I have re-installed, as a clean install, Win7 Pro 64 SP1, on a Lenovo T40.Every driver on the website had to be downloaded and installed. However, I cannot regain functionality on the 'Fn' blue keys, which turn the brightness /volume etc. up and down. Also windows update seems reluctant to find any updates......Is there a keyboard driver for this model?I had no such problem with my S200 model re-installation. I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system
It's worked out well for many of us in the past.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)
I have a Commodore Laptop (Argentina) and all the keys that have a FN function attached to them do not work as their normal function any more - this happened after lending the laptop to my kids....
I think it may be FN lock, but can-t find any way to unlock it.
Any ideas please.
Check the Manual on the model's Support Downloads webpage for key combo to unlock: http://www.ehow.com/how_4968993_unlo...ey-laptop.html
Try updating or reinstalling the hotkeys driver from the model's Support Downloads webpage. Driver Install - Device Manager
While there look also for any downloadable fixes for these key functions or related.
It may also be disabled in msconfig>Startup. You can google the listings there to see what they're for. Normally you only need your AV checked and the rest are freeloaders, but some models require hotkey software to be running at startup if it provides anciliiary functions like backlighting, function toggling, etc.

Hello! So my notebook has a lovely function key line-up that lets me adjust screen brightness, turn the backlight on the keyboard, mute and adjust volume, pause/play/fast-forward/rewind, and turn the wi-fi on and off. I have never had a problem with these keys and use them all the time, but they all randomly stopped working a few days ago. I've tried pressing them in combination with the fn key, but they still don't work. And when I do press them, it seems like they are doing other stuff (for example, if I press f6/mute, the content of the google search/address bar will become highlighted). I thought maybe my cat stepped on some combo that turned the function keys off, but I haven't been able to find anything under "settings" that would allow me to turn them back on. I did the BIOS thing - they were already enabled in there, so I disabled, restarted, tried the keys with no luck, shut down, enabled, restarted, and they still don't work. I've been browsing the forums and downloading drivers that people have posted, but that hasn't helped. I've gone into the device manager and made sure my keyboard and monitor drivers are up to date. I've tried going through HP support for updated drivers, however Windows 10 isn't an option for my notebook, only Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, and neither of those had a hotkeys support driver option anyway. And before you ask, I've been running Windows 10 for a long time now without any trou... Read moreRead other answers
I've just had my laptop (windows 8.1) repaired with replacement hardware being installed. Something I have noticed that changed for the worse is how the brightness F keys do not respond. The F2 and F3 keys work themselves, but not the special function. It's really odd as the others work fine, such as volume.
I've tried uninstalling/installing two driver packs (I can't remember the names but one was Toshiba Utility Value or something are the other literally had the wording fn or f keys/keyboard in it). This has not worked.
Can someone help troubleshoot this for me? I'm sure when windows 10 comes along it all reset and hopefully work again but it's a very niggling annoyance at the moment.
Unisntall the Toshiba Value Added Package because this package isn?t compatible with Win 8.1 system
You need to install the :
Toshiba System Driver for Win 8.1
as well as the
Toshiba Function Key Utility for Win 8.1
Check also all the Win 8.1 64bit drivers available for this series.
I would recommend you to test the different graphic card drivers in case the display brightness would not work properly.
This is an ASUS Netbook with AMD processor running Win 7. It has ran fine for a long time. I connectyed to a unsecured network and since the I have lost the use of my function keys. I can no longer disable the keypad, adjust volume, Mute, and everything else that used to work with the function key. The "hour glass" icon is always present by the nav cursor like something is downloading.
Anybody got a clue?
Did you try going to the Asus support site and reinstalling the function keys drivers? Posting the complete model would also help.

First thing to try would be upgrading your keyboard drivers. If not, what make and model is your laptop? It may have an F-Lock function that has somehow turned on and needs to be disabled.
I recently bought a second hand sony vaio ne20e notebook which is less than 2 year old .I have found that the Fn keys do not work and have tried fixing this with the relevant driver updates to no effect .
I have put the problem to sony support and they have raised a further problem .The notebook is running vista ultimate 32 bit but ,according to the serial no.,sony says it was sold with a vista ultimate business operating system .Becauseof this they are unable to help further.
I would really like to remove vista ultimate and replace it with vista home premium .This os is running perfectly on my other sony laptop .Can you advise if this is feasible and ,if so , how do I go about it ?
Alternatively will any of the "repair ,boot and recover discs " help with this fault ?
If the laptop has a recovery partition, you can revert the OS back to the factory default OS. Or, the laptop may come with Recovery disks. You can also buy the Recovery disks from the manufacturer sometimes.

