System Restore not working

Q: System Restore not working

I recently downloaded some drivers as I was trying to install a new printer who's software would'nt load. This did'nt solve the problem. I decided to get a printer that I had had before, Brother DCP-110C as I knew this had worked well. I tried to install yesterday (28th July) but could'nt and my PC keeps switching itself off near the end of the installation. I then thought I would use System restore to go back to a happier time when I had the first Brother printer. I actually used System restore about 4 times in one afternoon and now it won't let me restore any further back than the 28th. I thought if I could go back far enough the drivers I had downloaded would be dormant and save me trouble. I am a complete novice so if you can help me with this problem please post it in baby language, thanks in advance.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

So my little sisters boyfriend deleted all the history on my Google Chrome, 'to free up space' and I think he's been on something weird on my laptop, and want to find out. I googled how to get the history back and the other thing I fully understood was to do a System Restore to back before he deleted it. I did that three times to different points in time, definitely before he did it and it hasn't changed anything. If anyone else has any ideas they would be much appreciated, although please bear in mind I'm not massively great with computers! Thank you

A:How to restore Chrome history, system restore not working?

I don't think you can get it back unless you had a backup, System Restore doesn't affect data so that's why it doesn't work.

Why do you need the History restored anyways?

Hi!
I recently noticed that when I do a Google search, the link redirects me to random ad sites, making it nearly impossible to get to the page that I want. I tried System Restore, only to realize it won't let me go past the last step. Also, my CD/DVD drive doesn't seem to be working. You can watch movies and discs in the drive, but it will not recognize a blank disc for burning music or photos.
I have AVG, and it has only detected tracking cookies. I scan with Malwarebytes on a regular basis, and it never seems to find anything. I scanned with AdAware, and it detected tracking cookies as well. I clean out my Cookies and Temporary Internet Files folder quite frequently, but I can't seem to fix the problem.

Thanks for your help!

Please download RootRepeal Rootkit Detector and save it to your Desktop. * Close all programs and temporarily disable your anti-virus, Firewall and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. * Click this link to see a list of such programs and how to disable them. * Create a new folder on your hard drive called RootRepeal (C:\RootRepeal) and extract (unzip) RootRepeal.zip. (click here if you're not sure how to do this. Vista users refer to this link.) * Open the folder and double-click on RootRepeal.exe to launch it. If using Vista, right-click and Run as Administrator... * Click on the Files tab, then click the Scan button. * In the Select Drives, dialog Please select drives to scan: select all drives showing, then click OK. * When the scan has completed, a list of files will be generated in the RootRepeal window. * Click on the Save Report button and save it as rootrepeal.txt to your desktop or the same location where you ran the tool from. * Open rootrepeal.txt in Notepad and copy/paste its contents in your next reply. * Exit RootRepeal and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.Note: If RootRepeal cannot complete a scan and results in a crash report, try repeating the scan in "Safe Mode".

Accidentally deleted important files, system restore not working
I accidentally deleted some important files when trying to free up space on my laptop. Now, when I startup, it cannot go to my user. I lost my email settings, other functions. My docs are accessible by going to 'My Computer' then to drive C: then to the user, etc. However, from my Start menu, I can't get to them by simply clicking 'My Documents'.

I've tried to do some 'repairs' using Microsoft Knowledgebase but so far have been unsuccessful. I tried some of the suggested things and have made alist of many of the files that are missing when I tried to do a system repair. These files are not in the recovery section c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386. The list is here:

Lmmib2.dll
spider.exe
clipbrd.exe
hostmib.dll
staxmem.dll
admexs.dll
appconf.dll
iisadmin.dll
iisfecnv.dll
infocomm.dll
iscomlog.dll

I ran HiJackThis and the results are below.

any ideas would be helpful.

When I attempt to turn on System Protection, it doesn't show any drives available when it opens -- it just says that it's searching for available drives and it keeps searching and doesn't stop. Eventually, I'll receive the following Error Message:

"There was an unexpected error in the property page: System Restore encounter an error. Please try to run System Restore again (0x81000203)." also all button are greyed out. I wanted take an image to show you but that's not working either. Is there hope?

