Touchpad Freezes/Touchpad opens Start Menu when I don't want it to.

Q: Touchpad Freezes/Touchpad opens Start Menu when I don't want it to.

Hello,

#1 For some reason my touchpad on my HP 15 (2015 model with 8.1, now upgraded to Windows 10 1511) freezes. I hate that when it happens, you cant use it for 20 or 30 seconds or so. I close my lid and open it back up and it works normal, but then after a little bit it starts doing it again. My driver is up to date, I think it maybe Synaptics? If I need to give more info, please say!

#2: When I scroll on my touchpad up words it opens the start menu every so often when I am scrolling a lot, but when I didn't even open or even get near it or press Windows key. What is causing this? I hate it when it does this and screws up my readings then it stops scrolling and focuses more on the start menu then I have to click out of the menu and go back to what ever I was doing.

Thanks!

Preferred Solution: Touchpad Freezes/Touchpad opens Start Menu when I don't want it to.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Windows 10 Start Menu opens randomly But I'm Not Using Touch Pad.While reading information on internet or playing a game app or whatever, the Start menu will open. The mouse icon is usually over on the left side of screen (far away from Start Icon) and my hands are not touching keyboard. The notebook is only about 1 1/2 months old. It's been doing this since new. How do I shut down this "feature" down?

My X1 Carbon (4th gen) runs Windows 10 (64-bit). When I click the middle TrackPoint button to scroll (with the red TrackPoint mouse), I am able to scroll, but this always opens the Windows start/search menu. If the cursor is far enough to the right of the screen, I can scroll just fine with the Start menu open, but I would like to disable whatever it is that is making the middle button open the start menu. Thanks

I just bought my Yoga 710 earlier today. I been using it since, and I've noticed the every time I click on the touchpad (right or left), Cortana opens up. Its at the point where I can't even close my pages or actually press anything because every time I click, it goes to the help bar with Cortana. I've tried turning Cortana off, but it will still open up the help bar each time I click. Is there a way to fix this?  *Also, I can still select things (click on them) without Cortana opening up, but I can only do this if I gently tap on the touchpad. It's very aggravating that I can't actually click it to select anything.

Hi, I am having a problem with my touchpad and Windows 10.  It started yesterday after my computer was frozen after startup and I couldn't access the login screen, so I reset my PC and kept my files.  After resetting and getting back to the desktop I found that If I either tap on the touchpad or do a quick swipe on the touchpad, Windows Action Center will pull up every time and I have to tap or swipe again for it to go away.  I never had the problem before resetting my PC and after speaking with Microsoft they claim it is a malfunction of the touchpad.  I've been searching online and see suggestions to disable 4 finger gestures to resolve the issue, however my laptop does not have 4 finger gestures.  I have reinstalled the driver for the touchpad and still have the issue.  I'm at a loss.Anyone familiar with this issue?  It has become increasingly frustrating and I'm hoping there's a solution.  Thanks!

I have purchase multiple xps 13 and inspiron 13 laptops and observe the same issues.  I tend to use the touch pad with my right hand's index finger, and click the touchpad button with my left hand's index finger.  It's a quick way to get things done.  Many in my organization do this, too and have been running into problems.
However, quite frequently (but not all the time) when I click the button with my left hand the cursor jumps to another location on the screen.  Frequently this is the lower-left corner of the screen, but sometimes it is the upper right, too. This causes different windows to come into focus, or it activates the start menu.  Really , really annoying, and it happens on both laptop models.  Our previous Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro and Acer laptops did not have this issue.
I think this has to do with the touch pad thinking that the user has two fingers on the touch pad and moves the cursor thinking the finger jumped around the pad.  Otherwise the gestures and movement of the touchpad is fine.
Is this a known issue to Dell?  It's really aggravating and other users in my organization are complaining as well.  I may need to return the lot (3 XPS 13, 5 Inspiron 13 machines ) and look at different hardware.

Hello,

I have a Dell Latitude D630 laptop that has issues. Sometimes the touchpad works, and sometimes it doesn't. I've noticed when it doesn't work, the icon in the tray has disappeared or never booted up to begin with. Sometimes it boots up and sometimes it just doesn't even boot up to the tray at all. And at other times, it does.
(Along with this, maybe it's just a coincidence, but I've been working on this for days and days but when the touchpad doesn't work, the keyboard acts up too!) This might have nothing to do with it at all.

