Sound icon missing/no sound w98se

Q: Sound icon missing/no sound w98se

sys win98se
m/b amd k7 athlon Box also says Aopen

Hi,

There is no sound (except sys beep) working on my computer. Sound icon is missing. Looked at sound help links. In bios there is no place that i can see to be sure enable is on. I see no place in all the setup area where sound is listed or anything like that.

In deleting sound card, (getting exclamation pt), says PCI multimedia device found - and then i try to load drivers, but i don't know what sound card i have. I've tried lots of different drivers. But i feel that the sound icon missing is causing the underlying problems.

(I just started using this system after not using for a few years.) Last time I used it, somehow I got the sound to work.

Some have suggested is AMD problem, but when i go to that site, it offers 3 categories of m/b's.
AMD Athlon 64™ Processor
AMD Opteron™ Processor
AMD Athlon™ XP, AMD Athlon™ & AMD Duron™ Processors

I chose the last one (?) and downloaded the one that checks drivers, and on running, it says, failed to find any components.

On Accessories/sys tool/sys info/components:
PCI Multimedia Audio Device
Unknown
This Device Has a Problem: Code=28 (0x1C)
The drivers for this device are not installed correctly. To install the driver for this device, click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver.

Any help you can give me to get sound working is appreciated.

Thanks, ganaan

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi, first of I love your website here and everybody is so helpful (I posted here about a year back and I got help right away )

Anyways, I've been having this problem where my sound icon won't appear in the system tray. When this happens I can't adjust the sound using the buttons on my laptop either. I can usually fix this problem by doing a system restore to a week or two ago, but it seems like everytime I restart my computer I get this problem again (I usually just put my computer on standby). I wasn't having this problem for a while because I never turned off my computer (standby ) but I just got a random BSOD while watching a youtube video and when I restarted my computer the same problem occured (no sound icon in system tray and I can't adjust sound with buttons on laptop). I've tried many different things, from simple stuff like going into the control panel and checking "show sound icon in tray" to stuff like editing the registry (I tried googling how to fix this problem). Well I've had this problem for about half a year, and I'm officially sick of it . If any of you know how to fix this I would GREATLY appreciate it! Thanks in advance!

A:sound icon missing

First of I would check Device Manager to make sure there are no yellow exclamation marks in the sounds section. If there are then you need to update your sound card drivers.

In control panel - sounds there should be a checkbox to display the sound icon in the systray. Its its not enabled to tick it then again you need to sort out your sound card drivers first then go back and put a tick in the box.

Hi all,

This problem has really got the better of me, the little sound icon (speaker) is missing from the systems tray, I have checked in control panel - sound and audio devices - place volume icon in taskbar is ticked, also when trying to open the volume properties (IE: start - programs - accessories - entertainemt - volume control) I get an error saying the required application is not installed????? I un-installed/re-installed my sound driver/software, still no luck....
Even performed a windows repair install....no luck....when trying to open the calculator, I get the same error,I un-installed/re-installed the device from device manager - no luck, the sound is working on the machine, just would like to control the volume using the icon in sys tray.....any ideas

A:Sound Icon missing from Sys Tray

Hi craiglee

Usually the missing taskbar applet is due to a problem with the sound drivers installation, as you've already suspected. Most drivers either use the standard "sndvol32.exe" built into WinXP, or provide their own, customized tray applet.

Try booting into Safe Mode & removing all your sound drivers while in there. Then reinstall your sound - cancel the New Hardware found when XP re-detects, and try the proprietary drivers from your audio vendors website. --- Another option would be to simply do a "Search" of your hard drive for "sndvol32.exe" and create a shortcut to it, then place that shortcut in the Startup folder.

The Calculator should work, unless you've had some strange mischief going on in your system files. A quickie workaround would be to use the PowerToys version http://www.theeldergeek.com/windows_xp_power_toys.htm

Did you have to clean any malware from the system recently?

After a recent issue I had with my computer being unable to boot Windows from the Hard Disk, I noticed that my sound icon, as well as a few other system notification icons weren't displaying on my Task Bar anymore.

I have learned how to bring them back up for the duration that the computer is powered on, but any restarts or shut downs require me to have to take these steps against and it's getting quite bothersome.

I have been opening Regedit via start/run and deleting registry entries for the Icons at HKEY_CURRENT_USER/SOFTWARE/CLASSES/LOCAL SETTINGS/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/WINDOWS/CURRENTVERSION/TRAYTONIFY and the specific keys being "IconStreams" and "PastIconStream". After that, closing explorer.exe and restarting it with the Task Manager brings up my desktop with the once missing icons.

I have found I have to do it that way, because trying to access them through the Control Panel's Notification Area Icons doesn't work and the option for "Turn system icons on or off" has these icon buttons completely grey'd out from use altogether.

