I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi guys,

About two months ago I bought an Acer TimelineX laptop (the 11.6" version with the i7 core.) Last night it started havong some vicious problems. It will instantly shut down or freeze with the current displayed graphics being very distorted, seemingly at random intervals. I suspect a hardware problem because a few minutes before all this started I noticed the cover protecting the internal components was out of place, so I snapped it back into position.

I tried running some of the pre-boot Windows diagnostics, but they came up clean. The system crashed once during this process and gave me a blue screen of death that said "PFN_LIST_CORRUPT". I ran a diagnostic on the memory and it came up clean as well. I'm thinking I might have broken some critically important piece of hardware. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks!

-Kai

A:Problem with Acer TimelineX turning off/freezing, suspect a hardware problem

A few silly ideas that i've tried with my Acer ..
try taking the battery out !..
just run it off the lead..
I've been told its something to do with a hardware issue with the standby mode of the fan or the CPU or some standby/neutral position that some gizmo inside does (have you guessed that I'm no techie ;o)
Try it out, it could be a simple (if not permanent) fix.
Good luck

Good afternoon Tech Immortals,

I am working on a friend's computer.
The hardware setup is the following:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+ 2.1GHz

2.5 GB RAM CRUCIAL (Memtest says the following about it: DDR2(64 bit)
373MHz DDR746 CAS: 5-5-15

Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT pci-e

MSI K9N6PGM2-V motherboard

The problems:

Problem1. When the computer is turned on it gives out 2 short beeps (memory error, I presume according to an Internet search). Then it loads GRUMP for Ubuntu 9 or Win XP pro
Problem2. Anything that is graphics intensive makes the computer crash or graphics get glitchy. For example videogames will either make windows crash or crash the game and exit to windows. On Ubuntu while running Compiz the OS freezes. It only crashes or glitches with graphic intensive software.

Solution tried:
For problem1. While loading GRUMP there is an option for memtest. Diagnostics came out fine, no errors.

More background information:
I've inspected the motherboard, the graphics card, ram, everything (looking at it physically for any burns or liquid spills etc)
Everything is roughly 4 months old, bought brand new when purchased.
In the past the user had the same setup except that his old graphics card (GeForce BFG TECH 8800 GT) died on him (will get further details about that in about an hour).
Replaced for graphics card mentioned above. Those problems are occurring.
The card gets warm, but not to an alarming point (I want to say around 60 degrees celcius).... Read more

Hi, I'm in need of figuring out if my laptop was infected by a trojan, the operating system went kapoot and i need to reinstall it, or if its hardware failure. I used it last night and my AVG caught a "small trojan horse" called cryptbase.dll and after removing it i believe is where it began. My computer restarted and ended up starting up with the acer splash with me able to click f2 for setup. But f8 doesn't work and causes a long beeping noise if i leave it alone it goes to a black screen with a underscore blinking at the top left. i've done some research but, im unsure which route to take without taking some advice for my own laptop. My laptop is a Acer Aspire 5741-3541, Windows 7,intel core i5-450 processor, 4 GB DDR memory, 500 GB HDD. if you need more information please ask because im unsure with what is needed to fix the problem. The solutions i've heard is reinstalling windows 7, or it might be a HDD problem. Thank you.

Hi, I'm new here (meaning I just made an account but have been lurking around every time I had computer trouble. This time however, I couldn't find anything that resembles the trouble I'm currently experiencing) and I'm hoping if anyone can help me or tell me if I should just throw my laptop against the wall.

I've had my printer (details and TSG SysInfo below) for over a year now, and never had any trouble with it. A few days ago, I needed to print something but wasn't able to (I can't remember what the error said, it didn't happen again) so I uninstalled the printer and re-installed it by downloading the drivers from the HP website. Pop-up balloon said that it wasn't successfully installed and when I would try to install the driver by going to print management and click on Printers I would get: "An error has occurred on the script of this page. Line: 40. Char: 21. Error: Object doesn't support property or method 'SetPrinterName'. Code: 0. URL: res://C:\Windows\system32\pmcsnap.dll/81". So I clicked on Drivers instead and tried to install the driver there and it said: windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error.

