Q: My computer thinks it's a Windows To Go computer but it's not...

Help! Somehow my computer running W8 for the last 4 weeks now thinks it's a Windows To Go machine. I have no clue what I did to cause this but I would like to know how to put it back to normal.

Preferred Solution: My computer thinks it's a Windows To Go computer but it's not...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: My computer thinks it's a Windows To Go computer but it's not...

MS created a KB article about the issue:
In Windows 8 multiple operations fail if non-WTG installs are configured as Windows To Go installation

Hi All, after I login I often (it's not everytime) get a pop-up message that says
Note. This is not a screenshot of my system just the message that pops up.
I do have a USB 3.0 portable hard drive that I usually leave connected to my computer however when these messages started appearing I tried booting without the drive plugged in and still got the message.
I am running Windows 8.1 Pro and have never tried creating a Windows to Go Workspace, heck I never heard of Windows to Go before this message.

Is there anything I can do to determine why this pops up and stop it?
The only reason I can think of is the recent changes to my hardware and software, I bought some new RAM after my old set failed and because of this I reinstalled Windows before I discovered it was the RAM giving me all the BSOD's. I also recently installed a new graphics card (the Nvidia GTX 750 Ti) however I first noticed the message before I had the graphics card.
I have two hard drives in my PC a 240GB SSD with Windows on and a 1TB hard drive with my films, tv shows and music on.
Thanks for any help you guys can lend me.

I have been googling around and it seems that people with the same issue (or at least a similar one) when they take out the USB that Windows is apparently booting from, Windows crashes. This does not happen to me, I can take out my portable hard drive and Windows will still run.
Other people with this similar problem cannot access the Windows Store from a Windows to Go Workspace. I... Read more

I was following instructions found on Solution to this post"Re: Y500 - How do I tell if automatic SSD cache is working?"  I uninstalled ExpressCache using Control Panel and then uninstalled the partition on the 16GB SDD and rebooted the computer.  I then started the installation using ExpressCache_x64_118.exe.  After a few steps a message popped up saying I had not rebooted the computer after the last ExpressCache uninstall.I proceeded to reboot and try the exe at least two more times to no avail.  I have looked in the Registry for an uninstall for ExpressCache but none of the items in the uninstall folder concern ExpressCache.  I also looked at Program files and deleted the Conducive folder after receiving the first error message.I'd appreciate knowing what my next step should be.thanks

In my device manager, it's seem like my Win 7 think it's a notebook computer when I'm using Acer Aspire X3950-U3022. There isn't any single explanation I could think of that could have caused this. The screen flickers though. I can still access my computer using teamviewer, so working from the computer isn't a problem for me.I believe that this is a clue to the root of my issue.

Whenever I try to view a streaming video the buffering bar starts out nice and slow, and then starts doubling itself! Soon it's up to 100% and the movie starts. In about 6 seconds the play bar has allready caught upto itself. I can't just press pause and wait for it to load either because it's a streaming video . So any help would be great.

A:Help my computer thinks it's better than what it is!

Try opening up Windows Media Player and going to Tools>Options. There should be a tab on there that deals with buffering or internet connections. On this tab you should be able to adjust the time allowed for buffering or the speed of your connection. You may want to specify a minimum time for buffering in this tab.

Hello! I have just joined this forum so be nice

My OS is Windows XP SP3.

I've never had problems before: I recently bought 50 blank Infiniti DVD-R discs. The software I used is CovertXtoDVD and basically, I added a film to the software for converting, an hour or so later it tells me to insert blank media, so I inserted a 4.7GB blank DVD-R but my computer is telling me the blank media is a CD. I have also tried putting a numerous amount of discs from the 50-pack spindal into a different computer and it is still telling me they are CDs.
When I go to 'my computer' after I inserted the disc, it has no mention that it's a DVD in the drive. My guess is that there is a problem with all 50 discs? As I say, I've never had problems before and have used the same software and same kind of discs for a very long time now, the problem has only started with this brand new 50-pack spindal.