These were working before my computer's near death experience, but I am unsure how to cure this "sickness" now.
Does anyone out there perhaps have a remedy for this problem? One that I won't have to continue to do everytime I boot up my computer.

A:Continual Missing Sound Icon

IMO..since you have been making registry edits and whatever else you have done...I suggest a repair install of Win 7, after ensuring that your problems don't stem from system overheating or a troubled hard drive.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.
 Checkmark the following checkboxes:  List last 10 Event Viewer log  List Installed Programs  List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
 Click Go and paste the content into your next post.
 Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic323892.html/page__p__1797792#entry1797792 , taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

When you go into the control panel the icon marked sound is NOT THERE?? correct? and its not on taskbar? hold the windows logo key and the R key and type into the box devmgmt.msc and advise us what is listed next to the sound and video controllers. (you will have to expand the listing via the + sign to its left) Also advise if there is ANY yellow triangles or exclamation points on ANY of the other devices. Hello to all. I hope that someone can help me out with the sound problems that I am having on my computer. I've tried searching the site, but nothing came up which pertained specifically to my problem.

Recently, after my computer boots up, I get the following message:

SB AWE32 MIDI Synth Cannot load default synthesizer bank
**Read error in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SYNTHGM.SBK**

Along with that, the little speaker icon in the system tray is missing. This just started happening a couple of days ago after my son was viewing a video clip on one of the sites he goes too. He said that when he went to turn the volume down, the speaker icon disappeared.

I've gotten the above message before on rare occasion and I've never had problems with the sound. But this time around, the sound is acting a little funny. Sometimes it sounds fine, sometimes it sounds distorted and full of static. Sometimes the above mentioned message appears when I start up, and sometimes it doesn't. But regardless, my volume icon is still missing.

I would appreciate it so much if someone could help me work this problem out. Many thanks in advance!

Also, I am running Windows 98SE.

Hello:

I recently had a lot of nasty stuff on my pc. After cleaning all the bad stuff off the pc I ran into another problem that I think I have partially fixed. I had no system sounds at startup or shutdown and no volume control icon in the taskbar. I could however hear sound through media player. I found the following fix in another forum which seems to have fixed the windows system sound problem. I can control the sound volume through control panel but the tray icon is missing and I can not get it back. Also the volume control buttons on the laptop itself do not seem to be functioning. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Bob

Here is the fix:-

Start -> Run and enter 'regedit' or 'regedit.exe' (obviously without the quotes) - This will bring up the registry editor

Follow the left path to:
My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32

On the right pane, right click and click on New, select String value, enter 'wavemapper', press ENTER

Then right-click on 'wavemapper', select modify, and type 'msacm32.drv' into the Value Data field.

Close the registry editor.

A:Missing Sound Icon on Taskbar gone after various viruses

G'day Bob,

There are a couple of ways to rectify this pesky critter (the Volume Icon) misbehaving, so lets try these two Steps....

(You will need your Windows? XP CD)

Insert the Windows? XP CD in the Drive. (Hold down the Shift Key to prevent it from starting)....

STEP One:
Now go Start > Run and enter these commands....(hit Enter after each command.)

cmd

Enter your CD/DVD Drive letter (I will use E: for this exercise.)

E:

cd i386

expand sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe

(Please note the space between the ex_ and the c:)

Once you hit enter this time you will notice that the file will be 'expanded by an amount of about 145%'.

When it is finished, type exit; remove the CD.

STEP Two:

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.
2. Click Services and Applications.
3. Double-click Services.
4. Scroll down in the Services list, right-click SSDP Discovery Service, and then click Properties.
5. On the General tab, in the Startup type drop-down list, click Disabled.
6. Click OK.

Close all windows and reboot the computer.

Upon restart, all should now be normal (hopefully).

Post back with the results, and if there are any other queries/concerns.

Kind Regards,

However, this computer was bought in Sept. 2001, so considering its age, I'm not even sure that drivers are even available now.

How come my network icon and sound icon just simply disappeared from the notification (task bar) when I started up my laptop using vista. I have tried to right-click on tasbar > properties > Notification Area > ... But the system icons, I means tick boxes for sound and network are grayed, and I'm unable to choose it. Are there any way to fix it, could anyone pls help me. Thanks

A:Missing network and sound icon in notification area HELP HELP

Vista (and XP to some extent) has had problems with disappearing icons and shaded icon selection boxes for some time now. The area on the bottom right of the screen in which they are located is called the Notification Area (System Tray/systray in XP). The icons are similar to shortcuts. However, shortcuts can generally be found somewhere in your folders and are easily edited. Not the Notification Area icons. They are in Vista's cache. A cache is a consortium of executed commands & programs or accessed files that the system has determined are utilized more frequently than others. In Vista, this frequency-of-use is what Superfetch tries to learn about you, the user. These executables and files are loaded into the cache where the CPU can fetch (access) them must faster than it can calling for them from main memory. There is a level-1 and a level-2 cache in Vista. It's all about resource management.