Do understand that I have no idea what I'm doing whenever my computer doesn't behave as it is supposed to, and everything is done by trial and error; mostly error. For some reason I felt the need to do a chkdsk /f /r which was scheduled on the next restart, b... Read more

I've got serious problem with my Radeon 9600PRO:

I installed Win XP SP2 on my new PC, Windows detected a new VGA device, it tried to install default drivers but it couldnt find it, (although WinXP CD was in a drive, and internet connection was working)

I installed DirectX9 and then launched the latest Catalyst Setup downloaded from ati.com, and installed drivers. After that, my card was noticeable as HIS Radeon 9600 series properly for Device Manager.
However, it didn't work well - in CCC there is 3d a graphic test - with 3d preview - a car driving on the road - and on my display it wasn't looking good, image was blurred or sth, also the icq icons were blurred (flowers and smiles) - while after uninstalling ATI drivers, when card is seen as a default VGA device (default frequency of monitor, default resolution) icq icons are looking well...

With Catalyst Control Centre installed, after reboting my display goes blank, and the only solution is reboting in safe mode, unistalling ATI drivers, and installing them once again, then it works but until the next rebot in normal mode...

Anyone knows what' the problem is? Rahter software or hardware?
Mayby Radeon 9600Pro cann't work properly with Athlon 64?
Maybe I should change something in BIOS?

Yesterday, I came home from work to see that my computer had done a reset on its own. When I turned it on, I found the Win 10 Anniversary update waiting for me. Since then, I have had several crashes with games, and even blue screens.

The BSOD's go by so fast, that I had to turn off the automatic restart just to read the error as STOP CODE: MEMORY MANAGEMENT. Apparently, this means that there is a problem pertaining with my RAM.

A few months ago, I came on here with a similar problem after my PSU blew and I had to get anothr one. I solved that by buying 2 new RAM cards to replace the ones inside. I ran a memory diagnostic which showed no problems, and right now I'm running a system file check scanner as well. If both of these come back fine and there are still problems, I may have to get new RAM sticks.

I have a 2 year warranty on them, so replacing them again would be no problem. However, before I do that, I was wondering if the problem might be my motherboard or CPU as they are the only components still used from the computer from when the Power Supply blew? These would be my 3rd set of damaged RAM cards in a year, and that just strikes me as weird, especially since they are designed to withstand overclocking conditions.

A:Unknown hardware problem (possible software problem)

As the computer shut dow/reset for some unknown reason, I'd suspect that unknown event to be related.

Could be power related (ie: power surge or dirty power), power supply (if you are using a non-Tier one model, or possibly the motherboard.

Bottom line, some event occurred which caused this issue and it likely isn't related to previous issues.

The short version of my problem is that at some point after a reboot, certain web pages fail to load.  I'm not sure what the root cause is, at all.  I am running Windows 7 SP1 and was up to date with updates when this started.

When it started happening:
Thursday night, the power flickered at my apartment and made my computer reboot.  I figured it was a good a time as any to install Windows updates since I hadn't done that in a while.  After doing so was when I first noticed the problem.

The problem:
What happens is after I reboot, at first, everything works fine.  At some time after, some web sites just don't load.  The sites that don't load are consistent (if I reboot and wait, all the same ones fail).  A couple examples are bleepingcomputer.com itself and any of Valve's (the game developer) sites.  It doesn't seem that computer help/anti-malware sites are all not working, since MBAM and AVG's sites work.  Google itself always works and when Googling for info on this problem, I seem to find more sites that don't work than do, once it starts happening.

I don't know specifically at what point stuff stops loading.  I tried rebooting then going to read a book for an hour, and it was working when I tried immediately after.  If I reboot and open Firefox with a ton of tabs and start browsing around, it might stop within a few minutes.

What I tried:
At first I thought it was my Internet connection or ... Read more

Hi all, I was hoping someone could help me out. I've been having a reoccurring issue with my laptop. The basic issue is that it runs very, very slow - using about 80%-100% of the CPU when a program is open and 30%-50% of the CPU when no programs are open. If I try to restart the computer, it will hang on a black screen between the "Starting Windows" screen and the "Welcome" screen.