Please help, thank you.

The computer I'm using (HP Compaq running XP-Pro SE3) was originally set up new in Chicago, Illinois.
I inherited the machine and it is now in Ohio.
The problem is that some applications I use and many internet sites I go to always think that the machine is still in Chicago. Even Internet Explorer thinks it's is still "presented by Comcast", the old Chicago ISP.
I have looked for files that contain the word "Chicago", but never turned up anything that would solve the problem.

So, I wasn't sure exactly where to put this because I'm not sure if it's really a Spyware issue (though it probably is, heh), but my computer thinks that it has barely any room left. :/ Currently, my C Drive status is:

Preload (C:)

File System: NTFS
Free Space: 4.16 GB
Total Size: 142 GB

Now, I have a lot of music I've put onto my computer, so I wasn't terribly surprised at first, but then I downloaded a program called TreeSize Free (which basically sorts all of the files / folders in your C Drive by size, giving you the total size of your C Drive). TreeSize Free says my C Drive is 59,911.6 MB, which, if I've calculated correctly, is 58 GB. Now, I don't really know the logistics of TreeSize (it might not count hidden files, also it told me access to "System Volume Information" and "RPbackups" was denied), but 58 GB isn't even half of my total space. It's a pretty large discrepancy and I'm fairly certain somethings up, especially because a few days ago I cleaned out a TON of my unused programs / music / etc. All of a sudden all this space was taken up again in the span of a few days.

Here are my logs. Sorry, but gmer.exe crashed everytime I used it around half way through, and I tried like 3 times. So I gave up on that. If there's another program that does the same thing as Gmer.exe does I'll happily use it.

I run W7 Professional on a desktop computer with an Asus P9x79 Pro MB, Intel i7 3930k3.2Ghz processor, 16Gb Ram. It's a very stable computer, but suddenly I've had occurrences where the fans ramp up speed and the screens go blank. I power down and when I reboot I get a MB screen and a message to tell me that overclocking failed and to reset my startup options. I go into Bios and restart the machine and it starts happily.
I have no desire to overclock and haven't modified any settings or installed any new software for a while.
What could this be?

A:My computer thinks I'm trying to overclock

It may be that the PC's battery is dead or dying. Hence the corrupted BIOS settings.

I bought a 60 gb ssd and wanted to run my windows on this drive and install everything on seperate hard drive other then c. anyways winodows takes up to 35 gb on the install leaving me with just over 20 gb. installed sims 3 and 2 other expansions well now I have 10 gb left. with three more expansions I will be down to nothing.

So I downloaded r-drive image and did a system copy to a bigger Hard drive. everything worked out but when I went into the store it says that windows store is not available to mobile workspaces. ok fine I figured it out to be a group policy setting that gets a workaround for this. But I am still considered to be a mobile workspace. What issues will I have being stuck on mobile workspace or how can I fix this.

I have a lot of errors with my Internet connection.

There seems to be no way of manually connecting (it's literally impossible to connect manually if your displayed as disconnected), but I can auto-connect to the wireless Internet which means that sometimes I will have to repair and sometimes I will have to unplug/replug the wireless connector on my computer (it's not consistent, some times the computer doesn't like repair ).

Well that's confusing but I think it comes down to be recognized as disconnected when I'm connected and vise versa. Does anybody know how to fix that?

I'm also missing the Internet icon in my task bar, probably due to never being connected, but it doesn't appear when I'm disconnected either.

So yes, I have lots of bugs

What model wireless adapter are you using?

Make sure that you have the updated Driver.

Try letting Windows manage the wireless device instead of the manufacturer utility.

Recheck your connection settings be sure your dial-up connection is still disbled.
Some windows updates have a bad habit of resetting settings back to defaults and any custom settings are lost.

I've been trying to deal with a NTVDM.exe error for a while now and the information on the error can be found on the blizzard tech support forums where I initially went to try and solve this.