I've done a complete reformat of the hard drive, installed Win XP Professional, reinstalled drivers over and over. Been to the Dell website and have all the newest drivers.
When I reinstall the touchpad drivers, it does work once again, but this seems to be short lived.
The laptop is 4 years old...seems strong otherwise, can handle multiple tasks fairly well, has a dual core installed.
I can't figure it out.
Can anyone help?

Thank you!!
Pam

We just got a Dell XPS-15z, and, we have questions about scrolling on the Cypress touchpad using the Cypress drivers.

When scrolling down (either one finger or 2 fingers), when you hit the bottom of the touchpad, is there any way for the scrolling to continue without your having to lift your finger(s) back to the top of the touchpad? On other Dell laptops, I have Chiral motion, or the scrolling continues so long as your finger is at the bottom of the touchpad? I tried enabling the "Continued Motion" option just in case that was what did it, but that did not seem to work.

Which brings up another question re what "Continued Motion" does.

Also, is there any manual/help document for this driver either on the internet, or in the software itself?

I looked on the forum and on the internet, and couldn't find any answers.

TIA.

Haven't updated your laptop's trackpad driver lately? Then you may well want to consider doing so, at least if your laptop is equipped with a Synaptics trackpad. As a user on the Hardware Zone forums discovered, the latest Synaptics driver seems to enable multitouch gestures on older laptops that didn't previously support them, including two-finger scrolling, and three-finger click. What's more, while the drivers themselves come from HP, they should work just fine on other laptops with a Synaptics trackpad. Hit up the link below to try it out for yourself.

Hello, I tried to upgrade to windows 8 and found that the touchpad became super sensitive and jumpy. Reading online I found a firmware that claimed to fix the issue and found it on HPs Support site. Mid install, it reported that it failed and forced a reboot on the laptop. When it was back up and running I found that the touchpad no longer worked. Its exactly the same issue as in these links: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Software-and-How-To-Questions/Touchpad-Not-Working-After-Faile... http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-System-and-Recovery/Touchpad-Firmware-Failed/td-p/23... I've tried to reflash and to get new drivers but they are not able to go through. The drivers install but don't fix anything. The flashing will quit saying I need drivers first even though I have them.  I've even reformated and put the factory windows 7 image back on but it still will not work. The solutions posted in the above links didnt work for me.  Does anyone have any idea on how I can fix this?

Hello Everyone,

My problem started after updating windows 8.1 to windows 10, of course!
First the touchpad just stopped working, for no reason.

My solution was to uninstall the drive and restart the laptop. And from time to time I had to do this proceed. Two weeks ago windows updated, and the touchpad issue's gone. . Unfortunately, another one appeared.

The feature "mousekey", which is turn it on at ease access to use the numeric keys to use them as a mouse, It's turning itself on. And doesn't matter how many times I turn it off, few seconds and it's on again.

I've tried uninstalling the drive, which after windows the last updating was "ELAN".

Then I replaced by the Toshiba drivers, which is "Synaptic", and uninstalled the drives ,the problem is the same. Because of that, I can't use my numeric key, which is annoying!! If anyone can come up with something I will be grateful.

This is pretty much the basis of my problem and it happens in that order always. I got a new HP Probook 4530s less than a year ago and have barely used it because of this annoying problem. I'll be on the web doing my thing and just using the arrow keys to scroll up and down a page. After some time, the arrow keys will just stop working so then I'll go to the scroll bar. Next my touchpad will start highlighting everything no matter where I tap and then any links I click will open up in a new window. I've even attached a USB mouse and get the same results with the highlighting and new windows. The browser I typically use is Firefox. I loathe Internet Explorer.

I just can't seem to figure out why it's doing this. It updates itself almost every boot and is fine otherwise.

Any ideas?

Hello, i have a problem with my hp zbook 15u g3.When i am using the touchpad and press any key on the keyboard it will interrupt the touch on the touchpad. So i looked around the internet and i am now pretty sure it's something called "Palm check" in synaptics. So i opened Mouse settings and found 2 tabs for synaptics. Under the TouchPad tab there is only one button though.Spoiler (Highlight to read)So i click the button and get into that stupid Windows 10 Settings app **bleep** where i found a setting for accidental click while typing. So i set it to "Always on", but that ofcourse did nothing.Spoiler (Highlight to read)So i continue to look around and then i find something that says "More alternatives", so i click it.Spoiler (Highlight to read)And guess where that takes me.. Back to picture one! Everywhere i look on the internet for solutions i only find people saying that you should open the settings menu. But nowhere do i find anything about not even having that menu! So yeah im pretty tired of this crap now, i've spent hours upon hours trying to find some kind of settings menu (I even looked in the registry!) and trying different versions of the driver and all that stuff. Help please? It says the driver version is 19.0.19.18. I downloaded it from the hp support page for this computer. There are no other problems with any input device, i can use the wierd knob in the middle of the keyboard fine too. What do i do?

