Failed Driver Update Error 800F0242

Q: Failed Driver Update Error 800F0242

Hi guys, it's been a long time since I've been here and don't remember all the tools, but wondered if you could help me out with my laptop.

On the 11th it tried to install about a dozen updates and one of them made it choke.
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc driver update for AMD SMBus is marked as failed 9 times in the log.
I went through the trouble shooter which fixed four of the five issues.
Tried restarting, but it still shows as failed and the laptop was running very slow/locking up for the next 30 minutes.

I am currently running the trouble shooter a second time to see if it can find and fix the remaining problem.

Does anybody have any magnificently timely ideas that will just blow this thing out of the water?
I would appreciate any input.

Preferred Solution: Failed Driver Update Error 800F0242

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Failed Driver Update Error 800F0242

Trouble shooter has finished running again and still returns this result:
Windows Update error 0x8024402C(2018-09-13-T-12_59_38A) Not fixed

The laptop seems to be running at normal speed now, and I'm wondering if that update is really necessary.
Microsoft marks it as Important.

The next step from support.microsoft has me renaming software distribution backup folders.
Any thoughts?

I tried to update my older Radeon ATI 5450 GPU via windows update...

I received the message from windows update, and showed it failed update with the 0x800706be

However when I go to device manager and check the details of the installed driver it clearly shows the new updated version? So I wonder which is correct the device manager showing the new version of the driver or windows update?

A:Failed Update 0x800706be driver...but device mgr shows updated driver?

You can identify the problem using Device Manager, which you can access by:
Opening the Control Panel Window
Selecting and double-clicking System
Clicking Device Manager
In Device Manager check if there is an exclamation point, a yellow triangle, or a question mark against your Dell device. If there is, there is a problem with your Dell device.

Hi bftdsh.

A stray crash dump is not enough. Click on the button below ....

It will download the DM log collector. Right click on the application and run as administrator. It will generate a .zip file on your desktop. Upload the .zip.

Since the 11/18/2012 event viewer (Event ID 219, Task Category 212) has been posting a warning:

The driver \Driver\WUDFRd failed to load for the device WpdBusEnumRoot\UMB\2&37c186b&0&STORAGE#VOLUME#_??_USBSTOR#DISK&VEN (followed by name of USB device)

It only occurs on start up if I have a USB memory device plugged into a USB port. The USB memory device functions perfectly and the error never occurs when I plug in and out a memory device after boot up.

The error only occurs for memory devices like memory sticks, external USB hard drive does not cause this error.

Checking back to around the 11/18/2012 I see nothing that I have changed/installed that might indicate something that has caused this. No other Windows 7 failures or issues.

Booting a second hard drive with windows 7 on the same system (I have this second installation for testing faults etc), the issue does NOT occur.

From checking forums and searching I have found a few others with this issue and a few articles on its cause

WUDFRd failed to load for the device

Event ID 219 is logged after you install Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2

I was just curious as to why it would suddenly start occurring after a particular date when as far as I can tell I have not made any changes to anything around this date.

Also I wondered if there was a fix to stop this, other than removing a memory stick before boot up!

Any thoughts?

A:The driver \Driver\WUDFRd failed to load for the device... error

I just started getting this exact same error message logged in Event Viewer when I plug a USB stick into a USB port. It happens with two different sticks from two different manufactures, but it does not happen every time I plug them in. It seems that it may mostly happen the first time I plug a stick in after I have booted up my PC.

Have you been able to find a solution to get these error codes to stop logging?