But I just noticed something when I went to reinstall warcraft 3 today which I have never seen before.

Why would it think that I am running windows NT when I am running vista, and could this explain the ntvdm.exe errors?

A:My computer thinks it is running in NT?

Vista is built on the NT platform - in use since Windows 3.1. Vista = NT 6.

What I read in your links is that the program is looking for 16-bit NT DOS. You can run 16-bit apps on Vista x86; not on x64.

Hi. I'm having a weird issue after having cleaned a computer of infections. I'm feel pretty certain that the computer is clean now. Adaware, spybot, and a panda online scan, and trend micro online scan all report clean. The hijackthis scan looks OK to me also. However, when booted normally the computer seems to think it's in safe mode.

First, instead of automatically logging in to the single user account, the log-in screen displays the single user and the administrator account... like it would if i were booting to self mode.

Second, BITS is set to automatic but is stopped. Attempting to start it yields this error: "Error 1084: This service cannot be started in Safe Mode"

Third, Attempting to uninstall Norton AV yields this error: "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.

I checked msconfig and /SAFEBOOT is not checked in the boot.ini. I'm stumped.... can anyone help?

Thanks for your time,

I really have no idea if this is a software or hardware problem...

I moved my computer from one room to another and plugged in a Pixo headset and when I turned my computer on I noticed that the clock ticks off a minute ever 2-3 seconds. Cursors also flash at super-speed, flash advertisements and gifs go super-speed, and I can't double click anything because I can't click fast enough, so whatever the problem is, it seems to have affected everything.

I also lose my internet connection (it's DSL) every minute or so and I no longer have audio (even when I plugged in my old audio device). Also I twice had unexpected shutdowns when running system checks.

Seemed to me like a virus, but Bit Defender says I'm clean. Also sounded like a possible RAM problem, but checked that too and my RAM is OK. Windows Defender also says everything is OK.

you might have a virus or trojan. Do a full system scan with a virus scanner if you have one.

I searched the forums but didn't quite find the answer to this one. I did not have this issue with my old computer

New computer, Vista Business, clean install everything

MB: Poly 3500b DDR2 1333FSB/CrossFire/WiFi ATX MB
Monitor is an HP LP 3065, which functions as a USB hub

I plug my mouse, etc. into the monitor, then drop the usb hub cable from the monitor to the computer.

The mouse, etc. works fine. Sound doesn't all of a sudden. In device manager, I suddenly have two sound devices...the real sound (onboard), and a "usb device" .

Clearly my box is interpreting the usb cable as a sound device (and further overriding the onboard sound with it).

The current workaround is simply not to use my monitor's usb functionality. I'm plugging the usb devices, such as my mouse, directly into the box. I have a lot of usb ports, so it's ok.

Still, it's a puzzle. would love to know any ideas why this is. I can reproduce it very reliably. I also updated the HP 3065 drivers on the computer.

I was using my computer last night when suddenly I noticed that in addition to my 2 actual DVD drives- there's now a 3rd one listed. I only have two physical drives and when I click on this new 3rd drive icon, I just get a message saying to insert a disc, etc.

I know it's possible to create virtual drives or something but I don't recall ever doing that, nor would I even know where to begin doing that.

I'm wondering, could this be some sort of a sneak attack on my machine or something?

I'd like to get rid of that 3rd drive, unless it serves some purpose I don't know about?

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Rest assured- help would be greatly appreciated.

Since I've been messing around with my network few months ago, my computer frequently think it's disconnected, so while I'm browsing the Net, there are random popups that want me to connect (like when you click on a dial-up connection or a .dun file, so it prompts you). But when I deleted that connection, now Firefox gives me this:
Network Connections
Cannot load dialog.

Error 623: The system could not find the phone book entry for this connection.

IE gives me a dialog that prompts me either to select a connection or to "Work Offline" (I'm sure you're familiar with that dialog).

Now, those popups happen on my user account only, and it wouldn't be such a problem if FTP worked every time.

