Icons deleted - how do I get them back?

Q: Icons deleted - how do I get them back?

I read through a few disappearing icon issues on this forum but mine did not disappear mysteriously hence a new post. I installed apps as admin and this placed shortcuts with icons on users' desktop. I logged in as user and dragged the shortcuts to the taskbar. Then, once my favourite apps were in the taskbar, I wanted to remove their shortcuts from the desktop so I deleted them, still logged in as a user. At this point, Windows prompted me for the admin password which I happily provided. Windows obliged and deleted the shortcuts on the desktop but that also made the shortcuts in the taskbar lose their icons!

So for example, the firefox shortcut was originally on the desktop. I dragged it to the taskbar and then I deleted the shortcut from the desktop (using admin rights). This left the shortcut on the taskbar without an icon. I tried to manually stick icons on these defaced shortcuts by selecting an icon image for them but they just don't stick.

Short of uninstalling and re-installing the apps, I have tried everything else. I haven't tried uninstall/re-install in the hope that their is a more elegant way of restoring icons to their respective shortcuts. Am I right in my optimism? How?

Thanks for reading my rant and another thanks if you post a useful response.

Preferred Solution: Icons deleted - how do I get them back?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Icons deleted - how do I get them back?

Open the app->Right click the app on the taskbar->Choose "Pin this Program to taskbar"

I think it is still pulling the symbolic link from the shortcut you deleted...not the actual exe which is why you are losing details of the icon each time

Right ok not sure if this is the correct part of the forum to post it but I would imagine so. I work as a First Line Support Incident Handler and basically work in a help desk call centre thing and often get calls where a user has logged onto another w/s and they've lost their icons and I'm not too sure why it happens. I was just wondering if anybody had any ideas why this is happening? Is it their profile getting corrupt on the server or network issues or what? The users icons are on the previous w/s they logged onto but when they go on to any other workstation that they haven't logged onto before its not showing them, its like they've been deleted from their profile on the server, so any ideas?

I recently got a new computer. On this computer, I accidentally deleted three programs. I think these three programs are default programs installed when windows 8 was installed. Im not 100% sure what the programs names were. However, I know they all had C++ Redistributable in their names. Since I've deleted them, one of my games (GTA 4) Is not running and wont load.
Are these three programs default and installed when windows was installed? Or were these three programs installed when I installed the game?
If they were installed when the game was installed then I can just re-install the game. If they werent, I need these back.

If you have links to where I could download these programs that would be great.

Thank You

Alright, I had torrented a game, I know I shouldn't be talking about P2P etc, but this is urgent. I scanned it and everything, and I knew something was fishy since the installation was a .bat file that self extracted. But being curious I ran it. Got the game, played for 30 minutes and then got off to play some music, I checked my folder and all of my music, half of my pictures, and most of other files that were in my folder were gone. I did a system restore because I thought that brought files back, but apparently not. Is there any way I can restore files from the dead? At school they've got something that no matter how hard you try to delete something you can always bring it back. If you could, could you post a link to something like that?

A:need help getting deleted files back

The school might have something like SteadyState which isn't going to help you and as you found System Restore is only for 'system' files.

Don't use the drive with the missing files for anything, it should be completely off-line until you're ready to look at it with recovery software and pull files from it if you can identify them as the missing files. Recuva is a good one to try if the files have merely been deleted (http://www.recuva.com/).

A:Pc Deleted Files Why? Can I Get Them Back

Download it from the CD you made from your friend, if you cannot find the file by performing a search on your hard drive (try the file type). Files seldom just get deleted or disappear unless you have a nasty virus on your hard drive, but you may have inadvertantly moved it during your problem-solving with the game.

A:Deleted MBR to drive D: how do I get it back?

Go Start > Run - Type "compmgmt.msc"

In the management console under Storage, select "Disk Management". This will bring up the status of your hard drives. You will no doubt see a portion of Unallocated space.