I have been doing a periodic update of the system drivers on the laptop.  Last time I can recall doing this was nearly 2 years ago.  And this time I encountered problems. This topic is a follow-up to my query on this thread, regarding safe mode start/restoring after a failed driver update:http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Boot-and-Lockup/booting-safe-mode-on-hp-g6-2002au/m-p/5690028/... And as i reported there I begam doing a one by one update to locate what caused the original problem with the bulk update.  After 7 one-by-one driver updates, I found the (or, at least) one causing the problem.  In the following image, the 2 PCI-to-USB host drivers caused a windows failure message after the update.  There are 6 USB-related drivers in this extremely old/aged list and clearly they relate to the number of installed hardware items on the laptop.  See this screen shot of the Device Manager list:  Of the 6 USB drivers to be updated, I picked these 2 items to update first because 1) they looked to be the oldest (the replacements were dated in 2010), and 2) as I understand the technology, these bits connect the processor bus to the actual host and hub chips. I chose only these 2 PCI- drivers for update (unticked the selection boxes for all the others in the booster list), and proceeded.  When the install was completed a windows message box reported a windows failure for one of the devices (which one, not stated or ev... About last week I update my graphic card driver (nvidia geforce go 7150m/630m) from ver to using updating function in Device Management. The update when smoothly and I thought at first that it's successfull since I did not receive any error messag and in Device management list the new ver. as However, after that I got some conflicts in driver and it somehow affects my cdrom drive as it's now no longer start when turn on the laptop unless restart immediately.

I went to the regedit and see in the installer folder of nvidia, the install regitry listed as "failure" and the version is still listed as the old one ( Is there any way to correct this?

BTW, my OS is window vista home premium 32-bit.

If you have the new driver and are having problems, go back to device manager and roll back to the old driver. What you are experiencing is a common problem. Many here feel it is best not to upadate unless you are having problems.

So I've been trying to update my graphics card. Before I ever got the notification for the update and tried to install it, I could play minecraft, and star craft, and watch Netflix video. When I did install, and was given the failed due to I/O error box, I couldn't play any games or watch any Netflix. Don't know what to do to fix this. Since, I've gone to my manufacturers website and re-installed my driver, but I think the real problem is seeing how I cant connect it. It always says it failed due to the I/O error, so I cant connect it to the video card or something.
My computer is a Toshiba. other info:
Model: Satellite L875DProcessor: AMD A6-4400M APU with Radeon(TM) HD Graphics 2.70 GHzPlenty of RAM (only 5 month old computer)
In Device Manager under Display Adapters It says Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. I just need to know how to change it. I've gone in through device manager, pressed update driver, chose to do it manually and choose a signed driver. When I choose My AMD Radeon Drive and it attempts to install, it always says it failed due to an I/O error. This has been going on for a week or so, and I thought I could fix it, but nothing works.

If you need anymore info, just ask, I just really need help im going to go nuts!

do your windows updates for at least your chipsets and graphics driver

download the drivers here Official Toshiba Support | Toshiba

Hi all.

I have an ASUS M-11 tower and I recently had it's Intel HD Graphics (4400) konk out on me. The HDMI output stopped working rendering my tower useless for watching HD movies on.

I tried using an Intel driver updating app but apparently it didn't work. After a reboot I get a solid red screen, with no text on it, and no way to interact with it. I can't login or do anything. The only thing that happens is the screen changes from red to blue if I tap ESC, that is it.

So I accessed the recovery options by pressing F9 at bootup. I chose the Reset PC option. It went thru the process, but after completing and its auto reboot, I just get a blank black screen now with no way to interact. No logos, no updating icons nothing to indicate more stuff is going on like setting up files. If I reboot from this screen, it just reboots the PC and loops back to the same blank black screen.

I tried leaving it for over 20 minutes on the black screen thinking maybe it's just doing stuff in the background, but nothing comes of it.

I am not sure what to do from here. I don't have a recovery USB or disc.

Anyone have another suggestion ?

A:Trouble with failed driver on Windows Update

Hi GhostRaider, welcome to the forums.

You might want to try going Here and try running Intel's 'Driver Update Utility' and see if that gets a better result than Windows Update.

I had the same issue when first install Windows 7 with my Intel 945 Express Chipset, the update would fail every single time

Unfortunately, Intel have not yet released a Windows 7 (32/64) driver for the 910GML or 915GM so Vista drivers in compatability mode may be your best bet of the 'Utility' does not work.

Hope this helps

Safe mode shouldn't be affected by nVidia driver.

I hope this is the right place to post.

I have been having trouble with Mass Effect Andromeda and minor freezing during gameplay. Nothing really major, just annoying pauses in the flow of the graphics and all even in low despite using 2 AMD 390X cards, a Ryzen 7 1700X, and a MSI gaming pro carbon motherboard.

