I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

In the DISA Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGS) there is a test for event tracing (#V31026).
The STIG indicates that if you are running Win 2008 the absence of etwenable = false is not a 'finding' because event tracing is enabled by default (on 2008 servers) and it should be enabled and running.
Is this the same for windows 2008 R2 Enterprise Server?
I cannot find the element etwenable in my 2008 R2 Enterprise server test system, it does not exist.
Does that mean the requirement for the STIG is met, and event tracing IS enabled by default on Win 2008 R2 Enterprise Servers?  No further action is required to enable?

Is there an easy way to verify it actually is enabled?  Check registry value, run script?

Excerpt from the STIG:
Microsoft Dot Net Framework 4.0 STIG
Rule Title:  Event tracing for Windows (ETW) for Common Language Runtime events must be enabled.
STIG ID: APPNET0067  Rule ID: SV-41075r1_rule
Vuln ID: V-31026
Severity: CAT II Class: Unclass
Beginning with Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, ETW Tracing is enabled by default and the "etwEnable" setting is not required in order for Event Tracing to be enabled.
An etwEnable setting of "true" IS required in earlier versions of Windows as ETW is disabled by default.

Tried tackling this one single-handedly to begin with and failed.

I have Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 installed as a dual boot, different partitions single HDD.

I want to remove the Windows 7 partition and keep the Win 2008. I do NOT want to lose anything from the Win 2008 partition.

Taken from Disk Management.

Disk 3 with 5 partitions
1st - Healthy, Primary partition 73MB. (I thought this was system reserve but its not, leftover space from a previous partition change). It's currently mounted and completely empty.
2nd - Unallocated space 500mb
3rd - Windows 7 OS (Healthy - system, active, primary partition)
4th - Windows 2008 Server OS (Healthy - boot, page file, crash dump, primary partition)
5th - Unallocated space 8mb'ish

I haven't been using Windows 7 for years and want to clean this drives partitions up because it's messy and wasting space. I just need windows server 2008 as it's been used as a server for years and that's all I need it for now.

I want to safely remove the windows 7 installation and merge that partition along with the 1st and unallocated spaces back into a single partition where windows 2008 server resides.

Now I've tried tackling this myself and failed. I stupidly made the windows server 2008 partition as active which killed my boot and took me forever to repair with zero loss fortunately. Sadly it was as simple as using diskpart in a command prompt from win 2008 boot disk to make win 7 partition active again.

So, how do I do this? The bo... Read more

boot into win7 and move the bootmgr to the win 2008 partition. It will mark that partition active as well.
Bootmgr - Move to C:\ with EasyBCD

now reboot into win 2008 and situation will be:
3rd - Windows 7 OS (Healthy - primary partition)
4th - Windows 2008 Server OS (Healthy - system, boot, page file, crash dump, active, primary partition)

Correct? If so .. now you can remove the win7 partition. And of course update the bootmenu so win7 is not in list anymore

The problem i am having is this...The Server 2008 installed fine on my little home server here. Runs smooth. However when i try to play MP3s on it it will run but if i start doing anything else next thing i know my cpu usage spikes to 100 and the song slows down and gets all choppy. Just opening media player sets my cpu usage at 15 percent doing nothing. This happens using the onboard sound and it happens if disable it in the bios and use the audigy.

Question i have is anyone have an answer to this? I would like to play music under Server 2k8 if anyone can figure this out. I know that vista has issues with nforce 2 but i never did know what the exact issue was that prevented nvidia from releasing the driver for it.

Im thinking there is some sort of issue with how the resources are handled with this Athlon XP cpu on this chipset. However i have read where others have had no issues at all using Vista on their nforce 2's. Either they are lying or they know some trick. The vista trick should work on server 2008 as well.

What i have done trying to solve the problem. Keep in mind i did this AFTER i found the problem so its not causing it:
Installed XP drivers for the memory controllers, Gart, and IDE
Used a Sound Blaster Audigy
Tried to force XP amd driver but failed.

My home computer runs Vista Ultimate, and is somewhat powerful.
As part of my school work, I have Server 2008 set up, which I usually access through remote desktop (terminal services), which is within a LAN.

Somehow both of them keep losing their backgrounds, and turn black. My Vista machine usually loses the background when I play a game, and then come back to the desktop. I have more than enough RAM, 4GB for Age of Mythology. It doesn't seem to matter whether I use one of the included DreamScene things, or a plain coloured background.

As for the server, just a simple light blue colour, and the next time I come on it is black again. I think it must happen when I go away for the day, because disconnecting and then reconnecting to the session doesn't cause any problems.

At least any ideas behind why this keeps happening?

Hi all,
I've just set up windows server 2008 for my home, but how do i now connect to it. The computers are mostly XP, though some are vista, so instructions for both would be great.