The first few times it occurred (July, October, and mid-November) a System Restore from Safe Mode solved the issue. The fourth and fifth times it happened (late November and early December) I had to try restoring to multiple different restore points before it would work again. The sixth time (mid-December) no amount of System Restores did anything. I ended up running the "sfc scannow" command and that seemed to solve it. The seventh time (late December) neither System Restore nor "sfc scannow" did anything. I ended up reformatting and doing a clean install of Windows. That solved the problem for about a week, then last night it started happening again.

I'm a little lost at this point. I've run tests on both the memory and hard drive and they came out fine. I looked through the event logs each time the issue occurred and didn't see anything that seemed likely to cause this. The fact that it keeps reoccurring, even after a clean install, makes me think it's some kind of hardware issue. But the fact that the computer works completely fine... Read more

My system crashes. often. most reliably it crashes when i am playing diablo 2 on battlenet. it could go an hour, or maybe 3 minutes. it seems to go the busier the scenes are, though sometimes crashes when nothing is going on. sometimes it just reboots, sometimes the game just crashes and i can restart again right away.
i upgraded my video card and the crashes are still happening.
also, stable programs like yahoo msgr crash with a "yahoo messenger has a problem and needs to close now" window. control panel, my computer, random system software hangs up and needs to be closed via task manager (program not responding).
sometimes "services and apps" goes awry and i get a window telling me to save my work in 60 secs because it's about to reboot.
i reformatted not long ago. also i defrag, and scan for everything religiously (ad-ware too, i run all the major programs). i have 4 fans and the hard drive is sitting under the air conditioner.

I listed this in the software section but no one seemed to want to jump in. Maybe it's a hardware problem and I listed it incorrectly. Went to transfer a newly built Access database file to another computer by way of a thumb drive (G on this system, an ACER XP with 4GB Ram) and got the message: "G not accessible, access is denied". I had used the thumb drive to transfer a preliminary test database the day before to the other machine just fine. The thumb drive seems to work OK in the other machine transferring files back and forth, etc. Also, now this machine won't recognize the CD drive. I run Kaspersky Internet Security and it reports no security threats detected. Thanks for any guidance as to where I need to go to diagnose this problem. No CD or thumb drive makes for a really, really ineffective and inefficient workplace.

A:Is this a hardware problem?

I know this is pretty basic, but did you restart Windows? Once fully restarted then insert the thumb drive, it should re-locate it and assign the "G" to it once again.

But then when it has booted if I go to a text program it gives an endless uncontrollable stream of = signs, same in the search box at bottom left, In qwicken it churns the date endlessly forward. Try this first:

Boot your PC with the "Last Known Good Configuration" option.
This quick little option can be accessed by following these simple steps:

Press and hold down the "F8" button as you boot up your PC and before the Windows logo is displayed. This will bring you to the Advanced Boot Options, wherein a list of options on booting up your Windows 7 system is provided.

Locate the "Last Known Good Configuration" option and select it by pressing the Enter key. Your PC should now start booting Windows. Wait and see if it works.

If that didn't work, try System restore.

I just put together a computer (AMD) ect and everything works great, but. Every once in a while the computer shuts off and wont start back up for a good bit, maybe 2 hours or longer. One time it poped when I surfing and didnt start back up until about 2 hours.

Ok, now here is what I have had to do to get it running again. I pulled the main plug that goes to the board off the plug in and then installed it back and now it works. I would hear a small click noise when I plugged it back on the board. I have had to do this several times and then it starts right up. I have giggled the wires, plug, and tried to press the connecter on more with no luck. I unplug the connector and reinstall and it works. Anyone know what could be the problem. This last time it wouldn't start up for a day until I unplugged the main connector. Thanks for any help that anyone might have.

Hi everyone.
I have a custom computer that is shutting down after about 5 mins of up time, wether idle or running a program (any program). I'm suspecting a hardware problem like bad memory but figured I'd contact those better qualified to answer my questions with knowledge.

Just tell me what you need to know please, and I'll do my best to help you (help me).

Hi,

Sorry if this is in the wrong section. I was wondering if anyone could help me regarding this strange DVD/CD-RW hardware problem. If I put an audio CD in either D (DVD) or E (CD-RW) drives, nothing will happen. If I go to "My Computer" and double-click the drive where to CD is in, I get an error message:

Yet, if I put a DVD into the D:\ drive it'll work perfectly. I've searched for this problem and apparently it has something to do with the regedit upperfilters and lowerfilters for the key 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318 – however I looked these up and the filters are missing from the registry key.