Hello to all,

A month back I accidentally deleted the wow6432 node from my registry under system_user. I believe this is the root of all my problems. Once I did that, my toshiba c885 D 64 bit would not boot. I forced the computer to shut down and pressed f12 to get to the system recovery options. I then restored to a point before my blunder. Well, my laptop worked for a while and then magically the screen goes black and will not reboot. I did sestem restore a few more times since I could get a little bit of work done in between restoring and the screen turning black again. After I was fed up with having to run system restore every other day, I decided to run system refresh to keep my files but reset everything else. After restoring I am getting the same problem and find myself again running system restore every other day just to keep working.

My questions are if I completely reinstall windows 8 and start from scratch, will this definitely solve the problem? I thought system refresh would have worked, so I'm not sure. Also, are there any other available options for me to fix my computer without starting from scratch?

Thanks so much in advance! -Aaron

Hi awrontherise,

Since you did not provide your specs, all my suggestions are just speculative in nature; however, I can tell you that a clean install will fix all system software corruption but if you also have hardware and/or driver issues they will have to be addressed separately. So, based on what you have told us so far, I would recommend this as your first step:

Repair Install Windows 8

Now, if the above doesn't work, you may have to take this route:

Clean Install - Windows 8

Good luck.

Hello,
I will try to explain this as best as I can so if you need any more information please ask and I will gladly answer. If this is in the wrong forum I apologize. If it is please redirect me and I will post it there.

I have built 11 computers, all containing the EXACT same hardware and software. I install windows 7(64bit), all the drivers for each component, and activated the copy of windows. The pc will run completely fine running any program I ask it to. The problem does not happen until I reboot the computer, now this is not always on the first reboot. These computers could last a few days and then I reboot and it all breaks. When I randomly reboot the system it will boot up showing problems and asking for a system restore. So I do the system restore and reinstall a few drivers and the same problem will persist.
I eventually get fed up with the whole process and decide to completely reinstall Windows thinking maybe I could have done something wrong(been doing this for 15 years no problem but it happens). After a completely random(as far as I can tell) amount of time and reboots the system will do it again. I am completely stumped on this issue and could really use the help. I have managed to get 2 working for a few weeks now but they hard bent cpu pins from the factory and I straightened them out. The other ones I have checked and they are fine(so it seems).
The System is running an ASUS P8Z77-v PRO motherboard, EVGA Nvidia 650 TI graphics card, i7-3770 CPU(may be an... Read more

The other day I was trying to figure out what coral paintshop pro meant by security key, so I googled it. Something popped up and asked me if I wanted to download, and I wanted to say no, but my laptop's mouse is too sensitive at times, so I accidentally clicked yes. My computer automatically shut down right after that. Every time I turn it on now, it goes straight into System Repair and it doesn't work, it says it cannot repair. I've tried System Restore, but since that doesn't get rid of the documents that have been downloaded, it isn't helping either. My computer won't even let me enter any form of Safe Mode, it just goes straight back to System Repair. Please help me. I rang the support line up aftertrying numeorus things and they told me to download a diagnostic toll for checking the RAM and hard drives. The RAM checked out OK but when I try to check the HD it says non detected. In the BIOS both hard drives are detected. Is there anything I can try? I dont think the hard drives are faulty as they were working fine 10 minutes before I tried to restore.

Hey everyone I am having a very difficult and annoying problem to fix. First it started out I wasn't able to do a system restore to an earlier time running windows regularly but in safe mode. Now I can not do a system restore in safe mode or running in normal mode. When I try to run the restore to an earlier point it will restart say system restore is initializing, say it is complete and boot up and then say System restore did not complete successfully and none of my files were changed. I have tried everything from disabling AVG antivirus to running in safe mode and researching the problem in debth, but I can not figure out what to do. This happens on every single restore point. A:System restore ..not working

The restore points could have become corrupt due to malware, or just an accident. You can try to purge (delete) all but your oldest restore points. You should only do this if you know for a fact that everything else about your computer is working fine and you are free from all malware. Now you should Set a New Restore Point The easiest and safest way to do this is:Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore. Then go to Start > Run and type: CleanmgrClick "OK".Click the "More Options" Tab.Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

One quick possibility. Go to the services icon in administrative tools and check that system restore is set to automatic. If it's disabled or on manual reset it to automatic. Once you get your machine make a restore point and lebel it 'after cleanup' or something like that. Any time you install or remove something, even upgrade a driver or run checkdisk, make a system restore point. It can save you major headaches.

