More information available on KB3025097, "Invalid device" from the Windows NFS client?

Q: More information available on KB3025097, "Invalid device" from the Windows NFS client?

Is it possible to get more information on KB3025097?

I am working on an NFS server implementation and I'd like to know whether there is anything that can be done to avoid the issue from the server side. The KB article does not say what was the issue with the NFS client and how the hotfix changed the behavior.
Any additional details about the KB3025097 issue would save me the trouble of trying to tweak the NFS server behavior to see if the Windows NFS client will accept it.

Any hints on what the issue is related to would be very helpful. E.g., is it something about our FSSTAT reply that Windows NFS client doesn't like?

Ultimately we need a solution for all recent Windows versions (Win 7 or later), but any information that applies to any
Windows version would be helpful and valuable.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

We used to have "stereo mix" option that enabled streaming audio recording without having to have the audio playing through the speakers. How do I do that now? What replaces that capability? Who makes my sound card? Why is that not readily available somewhere in Dell land? I can't believe forum searching found pretty much nothing on this.

While using "Windows Explorer" as an FTP client I have put the system into a state where any attempts to access an FTP folder from "Windows Explorer" produces the following dialog:
Dialog Title: "FTP Folder Error"
Dialog Icon: Information Icon
Dialog Text: "Windows cannot access this folder.  Make sure you typed the file name correctly and that you have permission to access the folder.  Details: No more Internet handles can be allocated"
Dialog Buttons: OK
I had used the "Add a network location" feature of "Windows Explorer" to add an FTP site.  The FTP folder appears under "Computer" in the left panel of "Windows Explorer."
It is not mapped to a drive letter.  I then initiated a large FTP transfer operation by using drag-and-drop from the FTP folder to a local folder.  A portion of the transfer completed as expected but after some time it produced the "No more Internet
handles can be allocated" error.  When OK was clicked the transfer was terminated.  In this case I am using large to refer to many thousands of files and directories to be transferred as opposed to a small count of files having many bytes.
After the initial error dialog is cleared with the OK button and the transfer is terminated I can then reliably reproduce the dialog.  Any attempt to open an FTP network location

Hey guys/gals, I've been having a huge problem with a friends Vista machine. I couldn't fin anything about this error online and as a last resort I started posting some questions online as I don't have more than a few days to fix this. I posted this originally on tomshardware:

I was trying to install various "Atheros AR5007EG Wireless Network Adapter" drivers, with versions ranging from 2007 to 2010, both form the manufacturer and specifically for this computer (a Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo Mobile) and others from here:
All of them are for Windows Vista 32bit.

The computer had previous drivers installed and working, but also had a network problem. In the process of figuring out what was causing it, I tried to install newer drivers to see if that was the problem. It turns out the network problem was due to a different thing that is now fixed (some dependencies of the WLAN Configuration service were turned off), but I'm still stuck installing the new drivers.

The problem:

However, every time I install new drivers, after install, Windows says that "The device instance name is invalid", regardless of what drivers I install. I even tried to install drivers for different hardware in that slot just to see what it told me and IT STILL gave me the same error. I also tried to uninstall the current driver, checking the box to delete the driver's software, running CCleaner and then deleting "... Read more

That dxdiag "no sound card" message is misleading as I've found it says that if no driver OR sound card. I think you're missing the right driver

Also, it would seem from your post you have High Definition (HD) audio. Which means you'll need to find the right High Definition audio driver. (AC97 pre-dates HD audio so the Realtek AC97 couldn't be right)

Try starting on the HP support website HERE and enter your model number or they have a button where they'll try to identify your product and drivers for your model. They should list an HD audio driver there

First let me tell you about my system.   This is an Inspiron
E1705/9400 laptop with the T7400 Core 2 Duo processor running at 2.16
GHZ.   It has 2 GB of RAM and a brand new 500GB Hitachi Travelstar hard