Also, is there anything specific you suggest doing to windows server 2008 before use? I've downloaded updates, but don't really understand the roles. What i want my server to do is let me log on, from any of my home PCs, as "nappymonster", access all my files, print to our printer, etc. And the same for 3 other accounts on about 6 computers.

Hi guys,

I am having a lot of trouble with constant BSOD's on my hp dv6500 laptop. This started 1 month ago and has been bugging me since then. I thought the BSOD's were because of windows vista (home premium) and then installed windows server 2008 on my laptop. The BSOD's continue.

I am attaching 2 different files which contain minidumps of all the BSOD's on vista SP1 and Server 2008.

One of the reason of switch was that i though HP's drivers for vista were buggy. I am using most drivers on Server 2008 from microsoft apart from the NVIDIA drivers from HP, realtek sound drivers and wifi drivers from HP.

The config of machine is :

Core 2 duo T7300 2 GHZ
2 GB hynix RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS 128MB
Microsoft USB Notebook Optical Mouse 3000 (IntelliPoint)
Motorola SM56 Data Fax Modem
Realtek RTL8101 Family PCI-E Fast Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.0)
Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN
Realtek High Definition Audio
Symantec Endpoint Protection Antivirus

I am posting in vista section because i think the issue is related to vista since the problem began there. I think problem persists in server 2008 because of common code with vista.

Please let me know if you need any more information

Please help.

I am definitely upset that Microsoft has discontinued Windows Vista support.
That being said, I want to move to a supported operating system. Windows Server 2008 is basically Vista, but for business use. I do not want to move to Windows 7, I do not like 7. With the Shadow Brokers releasing new data of NSA spying tools. I have nothing to hide, but I'd rather not have my data mined by the NSA. Since Windows Server 2008 is still supported by Microsoft for the next three years, I would like to use that to stay on Vista for as long as possible.
Of course with obvious changes being made to the Server operating system to perform more like a home OS, would it be ideal to upgrade to Windows Server 2008 SP2?

A:Server 2008 for Home Use (repost on Vista forums)

I think you are missing the point here. It is not, in these circumstance, NSA you have to worry about but every script kiddie in the world who fancies himself as a hacker. NSA after all have had these tools since they were written.
However, as this is a duplicate topic and one that more properly belongs in the Server section I an closing it in the Vista section to avoid confusion.. If anybody wishes to follow up this topic pleae do so in the Server section, here -

Hello there. I thought I should share a list that I've made over on the MSFN forum called "Last versions of software for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008."
Link: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/175262-last-versions-of-software-for-windows-vista-and-windows-server-2008/
As the title implies, this is a comprehensive list of final versions of software to support Windows Vista/Server 2008. Also included is an "Ongoing support section" which as you can probably guess, lists software that continues to support/be updated on Windows Vista. The software listed is sorted into different categories (i.e. Web Browsers, Antivirus, etc.) for your convenience.
The list started out pretty small when I first posted it back in March of 2016, but it has since grown tremendously - mostly thanks to the close-knit Windows Vista community over at MSFN.org. By sharing it here, I hope to help out any Vista users still out there that might be having trouble finding out the last compatible version(s) of their favorite program(s), or perhaps they want to know what software still supports Vista.
All software listed has been tested by myself, as well as other Vista-using members over at MSFN to ensure their compatibility with Windows Vista before they were added to the list. For anything that requires additional updates be installed on Vista in order to run (such as Service Pack 2 or Platform Update), this is specified next to the software entry itself. This is more of a post complaining than it is asking for help/advice.

Screen corruption has been a problem with every version of the nVidia driver's I've used, with the possible exception of the default ones Microsoft ships with Vista. I've tried whatever it was just before the 100.65s, then I tried the 100.65s, 101.70s and now 158.18. The problem has not gotten any better throughout all of these revisions.

This is what you see when Vista asks for your permission to do something. Notice how the continue button isn't even visible initially.

Now the continue button appears when the mouse is hovered over where you guess the button to be.

Hardware involved here is a eVGA 7800gs co AGP card. The pictures were taken with 158.18 drivers. The corruption isn't usually capturable with print screen, although after an "episode" with VLC it was and I got a screenie of it shoot me a message if you want to see it, but it contains some text that violates the TOS of this board. Basically everything is not displaying except the taskbar, and a few items I've drug the mouse over.

That is what happens if you open an app that drops Vista into Classic mode, the app that caused that was Trillian. On the right side of that 2nd pic was my Trillian buddy list AFTER I had minimized it. It shows up all washed out white in that pic because of the horrible lighting conditions for a digital camera shot, but in reality it was displaying... Read more

A:NVIDIA drivers for Vista suck (updated to include Win 7 and Server 2008 r2)

Perhaps your trouble is elsewhere. nVidia is universally rated by users (including this forum) as the best for video cards and for drivers. We see no special problems between VISTA and nVidia...
There are always troubles that crop up because video graphics cards are so fragile, but I would not consider a blanket indictment of nVidia as valid.
I would be more likely to consider power supply and memory.