Hello

My system restore fails every time I attempt it. This has happened the last 3 times I had a need to attempt restore. (Three attempts separated by months in time, about different issues.) This time, I am thinking something may be wrong with my system restore function.

In this case, it is simply a matter of trying to roll back a browser update.

I saw a whole list of available restore points, and I went to the second one back - from only a few days ago. The restore failed.

I am using Windows Vista Home Premium, OEM from Gateway Laptop about 1.5 yrs old. I allow most updates.

Any Suggestions? Thanks.

It's hard to diagnose the bootup problem -- but it sounds like it might be related to a buggered Windows update. Open the taskmanager (ctrl-alt-del) and see if "svchost.exe" is consuming excess resources.

If it is, run services.msc and locate the entry for Automatic Updates. Double click that and set the startup mode to disabled and reboot. If that resolves the problem you should probably follow the instructions here:

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/549822-solved-svchost-exe-slow.html#post4544272

There is also a hotfix that may need to be applied:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891/

>> Problems with System Restore unfortunately usually require that the cache be purged and reset by turning off (disabling) System Restore, rebooting and then turning it back on. This would fix it for the future but of course would be of no help for this current problem.

My System Restore will not create any restore points. Every attempt is met with the error "System Restore was unable to create a restore point. Please restart the computer and try again". The service is running, and I have turned Restore off, rebooted, then turned it back on to no avail. I cannot find any warnings in Event Viewer. I have even re-installed System Restore and run SFC to no avail. I have run different rootkit and anti-virus programs, but cannot find any of either. Does anyone else have any ideas?

I had similar trouble and my appeal for help resulted in LOTS of advice but nothing worked for me. (A search would find my original posting).

What did work for me was my installing the software Super AntiSpyware Free Edition and discovering by chance that there is a Repair section and listed is a repair of Windows System Restore.

I clicked on this and miraculously (!) my problem was solved.

I now have Super AntiSpyware Professional installed but my problem was solved with the Free Edition. Maybe worth a try?

When I try to do a system restore on my Dell 4600c a blank page pops up. Is there another way to
do a system restore? I have tried going to start>all programs>system tools>system restore I have also tried going to my computer>system tasks>system restore. I have had no luck there either.

A:System Restore Not Working

It is possible to run system restore from a command prompt. More info can be found HERE.Are you sure System Restore is turned on? Start > right click on My Computer > Properties > System Restore tabMake sure "Turn off System Restore on all drives" is UNcheckedIf that doesn't help, you have to ask yourself why it isn't working. Are you experiencing other buggy behavior from this computer? Does it run slower than it used to?

My main problem is that I accidentally uninstalled MS Office earlier today from my Dell Inspiron which I bought in 2012; the second problem is that I can't do a system restore to get it back to the point before the accidental un-installation. I'm on Windows 8. It keeps telling me there's something wrong but when I run a check on the C: drive, everything comes up fine. I opened the computer in safe mode, do a system restore and same thing happens - error.

I don't know if I can locate the original MS Office card that I received when I got the computer, to re-install the program, which is why I'm in a bit of a panic right now. Help is appreciated -- thanks!

I was at an internet coffee shop today. Unsecured network.

Using my laptop at home this evening, Outlook has opened at least twice on its own. Just in case, I tried a system restore to a few days ago, but apparently system restore function is disabled.

Thoughts? Thanks!

About 2 weeks ago, I started noticing the M$ update shield with the '!' in it appearing on the Shut down button. If I run Windows Update, it says I'm up to date. The shield nonetheless stays there all the time.