[This is from memory, so names may be different]

Right click the Unallocated space, and select "Create Partition", or "Create Primary Partition". You will then get the option to choose the size, and drive letter, the defaults should be the full allocation, and d:\. Select OK.

I can't remember whether this asks you to format your drive, but if not, go to My Computer, open D:\ and it will say you need to format it, select ok, then in the Format box, make sure the file system is NTFS and press START.

As for any data, it won't be retrievable.

Ok, so I was using Avira Antivirus and it found a virus.

It asked me to restart my computer in order to get rid of the virus in explorer.exe. It restarted and completely got rid of explorer.exe.

It deleted explorer.exe, not like it is in the recycling bin, like it is gone.

I have been told there are many of these "explorer.exe" files in the computer. At first, I couldn't even see a desktop.

The whole screen was black.

I did a System Restore and now I can see my desktop and everything works fine including the Internet, but files won't open, neither will my computer or control panel or recycling bin. I just get this message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

My audio doesn't work at all either.

I have googled the problem, but I only find solutions for windows xp and I have windows 7.

Does anyone know how to restore explorer.exe for windows 7?

I saw a similar thread but it said to go to command prompt and type in cd/cdWindowsdri. I tried that and all it said was that it couldn't find whatever it needed to. I also tried scf scannow (I think that was the name) and it didn't help either. HELP PLEASE?

I had an email that I thought was safe that I "thought" I saved, but it got deleted. Over time the deleted emails were cleared too. (OOOPPPSSSS) I see there are certain programs to run to see if they are on the hard drive somewhere, but like I said I have no idea what email program I fall under. RIght now I have a windows 8 but it could also be on my older computer, which is a vista.

Any way to possibly get it back? Thought if anybody knew it would be you guys, or gals.

Thanks, and have a great day

A:Getting back deleted emails

Are you using web mail access? That is, when in your browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.) you go to some Yahoo! or att or sbc address to access your mail? If so, the deleted message will not be on either of your computers.

If, however, you are using an email client (Vista's Windows Mail, Thunderbird, etc.) which one(s)?

I was curious if there was anyway i could fix this without formatting my hard drive. Like if i could download that partition from somewhere or the windows installation disk. thanks

A:100 mb partition deleted. need it back

Hi there.

"Nullo Problemo".

Just boot up your repair disk and go into "Repair System" when you get the start up options.

You'll need either your install disk or a recovery disk. (Both can be booted from a USB).
You'll also need to set your current partition as "Active". Use Gparted or partition wizard from a bootable recovery medium to set this.

(You'll need another bootable drive (CD / DVD / USB etc.) to boot to set this but GPARTED etc. can create bootable media for this sort of stuff).

I have numerous desktop icons (shortcuts, recycle bin, my documents folder) that I cannot delete. Oh kay, I know I am dumb for doing this, but let me explain the problem. I was going to reformat and install Windows XP on my old computer. So, I had my external hard drive in and a USB wireless adapter in. Not knowing, I unplugged the USB adapter and left the external plugged in. I went to reformat and made two partitions out of my external, after notices what I have done. I freak and turned off my computer. Now, I have two partitions both in a raw format on my external. What should I do?

I do have a trial of Get Data Back (I heard it was pretty good.) I am afraid though, because it's two partiton. I will only get half of the my data back. Should I just make another reformat for the external? I don't know what to do and I am pretty scared.

Thank you for your time,

I've not had much experience with back-up programs, however is the data is important enough, most small half-decent computer shops will be able to provide a backup service for a small fee.

The files keep coming back even though I sent to the recycle bin and empty them again and again.
But the files just keep coming back when I restart or shut down. Please help if you know any answer.

A:Files cannot be deleted and keep coming back

What kind of files keep coming back? I ask because Windows has a feature to prevent the deletion of necessary operating system files.

Another possibility is that the files that keep coming back are being generated automatically by an application or operating system component.

If you provide a bit more detail about the types and location(s) of files in question - I might be able to provide more detail.