Often, when I try to connect to my server using FTP (trust me, everything else works fine, the server, etc.), I either get a "The computer is disconnected from the network." error or "A connection with the server could not be established." error (which started to popup now, that's why I'm posting here). The problem is that my computer thinks it's disconnected from the Internet but DSL is connected all the time; it IS connected to the Internet. And it happens only on this PC on my WLAN (consisting of my PC, and two laptops, connected at pretty much random times). There are no IP a... Read more

Here is what I did: Originally I had Windows 7 installed on my C: Drive. I then split the drive into two and installed Windows 8 onto the second half. I then formatted the Windows 7 part, changed it into unallocated space and merged it with the Windows 8 partition.

The only problem is that my computer will ask me whether to boot from Windows 8 or 7. If I boot W7 then it goes black and my PC restarts. I have the F: Drive which is Windows 8 and the G: Drive which is "System Reserved" with a file called "bootmgr~2" in it.

What can I do to fix this situation.
PS Another problem I have is that I have 1mb of unallocated space before the "System Reserved" partition and then Windows 8, like this: [1mb Unallocated Space] [100mb System Reserved] [450gb Windows 8]. How can I remove this space as I cannot merge it with the "System Reserved".

A:Computer thinks that there are still two operating systems

Use EasyBCD and boot into Windows 8. Use the software and select Edit Boot Menu, and delete Windows 7. The 1mb of space is not an issue....you should leave it alone.

A:Computer thinks java is disabled

Is this your computer?

You can obtain Java Runtime Environment from here by clicking the green icon with white arrow.

Download and save it, then close all open browser windows, then double-click it to install it.

Do not install and use McAfee or Norton.

Obtain McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool here and obtain Norton Removal Tool here by clicking the "Download @ MajorGeeks" link.

Download and save them, then close all open browser windows, then double-click each one to run it.

Restart the computer if prompted to so the removal process can finish.

Your computer is a real mess.

Besides being infested with malware, spyware, etc., it's loaded with outdated and unneeded programs and add-ons.

You might consider doing a clean reinstall of Vista and getting a fresh start.

My laptop fell off of the bed with the headphone attached - when I went to take the headphone out of the jack - the jack seem to have shifted inside of the computer - it was difficult to get the headphone out of the jack, but unable to connect the headphones to the jack anymore. It is out of alignment, and it appears as if the computer still thinks there is a headphone attached, I have no volume - but when I run a test to see if my audio is working, it is detecting volume. I attempted to take the back off, took out all of the screws but for some reason the back would not come off simply, and I didn't want to break it, so didn't go any further - Does anybody have any ideas on how to fix this problem? Thank you.

After having attempted to use a Sandisk cruzer mini 256MB on an older computer running Windows 98 (after installing the win98 driver), the USB key will not work on a newer machine running windows XP. It appears as drive E: in my computer when it is plugged in, but when you attempt to access the drive, it asks you to insert a disk.

We'd appreciate any help,

A while back I started having this really annoying problem with my computer. I have a Media Center PC with a Bluetooth Wireless keyboard (I can use from the couch) and mouse as well as a Media Center remote.Today I was watching tv on my computer and went to fast forward to find that MC wasn't responding to the remote. (I know the remote is working because the LCD display on the front of my case was displaying "Fast Forward") so I grabbed the mouse to try to fast forward that way and none of the controls popped up (only the time line and the clock) so I grabbed my keyboard and tried that, no response except that Ctrl+Shift+Esc caused the screen to go blank where nothing was able to control it (tv sound kept playing) so i gave up and did a hard shutdown and restarted it. A little while latter It did it again but this time I pulled out my USB keyboard and removed the batteries from the BT KB, and was able to get back to desktop to find that double clicking on any icon brought up the corresponding properties dialog (acting like the Alt key is being held). Sticky keys are turned off and unplugging the USB KB (so there are no KB's hooked up now) didn't resolve the issue, had to restart again to get it to stop. It just did it again a few min ago (thats 3 times today) Is there a way to stop this from happening? BTW it is the computer in my sig. Thanks in advance

My computer somehow thinks it is running a processor with AMD64 architecture. Running the SET command shows:

PROCESSOR_IDENTIFIER=Intel64 Family 6 Model 30 Stepping 5, GenuineIntel

Shouldn't it be identifying as IA64, rather than AMD64?? I haven't noticed any problems, but find it rather disconcerting. I built this computer myself and I know for certain the processor is Intel i7 Quad Core CPU.