Hi everybody.
As we all know, Windows Vista is no longer supported by Microsoft in any way, shape or form. This means there will be no more updates for it. There is some good news, though. Due to Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 sharing the same codebase, it is possible to install WS2008 security updates on Vista. This way you might be able to receive security updates until January 2020.
In this thread, I will compile a list of monthly updates for WS2008, and provide feedback on how the installation process went on a virtual machine running Win Vista x64. If you're interested and want to take this opportunity, be my guest, though be advised that while the updates will most likely install successfully, you're still doing this at your own risk.
Please note that if you are having problems with Windows Update taking hours or days to check for updates, and/or consuming your CPU, please check this thread.
So without further ado, this is a list of WS 2008 updates for the month of May 2017 that I attempted to install on Win Vista. In general I've provided Microsoft Update Catalog links which allow you to choose either the 32 bit or 64 bit version, however, for .Net installers, I've provided direct download links separately to avoid Microsoft's stupid and confusing bundling of updates, which lumps updates with different KB numbers together. You will need to download them and install manually, as Windows Update will NOT find them. Vista is... Read more

We had:

1) 1 Windows Server 2003 running Active Directory services to manage logon and permissions for file sharing.
2) 15 workstations.

We now want to have:

1) 1 Windows Server 2008 R2 server running Active Directory services to manage logon and permissions for file sharing.
2) 15 same workstations, with their same user profiles.

So I joined the 2008 R2 server to the domain, and then used the dcpromo tool to make it a domain controller.

Problem is, whenever I take the old server offline, (the 2003 one) everything flips out, logons are slow, and the 2008 server gives people trying to access shared files weird errors like that the server that authenticated them cannot be contacted, and asks them to log in again with their username and password before accessing shared files on the server.

What did I do wrong? I must be forgetting something.

A:Replacing a Windows 2003 AD DS server with a 2008 R2 AD DS server

1. Transfer all FSMO roles to your 2008 R2 server
2. Uninstall AD on 2003 server
3. You can now permanently take 2003 server offline

Hi guys,
What free Antivirus software for servers?
What free anti-malware would NOT be a good idea?
My friend has purchased a Poweredge server to act as a fileserver for a private network not connected to the internet..  He uses 2 laptops at the most  to access files on the server.
However at some points he will update Windows Server 2008 plus odd bits by temporaily hooking up to the Internet., and obviously leave himself open to malware etc. for a short time.
The cost of server Antivirus is very high and usually effective for 10 workstations upwards, and obviously he would appreciate keeping costs down.
I would appreciate thoughts on ideas for avoiding a costly solution.
Also, if he got Malware on it (e.g. Rootkit or Delta) would current Bleeping Computer tools (e.g. Rkill, RogueKiller etc) still work on the server - or does it require another approach?
I am asking fior advice BEFORE he gets started while options are open.
Thanks in advance guys

A:Free Server Antivirus ? e.g. for Windows Server 2008

The answer is fairly simple. Just read the details on the site -
Microsoft Security Essentials is available for small businesses with up to 10 PCs.
• Microsoft Security Essentials:
Microsoft updated it’s free Anti-Virus solution at the end of 2010 to support Windows 2008/R2.
This is easily one of the better free offerings as Microsoft has updated this solution to complete directly with some of the biggest solutions, such as Mcafee and Symantec paid versions.

When downloading, simply choose Windows Vista / Windows 7, as Microsoft has yet to update the website.http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

As my final project for the year i am setting up a server that we will eventually move all our computers on to. I am using a poweredge 2900 as a server with windows server 2008 installed. As of now i have 2 computers connected to the domain which they can log on to.

- what i need help with
- How do i give all users access to programs?
- Each student needs to have access to her own drive through the server not locally.
The client computers are connected to a switch using dhcp.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

as per sticky, downloaded and ran dds.com. result: dds will not run on Server 2008 Standard, 32 bit.
The server is PowerEdge 5900
I am attempting to locate culprit that is trying to hijack IE, the security in place is stopping it from connecting to those sites, but I need to locate the problem.
Terminal Services: Installed (functioning properly)
DHCP Server: Installed (functioning)
WINS Server: Installed (functioning)
Malwarebytes: Installed
Spybot S&D: Installed
Hijackthis: Installed
Windows Defender: Installed
CCleaner: Installed
Process Explorer: Installed
Windows Firewall: running
Note: I am not the owner of the system, just the guy trying to keep it clean, there are multiple users that are like family to the owner, and their browsing activities may be partially contributory.
Some of the workstations connected to the server may be infected with malware, and that could be a factor as well.  I have installed,  Malwarebytes and Spybot S&D on those systems, but an issue remains.
Side-note: I have a Linux Mint 15 Cinnamon box on the network (static) to monitor network activity, to many apps to list, but the ones that I use regularly are Umit, Ntop, and Iptraf.