So if you thought your new shiny Yoga had a bad touchpad, it may not be the touchpad at all! My Yoga 720 15.6 was acting really strange where every so often using the touchpad wouldnt work, and trying to use the keyboard wouldnt work at all. I first thought it was a touchpad issue but realized that this is a system wide issue. Something is causing Windows to start hitching. I turned off Adaptive Brightness in Power settings and the problem has gone away! I had a hunch it was this when I noticed the adaptive brightness was doing its job of gradually changing the brightness but looked like it was lagging while it was dimming/brightening itself. Lenovo Support: Please address this problem through any channels necessary because I want Adaptive Brightness but right now I have to have it disabled in order to use Windows without any hitches.

I had to send my Dell Inspiron 1420 off to get the Nvidia Chip replace. They pulled the mother board and fixed it and reinstalled it. When I got it back I had to reload the HD with W7-64 due to wiping it thinking that was the problem instead of the chip. It had XP before if that matters. Now my touchpad will work briefly then freezes for a couple seconds then works for a couple then freezes again. I've tried reloading everything. I tried it in safe mode. When I boot to my W7 cd it seems to work. I've tried running the cd and letting it repair anything it wants but it doesn't help. Maybe they screwed something up fixing the Nvidia chip?? Any ides? Thanks.

A:touchpad freezes

Your problem is Dell only supports xp and 32 bit vista - Drivers & Downloads

If your W7 DVD has both 64bit and 32 bit i would advice you to install 32bit W7 then you could use the 32bit drivers on the above link - this is where it sends me when i click on w7 (below) and then when i click on drivers under table of contents it returns you to the first link. In step 3 it says use vista drivers which will work if you can install w7 32 bit - link:

Looking for Windows 7 Drivers? | Dell Asia Pacific

You may need to install some drivers in compatibility mode if they wont install normally - use windows update firstly:

To install a driver/program in compatibility mode - right click the setup.exe file - click properties - click compatibility - check run in compatibility with vista/etc - check run as administrator - leave the rest blank. Start setup.exe and install.

On the other hand you might find a 64 bit compatible driver by just entering its name eg (more details if possible) need a touchpad 64bit driver for my Dell inspiron 1420 in bing or google search.

I was jsut wondering if anybody knew what caused this problem and if they do, if there were any quick fixes towards it.

A:Touchpad Freezes

Go to the HP driver support for your model and get the latest drivers for the touch-pad.
You might have to find out who makes that touch-pad and get it from the manufacturer
Or see if there is Windows update for it.
Did you update to Windows 8.1 yet?
Also there are known issues with Windows 8 and some touch-pads know working correctly.

I recently did a factory restore using the discs that came with my HP laptop. Since doing this my mouse feezes during the booting up process. I tried uninstalling the synaptics touchpad driver and letting Windows install its generic mouse driver. It still does not work after about 15 seconds into the booting process. The only thing that has changed since I took it out of the box (a couple years ago) is that the motherboard was swapped about 5 months ago. Prior to the factory disc fomat and install the touchpad worked fine. I usually keep an optical mouse with me as it is easier to use but, now I only have that as my only option. The laptop is a HP Pavillion ze4240. I have a seperate problem with my wireless card which is why I tried the factory setup. Did not fix that either.

I've put this under "hardware", but I suspect it's not the correct place. If a better forum could be used please advise.
I've spent hours and hours searching the web, including techsupportguy, but I cannot find any clue that leads me to an answer. I would love some help!!
My vanilla-flavour Gateway laptop (XP) works perfectly - until I print more than 1 or two pages on the HP All-in-one. Some time during the printing process the touchpad freezes; well, almost - the cursor moves a mm or two and bounces back to almost where it came from. I have waited and waited for it to cure itself but it never does. The only solution is to close and restart.

I have experimented by keeping the printer turned off and simply letting the OS spool waiting for the printer. All is fine until I turn the printer on - it prints and then the cursor freezes again. I can normally print one page OK, and after a while print another. Sometimes the problem occurs with just one page, so I suspect that the problem is caused by the amount of data going to the printer rather than the number of pages.