Should this be corrected? If so, how do I change it?
Thank you.

What does Bios say? Also what does your motherboard allow?

Also check for any updated drivers and updates for your BIOS from the the manafacture of your motherboard.

I just reinstalled my audio drivers and the program that sets up the speakers is not splitting the channels. Dunno how to really explain it but for instance, when I run the speaker test (tests left and right channel) and it plays the left or right channel, the sound comes out both speakers.

Im using Realtek AC97 Audio and the program it comes with to set the speakers up is called Realtek Sound Manager. I cannot for the life of me figure out what setting I need change to make this computer realize I got 2 speakers that works off one jack lol. However when I go to control panel and access the sounds and audio devices, I am able to split the speakers but the Realtek Manager still has things sounding ridiculous.

Once again thank you =)

Howdy folks,

I'd be really grateful if anyone could help me with this weird problem. I have a computer that's running Win98 SE, and a monitor by Spectrum, that I got from some online store about three years ago. They have been working fine since I got them, until recently.

You see, the computer was running, when all of a sudden the screen froze up. So I hit the reset button. Upon this, my monitor suddenly displayed the message "No Signal Detected," and my computer started making this weird and irritating beeping noise. (Both, however, remained turned on, so they were both receiving power.) I presume that this noise is supposed to alert me to the fact that the computer, though turned on, is not detecting a connection to the monitor. Only problem with that is, the signal cable was still securely in place connecting the two.

I've actually had this happen to me twice before (also fairly recently), except those times, I just unplugged the signal cable and screwed it back in, and then the computer would stop beeping and boot up as normal. When I tried this quick fix yesterday, it failed to work. This morning, however, I tried turning on the computer and it booted up fine, without any other action on my part. However, ten minutes later, it froze up again and I was back to listening to the beeping noise and wondering what on earth was going on. That's about where I am right now.

If anyone could shed some light on this mystery, I would be very gratefu... Read more

That Virus Protect Pro crap infected my computer last week, which is when this problem started. I finally found something to (I thought) get rid of it, SmitfraudFix. Along with the other problems, the shutting down stopped for a couple days after I did a scan with that program. But the shutting down has come back with a vengance. For a while I couldn't even get a program open before it would shut down again. Now I have a little time to write this.

Using SmitfraudFix or other antimalware programs now makes it a lot more likely that it'll shut down.

It's not always a shut down. Sometimes it restarts, and rarely it just logs off.

I've turned off auto restart in my computer settings. But this does nothing.

If I go into safe mode, it is an instant restart, unless I go to safe mode command prompt. That command prompt is the only place I am safe to scan and stuff.

So here is my hijackthis log, and below it I'll post a SmitfraudFix log:

Hi, All ~
Well....I am hoping someone can guide me or give some advice on what may be wrong with my computer/internet connection....who knows what it is. Here is the problem:

We have dial up internet through Netscape, and have used it successfully for about 2-3 years. About 3-4 months ago, when we were online, the computer would randomly disconnect from the internet connection. However, upon checking the status on our computer, the computer will show that there IS a connection, even though one can not send/receive email nor access web pages, and when we pick up the phone, there is no dial tone.

