Playing MTS videos on Windows Media Player

Q: Playing MTS videos on Windows Media Player

I have a Windows 7 system that is running all Windows Updates available as on today. I assume it is running the latest edition of WMP; but, I can see no way of determining the version. It plays MTS (movies made on a Panasonic Camcorder) files just fine.

Now the problem:

I have another system here running WinXP with all updates available for it as of today. Again, I cannot determine which version of WMP. It will not play MTS files. It is running a Intel Core 2 CPU 6300 $ 1.86 GHz and 2 Gigs of RAM. It stops at a screen that says it is loading but remains black indefinitely with no progress indicator.

Any advice?

Am I just going to have to go to Win7? I know there are other programs that probably will play MTS; but, it would be nice if I could get WMP to do it without having to go to Win7.

Preferred Solution: Playing MTS videos on Windows Media Player

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am having a problem viewing my PAID FOR and downloaded iTune TV shows on iTunes because of freezing videos, etc. even after all of Apple's suggested fixes. I was told VLC played anything so i downloaded it, hoping I could just avoid using Quicktime altogether. I assumed that all I needed to do was get into the particular MPEG-4 video file and "open with" the VLC media program; The VLC window opens and the slider moves, but I get nothing, no audio, no video. I'm hoping I'm merely overlooking something simple. Anyone have any experience using this media player for videos? Thanks.

Hi all,

I installed Windows Vista 32 Ultimate, but I have a problem with Windows Media. I have lots of WMV videos I encoded with Windows Media Encoder (using Windows Video codec 7,8 or 9). I also downloaded some videos from internet, always encoded with previous WMV video codecs (7-9).

I always receive an error from Windows Media 11 saying that there's an error, not founding a compatible codec to play it. Did you ever had a problem like this? I need to encode a video, compatible with Vista, without the need for the computer to be connected to the internet to download additional codecs.

Any hint?

A:Media Player 11 not playing WMVs 7,8,9 encoded videos?

I've noticed that its always checking for the codec even if its a straight .wmv file. Vista just isn't making the grade yet (unless D+ is an acceptable grade). I think its actually running through some DRM checking before playing anything personally and it has most of the codecs at hand without going online to check for them, especially with the very well known and supposedly "native" formats. Its really a poor performing peice of software right now.

Nonetheless, it shouldn't be having any problem playing previous versions of .wmv encoded files so I don't know what the problem is there but I'd suggest trying the VLC Media Player as a replacement player. So far I've had no problems with it on my Vista platforms.

I have windows vista, since the begining I was using WMP to view videos I recorded with my digital camera. All was well and good until my friend gave me a couple vid clips from his digital camera in .mov format. WMP would not recognize the vids, so I downloaded Quicktime in order to view them. Well, I like WMP a lot better then quicktime, but now for some reason I can only watch my vids in QT, if I open them in WMP they will play the Audio, but it no longer displays the video. WMP SHOULD still be the default video player as I did not tell QT to make them defaults when I downloaded it.

I'm sure the solution is a simple one, but I'm stumped....

A:Windows Media Player Not Showing Videos

It might have happened by accident. Quicktime can be very sneaky. All of these apps have Options tabs so you have to go into WMP or Quicktime and enable or disable default depending on what you find.

Whenever i watch a video that was recorded with fraps then rendered with vegas, after a minute or two, the screen will just go black and there will be a buzzing noise and I have to restart.

It's really hard to be able to watch a video and make sure it's perfect before uploading to youtube with this problem persisting. Usually it takes about 1-2 minutes before it crashes.

I thought the issue may have been that my external drive that it is on was being too slow and causing a crash, so I copied a file to my main HDD and it still didn't run properly. though it did last slightly longer, however, that may have been coincidence.

Anyways, This is on a fresh install of windows, about a weeks old and made to try and stop thesse issues, and all drivers are up to date. This issue happened with COD4 online too but after reading some stuff, if you have a monitor plugged in that is not in use, removing it will fix issues, and it did.

My specs are: (for now all has been defaulted as I though it may have been OC that caused issues.)
i7 950 @ 3.07GHz
12GB Corsair XMS3 1600MHz
Sapphire Radeon HD 6970 2GB
Corsair TX650W

Using 11.5 drivers on AMD.com for 6970 and all drivers for the board are installed off of the asus website.

Please help with these issues, as once this is done, my computer may be perfect for me.

PS. This never used to happen with my 5830 (I don't think) and I only got my 6970 a few weeks ago. This will most likely be the main cause of it.

Sounds like you need a codec for the video file to play.

Download a codec package or the individual codec needed to play the video.

I just got a new computer that came with Windows Vista Home Premium. I've been trying to view some videos on the internet with no success. On the old XP, all I had to do was click a video link and Windows Media Player would spawn (pop up) and start playing the video (I have cable internet by the way). Howvever now on Vista, every time I click on a video link Windows Media Player doesn't open up, it doesn't do anything, and Explorer directs me to the error page of "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage." It doesn't matter what kind of file I'm trying to view, whether it's a mpeg, avi, or wma, the result is always the same. I can however pop in a dvd or my external hard drive and start watching any of the videos I have saved. It just doesn't do anything on the web. So if anyone can help me out, it would be much appricated. Thanks for your time.

A:Windows Media Player 11 Not Spawning For Any Internet Videos

You might not have WMP11 set to open up the said videos externally.

