I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello all,

I need some advice.

I recently replaced my old harddisk to a new harddisk. The old harddisk has windows xp home and other programs installed.

I did not format the old harddisk, I only took out the old harddisk and replaced it with a new harddisk. I then installed windows xp home to the new harddisk.

While I am installing programs on the new harddisk, I discovered that one of the programs do not allow me to activate the program license because I have previously activated the program on my old windows. I need to do a proper uninstallation to release the license, then I can activate the license of the program in the new harddisk.

My question is, can I take out my current new harddisk, replace it with the old harddisk, boot up as normal into the old harddisk windows, uninstall the program inside the old harddisk, then replace the old hardisk with my new harddisk again.

Will I be able to access the old windows on the old harddisk?
Will it mess up my current windows/programs settings?
Will my current new harddisk windows be able to work as normal after accessing the old harddisk windows?
I thought of accessing the old harddisk as a slave, but I do not know if it is possible to access the old harddisk and do a proper uninstall of the program?
Is there any better way of uninstalling the program on my old harddisk?

Thanks in advance.

A:Accessing Win XP on old harddisk to uninstall programs after installing new harddisk

you have to swap out the drive completely. at no time should you have both hdd plugged in.

repeat, do not run them as master and slave. run each hdd individually at each time only.........

Hi

Welcome to the bleeping computer forum

Unfortunately, intermittent issues are one of the difficult fault to troubleshoot. Please follow the below steps to collect some basic info about your system.

1 ) Generate a report about your system using Speccy by reading the guide below.

   http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/323892/publish-a-snapshot-using-speccy/

Post the web link displayed by Speccy in next reply.

2 ) Download and run Minitoolbox from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/minitoolbox/

Run the tool and only select the following tick boxes.

-List last 10 Event viewer errors
    -List installed programs
    -List devices
-List users, partition and memory size

Now click "Go" and post the output in next reply

After reading your logs, either me or any other forum volunteer will assist to you to diagnose the issue.

Edit:

Don't ever use the registry cleaning function in CCleaner or Glary utilities. Only use them to clean the temp files. Using registry cleaners may cause unpredictable damage to the registry. If anyone properly knows which registry keys are garbage, that is only Microsoft.

Hi,
My computer has been running slow, especially when I do a restart, it takes forever to restart. I went into msconfig and disabled what is in startup. Question is what do I need in startup and what can I get rid of? and how do I remove something from startup?
Also what is a good free firewall to use?
Thanks Dano

A:Computer runs faster when I disable what runs in the background?

Here is a good explanation: http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/
There are certain (and important) items that should run at Startup.

If you are unsure of some of the entries you see listed, this is a great website to research them: http://www.castlecops.com/StartupList.html
It tells you what the process is, and if it's necessary to run at Startup.

A good firewall (and free one) is Zone Alarm: http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp

Every now and then (every 5 minutes or so) my cursor will turn into the hourglass for a split second, then turn back. I'm assuming this means something is being initiated in the background periodically. Over time, this slows down my computer. At the very least, it makes me lag tremendously in online games for a few seconds (which makes CS and UT2004 pretty much unplayable).

I've tried running the latest AdAware and Spybot: Search and Destroy. Neither solved the problem. These seem like symptoms of generic spyware, but I've still been unable to put an end to it. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

(I'm using windows XP, if that makes any difference)

I have a client with a tricked out Dell xps Studio (6GB memory) who is suffering with very long times to print. Even sending a printer test page from within windows (Vista home premium 64) takes about 30 seconds before the sent notice appears on the screen. The printer is a Epson Stylus Photo1900 (large format printer). No other programs running but background stuff kept to a minimum. I have tried shutting down the spooler and printing direct, but it is slow as well.

I loaded and ran Process Explorer from Sysinternals and the only thing out of the ordinary is the constant opening, running and ending of dllhost.exe. This occurs every few seconds and lasts only for a few seconds.

I know there are discussions in posts elsewhere in the forums of the possible impostor DLLHOST.EXE, and when I left the client's I had set MS Security Essentials to run a full scan to see if it would find anything, but I have not yet been to see the results.

Does anyone else have any ideas on this?

I have two external hard drives, both in Vantec NexStar3 USB enclosures. The older 750 GB WDC Green drive runs HOT to the touch, the 4 TB, and the 2 TB before that, run pretty warm but never hot.

Why might this be, and would that much heat cause earlier than necessary drive failure?

A:WDC Green: 750 GB runs Hot, 4 TB runs Cool ???