It previously had Windows XP Professional (32 bit) and worked fine.
But, I have three computers in my home and home office and would like
them all to work better together on my wired home network, so I am
upgrading all three to Windows 7.   My two desktops (one is Dimension
XPS 420 and the other is Dimension XPS 430) seem like they will be no
problem to upgrade to Windows 7.   But, this laptop was not listed on
Dell's Windows 7 Compatibility List.   However, the Windows 7 Upgrade
Advisor that I downloaded and ran seemed to say that it was OK to do a
clean install of 32 bit Windows 7 and it only had a few minor concerns,
where it said to check for updated drivers from the manufacturer.   The
laptop originally came with a 100GB hard drive.   For my use, that is
getting very small, so I decided to get the same exact 7200 RPM drive
in the 500 GB size.   This will allow me to do a clean install of the
32 bit Windows 7 OS on the new hard drive and not have to wipe the old
drive to do it.   I can just hold onto the old HD and stick it back in

I tried copying a fresh version of the file to \Windows\System32. No dice. I tried renaming it all uppercase and then all lowercase. Nothing. I put a copy in the root directory. No effect. I tried everything I could think of, but nothing worked.

Then--doh!--I stopped thrashing and did what I should have done initially: I dug into the Microsoft Knowledge Base and learned about XP's built-in Rebuild command. It can often easily fix "Missing HAL" and similar problems in just a minute or two. If you know about this command and how to use it, you can potentially save yourself hours and hours of manually reinstalling or rebuilding a failed operating system.

Hi, I've looked all over the internet in attempt to find a solution to a problem that's just affected my computer, and I haven't been able to find anything that relates specifically to the problem I'm encountering.

This hit my computer without warning, I switched it on this morning and it worked as normal, all of a sudden things started to freeze up. I restarted the computer, and now a lot of programs are refusing to open - Microsoft Office, among others, states "Error: There Are No More Files", whilst other programs such as Google Chrome and Internet Explorer state "Attempt to Access From Invalid Address", even when I am running them from their root folders.

I am running a Dell Latitude 830 with Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 (2.00GHz, 2M L2 Cache, 800MHz) Dual Core, 1.0GB, DDR2-667 SDRAM, 2 DIMMS, Intel Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 and am obviously using Windows XP. I have scanned my system with Avast Antivirus, which didn't state that there were any viruses, so I am stuck as to what exactly the problem is.

I'd really appreciate some help in figuring out what has happened, thankyou so much for your time in reading this!

Hi, I'm trying to reinstall my sister's scanner driver because XP has decided that it's not there any more. This happens occasionally and usually reinstalling the driver fixes it (I think that's what I did last time), but this time i just can't get it to work.

If i unplug the USB cable then plug it in again, it comes up with a message saying that the device has malfunctioned and it doesn't recognize it. I have the driver CD but windows always manages to install it as "Unknown device" before i can tell it to search the CD. I've tried telling it to reinstall the driver from the CD but it says that there are "no better matches for this device". I've also tried uninstalling the program form the CD and reinstalling it then restarting the pc but that didn't help either. I tried plugging it into another USB port (as suggested by Windows Help Center) but that still didn't work.

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

Hi guys, it's been ages since i have been on here but everytime my problem always gets solved! So here's the story. I have a Dell Desktop that's about 5 years old and running Windows XP SP3 with Internet Explorer 8. It has really never caused me issues, nothign at all like this. Just yesterday I fired it up and clicked to open a random folder, then clicked ot open internet explorer and BAM, the Blue Screen came up and displayed -

"Invalad Process Detatch Attempt"
Technical Info -
Stop: 0x00000006 (0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

I believe i recallt his happening once or twice before actually the more i think abotu it, and i rebooted for it to never happen again. This time i rebooted, and it happened again after a few minutes. Than again and again...sometimes quick. sometimes 10 minutes into doing stuff on it. I seem to be able to trigger repeatadly if I start one process like opening something and then try and open internet explorer while it's still trying to prcess the previous task...but it never did this before and it's not all the time.

I tried to do the best research i could, i downloaded a memory checker and everythign turned out fine. I then attempted 3 progressive System Restore Points, finally with the last one being 3 months back, the furthest point available, to no help. It still happens. So i undid all restore points...i'm baffled!

Thanks ahead of time for all suggestions and help, I truly appreciate it... Read more

This is the third time I'm trying to make this post. This is absurd. What do you have only a minute before you get timed out? This time I saved it to notepad so I can paste it...

I just wrote out about 10 paragraphs only to have it all lost because this site had logged me out before I could submit it. Just another frustration.