I thought I could fix it with a driver update, but not only did the update fail to go through, now anything that loads causes my computer to freeze. It froze for 10 minutes until all of my software finished booting during the startup, and another 10 minutes while trying to login to Origin.

I have no idea what is going on, and I don't know where to begin to fix it. Please don't ask for a DXdiag because it's impossible to operate this thing right now. Just know I'm running on the 17.4.4 ReLive driver, and for some reason, my computer failed to sucessfully install the 17.7.2 update.

This problem happened before when I tried to install the 17.6.6 version as well, but I was able to fix it by rolling back the driver. I can't now, so now I don't know what to do. Any help ASAP would be great.

A:Serious freezing after failed graphics driver update.

Status Update: I hit the reset button after my computer froze while I was uninstalling my drivers completely and, somehow, this not only fixed the problem so far, but it also finished the installation of the latest update as well. The only problem so far is when I click on the gaming icon in the AMD Radeon Settings and the program completely stops working. I can live with that since I don't tinker with them that much, but I would still really like to know what the F*#%tapuss is going on with my computer.

I hope you can help me fix my dad's computer!! This site has helped me fix my laptop. I really appreciate you guys!!

On my dad's computer : I tried to update BIOS graphics driver per instructions for new larger monitor (which has not even been hooked up yet).

I went to the Dell website and entered the service code HPLW3G1 to find the graphics driver to update. I recall nvidia but now looking at the list that they have on that website, I am not sure what I downloaded. I saved it to desktop and then clicked to install it. I then got a small popup that said I must close all other applications. When I clicked ok on that little window - (so I could close the other applications that were open), it started installing anyway! I exited the install window (wrong thing to do? It said do not turn off power in red letters), closed applications. Then I restarted, because it didn't want to open google chrome.
NOW when I turn it on, the blue light on the on button lights up, sounds like the fan is running, but the monitor does not even respond, it goes into powersave mode. I tried another monitor, no change. The computer won't turn off, unless I hold the off button down for awhile. The wierd thing is that when the computer is unplugged, it comes back on when plugged in again. But there is never any flashing lights below the on button that indicates that the hard drive is working. I think this may be bad? I tried hitting F8 after turning it on, and nothing happens. Brand new X1 Carbon, 6th Generation. I used the lenovo Vantage software to update the system. It installed a new driver for the LTE Cellular modem (Fibocom L850-GL). Ever since, the modem no longer shows up in the Network areas of Windows.  Device Manager shows the WWAN under "System Devices" but not under "Network Adapters". The device tries to "install/de-install" all the time. Those windows install/de-install chimes keep coming, about every 2-3 minutes. Has anyone else had a problem since the update? I went as far as re-loading Windows (using the internal utility), but it actually doesn't delete the new driver files! Wiped out all user data, etc., but the new driver (along with old driver) are still there. Selecting the old driver doesn't help.  Either the device has failed, or I need to wipeout the new driver and assorted files (85MB) and re-install the older driver which worked. Any help here?

I've been trying to get my computer back so that I can at least get some stuff on it I don't want lost for the past three days. I was updating an nvidia graphics driver and it froze. So I restarted my computer and things went down-hill from there.

Nothing I know to do (which is more than the average person) works. So most of (and perhaps all of) the quick fixes you all may suggest most likely have already been attempted at least once.

What I am experiencing now is a black screen with a gray bar on the top and bottom. The top is titled: Windows Boot Manager. This is written in the gray bar. The rest of the screen reads:

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart you computer.
2. Choose your language setting and then click "Next."
3. Click "Repair your computer."

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacture for assistance.

Status: 0xc000000f

Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.

I am hoping someone can help me get make it so I can at least get some files off. System restore or anything like that is out of the picture because I was planning on getting an external hard drive for backing up, and haven't been able to yet. Ironically, payday is this Friday.

Anyway, I've even tried using ubuntu and also putting the HDD in another computer. Both ways it says that ... Read more

Did you try the suggested startup repair options with the windows 7 dvd/repair disc?

It may take several runs and will at least attempt to repair the partition table.

