account restriction." When I click the "OK", the "Unable..." box disappears and "Log On to Windows" is fully presented. When I click "OK" again with no password, the second dialog reappears, and so on. All I can do is click "Shut down".

So what do I do now? I cannot use my computer.

Anyone?

Hello,

I have been having problems with some weird icon on the tray. The icon looks like a film strip and it appears and disappears in a total of about 30 times in less than 10 seconds. It only appears when I go to certain websites and those websites have nothing to do with eachother.

It doesn't make sense but I know that the program itself might be a codec I installed a while back that has to deal with video. It might be a video codec I installed because I have been having problems lately playing movies on WMP 9 (which I never had problems with until just recently).

So i've been using programs such as Divx Player and ViPlayer. I've thought it might've been one of those programs so I uninstalled both of them and the problem with the icon in the tray still is happening. I've had this problem before but I can't remember how I got rid of it, so that is why I am here.

So please, may someone help me with this?

btw, I've tried taking a picture of my desktop with the problem but it's either the icon that appears is way too fast or it just won't show up, sorry.

Iam using XP SP2. I also noticed that in my event viewer the automatic live update scheduler is being rescheduled everytime, its as if its just rescheduling every time it pops up.

Does it have anything to do with when my roommate's desktop is on/off?

which has varying negative effects on programs I am running. I'm not sure if this is a windows thing, or if it's some program I don't know I have, but it's awful.

Essentially, in my start bar, where it displays the windows I have open, one appears without a name for a fraction of a second, and then disappears. In most programs, nothing too bad happens, but in the game I'm playing, it completely freezes and I'm forced to close the game from the task manager.

I thought it was MS messenger, but I thoroughly rid my system of it, and the problem persists.

Any ideas or help would be very much appreciated. Thanks guys.

Hi GWS923, Welcome to TSG!!

Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.

Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

whenever i start my system the lang. bar appears in the taskbar and i have to right -click taskbar, go into toolbars and unselect the language bar. im convinced it's a bug. and it's driving my crazy. how can i fix this?

A:Solved: language bar always appears at startup

Courtesy of geekstogo.com:

1. Click"Start", then "Control Panel"
2. Hit "Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options", or "Regional and Language Options"
3. Press the "Languages" tab, then the "Details" button
4. Choose "Language Bar" button at bottom, and then uncheck "Show the language bar on the desktop"
5. Press "OK" and the Language Bar will be gone

Note: You can always just recheck to enable it again

If you really want it gone so you can't ever see it again:

1. Go to "Start", then "Run"
2. Type "Regsvr32.exe /u msutb.dll" and press enter

Good afternoon,

I am experiencing a very annoying problem in Windows XP. When I'm working on my computer, the shutdown dialog box (which says: Stand-By, Shutdown, Resart) suddenly pops up. This happens randomly and happens frequently (sometimes up to ten times per five minutes!), and I cannot see in the taskmanager which processes are using more CPU%.

Does anybody know anything about this problem, or does anyone recognizes this problem?

Thanks in advance,

Hi,

can you make a screen dump of what is happening?
Were you using a local account or a Microsoft account before the upgrade?
Are you sure that Microsoft Store is working at all?
Did you try switching off Windows Update via the Services.msc? this will also cause the Store not to function anymore

can you login locally (not with a Microsoft account?)

During startup/re-boot, the System32 folder would appear. I would close it and then my computer would try to connect to the net (dial-up).

Ran Norton Anti-virus software and found trojan hanging out on my computer. I cleaned it and then Norton would catch hidden files from the trojan trying to rear their ugly head and it cleaned them.

I also ran Ad-Aware 6 and SpyBot. Found all kinds of stuff, and cleaned that.

I still have the problem and need some help. I ran HiJack This and posted it below. Any help would be appreciated.

I am experiencing an issue on my PC where the login dialogue box only appears when running in safe mode. In standard startup mode, the blue standard background appears, but this is as far as the process gets. It will sit indefinately if allowed to. I have a cursor during this time, but I cannot tap ctrl-alt-del with any effect, nor any other windows shortcut.

I suspect there are some malware issues going on because when logging in via safemode, I get a number of boxes that quickly appear and disappear; at least some of them look like MSI installer prompts (Windows installer is obviously not running in Safemode). I have performed the following:

-Run Spybot Search and Destroy (latest version with latest definitions)
-Run AVG Antivirus 8 (latest definitions)
-Disabled ALL services and startup items and restarted (issue persists with only the RPC services running; as well as when everything is running as normal)
-Run through the registry with a reg fix tool and repaired errors found.
-Run CCleaner; both the Cleaner utility and the Reg scan utility. Resolved all issues found in reg utility and cleaned up quite a bit of disk space.

I have attached my HijackThis log below. I've attempted to go through it, but I would really appreciate if an expert could take a look as well. Thanks!

Dear Experts,

I am dealing with an infection from past few days and I am not being able to fix it. The problem starts just after booting up the system (Windows 7). It asks to confirm deletions of the desktop short cuts repeatedly through confirmation dialog box. If click on any application (for ex: MS Visual Studio or AVG antivirus ), it starts asking the delete confirmation for the same.

After infection the system had  started beeping  three-four times while booting.

Steps i had tried so far with no success to fix it:
=========================================

1. Existing AVG Antivirus 2013 (free edn) could not repair it. So tried Avast with no success. Both the antivirus detected some infections and fixed them as the reports said. The fixes were not related to this infection as per my thought. (I am sorry as I dont remeber the messages from the Antivirus s/w ).

2. My system was dual boot with Ubuntu and Win 7. After infection, some extra quick random extra characters started showing on the dispaly at the time of booting.

3. Thinking re-installing of win 7 after formatting of the c: drive would solve the problem, I format the c: drive and deleted the linux partions. The system did not boot from  Win 7 bootable DVD.

4. I could manage to install Win XP SP3 from a bootable DVD, but the problem reappeared. Now the beeping at booting has increased.

Please help me fixing the issues. I am not sure its a boot sect... Read more