Do you have any other programs on your machine (to your knowledge) that are set to open those file extensions? (mpeg, avi, wmv)

If you don't think so, open up your CONTROL PANEL (ORB, CONTROL PANEL)

Open up SET DEFAULT PROGRAMS (if in classic mode; otherwise in normal mode, at the CONTROL PANEL HOME, click PROGRAMS and choose SET DEFAULT PROGRAMS)

If you have UAC on, you might be prompted.

If that doesn't work, look into what your browser has set as the default program for opening said file extensions.

I hope i was able to help.

Hello there, I am having a really confusing issue. I am on windows 7 Home Prem 64x. My windows media player is constantly updating my C:\Users\Maggie\Videos folder and it will not stop ever. I have even tried removing the library from windows 7 and it keeps updating. When I added it back I noticed some really odd folders in videos. "s2ms." "s35o." & "sk0." without quotes. When I try to open them I get the "refers to a location that is unavailable-" error. When I try to delete them I get "is no longer located in .... verify the items location and try again" error. When I look at properties it says it's a file folder. Windows shell cannon, I believe because the folders end with a period. The security tabs says it cant display the information. I can not rename them either. I am completely confused. I have never encountered these and can't find information online. Can someone help me?
I don't know if these issues are related.

Im at a loss at the moment. I cannot figure out why my wmp will not play streaming videos online. I've updated to wmp 11 and still nothing. However now any time I go to any site with streaming video or music it says "connecting to media" then the status reads "ready". Hi everyone,

I seem to have a problem with Windows Media Player: whenever I want to play a WMV video, it just says that WMP "encountered a problem while playing the file".

System specifications: Windows XP Professional x64, Version 2003, SP2 built-in, Windows Media Player 11 built-in

Most resources I find on the internet for this are for Windows Vista or Windows 7, however I have found and unsuccessfully tried several possible solutions. I now hit a dead end and still can't play the videos.

I have:
- re-installed WMP11 from the Microsoft website,
- installed a codec pack,
- tried several registry fixes I found (I reverted them when they didn't work).

I'm told installing another version of WMP could work, but my system doesn't allow me to remove WMP (maybe because it was built-in on the installation CD I got with the laptop). And without that I can't install WMP9, because it says that a newer version is already installed. I found some Safe-mode removal method on the Web, but it didn't work for me (I did boot into Safe-mode, but the program that was supposed to be able to uninstall WMP and that this solution said I would have in some system folder wasn't there).

Any ideas will be appreciated. Please ask if additional info is needed.

Windows Vista
Gateway computer

I like to download videos/trailers on the internet.

My default player is Microsoft Windows Media Player.

I would go to websites to watch videos. When I would click a link for the video (usually a WMV file), my Microsoft Windows Media Player would open up, then a few seconds after buffering, the video would start to play. While the video was playing, I could click to go forward, the video would pause (buffering), then play again. Basically, the video was streaming off of the internet.

I found a AVI file, but when I would play it, there was audio, but no video. So I downloaded an AVI player (GOM Media Player, http://download.cnet.com/GOM-Media-P...html?tag=mncol). I installed this new player to watch AVI videos. After I intalled the program, all of my WMV videos on my computer were using the new player. I clicked on a WMV file (from my computer) and made my Microsoft Windows Media Player be the default video player for WMV files and the GOM Media Player for my AVI files.

Then the problem started........

Now when I go to websites with links for streaming WMV files, the entire file downloads, then the media player opens up to play the video. I can't stream videos anymore.

Here is the website that I would go to to play/stream wmv files....... http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/media_movies.htm

I tried the help that came with the Microsoft Windows Media Player, but I couldn't figure it out. I wanted to uninstall the player ... Read more

I've been having the same problem for about three months now,
and when i go to this website,
and try to watch live T.V. on the website, the windows media player window will pop up normally, but it will say "Connecting to Media" and then it will say "Ready" and have a play button, and when I click play, it still will to the same thing over and over again.
This website only runs with Mozilla Firefox. I've always been updating Mozilla and I have the latest version of Windows Media Player.

I have some .wmv files that I would like to watch. (dirtbike riding stuffs)
I have watched these movies in the past but now all of a sudden I click on the files and Windows Media Player opens up like it's gonna play the clip but nothing ever happends. Nadda, Zero...nuth'n
This also applies for .wmv files off the internet.
(I've tested with many .wmv files and media player always opens up like it's gonna play but never does)

It has worked in the past.

I have Vista Business x64 sp1
I've tried to reinstall windows media player but I get a message telling me I already have the latest version instsalled: 11.0.6001.7000
I downloaded this, Windows Media Player Software Informer: Latest version download, news and info about this Microsoft Corporation program. Expand your horizons in the field of playing videos., which says it's version 11.0.6001.7000 but I still get the same error message.

I googled fix's and such but nothing I tried has helped out.
Tried reinstalling SP1, won't let me, says I have it installed already.

I'm not that great with Vista in regards to uninstalling media player (if that's possible) in order to reinstall it.
If someone can help me out here, I'd much appriaciate it.

Thank you.

I need some serious help here.

I had downloaded a video with .mkv extension from azureus. It was playing in both vlc and wmp10 but with jerky video.
So I decided to install a codec for playing mkv files.
I went to http://www.cccp-project.net/ and installed their codec pack. Then wmp10 stopped playing the mkv file!!!
Then I panicked and uninstalled the cccp codec pack. Now wmp10 plays no media file

Someone told me I have to restore my Directshow! Is it true? If so, how do I do this?

A:Windows Media Player Not playing anything!

Download a more popular codec pack like K-Lite Codec Pack from here.