This seems to be a common question on many forums but I have yet to find an adequate solution. In connecting my Seagate NAS 440 to my Server 2008 R2 and joining it to the domain, I am no longer able to access it through the browser by the IP address. If I run the NAS utility it finds no process on the other end of the pipe. If I attempt by NetBios Name it connects just find. The issue is I have some devices on my network (Scanners/Copiers) that don't communicate well with anything but the IP address. I have tried firmware upgrades, DNS Forward/Reverse Lookup, NS2 Authentication Level, reinstallations on both ends and nothing seems to work. Please help with any information.

Hi all, I've recently promoted a Windows Server 2008 DC to primary and assumed all the AD and DNS rolls to it. It's working well and DNS is working on it. I have also forwarded the service providers dns to it.
The setup is that it's the only server handing out internal dns to 4 separate locations with 3 locations on Comcast and one on Windstream T1.
If the location that the server is at goes offline I loose internet access at the other three locations (and always did even with the original server). Work station's are setup with dynamic ip/dns.
We use Linksys RV042 VPN's and my thought is to setup the second dns on them to be Comcasts and in the one location WindStreams. However when I add the entry on the VPN routers I break internal name resolution of the PC's on the network and users have to use IP addresses of our Terminal servers.
What I'd like to do is have the other locations still have internet access even if the internal DNS server is down. Is there a way to do this? The RV042's have dual wan so maybe I could use the Failover with different dns numbers and have it go to the same modem or any other ideas?

Thanks as always in advance for any ideas,

A:Do i have server R2 2008 or Win 7 sp1 ?

Control Panel>System and Security>System, look under the Windows edition heading.
Server 2008 R2 is designed to run things like file servers, print servers, domain controllers, Exchange servers, etc. Windows 7 is for desktops.

I know this is a Win & forum but I am thinking about setting up a Win Server 2008 R2 server to learn how to administer a server. As you might guess I really know nothing about how to even get started and am not an IT person, just someone that likes to tinker with computers.

Can someone recommend a path ie books, classes, online classes etc to get me started?

A:Server 2008 R2

Ok you might think Im nuts, but look into the "For Dummies" Books I own a few myself and they are great for giving you ideas and hints on setting things up and remembering things with the way they are worded.
Also since 2008r2 is still so new it might be hard to find info on it. I would look into Server 2003 first then you can grab a book on 2008 since 90% of server stuff is just updated from one to another with added items here and there. Also grabbing the older copy will be a bit cheaper on the wallet then you can go from there about spending the extra cash.

Hey guys,

I have a scenario assignment i have to do. One part is driving me crazy as what I'm doing is not working..

Basically I have two server 2008's running. One the domain controller, the other a file server. They are both connected to each other through the domain 'augusta.globalgoods.local'. I have created the users and global groups i need to in the active directory and placed them in the appropriate places.

I have to create a shared network drive hosted on both of the computers. In order to get the permissions right, I have to create the domain local groups. This is where I get confused. The possibilities of the domain local groups are:
-globalgoodsusers - Read
-globalgoodsmanagers- Read
-globalgoodsmanagers - Full control
-Administrators - Full control

I am currently logged on as administrator and cannot create anything in the folders. the structure i have is USER>GLOBAL GROUP>DOMAIN LOCAL GROUP. Is this right?

Can someone walk me through how to properly install shared network drive with the appropriate permissions for the right user accounts?

Thanks, and sorry for the long post!

anyone tried messing with server 2008 yet? was wondering if it would be worth switching my 2k3 server over to it, and what has changed? have heard some good and bad things about it(mostly good) but still not that convinced seeing as how my server works just fine for right now....

any thoughts?

I loaded server 2008 to play with for a couple of days... I WON'T use it for production. It's vista with active directory and I personally don't like it.

Is it possible to have these both on disk?
has anyone had any issues?

Which should I install first for that matter?

A:Win 7 and Server 2008 R2

Do you mean the same HDD or the same DVD (aka a backup disk)?

If it is the latter then I don't believe you can, but if it is the former then yes as long as you create a separate partition for etch OS (Partition or Volume - Create New)

I have a Server 2008 with Fax service installed and working. I cannot get either my Win 7 workstations nor my XP workstations to connect to the fax server. Both can connect to \\server\fax as a printer, but neither can actually function.

The Win 7 Fax & Scan says "You do not have security permissions to complete this operation" when I try to add the \\server as an account. XP says something similar.

Has anyone resolved this issue reliably?