If you tried that already , then use the commands instead of auto startup repair - usually does the job.

If you have the disc and want further advice, post back.

If you don't have a 7dvd/repair disc , get one from here - the same bit version as your installed o/s ( torrent, but it's usually quick ):

try this.

The Wudfusbcciddriver.dll had to be manually copy/paste into the folder:

Take it from the C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\wudfusbcciddriver.inf_amd64_neutral_5cbd2ae76abeb770

as it ain't install itself if there's no USB-ICCD-compliant smart card device or SD Cards plug onto an Usb Port.

I've installed SpeedUp MyPC and Driver scanner and did a driver backup then update. Before that i made Restore Point, and Tune Up Utillities did one automatically. There were 4 updates, for Graphics, Usb, Sound and I think Motherboard ( ATI, Nvdia).
I have backups of those still, so I can post the list.
During installation there was one error but it seemed ralated to some Thumbs.db file so I didn't really look into it (some error , zero something, sorry don't remember).
At second installation there was the prompt to restart to finish the installation after restart, that i didn't do. But the Driver scanner window said that the installation was finished,. I finished all 4 and restarted. Never got to Loggon screen, just went black, and nothing.
I've tried all kinds of Safe mode but it comes to Loggon and mouse and keyboard don't work.
Nothing does.

My PC was turning itself off lately for no reason and with no message. so I thought it was some kind of a virus and I came with a solution.. Windows reinstall.

Now there is a problem. I don't have my old OS anymore, because I did change particions on a disc just before installing fresh copy. The new XP I'm trying to install goes down just after light blue instalation screen - the one after WinXP logo apears. And that stops instalation process.

Than I'm getting BSOD with "Stop 0x000000B4 The video driver failed to initialize" message. Alternatively PC turns itself off without any message. The instalation from CD went smoothly.

I can't run safe mode, enable VGA does not work too, basicly whatever I do in this F8 menu gets ignored by my PC.

I've read some posts on forum, but it seams like all people already have OS working when they first recived the error message.

Any ideas what to do? I'm not too advanced in IT, so bear in mind I can ask stupid questions...

I have a Pentium 4 system I built about 2 years ago. The system has been stable and running smoothly...until today. There were a number of XP Security updates that needed to be installed, so while I was working on a different PC I decided I had time to install these updates. The update installation routine ran without problem until time to reboot. I gave the okay to reboot, and returned to my work on the second PC.

After several minutes I noticed that the screen was blank, as if the PC had shut down. I started to hit the start button, but noticed that the power light was on. After checking things out (all cables plugged in, etc.), I hit the start button. The PC shut down and then restarted. I got the intel boot screen, heard a single beep from the motherboard and then...nothing. I repeated these steps twice with no change.

Finally, I unplugged the PC, waited 30 seconds, plugged it in and rebooted. This time, after the intel screen and beep I see text that says "Flash Update Failed. Press F4 to continue" or something very similar. I pressed F4, but nothing but a black screen with a horizontal cursor flashing in the upper left corner.

This sounds like a failed bios update, except that I was not updating the bios. There were no disks in any drive and I had not downloaded a bios update. I also keep my PC reasonably secure, running ZoneAlarm, Symantec A/V Corporate, and WebRoot SpySweeper with fresh updates and recent scans.

So....does anyone have any ideas here? Doe... Read more

Have you installed/uninstalled new software recently?
Try using CCleaner registry cleaner

I just recently uninstalled my AMD drivers along with catalyst. I then went into safe mode and used driver sweeper to insure that all drivers were gone. I restarted and my attempts to download greet me with an error message saying "Download Failed: HTTP 404" I honestly have no idea what to do now, I went into device manager and there are yellow signs next to my graphics cards (Crossfire ati radeon 5800 series cards) I'm at a total loss I've been all over google and this forum is my last hope.

I attached the file asked for and here are my system specs listed below:

Prebuilt Gateway PC - FX6860
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
Processor: Intel Core i7 3770
Card: AMD Radeon HD 7770 2GB

I'll try to describe what's happening as best I can. I've run into multiple issues when trying to either record game footage with Fraps or when trying to render videos in Vegas Studio 11 HD. What ends up happening is the screen will go black for 2 to 5 seconds and then come back with Graphics driver has failed and recovered. The application I'm using at the time will remain a blank window while the desktop and everything else will reappear. I am also unable to close out of the application I was using without using the task manager to do so.

