I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi, I'd try reinstalling the amd/intel switchable graphics software package on the link below as it mentions a fix related to the f2/f3 keys. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp74501-75000/sp74717.exe When this has completed, restart the notebook. Regards, DP-K

Using the laptop on battery, when I press on F11-12, the brightness meter is shown on the upper left like usual, but it won't move up or down.  Yet I think it's strange that all other places I can adjust brightness are fine, and especially strange that everything is working totally fine on AC power.
I tried uninstalling the Generic PnP monitor and reinstalling, but to no results.  Also, both my power settings on battery and on power indicate no adaptive brightness.

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium
64-bit
Windows 7 pre-installed
CPU: Intel Core i3 380M
Motherboard: Dell Inc. 07FXP8
Graphics: Generic PnP Monitor ([email protected]) on Intel HD Graphics
Dell Inspiron N5040

Beginning today, I opened my laptop from sleep and noticed the display was at its lowest brightness setting. I then tried to restart it to see if that would solve it, no luck. I did some googling and found out it could be a problem with the graphics driver. I then disabled it and enabled it. Now the brightness is at its max settings.

The function (FN) + F4, F5 (the keys to adjust the brightness settings) do nothing. The brightness status will show up on the screen and only change 1 or 2 notches.

I then realized I should have a way to adjust the brightness via the Power Settings in the Control Panel. I even confirmed this with a friend. I should have the sliders to adjust the brightness but I do not. It's very strange.

This is the screenshot from my friend:

Hello,Having a problem with my laptop keyboard where the hotkey function buttons have suddenly stopped working as they used to. Pressing any of the hot keys results in an f1-12 rather than the previous function of changing volume, toggling keyboard lights and changing brightness etc. This happened around the time of me installing some new drivers for an audio interface so may be related to that. Ive tried going into the BIOS and toggling the hotkey option on and off, and installing hp quick launch software but nothing has worked so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks in advance - C. If you are looking for some assistance, you will need to identify your notebook with its complete product number. Otherwise, we really can't help you. When logged into Windows. Hold down the Fn key and tap the Esc key. That will invoke a system information window. Post the product number seen there.   You posted this in the desktop section.  You own a notebook. I seen all the past replies on fixing this problem. One even said HP enables the keys f1-f12 eventually. Even so, I brought this notebook just last Christmas '15.  Here's the rub,  Microsoft installed some updates recently, since then the f2 & f3 for bbrightness are the only f-keys enabled. Not all users are young, these keys are a must for seniors who are on computers and eyes aren't what they use to be. I even downloaded the driver again for this and still not workng. Should I take it back to store? Still under warrenty.

I have a Dell Inspiron 5555 that I purchased today from the Microsoft Store.  The computer works great, but I've noticed that when I try to change the brightness using the brightness keys (F11 and F12) to adjust the brightness, they don't work.  I did get it to brighten up the screen once, but after doing that, I have been unable to make any changes.  Has anyone seen this and does anyone know something I can do or try to see if I can make these keys work?

A:Brightness Keys not working

The F keys toggle between Media and normal functions by using the FN key. Try using the FN key with the brightness F key--which is not necessarily F11 or F12. Check your manual. The sun symbols on the Function keys might tell you where the brightness settings are. On my model it is F3 & 4.

You can reverse the toggle settings to make the function you use most the default. The default doesn't use the FN key.

A:brightness keys are not working

HP does not post Windows 8 drivers for that laptop just 7 and 10. Check device manager and see what is showing for display adapter. If it is Microsoft Basic brightness adjustment will not work. I suspect you need quite a few drivers for it which we are going to have to help you get from hardware manufacturer sites.  Post back with identity of display adapter.

The key was not working and I tried using f3 which is not wokring. All the rest of the keys are working. For resolutions, I tried to verify my drivers (Display drivers - Radeon (TM) HD 8670M and all the other ones). All the drivers are up to date still the issue persists. I have the strangest problem... When on battery (and only when on battery) my screen brightness keys (f2, f3) don't work. When I press them, the popup appears in the top left, but it won't move up or down with the keys. Using the touchscreen or a mouse I can drag it and it does indeed adjust the brightness. When plugged in to charge, the keys work as they would normally. I have tried disabling and enabling the "Generic PnP Monitor" device as well as reinstalling graphics and chipset drivers. I also tried changing the power profile and obviously restarting. Any ideas?

Hi, I recently completely cleared my laptop and re-installed Windows 7 due to a virus. I am having issues with my brightness and volume control buttons on the keyboard. The brightness buttons do not work at all and there is no option to adjust the brightness via the power options either. My laptop is stuck on the highest setting. The volume buttons seem to adjust the volume appropriately, but the icon that typically appears in the middle of my screen when I do so is not there (the grey volume icon that appears when you use the f9 and f10 buttons and fades away shortly after). Additionally, the mute botton also seems to work but the red light on the f11 key does not respond accordingly, I only know it works from the volume icon on my taskbar.  I had some help from Paul Tikkanen in downloading several missing drivers for various other issues so I'm wondering if this is also a poblem that can be solved with a similar download? If not, is anyone able to suggest other solutions?  Thank you, Kristen

Hello, I have a HP Notebook PC - 15-r213ns (ENERGY STAR) with windows 8.1 Last night, after a windows update, the hotkeys for brightness (F2 and F3) the volume (F7 and F8), wifi (F12) and all the other ones have stopped working.  I can still change the brightness and volume through windows but i cant do it anymore using the keys. The functions keys do work, like F5 refresh or F3 browse. I have noticed that before i had to press the FN key for this and now it does it without the FN + Fx, so i suppose the windows update must have changed somthing here. They used to work fine before the update. I have re-installed the display drivers (NVIDIA G-FORCE 820-M) and looked for new drivers or updated drivers using HP Support asistant but everything is up to date. I was looking for hot key drivers in the HP drivers page for my product but couldnt find any keyboard, hotkeys related software or drivers. any suggestions? thanks in advance, Marco

Hi, Marco: The System Event Utility is supposed to get the Fn keys to work. Details: This package contains the HP System Event Utility for supported notebook models running a supported operating system. HP System Event Utility enables special function keys to be programmed. File name: sp70439.exe You can find this file under the Software - Solutions section of the driver page for your model.

Hi, Try the following. Download the graphics installer on the following link and save it to your Downloads folder. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp72001-72500/sp72370.exe When complete, download and reinstall the Chipset driver on the following link. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp69501-70000/sp69575.exe When the Chipset installation has completed, do not restart as prompted - instead, open your Downloads folder, right click on the graphics installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation. When this has completed, shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter. Start the notebook and let Windows fully load for a few minutes before checking if the f2/f3 buttons function. Regards, DP-K