We have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the modem. My husband has called Netscape, did what they said, and still we have the problem. We have tried using a different ISP. The time we remain connected can be very random: 2 minutes, 5 minutes, 14 minutes, but usually less than 20. However.....when we log on using the new ISP, we seem to be able to stay connected longer (maybe 30-40 minutes), although we are still getting "kicked off", for lack of a better term. Also, this is the second time this has happened to us. We used a different ISP from Netscape: it worked great for a while, then started disconnecting. When we switched to Netscape, it was great. No problem. Now we have the connection problem, and even though we have tried still another ISP, it seems to still be happening, although as I said, we do seem to be able to stay on a bit longer than 5 minutes.

Any suggest... Read more

I had an eMachine that the motherboard failed on. I took the hard drive out ( the only drive ) and now I want to add the hard drive as a secondary drive on a new computer ( Dell running XP ). Is there a problem connecting this drive up to the computer? There is information on the first drive that I don't want to lose - my concern is the the fact that that the hard drive I want to add was the Original start up drive on my other computer.. Any input on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.....

A:Adding a hard drive that thinks it's the primary to another computer

You should not have any problems as long as you have the room and the cables to put the old drive in the newer computer. You may need to change jumper settings on the old drive.

If you get error messages about not being having permission to access the files on the old drive, you may need to take ownership of them on the newer computer.

EDIT: Forgetting my manners. Welcome to TSG.

Unless I have speakers or headphones plugged in, my computer gives me the red "X" over my sound icon in my system tray, and anything that involves sound won't work. This is annoying because I don't always want to listen to sound at work, but I still need to be able to play things that have sound while I listen to music from another source.

I guess I could just find a wire to plug into the headphone jack (yup, that works) but that seems silly. What gives? I've never had this problem on any other computer.

A:Computer thinks it has no sound card unless headphones plugged in

That's normal behavior from what I've seen. If not output devices are detected, the sound is disabled. I'm not sure of the part you are stuck on, but if there's no output device connected, then you obviously aren't going to hear any sounds at all. Your computer likely doesn't have an internal speaker, either. If you want to hear sounds, plug in speakers or another output device.

A:computer thinks my external Cd drive is an unnown device

Ideally it should be detected by the operating system, but you might need to install a device driver. What kind of external drive is it, and what does it connect to (USB, SATA, or Printer Port)?

Hi everyone.

I recently acquired a fairly old computer and reformatted it, putting windows ME on it. The computer is a Pentium 2 350 MMX and has 64mb ram.

The problem I have is that I can't get better screen definition than 640x480.

I went into Device Manager and it listed the graphics card as a RAGE PRO TURBO AGP so I downloaded and installed the driver for that. I still couldn't change the screen definition, and was getting a yellow exclamation mark by it in device manager.

I then took the case off. Removing the Graphics Card revealed that it wasn't a rage pro after all, so I had downloaded the wrong driver. The actual Graphics Card is a Maxi Gamer Phoenix card. I uninstalled the Rage Pro driver and downloaded the driver for the Maxi Gamer Phoenix card, the dgp-9x-304 driver.

Upon trying to install the new driver, it stops responding around halfway through the installation and will not install properly. In addition I have also downloaded a folder of drivers banshee.zip and unzipped that. As the installation won't complete I have tried to browse for a driver in the relevent folders but it isn't recognising any correct drivers there.

In addition to this, under display properties there are TWO monitors listed:

1. Hyundai DeluxScan 17B on Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA)
2. Default Monitor on RAGE PRO TURBO AGP (the graphics card which I don't have!!)

When I try to remove either one from hardware profiles, it will always come back upon r... Read more

I'm new here, and have a question that hopefully you guys will laugh at and say "ahh, that's easy"...

My DVDRW Drive for some reason has decided that all dvd's that I put into it are "Blank CD's", even though I'm trying to run legitimate store bought games and movies. I have another cd drive, and dvd drive that I have unhooked in the hopes that making my dvdrw drive the master and only drive again would solve the problem. It didn't.
When all 3 drives are plugged in they all had the same "Blank CD" message, so I'm inclined to believe it's not the drives themselves that are malfunctioning..