I've run a full Avast scan and a Malwarebytes scan. Neither comes up with any malware.

Figuring that something I downloaded might be causing the problem, I thought I'd try system restore. First tried a restore point WAY back -- October 6. System went thru the usual churning, but when it tried to reboot, came up with a window saying the system could not be started, and attempted (for 3-4 minutes) to repair the system. That failed, so I hit the power button, waited 30 sec., hit power button again. System booted perfectly. . .BUT not a single program had been deleted or changed. I was back to the system before running system restore.

Tried system restore from 2 other points, the last one only 2 weeks old. In both cases, same result. Restore fails, Win 7 attempts repair, that fails, hit power button, turn computer back on and system is exactly the way it was before doing the restores.

Anybody have any idea what's wrong?

I'm new to the forum and recently some of my startup items have stopped coming up (Skype, Spotify) when I installed Bluestacks.

I then decided to uninstall the software but the problem was still happening so I did a system restore from when I installed Bluestacks but this restore failed.

The RP1... RPxx files may contain 565kb one minute, 2.78kb then next. I've had one of those RPx folders show 90megs, come back a couple minutes later, and the same folder is showing 2.8kb.

I've tried the SR.INF install routine, and RP1 showed 256kb and RP2 showed 47.6MB. Checked it out a short time later, and both folders were less than 20KB. Something seems to be eating the files.

Tried to create a restore point and the pop-up message reads, "System Restore is not able to create a restore point. Please restart the computer, and then run System Restore again." Each time I restart and try to create a restore point, I get the same message.

When I try to restore to an earlier date, the right side message reads, "There are currently no restore points available"

Seldom does work, really.
You might try a full defrag and try again, but usually when System Restore doesn't work there is no good fix.
Any chance you have an infestation?

the system restore function on my vista/32 computer is not working. If I do a backup from the restore screen everything proceeds as normal and, upon completion I sometimes get the message "an error occurred" or maybe no message at all. When going back to restore from this point I get the message "an error occurred" and restore is not successful. This has only started happening over the last month or so. I have used the original installation disk to repair windows - but this has not cleared the problem. Thanks to all in advance

1. Disable AV and try restore
2. Delete all restore points and create one. Now try.

Hi, i'm having some problems reformatting my computer...I am not new to computers nor formatting a hard drive but I have never had this problem before. So my problem is that when I insert the system restore disk and restart my comp it tells me to push "R" to boot from the cd and start recovery so I push R nothing happens. So I tried using another system restore CD I have on startup it tells me to push any key to boot the CD so I push any key nothing happens again on both CD's it just does nothing just starts up normally to windows. So I know the problem is not the CD and i've already checked to see if anything happened to the keyboard and no...works perfect. Could a virus be causing it to do this? anyway if anyone has a suggestion or knows the problem plz reply :D

Thanks In Advance.

[edit]Sorry btw not sure if you need to know my OS but just incase its Win XP Home[/edit]

A:System Restore Not Working?

When you are asked to push "R" for recovery, that will actually take you into the Recovery Console. (sometimes it takes a while for the Recovery Console to open, be patient ) Learn more about Recovery Console HERE. It does not sound like that is what you want to do. If you want to install Windows, when prompted you will need to delete the partition that the existing instance of Windows resides on, and then install the new instance to the unpartioned space. This is called a clean install that will include formatting of the harddrive. Learn more about it HERE. Another option is to do what is sometimes called an upgrade or dirty install. Learn about that HERE.

I don't see anything in the Scanlog that would affect it, but this should be "fixed":

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

It affects the ability to to searches from the address bar.

Sometimes it is necessary to purge the System Restore cache and re-enable it. Then manually create a check point and test it.

I checked the Forums and found a similar case where the recommended action was to try Tip #1795 on WorldStart.com.com. I tried this and it did not work.

Can anyone suggest what I should try next?

It was fine before i last reinstalled windows xp. I wanted to do a clean format which the computer couldn't do for some reason It would only let me overwrite the previous installation. Its letting me open system restore and make my own restore points + automatic ones. But after trying to restore, it just says it was unable to, with no details explaining why.