There are reported solutions to your problem, however, I must tell you that I have found these to be temporary at best. So many times, after reboot, cold boot, or logoff/logon, I have found an icon(s) missing. Under one user account, I have never been able to recover the network icon.

If you are comfortable using REGEDIT to edit the system's registry, here is a link that explains the icon recovery/cleanup process very well:

Very helpful threads from others on the same problem I recently encountered, to date. I picked up some useful leads on restoring or re-doing the icon in the sys tray; but is there anyone that knows of way to restore it without the need or having to have the CD rom to do it?

I don't remember if I unticked or unloaded one of the components in that check list among the add/remove programs, but each and every time I go to tick the box under the properties of putting it or showing it up in the notification area it bams me with the message that the volume icon needs to be added to add/remove programs in control panel (oh yeah, but which one and how can I be directed more specifically because as I go there, there's no from that checkpoint, where to go next (?)) @Oldphartster Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! I find it highly unlikely that any desktop would have additional internal speakers.  The speaker that is there is not really for listening to music; instead, it is a hold over from older days when PCs emitted "beeps" to indicate hardware failures. Any speaker for a desktop is going to plug into a stereo audio jack (light green) on the back of the unit.  There is also likely to be an earphone jack on the front of the unit. Here is the HP product page, drivers and software, that I could find for the HP CD5800 Microtower PC:  http://h20565.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/readIndex?sp4ts.oid=3658084&swLangOid=8&swEnvOid=4059 I don't know what version of Win7 you are running, so you will have to select that using the pulldown. Then when you get the driver page, download the ADI driver under Drivers- Audio. When you install that and reboot, the red x should vanish and you should have audio.Good Luck

I recently installed a new Logitech G930 headset on my Win 7 x64 system. It has had problems from the beginning. The problem is the Sound Control will not open when you try to. It is definitely related to the G930 software as if I uninstall it everything is back to normal. At times it may take many minutes and eventually open up . Leads me to indicate it is trying to open, but it is hung up. I may open a webpage or something and then it will open. Seem to be a hangup issue.

What I have done-

Installed the software 3 different times. Same result each time
Clean boot- Same result.

I have been around the block on this one with Logitech support. No success. I really don't want to return these, but if this continues I will have to.

Does anyone have any pointers?

Sounds like a corruption between Windows and the keyboard drivers. Go to the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the entry for the keyboard and then LEFT click "uninstall" (this assumes you do not have a password to enter to get into Windows when you boot up). Then restart the PC (your mouse will still work) and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the Keyboard.

If this does not fix it, the keyboard may be faulty. You can post on the Dell Community Desktop Hardware section and maybe someone there has some additional advice. Desktop General Hardware Forum - Desktop - Dell Community

hello everyone,
sorry my 1st post is a request for help,

i have a hp dv6000 laptop, with vista os on it;
which was working fine, until yesterday, when i plugged in my audio cable,
and the other end of it in a small guitar amp lol;
i did that many times before when i wanted to listen to music, to enhance the sound quality;
there was no problem before;
now yesterday there was, for some reason there was no sound while a song was running;
i checked everything so far, nothing changed, then i finally unplugged it(and i don't think i've damaged the jack)
nothing, no sound;
after a while searching for the problem and checking the h/w devices, which seemed to be having no error, i uninstalled the sound driver and reinstalled it back again/i used the one from hp;
i also read on their website that sometimes the pavillion has a problem with the audio jack?
before i did the driver i did a system restore, and this is when even the sound icon disappeared!
after all, still NO sound icon and NO sound!:(

i have no idea what is going on;
could it be that the amp fried my sound chip?
and how can i find that out?
what would you guys do in my case?

thanks=)

Hi there,
One day when my computer shut itself off, when it re-started the bottom bar with the time etc. was grey, not the normal blue, and the sound speaker was missing. When I tried to play music it would work and it gave me an error about an audio mixer. I had gone onto downloads.com and downloaded a new driver update. That worked! The the computer got moved again and shut down, the bottom bar went grey again, and the sound won't work again, the speaker is also missing again. I downloaded the driver again but this time it won't work.

I have checked all my cords, when I check my properties everything says it is working.

What could be wrong?

Hi, I can't get 2-channel sound with ABIT AT7-MAX2 motherboard, integrated Realtek AC'97 sound. I've tried those drivers from www.abit.com.tw, but those ain't working neither. I have 5.1 Creative surround sound. I get sound from every speakers except the 2 channel ones, which are connected to green phohe jack (Front Speaker Out), everything is connected correctly but i just can't get no sound. The problem came after i had put my pc together into another case. Before that the sound was working. My headphones doesn't work either in that green phone jack.