If anyone can help, I'd be really grateful.

I have just purchased a new Motherboard, CPU, Case for my PC

1 Gigabyte GA-7DX Processor
1 Athlon 1.4Ghz Processor
1 N880 FULL-TOWER ATX-300W CASE

After building my PC I discovered that the PC wouldn't power up at all (the fan for the power supply wouldn't even spin).

So what I decided to do is to go down to my local PC World and have them test the power supply (as well as make sure that i wasn't doing something stupid). After returning to PC World I then was told that they had swapped my power supply over with another power supply, but still nothing. Due to the problem not being the power supply the guy in the shop said I think it is probably the motherboard, so I then sent the motherboard back to the place I purchased it from.

The motherboard was then tested and results were 'After Testing Your Motherboard We Have Found No Faults At All, It Works Perfectly'.
Please Could Someone Assist With This Quite Major Problem

Many Thanks

Matt

My computer froze a few days ago, and repeated this behavior after reboot. I re-imaged using various different Ghost backups and the same thing, screen froze. Occasionally I'd get the BSOD, and once it prompted a CHKDSK, which was about finished (showing no errors) when it froze again. It had also hung at various times during my attempted re-imaging (using Ghost). I've used Ghost on the same computer many times in the past with no issues. I was able to fully re-image if I let it sit overnight and tried again in the morning, but eventually the same thing, hung screen. I tried again by removing all but the bare minimum in terms of hardware, and same thing.

The only 'new' thing I've done lately is upgrade to the ViewSonic monitor using the PVI inputs rather than the traditional monitor input.

Would this be something potentially heat related? The fans seem to be in working condition, but I know nothing about the heat sinks, etc. Or could it just be a bad hard drive? I don't think it's a virus or anything because I've re-imaged to working times while not connected to the internet (but I could be wrong).

MSI motherboard (amd 64 4000), 1G RAM
Dual Serial 70G HD's (no RAID; One is C:, the other is for Ghost backups) + an older IDE HD for data. Echo Soundcard with 1/4" inputs. ViewSonic monitor (new), everything else is 2 years old

Thanks!

I have a Dell Dimension 8400 running Windows XP.
In the past 36 months I have had 6 DVD and CD drives replaced in this computer. The problem is always the same in that the tray gets to where it will not open. I open it with a paper clip and the tray is loose and free moving. A couple of times I have seen the small drive belt and it is broken. I have gone through 2 (20X Liteon) drives in the last 60 days with very limited usage. I am the only user of the computer and extremely careful so I know the tray is not being beat up and abused. Would appreciate any help someone may offer.
Thanks---

scsi use a very thin slot on your laptop and i would need a terminator. you can also look under your device maanger and look under scsi devices and that will you tell. failing that you could give everest home edition a go and that tells you what you have connected to your computer

Hi! I recently assmebled a new CPU and its been giving me trouble. I have a Intel 2.4 GHZ core 2dual proccessor on a Intel 945GCNL SND/VGA NIC Motherboard with XP Pro loaded. It started out well but then a message was displayed "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer
The problem seems to be caused by the following file igxprd32
If this is the first time you have seen this stop error screen restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps.

The device driver got stuck in an infinite loop. This usually incicates problem with the device itself or with device driver programming the hardware incorrectly.

Please check with the hardware deivice vendor for any further driver updates".
I went to the Intel website and downloaded the driver updates and tha BIOS update installed it also. It seemd to be okay for some time and then the same thing happened again. What could be done? Please Help! Thank You.