A:Solved: touchpad freezes after printing

I should also have said the following: when the cursor freezes the tray icon for the touchpad constantly shows that the touchpad is being touched even though it isn't. I am just not technical enough to begin to guess how printing can interfere with (to me) a seemingly unconnected peripheral.

Nothing helped sofar.Reading the pages here I see there are many others with same problem and seems like there is no solution since late 2014. This is my 5th Acer since 2005 and until last one Aspite 1830T i had before i always was very satisfied, but problems started with the 1830T. In this case, you are advised to reinstall touchpad drivers for your model and check if that works. To download the latest drivers, you can follow the steps below:1. Go to http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/drivers2. Type Aspire V3-112P in the box below "Search by Product Model" and click "Search".3. Once your product details are displayed, go to "Driver" tab.4. Click "Download" besides your touchpad drivers and follow on-screen instructions to download and install the same. Hope this will help you.

I understand that your touchpad will freeze.

Do a hard reset.
Turn the computer off.
Remove the power cable and the battery.
Hold down the power button for 15 sec while booth power sources are removed.

This should reset the hardware in the computer.

As you power it back on tap the F2 key. This will load hardware diagnostics.
Run the startup test.

This will test all the hardware in the system and detect any problems.

If the entire test passes, turn off the computer.
As you turn it back on tap the F10 key. This will load BIOS setup utility.
Press F9 to load defaults.
Press F10 to save and exit.

When the computer boots back up, check to see if everything is working.

Hi there,

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-NR38E_S and the touchpad freezes when recharging and battery is full, it's a pain to keep switching to charge and back because the touchpad won't function when AC has fully charged battery until I unplug AC from laptop or power supply.

Is there a way to fixing this or is it a glitch in the laptop?

Thanks

I have v18.x.x.x and it allows me to disable the touchpad when a mouse dongle is plugged in. But, if you look on HP or Synaptics, the v17 is the download as of 1/16/16. Where can we get the "REAL" drivers from? The synaptics site is very vague about what is in the zip file. They have a new CEO - maybe he will help get things worked out. Meanwhile, I'm looking for the v18 drivers and see that you have v19? Where are these drivers available?

Dell 2-in-1 3147:
The "DELL Pointing Devices" dialog shows a "Disable Touchpad when USB Mouse Present" checkbox. If this checkbox is clear, the touchpad works properly. When this checkbox is marked, the touchpad does not work at all.
I have tried both USB and Bluetooth mice, and neither one allows the proper action: the touchpad should be enabled without a mouse, and the touchpad should be disabled with a mouse.  That's how it works on other systems.  It just doesn't work at all on this system.
I suspect there is some interaction between the touchpad and the touchscreen that is interfering with this setting.  But I have another laptop with a touchpad and a touchscreen, and the mouse detection works there (it's not a DELL).
Yes, I have toyed with the idea of deleting the DELL touchpad control application and installing a "stock" Synaptics touchpad driver.  But I don't want the DELL  "update" app to overwrite it with the DELL touchpad control app every time it sees "the wrong driver" loaded.  And I don't want to take the chance that the touchpad driver and the touchscreen driver are somehow linked together, thus disabling one when I disable the other.
Any ideas on how to get the "Disable Touchpad when USB Mouse Present" action working would be welcome.

Good morning, I've entered dozens of websites trying to figure out how to change this. If i'm pressing any button on the keyboard, the touchpad freezes. My OS is windows 10 home, the notebook is the ideapad 310 15ISK, i've tried to go into sinaptics conf of the touchpad, but there isn't the menu as there are in others notebooks, there are only a few options about rotation, zoom, scrolling, movements with multiple fingers etc. I noticed that on the configurations of the system there is an option where I select the delay of the touchpad after typing, and I've chose no delay, so after less than 2 secs it comes back to normal, but it still freezes while typing, and I'd really like to change that. How can I do that?Oh, and I believe it's worth mentioning that I'm from Brazil. I've put a print from the configs.By the way, there is this bar... "Controle da palma" that would mean "Palmcheck", but it is disabled... I belive it would solve this situation, how could I manage to turn it on??

Just got this laptop - touchpad freezes intermittently, the arrow keys andother keys still work - but not the touchpad. Very irritating. Also, the Laptop will restart without warning - randomly. Besides potential loss of work, it's impacting my work. Help, please.
