system restore not working?

Q: system restore not working?

Installed Norton Internet Security 2005 and now, whenever I try and do a system restore it says "System restore encountered a problem and has to close".

It does this all the time, even in safe mode. Symantec has mentioned that I should turn off NIS2005 and try system restore. If it then works it is a Microsoft issue.

I have been onto the Microsoft websites and they do not mention how to repair or reinstall system restore , does anyone out there know?

Preferred Solution: system restore not working?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: system restore not working?

First have you gone through the troubleshooting drill here:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q302796

In particular determine you have enough available hard drive space and perhaps purge the System Restore archive and try manually creating a check point and restoring it?

What Windows version/Service Pack update do you have?

While there is an sr.inf "setup" file for System Restore, you may be prompted for locations to reinstall files from, and I'm not sure if you can reinstall it properly from the Service Pack files.

So my little sisters boyfriend deleted all the history on my Google Chrome, 'to free up space' and I think he's been on something weird on my laptop, and want to find out. I googled how to get the history back and the other thing I fully understood was to do a System Restore to back before he deleted it. I did that three times to different points in time, definitely before he did it and it hasn't changed anything. If anyone else has any ideas they would be much appreciated, although please bear in mind I'm not massively great with computers! Thank you

A:How to restore Chrome history, system restore not working?

I don't think you can get it back unless you had a backup, System Restore doesn't affect data so that's why it doesn't work.

Why do you need the History restored anyways?

Hi!
I recently noticed that when I do a Google search, the link redirects me to random ad sites, making it nearly impossible to get to the page that I want. I tried System Restore, only to realize it won't let me go past the last step. Also, my CD/DVD drive doesn't seem to be working. You can watch movies and discs in the drive, but it will not recognize a blank disc for burning music or photos.
I have AVG, and it has only detected tracking cookies. I scan with Malwarebytes on a regular basis, and it never seems to find anything. I scanned with AdAware, and it detected tracking cookies as well. I clean out my Cookies and Temporary Internet Files folder quite frequently, but I can't seem to fix the problem.

Thanks for your help!

Please download RootRepeal Rootkit Detector and save it to your Desktop. * Close all programs and temporarily disable your anti-virus, Firewall and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. * Click this link to see a list of such programs and how to disable them. * Create a new folder on your hard drive called RootRepeal (C:\RootRepeal) and extract (unzip) RootRepeal.zip. (click here if you're not sure how to do this. Vista users refer to this link.) * Open the folder and double-click on RootRepeal.exe to launch it. If using Vista, right-click and Run as Administrator... * Click on the Files tab, then click the Scan button. * In the Select Drives, dialog Please select drives to scan: select all drives showing, then click OK. * When the scan has completed, a list of files will be generated in the RootRepeal window. * Click on the Save Report button and save it as rootrepeal.txt to your desktop or the same location where you ran the tool from. * Open rootrepeal.txt in Notepad and copy/paste its contents in your next reply. * Exit RootRepeal and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.Note: If RootRepeal cannot complete a scan and results in a crash report, try repeating the scan in "Safe Mode".

Accidentally deleted important files, system restore not working
I accidentally deleted some important files when trying to free up space on my laptop. Now, when I startup, it cannot go to my user. I lost my email settings, other functions. My docs are accessible by going to 'My Computer' then to drive C: then to the user, etc. However, from my Start menu, I can't get to them by simply clicking 'My Documents'.

I've tried to do some 'repairs' using Microsoft Knowledgebase but so far have been unsuccessful. I tried some of the suggested things and have made alist of many of the files that are missing when I tried to do a system repair. These files are not in the recovery section c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386. The list is here:

Lmmib2.dll
spider.exe
clipbrd.exe
hostmib.dll
staxmem.dll
admexs.dll
appconf.dll
iisadmin.dll
iisfecnv.dll
infocomm.dll
iscomlog.dll

I ran HiJackThis and the results are below.

any ideas would be helpful.
Thanks.

Hello to all,

A month back I accidentally deleted the wow6432 node from my registry under system_user. I believe this is the root of all my problems. Once I did that, my toshiba c885 D 64 bit would not boot. I forced the computer to shut down and pressed f12 to get to the system recovery options. I then restored to a point before my blunder. Well, my laptop worked for a while and then magically the screen goes black and will not reboot. I did sestem restore a few more times since I could get a little bit of work done in between restoring and the screen turning black again. After I was fed up with having to run system restore every other day, I decided to run system refresh to keep my files but reset everything else. After restoring I am getting the same problem and find myself again running system restore every other day just to keep working.