Hi there,

The WD Green drives should be working up to 60 degrees Celsius, which could feel really hot to the touch. The older model of the drive might be working on higher temperatures that the newer, but should not exceed those 60 degrees. I advise you install some monitoring software to determinate the exact working temperature. If you have the option, check if the drive is running hot when used without the enclosure.
If a drive works hotter than expected, this may be an indicator of an ongoing issue and, yes, might lead to an unexpected drive failure. My advice: measure the exact temperature and do regular backups.
In the links below you will find the spec sheets of the different WD Green models, where you can check temperatures:

Not sure whether I'm putting this question in the right spot but here goes. I have a laptop running XP. Today when I tried to boot it up it told me my memory had changed and prompted me to press F1 to continue. I did and it started to boot Windows but then gave me message "One of your discs needs to be checked for consistency." I let it go ahead and it went through a 3 stage process -
1) Verifying files - it said complete
2) Verifying indexes - It corrected an error in Index $SII for file 9
3) Verifying security descriptors - On this last check after a while it started multiple messages of the type " Inserting index entry xxxx with ID yyyy into Index $zzz of file 9." There were hundreds of these messages and it just kept going with consecutively increasing numbers. Eventually I stopped it with the OFF button and then tried to reboot, but the same thing happened. Please help somebody. Should I let it just carry on running or am I likely to be losing my hard drive data as it does this check? Thanks, Dave

A:Check Disc just runs and runs

Leave it on overnight to complete its check. Did you notice any disk errors, or did it ask you to run chkdisk /f ?

Dell Dimension E510 running Windows XP (service pack 3).

I bought this desktop computer about a week ago off of Craigslist. I was running late that day so I didnt get to ask much more than I already stated. When I used it the first week it was slow but tolerable. As the days passed the speed slowed even more to programs not even responding. I also would like to erase all the user information and settings so I can start new with a decent working PC. My knowledge in computer software and program procedures etc. Just let me know if you need more specific information.

A:Windows XP runs slow...if it runs at all!

If you bought that Dell Dimension E510 desktop from Craig's List and it still contains all the programs and "debris" and issues from its previous owner, you need to do a clean reinstall of Windows XP SP3 and get a fresh start with it.

What's the 7-character "service tag" number on one of the stickers?

What's the complete version of Windows XP that's on the Microsoft Certificate-Of-Authenticity sticker that has the product key?

Were you given any discs with that desktop?

1. you can mix any makes of disks. They are all 'compatibel'.

2. the make does not matter. They are all the same since they all come from the same factories in Thailand. I have a dozen different makes and do not notice any difference.

3. except Seagate - one of those just died on me. The first and only disk that died in my installations.

But having two operating systems on one 10 gig hardrive and lots of preinstalled programs such as office has taken its toll and I was warned the other day that my harddisk was nearly full! Hello,

Re: Win98SE - Intel 465 Mhz

The harddisk in my PC is 8 GB of which only 2,56 GB is still available now.
From I similar PC (done away in the meantime) I still have a 8 GB IDE harddisk.
and want to place it in my PC.
Please mind that I have never opened a PC sofar.

a) I don't know to what electronic circuit-cable it must be connected (wondering about serial and parallel)

b) then this second harddisk must somehow be connected to and made visisable to the system (by cables I think; however what cables, new ones or
already present)

When I tried to google this subject I only found items on partitioning etc, not
about how to get and connect a second harddisk inside a PC.
Furthermore I have no idea whether there are special well-known problems
related to having a seond harddisk installed (e.g. very slow system)

Advises will be highly aprreciated.

Hello Conny2003, No Harddrive will come preloaded with OS.  If you want the HDD replaced and OS reinstalled together, you will have to send the laptop to HP for service. Hi bro, just a question which company's internal hard disk is good and very stable. I have been using seagate for long time, i believe company's reputation has gone.I replaced my 320 gb hdd for several times , even though company gives 5 year warranty but no use.I was replacing my hdd continually and so many times data losses, recently just a weak back my hdd has come from replacement, just with in 5days of time again status of hdd has degraded. I'm really fed off with this hdd(seagate) prior to this same case with 250 gb. So which internal hdd is best(cost effective).

And please let me know that any incompatibility of my system is causing frequent hard-drive failure , I will provide with full specifications of my system. Myself i built this system.

Core2duo E7300
GA-Ep43(gigabyte mobo[no display board])
4gb(2+2) 667mhz
320gb seagate hdd ( 2008 june)
d-link wireless desktop adapter
Nvidia 9800gt of 1gb DDR-3
LgDVDrom
I-ball gaming cabinet with 600watt smps.

Cooling-additional 4 powerful fans and default 3 fans

If it's a computer I advice getting an external hard drive, you can get 1TB for like $40, and internally I'd go with Acer, of all the Acer computers I own, none of the hardware has ever failed. Yet, with HP, the HDD, mintor, CPU, fan, and some other stuff, all broke in less than a year.

Hi guys,

I built my own computer about 2 weeks ago. The problem is the Harddisk is not detected in BIOS ( Boot recognizes the Harddisk) since the first day. I could manage to load windows and until now everthing is running smooth.
Today I wanted to install a second OS (Linux). I got the message that there isn't a Harddisk on my computer. I tried after that to install a second version of windows with the same result- Harddisk not detected.
I tried to change the jumpers on my Harddisk with the result that Windows didn't start up.
In BIOS everthing is on Auto. What's the problem?

P 4 630 3.0 Ghz
Asus P5LD2
80 GB HDD Seagate IDE
windows xp pro SP2

thanks for your help.

I am not sure if this is the correct forum to post this question. If it is not, I apologise in advance. Just as a matter of interest, is it possible to over defragment one's hard drive? Can it maybe corrupt files? I defragment almost everyday, sometimes even twice or more times a day. Thanks.