Had to replace motherboard from authorized acer parts dealer now I get no sound through HDMI port. I did through the original board until it got fried by electrical surge. Can any one help or send me a picture of the inside the same model to make sure all jumpers on the motherboard are in the right spot. Or if any one else had this problem tell me how you fix it. It does not have HDMI sound icon in the mixer. What I have done:
1. I have looked for disabled devices.
2. Tried looking in sound mixer settings for the default audio.
3. New install and drivers.
4. Tried a system utility software RegInOut. Looking for serious replies on fix even if it was not an Acer.

Welcome to the Seven Forums

One thing you could try is to open up the Control panel then click on Sound and then go to the Playback tab and see if there is anything in there to enable it that's what I had to do on my laptop.

Good morning experts,

Please help me since I dont know what to do to solve this. This mornig I started my laptop, after a few minutes the wifi disconnected and the yellow dot showed on the wifi icon. I tried to click on the icon but nothing happened. Tried to click click clik and nothing happens. Tried to click on the sound icon and nothing happens. Like if they were disabled. All the other icons are working normally. I tried ending the explorer.exe and run it again from the systems administrator, after doing that when I click on the wifi it works but now shows the " x" and no connections available.

This whole thing happens every time I restart the laptop, wifi ok for a few minutes, then suddendly yellow dot and it wont let me even click on the icon.

I scanned with panda global anrivirus, malwarebytes, spybot search and destroy, everything clean.

Please help

So my computer's sound hasn't worked for a couple weeks now and I've tried everything I can think of to no avail. The sound icon is normal and it even says that there is sound coming through my speakers, but there isn't any sound coming through the headphone jack or regular speakers. At first it had the red X on the icon, but after downloading a new sound driver it seems to have fixed that. Now, I still have the same problem and I'm stumped.

My computer is a Compaq Presario V6500. I've had it for 3 years and it runs Windows Vista.

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Cheers all,

Problem is as stated in the thread; I downloaded, untar'd and set the theme up today. I know it's specifically the "Close Window" sound since it's unique from the others. I'm referring to the following actions in particular (there may be more things I could do to proc it, but I haven't checked yet)...
Opening a Program
Opening a Folder in Windows Explorer
Starting a new Windows Explorer Session
Closing a Window (expected function)
Closing a Windows Explorer Session (expected function)
Those not followed by (expected function) have a different sound assigned to them, although the Close Window sound plays anyways. Not always immediately after the action is performed, either - there can be anywhere from a 1 to 15 second delay before the .wav plays.

The sounds are located in C:\Windows\Media\AltimitOS\ with AltimitOS being a custom folder I copied in. I originally untar'd everything to the desktop, then created and moved everything into the folder and tried running the theme from there. I've made sure all file paths are leading to the \Media\AltimitOS folder.

Any help is appreciated. Cheers,
-Kalts.

A:Custom Sound Scheme: Close Window Sound Plays Instead of Chosen Sound

As this is a 3rd party app, it sounds like it is buggy. Does the Windows schemes work OK? If so, that puts it back to the buggy app.

I would go back to the app developer for assistance.

I have good sound with other speakers on this desktop, but I wanted to save some workspace on my desk, so I recently got a new AX510 sound bar and attached it onto a Dell 2208WFP monitor, one of the monitors listed for that soundbar.  It powers up via the AC port built in to the monitor, just like it should, and I've correctly connected the audio cable on the soundbar audio output on my desktop.  But there's no sound at all.  I did get a static "pop" once... but no other sound.
So I am trying to figure out whether the sound bar is defective, or if this is possibly a Windows 10 issue, as I've read a few odd posts on the internet about people suddenly finding that previously working sound bars don't work in Windows 10.... or some other incompatibility (my desktop is a Studio XPS 8100, Windows 10).  I realize all of my equipment is not the latest, but it's all been in great working condition and the one new addition is the sound bar... I did plug my old speakers back in again, and they still work just fine.
I was thinking I can test the sound bar by connecting it to another computer at work (tomorrow) that's running Windows 7.  to determine if it's a Windows 10 issue -- or if it just doesn't work at all -- but would that be a definitive test it's not a Dell computer?  Any other ways to diagnose the problem and pin it down?  I can conceivably still return the sound bar if I determine it's defect... Hi

I would appreciate assistance to get my sound icon back on the toolbar thing at the bottom right of my computer screen.
I got it there once but it has disappeared once again. It appears to go away after start up.
I would like it there to access the volume control easily. Any help with that would be great!

Not to too get greedy but can someone also show the steps to get to the start up programs menu to see what is going on in there?

Thanks much.