My questions are if I completely reinstall windows 8 and start from scratch, will this definitely solve the problem? I thought system refresh would have worked, so I'm not sure. Also, are there any other available options for me to fix my computer without starting from scratch?

Thanks so much in advance! -Aaron

Hi awrontherise,

Since you did not provide your specs, all my suggestions are just speculative in nature; however, I can tell you that a clean install will fix all system software corruption but if you also have hardware and/or driver issues they will have to be addressed separately. So, based on what you have told us so far, I would recommend this as your first step:

Repair Install Windows 8

Now, if the above doesn't work, you may have to take this route:

Clean Install - Windows 8

Good luck.

Hello,
I will try to explain this as best as I can so if you need any more information please ask and I will gladly answer. If this is in the wrong forum I apologize. If it is please redirect me and I will post it there.

I have built 11 computers, all containing the EXACT same hardware and software. I install windows 7(64bit), all the drivers for each component, and activated the copy of windows. The pc will run completely fine running any program I ask it to. The problem does not happen until I reboot the computer, now this is not always on the first reboot. These computers could last a few days and then I reboot and it all breaks. When I randomly reboot the system it will boot up showing problems and asking for a system restore. So I do the system restore and reinstall a few drivers and the same problem will persist.
I eventually get fed up with the whole process and decide to completely reinstall Windows thinking maybe I could have done something wrong(been doing this for 15 years no problem but it happens). After a completely random(as far as I can tell) amount of time and reboots the system will do it again. I am completely stumped on this issue and could really use the help. I have managed to get 2 working for a few weeks now but they hard bent cpu pins from the factory and I straightened them out. The other ones I have checked and they are fine(so it seems).
The System is running an ASUS P8Z77-v PRO motherboard, EVGA Nvidia 650 TI graphics card, i7-3770 CPU(may be an... Read more

The other day I was trying to figure out what coral paintshop pro meant by security key, so I googled it. Something popped up and asked me if I wanted to download, and I wanted to say no, but my laptop's mouse is too sensitive at times, so I accidentally clicked yes. My computer automatically shut down right after that. Every time I turn it on now, it goes straight into System Repair and it doesn't work, it says it cannot repair. I've tried System Restore, but since that doesn't get rid of the documents that have been downloaded, it isn't helping either. My computer won't even let me enter any form of Safe Mode, it just goes straight back to System Repair. Please help me. I'm having a number of problems with my computer. I have a Dell Dimension 3000. I'm running Windows XP Home Edition w/Service Pack 2. I just recently starting having problems; about 4 days ago. I went into Windows media player 11 to listen to music and it kept skipping. I tried to play a video and it did the same thing. I tried rebooting the system, but that didn't help. I've scanned my computer with Windows Defender, Norton, Spyhunter, and Spynomore. All of them came up with nothing. I've tried to restore it and keeps giving me the "restoration incomplete" screen afterwards. I've tried going back to older restore points, but none of them work. Yesterday, I came home and tried to listen to music again hoping that maybe "it just fixed itself". Right. This time, the music wouldn't even play, and I got an error message that said that there was no audio device installed on my computer. Today, I tried the music again and it plays with the skipping. Progress I guess. Throughout all of this I keep getting error messages saying "generic host process for win32 has encountered a problem and needs to close" and something about a "DrWatson debugger" encountering a problem. I have no idea what either 1 of those means. I don't know if I might have a virus or software problems. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanx!

I have also checked to see if the system restored was disabled, which it was not.

Hi,
I have been trying to restore my computer to a couple days previously but it just won't work. I've been trying to do this to restore an art program I use daily that I somehow managed to reset my settings on and I can't fix it. I keep getting the error message 0x80070571 and I ran chkdsk/r last night then ran system restore but it still did not work. I disabled Windows Defender temporarily and it still did not work. I even ran it in Safe Mode and it still didn't work. I scanned for viruses and there's none so I'm pretty sure it's not that. I also went through services.msc and started Volume Shadow Copy service because it wasn't started then restored again but it did not work. Can anyone help? I'm running sfc/scannow at the moment.
My computer is a HP 15-f039wm Notebook PC running Windows 8.1 OS. I've had it for less than a year I believe, with no problems.