A:Harddisk Defragmentation.

If you are talking about Windows XP it should tell you there is no point in defragmenting below a certain limit. If it does that don't bother to defrag - you're just wearing out your hard drive for no purpose.
Assuming everything is working perfectly no harm should come from defragmenting when its not needed but in the real world it does increase the chances of corrupting data through either disc error or power glitches. It's a matter of balancing the risks and the benefits.

Hi,

Toshiba L750, core i5 - win-7 64bit installed. 4gb ram, 600gb HDD,
50gb os, 250gb, 250gb partitions. 8gb Virtual memory on 3rd partition.

Used sparingly and working fine until a few days ago. I heard some faint whirling sound (probably the HDD) and in some time the OS crashed.
It went into an infinite loop of shutting down and rebooting trying to recover the system.

At some time, I chose command prompt and ran chkdsk on all the partitions chkdsk /f /r

It seemed to work, although the computer was only half as fast.

After a couple of boots, I only get a blank screen and a cursor at left hand top, post the bios screen.

Has my harddisk crashed? If so, how do I get it working back, either with the same HDD or another one
The data is not really important to me ( I have a back up on my desktop)

Thanks in advance for your help

If you have previously installed and activated the Windows 10 you can reinstall it without a license key. The hardware id is stored on MS servers and will activate automatically.Use the directions here to "create installation media to use on another pc".https://www.microsoft.com/en-in/software-download/windows10

I'm trying to figure out how I can interpret this:

\Device\HarddiskVolume7\$mft

for Windows 2000 server

A:harddisk volume

That's the Master File Table - with an NTFS volume, it's what tells the system where on the hard drive each file is located.

If that file gets corrupted, you will get file system errors.

It can be repaired by running a CHKDSK on your drive (alternatively with the /R parameter, to repair bad sectors, or at least move any recoverable data from a bad sector to a new location.)

Would i be able to connect a 200mb Harddisk to my compter, to copy the contents into an image with Norton Ghost. I have IDE CD CDRW and Hardisk already and would make this disk a temp Seconary slave. My mother board is June 2000 Bios dated im guessing this would auto detect 200mb disk. What Specs do u think 200mb disk would be any any probs which might arise?

Cheers guys

A:OLD 200mb HardDisk.

Yes that should work. Just use auto geometry. Mobo's IDE is backwards compatible.

I don't think you would want to keep it on there long after the data was copied off of it, though. Such an old device is just taking up a valuable IDE channel.

Hi Guys,
My comp's been having this very wierd problem lately.

My harddisk shuts down automatically.Everything's fine one moment, then suddenly the orange light on the cpu(which shows hdd activity)goes off and the monitor also shuts down(the green power indicator on it turns to orange). Although the green light on the cpu(indicating power supply)still remains on.Now,in this state, even if i try to press the cpu restart button, nothing happens.I have to cut the power supply from the wall socket and then restart the pc.

Now,this situation happens randomly. It's not overheating probably because it can happen anytime after switching the pc on,10 mins or 2 hours. But another thing is that this issue happens only wen i'm watchin a movie saved on disk or playing a game like Counterstrike etc.I can surf the net or listen to music for hours and nothing happens.Even while watching a movie or gaming,it won't happen always. Sometimes several days go by before anything happens,on other days it happens every 5 mins.
I've opened the cabinet and interchanged the power and data cables between my cd-drive and harddisk,to check whether anything's wrong with the cables. But still da same problem.i've even tried using different players to watch the movies(VLC,Media player Classic),but no use.I observed the cpu usage during movie playing and it hovers around 15-20%.

My pc's config is AMD athlon 2400+ xp,256mb ddr,onboarg graphics suspport,samsung 80gb 72... Read more

In my system 40GB normal drive is installed with Windows XP SP1.

Now I am moving to 200GB SATA harddisk. But want to know that there is any way we transfered all the data with OS into the new harddisk so that I dont have to install everything again.

I heard about Ghost software but not clear that they will do this thing properly and Windows XP will detect the new harddisk because if there is any major change in the hardware then it not accept it .

And mostly my harddisk is filled, so how much space these softwares required to make the image.

A:ATA to SATA harddisk

The harddrive manufacturer should have a utility program to copy everything from the old HDD to the new one. Check their website.

I have recently had a problem with my pc and have lost important data. I was able to recover some by using recovery software. So i decided to buy a external USB HD for backing up my data from now on. Although the USC HD worked on a friends PC with XP it does not work on mine with a Win 98SE OS.
I can see the HD in windows explorer but when i try to access it, it says that the drive is not formatted and asks if i want to format it. But the HD is already formatted. I did it on the friends machine (XP) where we copied some program files that i might need on my own system (winamp3, anti-spy etc.).

Although i tried hard to get the new HD working with the external usb case i could not succeed so i decided to install it in my case as a slave driver. (Yes, i did changed the jumper settings correctly). Now, both in windows system and bios settings the new HD is visible but no drive letter is assigned to it and i can not access it in windows explorer.

Please, help. I am about to loose my mind...

Thanks,
jt.