I'm not computer literate and so I can't really do much. I had a friend run memtest and it came back normal. All my drivers are up to date, windows is up to date. So far this issue has only happened when using Fraps and Vegas so I'm not sure if this is purely a software problem or if it indicates something is wrong with a component in the computer.

One other thing to note is that under the CCC I've monitored temps with both the side of my tower on and off when this error happens. With the case on it was running at 61c and with it off it happened with it at 43c. This would lead me to believe it isn't related to my machine running to hot.

In the action center after this happens it lists video hardware error and the following:

Just in the last week I can no longer view my Iphone 4 or my Kindle threw my computer in Windows 7 32 bit Professional. I have been a computer technician for 19 years and have tried everything I can find in Microsoft, Apple and Amazon. Amazon phone support could not even fix it. I receive the MTP USB error. I even formatted my harddrive, reinstalled windows and it still did the same thing with only Windows installed. I also installed Itunes to see if that would make a difference and I can see the phone in Itunes but not in my computer. It allows me to connect my Free Agent external just fine. Both the Iphone and Kindle work on my brother's 64 bit Windows Professional and my old xp machine as a camera, but at least I can get the pictures off that way. I have even purchased name brand USB cords for both products. I need to make them work in this system as this is the one I use for everything. Any help would be wonderful.

A:Windows 7: Driver for MTP USB failed error 31 for Iphone & Kindle

Locate the device in Device Manager.
> It will probably be listed under Portable or USB
> It will have a yellow icon
> If you right click->Properties on the General tab, Device Status should indicate code 31

Now look at the device Details tab. Use the pull down menu to carefully look and see if any Class upper filters or Class lower filters are listed. If you find any, copy/paste what's listed into next post

Hello everyone!

I'm new in here and not an native speaker, so please don't beat me if not everything is 100% correct. :P
Just correct me, thank you!

About my problem:

Sadly the list was too long for the title, so here is the list:

Error codes:
Code 800B0100
Code 8024200D (as far as I know it could mean my PC shut off during an update)

Here some background infromations:

Two months ago someone destroyed my PC, since the beginning of august I'm finally able to build my new desktop PC. In this process I tried to reuse my old HDDs (bothe WD Green 2TBs, both work fine), which was succesfull. Shouldn't be to important but just to be safe.

In the process of preparing windows 7 (Professional x64) I had some driver problems (motherboard) because I tried to use my old boot drive.. in the end I newly installed Win7 on my SSD and it worked. Right now only the old boot drive isn't whiped. But so far I hadn't any problems because of that.

Afterwards I started updating. As far as I know the PC had once or twice a problem while updating. I think it shut off. At least once - I tried to reach the fan control of my pc-case and missed the right button (wasn't used to the new case).

In about this time the problems with the updating started. I think it was before I could do my first backup (sadly).
But I still think there is a solution.. even though it's hard.

Extract to the default location - which will create a new folder mbaaa in the same place.
Open this folder - there should be two folders inside it (Manifests and Packages)

Copy the content of the Packages folder to the folder

And the content of the manifests folder (.manifest files) into this folder:

Post the new CheckSUR.log file, and the CheckSUR.persist.log file.

I have had SP1 fail every single time since we got this damn laptop.
It's now affecting the rest of the computer, making updates pile up behind it.
I've been unable to update anything successfully since 12/25 and that was Security update for C++.

Besides running around the forums trying to figure this out, I've done nothing.
I've never done a "hotfix" or used a repair tool or anything really besides running a clean boot and clearing out some space in case that was the issue (which obviously it is not). I'm literally starting from scratch. I need guidance, I am so frustrated with this thing and I just don't have the will to go trying to fix it on my own.

I'm pretty tech savvy so I can navigate pretty well.. I just need to know where to go.

Give me some instructions so I can get this show on the road.
What do you need to help me? :P