My backlight function keys don't always work. More often than not, they don't work, they simply do nothing. Moreover, if I try to manually change a setting in the power options, it doesn't change anything. I contacted HP via the online chat support, but they were less than helpful. The chat support agent I talked to clearly didn't know what they were doing. They suggested I reinstall all the ACPI drivers, update BIOS and update my video card driver....My ACPI drivers are all reinstalled recently (and really only one of them should matter), the BIOS was updated a week ago and my video card drivers are up to date according to device manager. The worst part of my experience is yet to come. The technician doubted my information and didn't want to trust that I knew what I was talking about, because they wanted me to open up things like msinfo32 and check my BIOS was up-to-date. Is it too much that I know something (I'm currently in a CS major so I know what I'm doing). They finally suggested I reformat the laptop (I have an HP Envy 17). I don't want to reformat and I don't know what else exactly to do. This isn't the first time chat support has been unsatisfactory but I know the keys sometimes work, suggesting the keys aren't broken and the software isn't completely messed up either. I am sure I don't need to reformat so here I am asking for some help. Thanks.
The online chat seems doing right by checking video driver, ACPI and BIOS.If one of those components was not right, the brightness control (fn+f7/f8) will not function properly. Since they dont know what you or other software have done, the easy way is to recommend you to do HP system recovery.HP system Recovery with factory installed feature will determine either you have software or hardware issue easily. If the recovery dont help then 100% you have hardware issue. My suggestion is to follow what HP support steps.Read other 9 answers

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
I?m sorry to hear that a few function keys of your Lenovo ThinkPad T440p is not working properly.
First of all, try reinstalling the hotkey integration features and power management driver.
Check if the keys are working in different applications. Some keys such as the function keys F1 through F12 will not work with every program. An easy way to test this is to open notepad or other word processing program and trying the key. Try getting into safe mode and see if the keys work. Remove the key from the keyboard and clean it. In some situations dirt, hair, dust, etc. can obstruct keys causing them not to work.
Please try to get into BIOS mode and see if the keyboard is working there.
1. If you are able to use the keyboard in BIOS, it could be a software issue. I would recommend in that case to do a System Restore which will revert the settings in your system to a previous time.
2. If keyboard doesn?t respond in BIOS as well, I strongly suggest you to contact our technical support for assistance.

Brightness Function Keys( f2 and f3) NOT Working , there is no option of adjusting the brightness in control panel, only option is calibrate the color.i am confused which driver i should install or update so that f2 and f3 start working properly.thanks!
Hi: The only suggestion I can offer would be to make sure you have installed the graphics driver...if the graphics driver is not installed, then you can't adjust the brightness. it is stuck on maximum. This package provides the driver that enables the Intel High-Definition (HD) Graphics in supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system. If high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) video output is supported, this package also installs the HDMI Audio Driver. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp72501-73000/sp72652.exeRead other 1 answers

Hi, Well that does explain why your f2/f3 keys aren't working as you only have the basic Microsoft driver installed - if the Intel driver was previously installed Ok, this may indicate a hardware issue. What happens if you try to install the Intel HD 5500 driver directly from Intel - it's the 2nd file in the list on the following link. https://downloadcenter.intel.com/search?keyword=Intel%C2%AE+HD+Graphics+5500+for+5th+Generation+Intel%C2%AE+Core%E2%84%A2+Processors If this does install Ok, restart the notebook and let Windows fully load for a couple of minutes before checking. I have a Asus Eee 900ha and have installed windows 7 32 x86 and increased total RAM to 2gb. Since installing Windows 7 my Fn keys do not work apart from F3 and F4 to change screen brightness.
Can anyone tell me what i need to do to get the Fn keys working again, ie. volume up/dowm, mute, numlk, zz, wireless etc.
I just purchased the L50, but the function key didn't work. I tried to restart, re-install the utilities but it didn't help.
I couldn't find the "restart flash card" also. Can anybody help?
Every new notebook with preinstalled original recovery image (operating system) has preinstalled right drivers, tools and utilities so I?m really wondering you cannot use function keys.
Have you noticed some problem with certain keys or with al F keys?
You can try to fix it installing Toshiba system driver and Toshiba function key utility but my opinion is that you should, if possible, reinstall OS using HDD recovery option. After doing this notebook will have ?factory settings? again and everything should be OK again.
Hi,I had to post this question because non of the solutions available on the internet worked for me. Some weeks ago, my FN + Function Keys stopped working on my HP ProBook 4540s. For example, FN + F7 = MUTE.I had updated all of my drivers, including the HP Hotkey Support driver for my laptop's model (even reinstalled); ran Keyboard Diagnostics in UEFI, everything was fine. I then decided to remap some of my keyboard keys to check if there was really a problem with my Windows and found out tthere was. Even after remapping, these combinationes weren't working. I thought to give it a try here in the forums before getting my laptopp serviced, I really don't think I need to do it because I believe there is some problem in the software like some option for this is disabled. But action keys was not even in the BIOS as others had (my BIOS was updated). Functions keys (F1-F12) were working, FN was working too but combinations aren't woking. Hope someone helps me out,HDash_Tech

Hi. I have a Lenovo 3000 v100 laptop, and it comes with its own set of function keys. You press the "Fn" key and then whatever corresponding key for various functions. However, recently I had a malware attack, and although I think it was fixed (in this forum), some of these Fn keys don't work.
Specifically, Fn + F7 (Monitor Control) and Fn + F12 (Hibernate).
Also, the "Lenovocare" hard button and the "multimedia control" hard button also do not work.
This link : ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/41w3465.pdf
has a bit of infomration on the Fn keys in general.
Also, around the same time (I don't know if this is related), but when I go to Power Management in the Control Panel, the dropdown list of Power Schemes contains nothing and I cannot set any of the options (i.e. when to turn off, standby, etc).
I have tried downloading and installing the drivers again, as well as various antimalware scans. The keys by themselves work (f7 and f12), and the Fn key in general works, just not together.
Can anyone help?
Or can anyone perhaps suggest a more appropriate forum?