Well, I'm not going to sit here and type everything out again. Took me forever. So I'm just going to sum it up.

I keep having the same issue when trying to share data on a Windows 7 network. It's beyond frustrating. In my opinion, Windows 7 network is unintuitive and broken.

Today I had to replace two computers on a clients network. It's a simple small business network where I'm just using a normal computer running Windows 7 to share some data. The problem is that sometimes, at random, a computer will not connect to the share. It will tell me that I have the wrong username and password when the share doesn't require a username or password. I made two identical computers that were set up the exact same way. The first time they both connected to the share just fine. I was shocked and happy as I almost always have the issue I'm describing.

However, I ended up having to reformat one of the machines and set it back up again. I did so the exact same way. This time it won't connect to the network share. It prompts me for a username and password and no matter what I put it will not let me connect. I have been having this issue for a long time h... Read more

The hard drive is a Western Digital 320 GB that I've had plugged into this computer before (and worked). Then i got a virus and had to do a recovery of windows.

Ever since then I can't get windows to recognize/show it in my computer. I just "disabled" and "enabled" it in device manager to no effect. I have a C, D, and E drive which are: two partitions on the hard drive, and then the CD drive (respectively).

So i'm stuck, not sure where to proceed since it's obviously not the hard drive itself, I use it on my xbox all the time. What next?

A:External Hard Drive doesn't show up in "my computer" but does in "device manager"

Does it show in Disk Management ? ?
Right clik My Computer...select Manage...then Disk Management.
Find the drive...right clik it and select Properties.

OK. I got given a laptop to fix. The problem was is that the O/S was hanging and BSoD. I thought, ok, simple fix or repair will do the trick. I was very wrong!

I tried several ways to make XP boot but failed, I gave up in the end so I created myself an XP bootable disk. Took around 10 minutes to create, all fine, no errors. Put it in the Fujitsu laptop and what a surprise, it doesnt want to boot. So I tested this CD on another laptop, it worked like a dream.

So, my first question is "Why doesnt my XP bootable disk want to load on a Fujitsu laptop?"

Next, I burned a XP iso file onto a disk and tried to boot to get into console recovery. This booted up fine, did my stuff but no help to the corrupt XP on the laptop. So I thought, ok, let me try and do a repair. This started to repair the O/S which was perfect, then BOOM! a pop up message saying "Enter your serial number in...". I looked under the laptop, wrote down the serial number, triple checked it, entered it in and "Invalid serial number".

So, my second question is "Why in the hell doesnt it like a valid serial number?"

Ok ok ok, now your thinking.
"Why dont you just reinstall the O/S from fresh?"
Well, the answer to that is well, the person has family photos on there of his kids and he doesnt want to lose them.
Yes, no back up was made.

My thoughts are on that laptop is that the laptop hard drive is corrupt, a bad few sectors or something.

Here's the problem: It seems that I don't have a boot.ini file on my computer, and I need to figure out how to add one.

I'm running Windows 2000, and the machine usually boots up okay... but it always says "invalid boot.ini file, booting from C:WINNT".

Occasionally, the machine will freeze up as soon as it's turned on, and I've gotten both 7F error (UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP), and 7B error (INACCESIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE). I'm hoping that I don't get any more fun surprises.

However, I'll repeat that the machine usually starts fine, except for the "invalid boot.ini file" message.

I've tried to look at the boot.ini file in the control panel's system/startup & recovery/advanced, but it tells me that 'boot.ini can not be viewed'. I've also tried to look at it by going to 'Run' and typing "notepad c:\boot.ini {OK}. It then tells me that it can't find the file and asks if I want to start a new file. That would be fine (I guess), but I'm not sure exactly what should be in my boot.ini file.

SO... for a relative newbie, how do I go about replacing the boot.ini file in Windows 2000 (Service Pack 4) without doing something else horrible to my computer?

Anybody have any idea on this one?

It's Emma. This is my first post. I don't know if anyone on here can help but I'm crossing my fingers ...

I never had a problem with Vista or with Windows DVD Maker - until last week. I couldn't view a media clip that a friend sent, and she said I needed to downlaod these free codecs. So I did. But I think they ruined my Windows DVD Maker.