Windows XP Pro SP3.  Although a number of problems with this PC have been corrected with the help of members on this site, there still remain a few. One of the present problems is that System Restore does not work, nor will regedit export its files. I'm using erunt so the latter is no hardship.
I ran rkill and FSS - the logs are below.
One of the members here stated that the System Restore problem was solved by by re-installing sr.inf from the c:\windows\inf folder. I tried this, but it led me to a BSOD and a memory dump. I booted back with "last known good configuration" and it's back now to where it was.
I'd be grateful for any help in correcting the remaining errors.

A:System Restore Not Working

Try this:

You will need to be able to view hidden files, so go to Start>> Control Panel>> Folder Options>> View tab.
Under Advanced settings, place a check mark in: "Show hidden files and folders".
Then uncheck: "Hide extensions for known file types".
Click Apply, then OK to exit.
Open Windows Explorer, then go to Windows>> inf folder.
Open the inf folder and find a file named:
sr.inf
Right click this file and select "Install" from the resulting menu.
Note: This procedure will delete all restore points from your old installation and recreate a fresh installation of System Restore.
When finished with this reboot the system and try going back into system restore and see if it works.

You like to remove Windows Media Player or to remove the plugin?
You can disable WMP via :Control Panel->Turn Windows feautures On/Off and under Media Feautures find and select Windows Media Player.

I probably used up all of my "helps" with Mar's computer problems but I also have a question to ask about my own computer.

I have a Dell with WinXP

I had DSL Lite installed on April 24th...LOVE IT! Since then, i've downloaded the latest Acrobat reader 8, as well as updated my Firefox and a few other programs. I've noticed that its been starting to slow down a lot. My email screen takes awhile to pop up. I uninstalled Acrobat and Firefox and got the older versions back but its still slow.

I decided to restore to April 25th. But I get a message saying "unable to restore this point". Tried another date, got the same message.

I dont have Norton antivirus. I have AVG. Could something in that be preventing my restore? I also have my firewall on in my control panel. Should I temporarily shut that off to restore?

Thanks for any advice.

Seldom does work, really.
You might try a full defrag and try again, but usually when System Restore doesn't work there is no good fix.
Any chance you have an infestation?

Check "System" in the Event Viewer for any error logs pertaining to System Restore. To do this click Start>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Event Viewer, click System in left panel, right panel will have error logs.

It was fine before i last reinstalled windows xp. I wanted to do a clean format which the computer couldn't do for some reason It would only let me overwrite the previous installation. Its letting me open system restore and make my own restore points + automatic ones. But after trying to restore, it just says it was unable to, with no details explaining why.

Hello

My system restore fails every time I attempt it. This has happened the last 3 times I had a need to attempt restore. (Three attempts separated by months in time, about different issues.) This time, I am thinking something may be wrong with my system restore function.

In this case, it is simply a matter of trying to roll back a browser update.

I saw a whole list of available restore points, and I went to the second one back - from only a few days ago. The restore failed.

I am using Windows Vista Home Premium, OEM from Gateway Laptop about 1.5 yrs old. I allow most updates.

Any Suggestions? Thanks.

A:System Restore Not Working

Solution:

The problem was caused by Norton NIS 2009.

The problem was resolved by the following steps:

Go into Settings - Miscellaneous Settings - Product
Security and turn off 'Norton Product Tamper Protection'.

Then System Restore worked.

Hi all

I need to restore my xp pro to an earlier date due to removing a programme in error, however when i try to
restore, it goes through the process then i get the message unable to restore to this date.
I have tried numerous dates and its the same.
Tried it it safe mode as well and still the same.
Tried to undo the last restore event and it says 'Undo Incomplete' 'SR was unable to reverse the restoration'
Done a scan with Avast and Malwarebytes and all show clean.
All my update have been done an all is up too date.
I did not try switching off SR off, as i know if i do it may remove all restore dates and then i have lost my programme
anyway.
My settings show it at 12% which is maximum (this is not where i set it originally which was 5%) so not sure how that happened.
The programme i removed in error was 'LG cyberlink power dvd' and it looks like it removed a decoder from my WMP and now i'm not able to view DVD,s in WMP that's why i need to restore (also i need SR to work).
I downloaded cyberlink from the website only to find it was an upgrade and not the player so unable to install that as its saying it cannot find powerdvd on my system

Any help will be very much appreciated

Kind Regards
Rozzer

You could try this link. Just be aware that CNET tends to bundle other software with its downloads so choose 'Custom' or 'Manual' install. Whatever you do, don't use 'Easy', 'Quick' or 'Automatic' options and look at every screen carefully before you click 'Next' !

http://download.cnet.com/CyberLink-PowerDVD/3000-13632_4-10352449.html

Alternatively you could try the freeware VLC player, which you can get from here -

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.en_GB.html

I use the VLC player as my default for all video and music and I have yet to find a format it can't play.