K, so I got done building a computer for a friend. The Specs are: AMD Athlon 64 X2 (socket 939), Chaintech VNF4 Ultra (award bios), G. Skill 1 GB (x2), Blue Orb II Heatsink fan, THermaltake 500W Powersupply, 250gb HDD, APEVIA case, I used my motherboard, cpu, and ram that i was using until about a week ago when i got upgraded parts (they worked fine). I bought new power supply, case, hard drive, and cpu fan for his computer. I put it all together and realized he didnt have a vid card like he said he did, so we managed to find 2 pci vid cards. We plugged one in and turned it on...all seemed well except that the monitor remained blank. I tried the other pci card in a pci slot and samething. I had my another friend come over and I put a geforce 7600 in pcie x16 slot, a long beep occurred, repetitively (beep, pause, beep, pause, beep, etc.) I swapped it for a geforce 8800gts...same beep. I tried multiple things including: resetting battery on mobo, reseating the ram and cpu, trying a 700W powersupply, putting mobo on cardboard, using diff HDD, etc. If i take ram out all together, theres no beep. Also, I know its not the monitor cuz i've tried it on other comp. So basically it beeps endlessly when theres a vid card in pcie x16 with no visuals, and no beep wih no visuals with pci vid card plugged in. I dont have a mobo or cpu to swap, but im thinking maybe theres something wrong with mobo or cpu? hope not. Also, I should say that when i took my heatsink fan off before building... Read more

Hi

I noticed burning smell from my PC and then the PSU blow up and a spark was noticed. I changed the PSU unit with a similar model. I was able to start windows XP but after a while, the electrical supply to the PC cuts out on its own. I noticed a flashing light continues to flash on the start button and it only stops when I physically remove the electrical supply lead from the PC. Any idea what has happened?

Thanks and best regards

A few weeks back I was here, at the video card forums asking for some hardware upgrade advice. The threads are these where all my system specs are already available: Once again...PSU and Graphics combo
and What Video Card?

My problem is this- After installing the PSU, the GPU and the RAM i plugged my computer and turned it on. Everything loaded up as usual, and I went on ahead to check the RAM, the system recognize it properly, all is good! Now, I moved on to the Graphics Card. I take out the cd, put it in and start the installation. When I click for it to begin, after a while an error with a bunch of weird numbers appeared and I couldn't proceed with the installation. After a few failed attempts to install, I figured the only problem seem to be with my computer not wanting to accept the graphics card's installation so I decided to take the card out and start it again. It loads, but it's MUCH more slower in start-up and after everything loads... BAM! The computer sort of freezes/ crashes and I can't do anything. I tried restarting a few times but a few minutes after the painfully slow start-up, it still happens.

I don't think the problem is with the PSU, everything turns on correctly. Im sure it ain't with the RAM either since the computer recognizes it and shows it. The problem is with the GPU which I already took out but it seems that it might have done some damage...and I have no idea why.

Does anybody have a clue as to what's wrong or what can I do?

A:New hardware, problem with XP

I would start with the GPU drivers, which are the source of most problems. Chances are, there are newer drivers on the manufacturer's website than on the CD. Uninstall any of the drivers you installed off the cd, then download the latest video drivers and give it a go.

I bought a dell laptop just over a year ago, and about 6 months in had a major hard ware failure, but to this day have never figured out what it is, basicallyt its a blue screen error that randomly comes on at first it was a rare problem occuring once or twice every week basically its an error that says the computer was shut down to prevent damage there was a probelm with somethign somethign something (running windows xp)

then the error became more frequent and by the end the windows xp loading screen would come on and it would crash then ever time.

now obviously after re formatting a 100 times and the error reoccuring i rang dell and they started replacing bits

first the hard drive, then the hard drive again, then they replaced the mother board and cpu basically every important componant

eventually i got so fed up of ringing i sort help online and luckily found somone i knew on a forum worked for dell, he managed to get my laptop replaced and all wads well

as luck would have it, they forgot to pick up the laptop so i still have it here with me

so as you can imagine i would like to fix it myself as there is no point keeping a bust laptop around

yesturdasy i install windows 98 no probelms and am goinna try putting xp back on, but i dont htink it will work for long
basically the laptop is fine except for this error

the only other problem is the modem stopped working which i have just removved incase that was cvausewing the problem
anyway anyone have any idea what ca... Read more

A:Hardware problem

Basically it could be anything, and RAM would be the first thing I would look at. Most graphics cards are built into the motherboard on laptops so that may have been replaced as part of the motherboard. You can download a memory tester from here: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp and run that. Press T to run the extended tests.

If the laptop is indeed yours to do as you wish then I would sell it; people will pay nicely for the LCD panel alone. However, DELL probably wants it back as they put several new parts into it and they almost always want their parts back no matter what.