Now, when I try to burn a DVD using Windows DVD Maker, it starts out fine, gets close to the end - and then it stops, ejects the disc (usually at 98% complete) - and gives this error message:

"Cannot Create DVD. Invalid Class String"

So I first disabled and then deleted those codecs I downloaded - but that didnt help. I tried using different blank DVDs and tried burning different videos but the result is always the same.

So I tried searching this forum and other forums for help - but I can't even seem to find what an "invalid class string" is.

I just want to be able to use my Windows DVD Maker again. has anyone ever heard of this problem? Does anyone know what an "invalid class string is"? Can anyone help?

Thanks so much for reading.

A:Windows DVD Maker & "invalid class string"

Hello Emma

Try doing a System Restore to before you installed the codecs.

If that does not fix it I hope someone else has another idea to help

Hello, I've been using windows 7 64bit with no issues for 2-3 months, I recently as sitting at my computer when I had a power cut, then I started having problems with my LAN....
When the power came back, I logged onto my computer and discovered I could not connect to the internet, it said I was connected to an "Unidentified Network". Not knowing what caused this, I assumed it was the power cut, so I tried using a lot of help threads
to try and solve the "Unidentified Network" issue. I also ran the troubleshooter, and it said "Local Area Connection does not have a valid IP address".
I tried changing it statically - No success.
I tried reinstalling drivers - No success.
Short of buying a new NIC, I have tried everything, noting appears to work. When I connect the Ethernet cable I have two solid orange lights at the slot on my computer. Here's a printout of my ipconfig/all maybe there's something I've
dont wrong or something has configured itself wrongly.

Thanks for the post!
This issue is caused by an invalid IP. Let’s try to get new IP automatically.

Input cmd in search bar, run as administrator
Input ipconfig /release, then input ipconfig /renew
If it’s still fail, please input ipconfig /all
in cmd to check the result to see if the computer have a valid IP.

Does the computer connect to a network device? Such as router or switch. Please temporarily remove/replace it to check if it works.

In same sub net, other computers? Do they work?

Hi, I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate x64 connecting to Server 2008 x64 (NOT R2) via the terminal client, MSTSC "Remote Desktop".  When I first connect, my connection shows as fullscreen (as per my settings) with the connection bar (the "flap" at the top
that has the minimize, retore and close buttons on it).
Here's my problem... if I hit the "restore down" button, the RD window shrinks down and I can resize it etc like any normal window.  But now if I hit "maximize", instead of going fullscreen again (like in Vista's version) it maximizes the RD window,
but leaves the title bar in place.  So now my RD window has scrollbars because the titlebar and other bits of "chrome" around the window have shrunk the viewable area, but my remote desktop remains at the same resolution.
Basically, I just want to know - once you have resized a Windows 7 remote desktop winow, how do you get it to go into fullscreen again, so there's no title bar etc. in the way, just the remote desktop you want to work on.
Thanks much,

I know someone else has asked about this error message, but the incidence here is quite different. I am running a Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop on which there has only ever been one account -- mine. One day the computer suddenly crashed  and when I restarted
it, my desktop would not load, none of my programs would run, and I encountered the message listed in the subject line of this post.
I enabled the Administrator Account, tried to manually modify the registry as another thread instructed me to do. That did not work. There was no duplicate account key with a .bak ending. Even after I accessed the hidden Administrator account, I encountered
the same error message. The computer will not let me create any new accounts.
I am not linked in to any servers, nor is my account a part of any larger network. My home does not even have internet, and I was not online when the problem occurred.
If anyone can help with this problem I would greatly appreciate it. I am totally lost.

This issue may occur when the following situations are true:
1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SvcHost was with wrong permissions
2. The Windows Firewall was enabled and wrong configured.
At this point, please grand proper permission on the registry key and disable Windows firewall to check the result.

In earlier versions of Windows it was possible to display the name of each driver when booting by enabling the "OS Boot Information" option (also known as the /sos switch on versions of Windows which used boot.ini).
On Windows 8, this option still exists, but enabling it does not have any effect: the booting still displays the Windows 8 logo and spinning circle, even with this option enabled.  Is there any way to work around this?

A:"OS Boot Information" (/sos) option in Windows 8 has no effect

change the bootmangaer to the old one:

bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy legacy

Now try to add the SOS flag.