I have the same problem: some of my function keys are not working.
My device is a HP zbook studio g3 with model number T7V83ES.

The keys worked on enterprise although I had some issues with it before only I forgot how to fix it. More people at my university that have the same laptop are experiencing the same problems, unfortunately this is not the case for everyone that owns the same laptop.
Here's what I did and what it resulted in:
-Installed every driver/program that seemed appropriate and was listed on the original HP website for software and drivers for my device.
Result: My keys were not working at all. (brightness, project switch and mic mute keys)
-I asked google and tried every single solution I could find, including the ones you suggested.
Result: Mic mute key is working, project switch key is also working, and as if it was a miracle my brightness keys are also working! But: my brightness keys are stuttering like hell. It takes windows ages to register my keystroke and even longer to register another one directly following it; it can not register 2 keystrokes in a row, it needs a sort of cooling down time for the button.
This is a list of my installed drivers:

I have installed the Middleton Bios third party bios and was wondering if anyone came accross the same problem.
I have installed it because I will be installing the 2.6 processor, and installing 8gigs of ram in my (i guess) Frankenpad.
here is what is going on;....
*thinklight does not work Fn+Pgup
*seems like none of the combinations using the Fn key are operatable.
* Ctrl/Alt/Delete does not work either.
Does anyone else have these problems, and if so, what to do?
I checked all my drivers, seems to be ok and up to date.
What Lenovo drivers control the function keys, or key combos?
I may have to go back to the Lenovo Bios.
any help would be appriciated.

I've installed the middleton bios over 200 times and never had any problems like this, but I'm wondering if you installed the version with Fn/Ctrl swap which is designed to change the functions of these keys. Try using the Ctrl key instead of the Fn key, if that works then the only problem is that you installed the wrong middleton bios. It is distributed with both versions. Considering that all the problems you list include using either the Fn or Ctrl key, I'd say this is your likely your problem.

Please help with a keyboard problem on my desktop PC....
I have windows 7. I just discovered that some of the function keys on my generic dell usb keyboard (which doesn't have an F lock button) doesn't work. I say some because I only use some of them
F1 - it just beeps every time i hit it
F2 - it just beeps every time i hit it
F5 - it brings up my unikeynt program in the front
F3 - it just beeps every time i hit it
HOWEVER, F11 key does work, toggling between normal and full screen
I tried switching to another generic usb keyboard and have the same problem, so it's probably not keyboard related. I tried the same function keys within MS excel, and they do work as they are intended.
The function keys worked this morning and nothing was installed since then.
The function keys on my keyboards are working in the opposite manner. Whenever I press any of the keys from F1 to F12 they perform the multimedia actions or their enhanced action. For example, if I press the F2 key the brightness of my laptop screen would lower. It should not work like this. I should be pressing Fn+F2 for the brightness of my screen to lower. The problem here is that I can't use Alt+F4 to close windows because its reversed, I instead have to press Alf+Fn+F4. I have already search for an answer online and I can only find that NumLock is supposed to be locked. But, it's a laptop - I have no such key. Looking for alternatives if anyone has found a solution. Thank you in advance.

I have a HP Pavilion tx2500z (model: KD436AV) laptop with Windows 7 64 bit OS installed. Since last few months, I am not able to use default function keys (F1, F2...F12) and other keys at the top row of the keyboard, including Pg Up, Pg Down, Home, End, Insert, Delete. However, all the Action Keys available on these keys are working without pressing Fn Key (e.g. Sleep, Brightness, num lock etc). I get same Action Key behaviour even after pressing Fn Key.
It looks like, somehow system is locked in action key mode and I am not able to come out of it. I tried to upgrade Bios (currently on latest F.0F version) and also tried to disable the Action Key mode in BIOS, but Action Key mode is not available in BIOS of this computer. Even to enter BIOS, I faced problem because F10 key was not working to enter BIOS setup. I had to connect external keyboard to enter BIOS.
I am disperately looking for help to come out of this situation. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
I've seen some keyboards (not sure with laptops) that have a way to turn on/off the F keys with a key combination. You might want to check your laptop documentation and see if that is the case.Read other 8 answers
After downloading Win 10, and a boot by the install software the screen went black for 20 minutes. No cursor. I turned the Dell 660 off. Upon turning the PC back on, Machine went back to original Win 7. Noticed that there is now no Dell logo after boot, no message for Setup or Boot Sequence. F2, F8, F12 do not work during post. Screen is black and goes directly to Sign in.Read other answers