Once you start a System Restore it is irreversible, you get a warning to that effect before you actually click on the 'Restore now' button, which is why you cannot undo it.

I was trying to create a restore point every couple of days and it wasn't doing it. So I went into the "task" Scheduler" and tweaked it a bit.

Now I went in today to "System Restore' to see if there were any new restore points made. And not only were there no new restore points made, but there also wasn't any old restore points.

1. Can I "un-tweak the task scheduler because I'm sure that must've been what caused my current problem.

2. Is there any way to repair the damage by getting my restore points back.

PS - I do have another Windows 7 computer and I could probably look at the task scheduler and duplicate the actions. The computer I'm having trouble with his Windows 7 Pro

A:System restore not working

Perhaps someone knows where in the Registry hives the settings are kept for Task Scheduler and can help you return it to old values.

For the future an additional way to save the Registry is to use ERUNT

It has worked well for me in every NT based flavor of Windows since NT server 4.
(The web site mentions Vista and W7 but I use it also in Windows 8.0)

If you haven't rebooted your machine since the restore point problem started
Last Known Good may be worth a try.

had this come up while doing a restore point and went back further but it still does it. I also have been having Invalid handle messages from my external modem braodband stick error 6.

A:System Restore not working

Hi There,

System Restore if is not working for a particular date then you can go back to earlier dates and try to do a system restore once again.

About "Invalid handle messages from my external modem braodband stick error 6."

Navigate to Device Manager and go to Network Adapters and uninstall the current driver for Network Adapter and restart the computer. Once the computer restart the computer will install the new drivers for Network Adapter.

Let me know if it works.
Thanks

Tried to do a system restore. But no matter which restore point I try, I keep getting " not possible to restore to this point". I thought that the restore points in the callender in bold was the date there was supposed to be a restore point...?? confused

Any help please

A:System restore ..not working

The restore points could have become corrupt due to malware, or just an accident. You can try to purge (delete) all but your oldest restore points. You should only do this if you know for a fact that everything else about your computer is working fine and you are free from all malware. Now you should Set a New Restore Point The easiest and safest way to do this is:Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore. Then go to Start > Run and type: CleanmgrClick "OK".Click the "More Options" Tab.Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

Was having a problem with the computer, doing weird things so I thought that I might go back and do a restore from an earlier point to see if it solved the problem. Anyway, went to earlier point, restored sort of, after it did everything, it told me it could not restore to that point and that nothing was done. I went to another restore point further back, same message, was not installed at the restore point, current settings are intact. Did this 2 more times, same results. I have made restore points along with the ones the systme makes. None of them works. Am wondering what the problem might be. Ran all types of antispyware, spybot, adware, cwshredder, norton antivirus, and ran panda scan. Nothing shows, not even on the HJT log. Everything on the log is the same as months ago when it worked fine. I have spywareblaster, spywareguard, and norton firewall installed. Any info would be appreciated.

A:system restore not working?

Hi, This might help>

http://bertk.mvps.org/html/srfail.html

Note the part about the Recovery partition for HP and Compaq computers and turn off RECOVERY partition monitoring as they show you...it stays ON for your working drive C:.
If you have a regular pc, without a Recovery type partiton, it's OK to let restore monitor them I guess...

Follow the rest of the steps and see if it helps at all.

Hey guys,
So... My computer has crashed and I lost everything except for what was created in a backup folder from My Documents. It's an XP OS and I remember creating a restore point sometime over the summer. But now I go to System Restore and it doesn't show any restore points available except for these last few days after the crash (12/2/06). The furthest back it goes is a point on that Friday (12/2) at 6:11:23 PM called "System Checkpoint". But it gives me an error message after rebooting that says it was unable to restore it to that point and no changes have been made. Is there another way to restore my computer or access that earlier restore point??!?!

Thanks!
Dave
